Bad battery or is roaming killing me?? - HTC EVO 3D

I have a slight problem. I don't know if i have a bad battery or if roaming really does kill your battery that much. I have always used sense ROMs. I've used like 4 different ROMs so far such as Ava and Synergy. I'm now on the senseless ROM. I have my SetCPU set to screen off max 192 min 192. But when ever I'm at work, my battery completely dies without me even using it. A normal 8 hour day, the only time I use the phone is for 10 minutes on break to check email and Facebook, then for 30 minutes at lunch to text my girlfriend. The rest if the time the phone is in my pocket. But since I'm in a building the phone us always in roaming. It's fully charged at 630am when I leave and is between 20%-14% by 330pm when i get out. Does roaming the while time really drain the battery like that? Or do I maybe have a bad battery? No Rom has made a difference, even the senseless Rom.

Roaming pwns the battery. I found that turning off mobile networks really helps when you are in these type of settings daily. Give it a shot.

+1 Roaming kills the battery big time. I've learned that with every phone I have it seems.. First it was the Hero, sitting at the track in the middle of no where.. I sat down and the phone felt like it was on fire..looked at it.. from 100% an hour ago to almost 30%..roaming kill it. Like the other post, turn off the mobile network while leaving the phone in your pocket if your not using it.

Do this, turn your phone on airplane mode when not using...then be prepared to smile. Roaming sucks the phone dry on battery power.

same here. however, i forward my sprint number to my sipgate number so it forwards to the phone while mobile networks are turned off as long as i have a wifi connection.

Thanks guys. My og EVO never had that problem which is what really confused me. I'll defiantly try turning off my mobile network and see how big of a difference it makes

So how's battery life?

Much better than the 4G? Someone...anyone?
a little too early to tell i would imagine.. i can let you know tomm
but kinda hard to compare it to my evo since i rooted the phone as soon as i could... spend a year with the phone rooted
so of course, the phone was better than a stock evo
i dont think this should be bad, as long as you turn your data off and all those other things you can do to save batt.
of course, at 1st everyone will be playing with the phone, so its hard to say but with normal use it should last as a phone like thing should.. smartphones have never been known for their batt
Ive had it on since I got it and its still alive
Battery life is a lot better than the stock Evos for sure. It is a lot better than the reviews you've been reading, or comments about it for that matter.
For know battery is great for me. But i can really tell you tomorrow if the phone still alive after work!
My bet is that they aren't regular Sprint users and don't see the "4G on" button as some sort of suicide switch like we do....they get sent a review phone to review.
Then they rag on Wimax for a while neglecting that it's in fact a relatively more robust protocol and it's the frequency involved that causes the horrible signal propagation characteristics Sprint/Clear's WiMax has become known for...
...and then they applaud Sprint for getting on board the LTE bandwagon, even though most (who understand) consider it the lesser protocol....even though Sprint's LTE will be high frequency and just as ****ty (or ****tier) as WiMax.
...WiMax with Verizon's LTE frequencies would be amazing...ahem....in theory, of course.

lol My EVO 4G was root it as well LMAO Good catch
Looks good so far. I have been using it heavily, youtube, spiderman , camera/video, etc... and I am only at halfway. I didn't charge it before I started using it so I am not sure where it was when it I started.
seems decent, was at home when I got off work. charged it to full been using heavy and still at 85% after 3 hours with Bluetooth,WiFi,gps off and hourly sync of fb twitter pulse and push gmail.

I've been texting, youtube 3d, watching green hornet, xda, with WiFi on and it just now took a notch away from my battery and I've been doing all this for +2 hours. Personally for my level of usage vs my old EVO I can already tell a major difference in the battery.

The jury is still out for me.
I took it off the charger at 6:00 (EST) this morning. Sent about 12 text messages, checked facebook, checked twitter (then closed app), did a few minutes of web browsing, listened to a downloaded podcast on my car radio via bluetooth (~45 minutes), wifi has been off, 4G off, bluetooth off after I got to work, and i'm at 70% right now.
EDIT: Forgot to add I use Push gmail and push active exchange from work set to "as mail comes in" on M-F 7a-7p then it switches to once every 30 minutes.
Did you guys calibrate the battery with the charge technique 8hours on 1 hour off and turn on two minutes then turn off and charge for another hour
Sent from my Evo3d using XDA Premium App
Is anyone's battery really bad? I woke up to the battery at 830am est at 80%. I took 2 3d pictures and use trillian for about 30mins. My 4g gps and wifi are off and tuned 3d off after taking the 2 pictures. I'm sitting at about 60% and it's only been about 2 hours. Not sure if it's just my phone and if i should exchange it.

Where do I check for this info. This is what my battery usage looks like right now:
4 hours on battery:
Display: 83%
Cell Standby: 5%
BeyondPod: 3%
Phone Idle: 3%
Android OS: 3%
Mediaserver: 2%
Bluetooth: 1%
EDIT: Just saw this:
Uptime: 11:57
Awake Time: 9:46
If I'm reading this right, the phone only slept for 2 hours last night? Is this normal?
Mine has been wonderful. Can't put it down... So my awake time is high. I think there is wake lock issue with facebook for HTC friend stream syncing. I don't use it now, but noticed it yesterday. Apps that were battery hogs on my 4G are not so bad on the 3D.. like word with friends.

I was getting insanely bad battery life, I lost about 50% within 30 minutes. This is what I did to fix it, I applied the OTA (still was getting bad battery life) then I did a factory reset on my device and let it charge all the way up to 100% over night. So far I've had it off the charger for almost 2 hours, haven't really been using it a lot but I've lost only 4% in 2 hours. I can really tell a HUGE improvement.
i let mine charge all the way plus some then took it off the charger and starting messing with it.
as my previous post...ive been texting and doing calls rather heavy while having wifi on and i took it off the charger around 530 600 am and its now 2 here and im at half or so.
the battery is doing well for me. also this thing charges so damn quick.

Battery life with low reception

I am amazed by the battery management of the phone. Where i work is practically a bunker, almost no signal at all. The phone keeps jumping from sprint to roaming all day. And i still manage to get out of work with 30% battery left. My epic was always on the charger.

Mine's been good at my office too (virtually no Sprint signal), I'm really happy with the battery life so far. I have missed some calls due to jumping between Sprint and Verizon, but I expected that to happen.
anything you guys did with settings or something, because that is NOT the case with me. In the back office where I work I get low signal and goes to roaming, phone barely lasts the time that im there.
Havent been at work the past two days and the battery life is great, went over 24 hrs without a charge with light usage. Dont really use it that much at work other than a few calls and txts and some very light web browsing in the areas I get data connection, not enough to kill the batter like it does I would think.

If you don't use Facebook or any of the other carrier bloatware, uninstall it via the settings > applications menu. I was surprised how much I could remove without having root, it's really nice to see.
I managed 50 hours off of a single battery change over the past two days, battery saver mode (set to 15% threshold) finally kicked in this morning, but I have great signal strength at home and work.
IMO the battery life is much better at stock on the 3D compared to the 4G, but it still isnt great. Im sure once we get custom kernels and ROMs that things will get better.

Do you leave your phone on 24/7?

I normally turn it completely off at night to charge it. Is this good practice or should it be left on while charging? I believe turning it off will extended the battery life do you believe this? Also I have noticed when I got to battery it says the phone has been on and off the charger for 2 days which it hasn't and I believe its doing this because I turn it off while charging is this correct?

I never turn my phone off unless I know it's going to be off for extended periods (more than 24 hours). I plug it in every night or when it gets low. This was for my OG Evo, mind you, but same difference.
That said, here's some reading on the subject.
That said, I've gone against that article by keeping my phone on charger all night just about every night, and by discharging it below 20% about half the time. Still, my Evo battery still lasts me all day with my personal usage, I have never noticed a decline in the two years I've been using it. I'm a light-to-moderate user, and it's worked for me.
I never power my phone off. It's on 24/7 other than rebooting for installing roms

I see no point at all to turn off any phone at night. God forbid there's a family emergency or something, I need to be reachable.

I believe if your fastboot is on, then you're not really shutting off your phone. Since it's always in the "ready to go" mode.
Btw, I keep mine on 24 hrs. I charge with when I need to (usually towards the evening of the day). But I restart whenever I flash a new rom.
mine is on 24/7
I use my Nexus S as my alarm clock so I leave it on. I left my EVO Shift on all night but didn't use that as an alarm. I never have had battery issues but don't really keep my phones long enough to know for sure. I really kind of think they were designed to be left on all the time.
I leave mine on 24/7. I do not have a land line and only have the cell phone, so my wife and I just leave ours on just incase there is an emergency people can get a hold of us. Which has happened several times.....people with DUI's, getting picked up by the fuzz. Can't get a ride from the bar, births.........

That might explain why some of us have been unboxing phones with zero battery charge. Mine had to be charged to even power on when I bought it and tried to activate it. If they're packaged in "sleep" mode at the factory, they'll run down over time. Or am I wrong? Is it more of a battery-less "hibernate" mode?
I usually leave mine on 24/7, letting it charge overnight. I keep it charged at work too so don't really need any extra batteries or such. If I need it to last awhile I just turn off data or turn it off completely.
Granted, every couples weeks I do usually re-boot just to clear everything.
On all the time. Check out audio guru in the play store, has a volume schedule for all the different sounds, ringtones, sms notification, alerts, phone volume, media etc.

[TIP] Better battery life

One thing I found to save power that I don't really see posted anywhere is by using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=AutomateItPro.mainPackage&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEwMiwiQXV0b21hdGVJdFByby5tYWluUGFja2FnZSJd
I have it programed to turn off 3G/mobile data when it screen's off....unless I have a certain app running like say the browser. It will then keep data connected until the browser is closed, then the screen turned off. I then have it turn 3G/mobile data on as soon as I screen on again, so it's ready to rock instantly. I personally noticed a huge difference in my battery drain when not using the phone.
The app is pretty cool, you can program a ton of things. I have gps auto turn on when I use G-Maps or GasBuddy, then it auto turns off when I close those apps. Saves time and juice imo. Just figured I'd throw this out there.
nice app. isn't there a setting within the OS to do this, though? pretty sure there is.
either way, agreed. data usage can/will cause battery drain.
the real perp is your display, however. adjust your brightness settings, you will see significant battery improvements.
My display is set low, and all my other settings are set to be battery friendly. It's been awhile since I used the app. But after I had that setup, I noticed better life instantly. Went fishing today with the little guy, left the house with 100%. No phone usage for 2hrs, and it was still at 99%.
Can't you do this without the app tho
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
If there's a way to set the phone to turn the radio off when screen is off, I'm unaware of that. I tried turning it on and off manually, but it got to be a pain turning it on and off all the time. I would end up just leaving it on. Now I don't even have to think about it, and it gets done everytime.
Sounds similar to Tasker, which is a little confusing to new users.
But as for your post, turning 3g off saves a TON of battery. I have to keep it on during the day to get emails for my job, but at night, I turn 3g off, and the phone will drop maybe 2% overnight with 3g off.
The CDMA version of the 3D has a setting in network that allows you to turn off your mobile network if the screen is off for 5+ minutes. The setting is "turn off always on mobile network". But the screens needs to be off 5 minutes before it will. This setting will not turn off wifi though.

Pix or it didn't happen. I have full bars with 4G and my battery drains a lot faster.

If you wanted to save battery life without downloading anything you could just use the HTC widgets for mobile network, 4g, WiFi, and GPS. This method allows me to switch the settings on and off on the fly. I've also found that if you disable all GPS options it won't be running in the background and for apps that require it. And if I'm in one spot for a while I just use WiFi.

4G Toggle for VZW SGS3?

searched Google, Google Play and XDA. cant find a toggle widget or even a manual method to switch to 3g that works. anyone got any ideas?
the LTE is stupid fast in my area, highest i got so far is 47.7Mbps down and 14.5Mbps up buuuut.... its murdering my battery even at idle.
when i jump on WiFi battery life seems awesome. thinking 3g will be some ware in the middle?
thanks

I'm curious as well!
I would love to be able to toggle my LTE on and off.
I really hope someone figures this out soon.
Don't see anything out there yet...the Thunderbolt app doesn't work, either. I guess patience is our only option at this point.
Would be very interested in this as well. I used 3g on my thunderbolt 99% of the time to let it last all day, this is a necessary option to have.
yea. dont get me wrong. im really loving how fast the 4G network is. its literally the fastest network ive ever been on hands down.
but... i dont really need that much speed 90% of the time. for general stuff like email and random background data services its just not worth the hit on battery life. even at idle, when im away from Wifi i watch my battery % go down the tubes...

Thanks for link. Tried that method out, seems like all i get is 1X and never see 3G... Not sure if coverage would play a role in that cuz I have 2 bars at the moment where I work.
try toggling airplane mode to get in to 3G.
so far so good. 4G must have been why my battery was draining so fast. been 30min off the charger @ idle on 3G and still i have 100% battery left. on 4G it would already be down to about 96%.
if someone makes a toggle app that works for the VZW SGS3 i would gladly pay a few bucks for it. :good:

Tried that and it worked after couple minutes but it keeps going in and out of 3G and sometimes goes into only 1X
must have something to do with the service in your area maybe?
mine seems to work pretty easily. going back into 4G is almost instant. but when i switch into 3G it does take about 30sec or so. sometimes i see it flash the 1X icon but its very quick and only seems to be doing it when i switch it, after that it just stays in 3G.
1hr 20min off the charger and down to 99% this is a HUGE difference from what ive been seeing on 4G. :victory:
maybe. The area is kinda crappy here where I work. Even on my Nexus i was getting 3G but it would go out. We'll see what happens when I leave
