Serious battery drain - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here's the thing. I'm current running stock froyo, KB5. It's rooted. Using Overstock Kernal (over clocked to 1200 when running, 400 when off, and 1000 when charging). Has build prob edits. Using TWZ 4.5.
I want to use my phone for data. A lot (i get bore at work and i don't have the interntz).
Here's the thing. Without data running i get excellent battery life. With wifi enabled i get awesome battery life. However, with 3g enabled, my phone is useless. I basically get 4 hours of continuous use and then im dead.
Any ideas what could be causing battery drain.

Sounds perfectly normal. It takes a lot of battery taking in data...imagine how the Galaxy S 4g battery life is? I can hardly get through a school day with my data on. So I turn it off everytime. Also try recalibrating your battery.

Might be your build.prop settings or your modem, or maybe you dont get good signal at work?
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.

Thats the way it is with cellular data. Get a bigger battery pack or plug it in. Trying to communicate with a base station, that who knows how many miles away, is not the same as the wifi router next room.

Try different rom and modem an see which one gives you best results an try using Edge an wifi

Give the Bali kernel a try and check your build.prop edits. If they're the data signal ones from Master&Slave's thread, I remember an issue where they could drain battery.

Could you tell me which lines cause the draining problem? I just added those tweaks to my build.prop.

i was having really bad battery drain on CM7...i tot of flashing kernels to improve batt life and what not
until i recalibrate my batt....it goes 7hours and still left with 25% of batt... before it was 4 hours max from my batt life...

Battery issues

I currently have my eris rooted, flashed to kaosfroyo v35-1, which I hear has crappy battery life anyway and i hope v36 is on the horizon, and using setcpu. Not doing any crazy overclocking. And no change in drain or saving since installing it. I tried re calibrating my battery a few times including battery stats wipe.
I still seem to not be able to get the battery drain to slow down other than turning off the 3g when not using it. Is there a 3g managing app? I haven't been able to find one. And any other suggestions im definantly open to. (The collins battery tweak wasn't working out as far as getting it set up and running.) Also when I reboot the phone the battery gains about 10%.

Do you have the 50% time without signal bug? Go to Settings->About phone->Battery Usage and check under Cell Standby.
Nope. And its been 5 hours since unplugged. 3% time without signal.

[Q] Issues with SC 2.9.2 and battery drain?

Hi,
I just flashed SuperClean 2.9.2 (non-voodoo) yesterday, and I love the speed, but it really drains the battery pretty fast. For example, with minimal usage it drains from 100 to 82 in less than two hours. That's a lot worse than the stock settings I had on there before. Since I'm new at this, is that normal? If I switch to a better kernel would that fix it? Any suggestions on what to do or tweak?
Thanks!
[Update] 3/30/11
So after a full day of observation, I've noticed that it seems to go from 100 to 80 fairly quickly (less than 2 hours), but then the rate slows down. It took 4 hours to go from 80 to 62. Then last night I left it on all night, starting at 78 and it is now at 48 (almost 12 hours). Obviously I wasn't using it much overnight, but I wasn't using it much when the initial drain from 100 to 80 happened. Might just be that the meter is not consistent? But at least I know that it's not draining faster than the old setup.
Still looking into the idea of an undervolted kernel. Any good suggestions?
Thanks!
An undervolted kernel might help but who knows... if I get over 5 hours I usually consider myself lucky.
i updated this morning, have an extended battery, and seem to notice massive drains, but i guess with power comes sacrifices

Not sure why this double posted. Must have been my frustration waiting 5 minutes just to edit an already posted post to correct the name of the app....
Each phone reacts differently to ROMs / Kernels when it comes to battery life. Same setup shows different battery life for different people.
First I would use the "Spare Parts" app and see if you can find any app taking up a lot of your battery life and remove it. (included in SC ROMs)
People also report different battery life with different Kernels. You can flash different Kernels that work with your ROM to see if you can get better battery life.
You also may need to remap your battery. There are posts on how to do so. Basically you charge to 100%, shut down and wait for it to show 100% with power off, then boot, go into Terminal gain SU and type bstats. Phone will reboot. This should be done anytime you flash a new Kernel and some do it with ROM flashes too.
Also don't run screen at 100% bright, use auto or something at or less than 30% unless you are in sunlight.
When not in use turn off WiFi and GPS as well.
All I can think of right now

I know some of the kernels are designed to recognize an aftermarket battery (see link below)

Running not even 2 hrs yet and mines at 70% right now from a full charge, so I feel your guys(gals)' pain. I checked with Spare Parts and noticed that under "Network Usage" there is a "0" that seems to be using up a LOT of juice. Searching it up on google brought me to a possible issue with GSM/CDMA (Time w/o signal issue). I remember issues with this with the D1 and the Eris, usually you could fix it on those phones by turning on Airplane Mode for a little while, then turning it back off.
EC10 is based off a GSM SGS phone if I'm not mistaken, and because of that may make the phone try to find a GSM signal. My time without signal was around 45% this morning so I dug around threads with similar issues with other phones brought me to this Hero CDMA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651848 .
Now we do have the same menu as shown here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sung_Galaxy_S_Series&oldid=13336#Secret_Codes
My thing is that I can't access it using SC 2.9.2. It doesn't automatically go to any of the menus. Anyone else have an issue getting into any of the secret menus?
It also looks like turning the airplane mode on and off seems to work for now.

Trigger 3.3 beta

I just installed the new Rom TRIGGER 3.3-beta. This rom is very fast and the GPS is great. I also put on bali 1.8.4. But the battery drains fast. If you guys tried it out, and found a way to save battery can you please let tell us what you did to control it. I know its in beta version and is being tweaked on.
Thank you
Yea Im using the same Rom. Hate to break it to you but the battery life on most all android devices sucks. I have had 5 different android devices and the battery sucked on all of them. didn't matter if it was stock or custom Rom. ether way these devices just have ****ty battery life. You can make it a little better by turning down brightness and messing with other settings but when it comes down to it. it still sucks! Just my 2 cents!

Did you recondition your battery after flashing? I've had pretty good battery performance with the Bali kernels. I also tend to use the KB1 modem. It seems to give me the best battery. But each phone is a bit individualistic, and what works well for someone may not work as well for next person.

This is untrue as I have owned an android device since the G1. The battery did suck on the G1, but by no means does the battery suck on every android device. My guess is you probably never calibrated your battery or you just used it very heavily. There's also the possibility that every rom you tried sucked on those devices. I have consistently gotten a full day or more with Bionix NextGen V2 with the Bali kernel with moderate to heavy usage. It is true if you lower the brightness, turn off wifi, bluetooth and gps when you aren't using it that it will increase your battery life though.
I have reconfigured the battery and have the brightness turned all the way down. Dont use WiFi but battery still sucks compared to other smart phones.

can any of you post a screenie of this rom pls
Battery usage is hard to compare since there are so many variables. In my experience I generally have better battery life when visiting my parents. The area I live in is somewhat of a black hole for signal and I notice more battery drain here with the same rom/kernal setup and similar usage pattern. I believe the weak signal here causes a higher battery drain over all.
Of course this might not apply to your situation but it could be worth considering.

I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just going to state what the facts are.
THE BATTERY DOES NOT SUCK, MOST LIKELY IS USER ERROR
Lol. It isn't user error. I think you might just use your phone more heavily than others. One thing you have to realize when comparing the battery life of the phones are a) battery size, b) screen size, c) smartphone or stone age phone, d)**** you've done to the phone including ROM's/Kernals/Apps/Sync.
Personally, on days that I am working, I get about 8-10 hours out of my battery before it dies. When I am not at work I get about 23 hours out of my battery.
what is the major difference between trigger 3.2 and trigger 3.3?
Try using overstock instead, I've had pretty good battery life with it.
Im running trigger3.3 beta with overstock and the battery is great.

bahaha you must be kidding. like someone else said, it depends on soooo many variables and phones. I was running trigger rom and overstock kernel and was going down about 1-2% battery every hour while screen was off. I listen to pandora every morning for an hour to hour and half and would go down 5%. I've sat on the web watching tv on TV shows stream app for about 1-2 hours and went down like 15-20% when brightness is lowered.
It's all about the brightness, killing apps that enjoy sucking battery life and enjoy run constantly, and running an OC/UV kernel. You can also change it from the usual 3g/H connection down to E (edge) which uses alot less power also. Turn off or turn down auto sync on certain apps like facebook from every 10 minutes down to every few hours.
The screen is the biggest power consumer, so lower that, set it to automatic or all the way down to lowest brightness to save quite a bit of battery when using the phone.
Usually the second largest power consumer (if ur not a huge user of just one certain app) is when the screen is off and the phone is syncing and just running android. the solution is If you can find a decent UV kernel (overstock for android 2.2 was what I was using when on 2.2), you can slow your CPU down. Like on my vibrant I made a profile (on the SetCPU app) to undervolt it from 1,000mhz down to a conservative 400mhz max and 100mhz minimum when screen is off. This is very easy to do. sometimes I'd watch shows on that. I usually left it at a conservative setting and 800mhz and 100mhz min all day long when screen was on, sometimes at 400mhz if i wasnt doing much. It worked wonderfully for me.
Moral of the story, there are plenty of things to make your phones battery last longer than it normally would. The big one probably to get a well known kernel that can UV, then get SetCPU and make a few profiles to make your phone use less power.
BOOM!

[Q] Baseband, Build and Battery Life

I hate to start a new battery thread but I've searched, read all the ones out there, and nothing seems to have helped. I just got this phone late last week and I first upgraded it to the latest OTA, then odin cww and finally installed com rom 1.3. Let me just say I've never seen a battery drop this quick. I haven't even activated the phone on my account because I'm so scared of how quickly I see it dropping without touching a thing on the phone. I also noticed the following:
baseband version
S:i500.04 V.ED03
Kernel Version
2.6.32.9
Build Number SCH-I500.ED01
The baseband and build ED0? don't seem to match up. Would this cause the problem? How do I fix that?
Just so that you get an idea, I've had the phone disconnected for 5hr 30min and I'm down to 55% battery with a fresh clean install of com rom 1.3. I did the battery calibration and that's about the only thing I've even installed on the phone. When I hit batt use here's what I get.
Display: 52%
WiFi 26%
cell standby 15%
Phone Idle 7%
I've had android for about a year and have an incredible that I love so I know that something just isn't right with this fascinate. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
my understanding is that the build and baseband don;t have to be equal, baseband is modem/radio and build is just the rom i believe.
From what I hear, the only thing you have to keep track of is using an eclair modem with a froyo rom as there will be issues...
You can try going to the ED01 modem (works better for me vs ed03)
I also had battery "problems".. barely get through 12 hours without needed charge with little use.
I just installed Green power app from market.. it seems to work similarly to juice defender, just is easier to configure for the noob like me, and is MUCH more limited. works on the basis of only turning on transmission intermittently.
Now I can go 18+ hours and remain above 50%.. 80% if I don't touch my phone.
Turn off wifi when you're not connected, my phone lasts 36 hours using juice defender to turn off radios when screen is off
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The radio firmware makes or breaks the battery life on this phone. I've tried every combo of roms and radio firmwares. Go back to the DL09 or EA28 (my preference) radio firmware and recalibrate your battery bro. The eclair-era radio firmwares have proven to be much better than the newer ones.

Com Rom is built off of ED01 so it will say that.
ED03 is the latest build basically the same as ED01 just 3 fixed some bug that had a few phones stuck on EA28 if I remember correctly.
I haven't noticed much battery difference between the different modem/radios, personally it seems like the kernels make a bigger difference to me.
Also if you just clear the battery stars to calibrate the battery the battery gauge will be messed up for a couple cycles, best if you run it all the way down too. One of tie batteries I was calibrating in my phone said 0% for almost an hour before it actually turned off.
These phones aren't great on battery life anyways. One of the good things about using a kernel like OTB included in com rom is it allows you to use aftermarket batteries and still charge then in the phone. I get the Samsung batteries (I think they are technically for the epic), out of China for $2 each. Have 5 of them right now the wife and I rotate through. We also have two external chargers, we both just carry a spare battery to use if our phones die during the day.
Thanks for the tips. I think I'm going to try the different radio files and see if that helps. I guess I was just wondering why my display shows as if it's using so much battery and if that was caused by some other conflict. I've had phones with bad battery life but this is just crazy. From the time I wrote the first post (a little less than 2 hrs ago) I've gone from 56% to 36% with nothing installed or running. That's just beyond bad battery life. Something is hosed. I'll try the radios and cross my fingers.
Have you tried under the task manager and choose the ram manager do the level 2 clear, should close everything that is running, that helps me quite a bit. Also auto rotate can be turned off when you aren't using it that will help battery life too.

As was stated earlier, turn off wifi when you are not using it, that will help a lot. Also under wifi settings, advanced, and change the wifi sleep policy to when screen is turned off. And when you look at those percentages under battery use are not a percentage of the total battery, just a percentage of whatever battery use there is. So if you are losing 8% of your battery per hour, that 52% next to display just means display is draining 52% of that 8% per hour drain. Display is almost always going to be the top drain because of the super amoled screen.
^^^ Yeah, display is most of it. Turn brightness down (as opposed to automatic or full brightness) and see how that helps. If that doesn't help, turn off mobile data until needed, if that doesn't help (should do this anyway) recalibrate your battery and cycle it like 2 times. Give it a couple days, it will go back to normal.
Radios are the biggest battery drain, not the screen, I've used airplane mode and watched movies with four hours of screen on time and used 20% battery, all you need to do is keep wifi off when not in use, it pings something like every 20s trying to find when you're in range of networks, 3g is your second biggest killer...also do not use auto task killers, for reasons I'm too lazy to get into...lowest screen brightness setting helps some but I've found it a pain going into bright sun and having to change it, the auto dimmer works rather well

Click on the items in battery stats and tell us how long your display has actually been on. The display on this phone can fairly easily burn through 1%/minute of being on (in fact, doing the math, my phone's display is at just under 1%/minute right now).
And, personally, I hate JuiceDefender and those apps. They're not fixing the source of the problem, just doing a half assed job of duct taping over what might be tangentally related (while doing horrible things to syncing). Try to find what is _actually_ trying to keep the network awake if that is actually what is going on (the Facebook widget is known to utterly destroy battery life). Make sure apps are using Push instead of Pull notifications where ever possible (Pull uses an astronomically large amount of battery life in comparison to Push).
I get around 15 hours on any other radio than dl09, on which I get around 24-36 hours depending on how much I'm using to phone. Also make sure you turn off wifi when you aren't using it.

Ok, thanks to everyone. I wanted to give you all a quick update in the hopes that this will help someone in the future. I replaced the radio file with EA28 and wow what a difference it made. I now don't see the percentages drop right before my eye and I have a shot of making it through the day. I'm also pretty surprised by the amount of battery the screen uses up. My AMOLED droid incredible usually shows the display as using the least percentage of battery. I guess the super really isn't that super.
One question I do have is if I go back down to DL09 to get the better battery life, what's the trade off?
I haven't noticed any differences between the DL09 radio and any Froyo radio.

[Q] Total Battery Life For You with GPS Active 100% of the Time???

I'd like to know from the folks at XDA how much battery life (in hours) they get once they recharge the battery and turn on GPS (i.e. 100% active with a software--no screen off) until the phone shuts down from no energy.
I'd like to know what ROMS, kernels, etc you're using and how much battery life with 100% GPS with no down time.
For me, I'm getting about ~3 hours with TW 1.3.2 and Bali using Copilot GPS software. Screen at half bright. Battery is reconditioned.........Is this any good?.....

3 hours with GPS enabled constantly? And your screen on the entire time? Yes, that's very good.
I remember I used to have a Garmin that would last ~24minutes after I took it off of the charger.
Constant-running GPS is a massive battery drain. Having your screen running for 3 hours straight is an even bigger battery drain.
Get a car charger.

Do you use glitch v11 HL too? If not then wat do u use? And if u do what are ur exact settings using voltage control? I've been going through forums like crazy trying to figure out how to extend my dam battery life specially seeing how everyone talks about 14 hours of use lol Thanks for the help

what worked really well for me is bali 1.1.1 here are my UV settings ive been running my phone all day at 6pm i had 50% and after a good amount of use i have 47% left im not overclocking at all
1000- -25
800- 50
400 -50
200 -50
100-75
when i try going around 100 and up it gets unstable so try these out and tweak em a bit im sure u will have better battery life
Do you use bali 1.1.1 with cm7 nightly too? just making sure it'll b compatible with my setup to . btw funny ur from newark. im from elizabeth =P

Battery is reconditioned.........Is this any good?.....

he's asking about it actually being on and running. Ie while being used for CoPilot turn-by-turn navigation with the screen on.
not just "enabled" and waiting in the background waiting.
