Hello,
I have a random/erratic problem with my SGSII reporting that the baseband is unknown and no IMEI being present.
It happens randomly through the night, or if the phone reboots itself, the signal icon changes to a circle with a line through it, and no network connectivity works (except for WiFi).
I've backed my \EFS up previously and restored that with no luck, re flashed my modem with no luck.
Usually the fix is to reboot the phone a few more times and eventually it comes back on.
I've got an app called 'network' which gives me various stats on the connectivity type etc (from my nexus one days) under 'Set preferred network type: I have an extra entry called 'Unknown' which gets selected by the phone, and changing this to one of the GSM variants doesn't have any effect.
Like I said, it's random and not much of a show stopper right now since I'm thinking it's a software problem. I don't want to RMA my handset just yet.
I have seen some other threads where people seem to have this permanently and there are no resolutions provided in the threads.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Kind Regards,
Chris.
I m relieved to know someone else also has this problem. Last Sunday my handset just hanged on lockscreen, so I pulled out battery, reinserted it and sim stopped detecting, so I tried couple of restarts, factory resets still nothing. So flashed firmware a couple of times still nothing. So when I checked if firmware was flashed correctly, the baseband was showing unknown and IMEI was completely blank. Handset is still in warranty so I don't want to take any chances, I am sending it in on Monday. Will keep you posted on what happens. Let me know if ur problem is solved.
Phone started regularly reporting that the SIM wasn't inserted so a quick phone call to O2 and a courier is coming to pick the handset up tomorrow.
Still under warranty so they should be able to fix/replace it.
Pain in the backside though to back up everything and then reinstalling it again when it comes back (either repaired, or a new/replacement one)
Right,
I got it back.
Apparently they identified it as a faulty SIM card slot. I was sceptical of this at first, but I persevered with it.
Surely enough, 1 day into using it, the same happened.
Back to the repair centre with photographic evidence of the problem.
Same happened to me a few night ago, removing the sim and re-inserting it fixed the problem for me.
I haven't seen it again yet.
I was on the stock firmware and insecure kernel.
me too... never been update or using any clockmod firmware..it just suddenly happen... any other way to fix this...
I'm also having the same problem for days now. My phone is full stock, never rooted it, never installed and unsecure kernel.
It randomly loses IMEI, Baseband and GSM signal. Sometimes it comes back after rebooting phone, but sometimes it seems to be permanent.

Dear all,
I have a Legend with S-ON (1.01), and I used fake-flash to change ROMs. The mobile phone has been fine with a custom ROM for more than 3 months now.
Suddenly, 3 days ago, the phone rebooted while browsing settings and when it came back on, the device could not recognize the SIM card or connect to the network and get a signal.
The problem is weird because the device (a) can find networks if I search for them, (b) can make emergency calls, (c) connects normally to both wi-fi and the SIM 3G internet but does not:
- get signal (always zero lines)
- recognize the sim card (always asks me to rescan for new contacts, and the process fails)
I tried wiping everything, I tried reflashing, I tried flashing another ROM. The problem persists.
Would flashing a new RADIO potentially help? It is the only thing I have not tried.
I am really at a loss here. The device did not fall down, or had a knock or any other user damage. The problem started suddenly and i can'f find a way out of it.
Anyone who manages to find me a solution gets a paypal beer
PS: Something important is that the phone DOES know that SIM card is there, and DOES partially recognize it: I am asked to put my SIM card PIN, which is accepted correctly.
Hey
What I'd do:
1.)Try the SIM in another device - could be a SIM problem...
2.) As you are 1.01, there is no risk in Warranty repair, so unroot and send back to shop if the sim proves OK in another device..
Probably a stupid suggestion but i had at one point no service when my battery cover was not on...
When i was rooting mine, i kept the battery cover off because i was stuck so many times in the middle of running step 1... so never bothered putting the battery cover on...
after i succeeded in rooting, i still saw no service... but as soon as i put the battery cover on , i was able to pick up the network
@QkSi1ver: The Legend's antenna is located in the battery cover, which is why you would have had no reception with it removed.

Which could be the reason for the SIM problems : if it is not set correctly it can't communicate proper with the mobile , that's why it asks for searching for contacts ( I had a similar problem a few months ago )
no network signal!

i don´t believe it! first of all, thank u kindly for ending my nightmarish odyssey through expert forums across the globe!
that just did the trick, uber cool! and yet it sucks, because i wasted most of my sunday and half of today to solve this, wondering why nobody even mentioned connection probs.
maan, i´m tired, i´m going to bed!
My girlfriend has had a Samsung S3 (I9300) for a couple of months and has had no issues with it however she dropped it and broke the LCD . I ordered a replacement screen (Front glass, LCD, and digitizer) from eBay and fitted this without any problems. I tested all functions on the phone and it seemed to be working okay. The same evening my girlfriend went and run the update and went from 4.0.4 (I think) to 4.1.2 since then she has complained about signal issues which I have now witnessed myself. I wished she had waited a bit longer to make sure the phone was working fine before doing any updates as now I am not sure if this is a software related problem or hardware. There is no way to revert back to the older version to confirm software. I know one option on the software side would be to root it and install a customer rom but I have never done this before and even though reading through the forums the process seems to be easy I am a bit reluctant to do this just now.
The signal indicator sometimes shows a circle with a line through it, sometimes it shows a grey triangle with no bars in it and other times it will show a bar or two and even a full signal. I have noticed even without a sim in it that it can show a couple of bars of signal. I have not got this confused with the Wi-Fi signal. When trying to send text messages or make a phone call the following errors come up “Not registered on network” and “No signal found for mobile network”
Below is what I have done/checked so far
I have restored the phone to factory settings but as explained before this will only restore to 4.1.2. This time the only apps on the phone are stock apps, no additional apps have been installed just encase a third party software may have caused issues.
Her sim will work in any other phone. I have an S2 and have ported my number over from a normal sim to a brand new micro sim to try in her phone. Both of these phones are on O2.
I have made sure the IMEI number is correct and matches what the phone came shipped with.
I have double checked the APN details and these match what my S2 has. Although I am pretty sure this is only for internet and MMS and would not affect SMS and phone calls.
After check over the settings and restoring to factory settings I have fitted a replacement antenna which I also got from eBay. I doubt I have damaged the mainboard as all other functions on the phone work fine. (Touchscreen, Cameras, Sound, Wi-Fi)
For some reason I can get the phone to work at my house on both GSM (2G) and WXCDA (3G) although it seems to be more stable when it is on GSM. As soon as I leave my house and go into town (approx. 2 mile away) or over to my girlfriends (approx. 20 miles away) it will stop working. I have gone onto the O2 website and entered both of our post codes on the O2 network coverage checker and this reports that there are no services down in our area and that we should have a good signal.
I have come on this forum for some advice and hopefully someone can recommend what I could do next. I have had a little browse on the forum already but is there something I have missed? Should I root the phone and install a customer rom? If it was caused by the official update is there an a hotfix of some sort coming soon? Or is this a genuine fault with the phone? If it is a fault with the phone and it has not be caused by me I could try sending it back to O2 (where the phone was purchased from) or Samsung seeing as I can’t see any warranty seals so think I would get away with this.
Thanks in advance for any responses I get to this and I am sorry if I have rambled on and provided info that is not essential.
Flash O2 stock rom via Odin .
If that does not fix it its a hardware repair job and you will be refused warranty as you have self repaired .

Hello all,
To put my issue simply, I am receiving the "Not registered on network" error on my phone. I have tried many things to resolve it and to help narrow down the possible problems, I will explain my situation and what steps I have taken to try to resolve it. I appreciate you taking the time to read my detailed explanation in advance, as I wish to be as clear and informative as possible.
My phone is an unlocked Australian Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300). I bought it about 6 months ago and about two months ago had some issues with the display come out of the blue. I was able to get this issue resolved through my warranty. When I received the phone back though, I thought it was all working fine but then I noticed I couldn't send SMSs or make calls as my phone wouldn't connect to my phone network (Vodafone). I tried reboots, hard reboots, restoring backups, using a different SIM card (from a different carrier) and I still couldn't get it to work.
During this process of trying to fix it myself, I rooted the phone. So when I realised I couldn't fix it and it could possibly be a hardware issue, I sent it back to be fixed under warranty. Unfortunately my warranty was voided when I rooted the phone, even though it was broken before I rooted it.
So a few days ago I received my phone back again and spent about 6 hours trying to fix it. Here's what I tried...
I tried to flash the latest Australian firmware (XSA) which is the same as the one I initially had when I purchased the phone. I tried factory resets, different firmware flashes, custom ROMs, different modems etc. None of this worked. I thought I had found my solution when I stumbled across ARIZA's patch, but event this did not solve my problem.
The really strange thing is I can occasionally connect to the network and if I try repeatedly, I can sometimes get an SMS to send. I've checked my SIM is clean (I've tried another SIM anyway) and everything seems fine.
My IMEI number is still intact and isn't blacklisted. I've tried restoring backups from when it was working (before I got it "fixed" the first time) and that's not worked. The current status of my phone is:
ROM: Omega v5.0
Version: 4.2.2
Baseband: I9300XELLA
Network: vodafone AU (sometimes shows as Unknown)
Mobile Network State showing as "Disconnected", except in rare moments
IMEI and Serial intact
I've tried all I can think of and all the suggestions I can find on the Internet. I'm hoping someone here will have some suggestions for things I can try. I'd really like to fix this issue as I've been without my phone for months. I'm thinking it could be a hardware issue, but want to make sure I've exhausted all options I can try myself first before trying to get a place to repair it. As my warranty is void, I'm not sure how easy this will be.
Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions,
Jay.

Return to a stock rom and use triangle away to reset the counter, retry with your provider, they may let it slide that you've previously tried.
It would appear that you've already tried everything.
Return to stock and update via OTA, remove root, remember to use triangle away, I personally haven't had to do it but i would imagine that it needs root privileges to complete so thinking about it i would say to use triangle away first.
Hope you get it sorted.

Hey,
Thanks for the quick response.
I doubt they would let it slide as I had a pretty long back and forth with them trying to get them to fix the phone or at least send it back to me without charging me for the shipping costs and that didn't end in my favour. I'm sure they'd remember that they already rejected it due to it being modified and would just blame the rooting for the issues.
I'm thinking I might just reset it all to stock, reset the counter and at least ask. If not, I'll try to find a repair shop who will take a look. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still open to any other ideas people might have which I can try from my end.
Thanks,
Jay.
Starting point would be correct firmware modem and CSC for your location and network .
Flash your original rom .

Hey,
Thanks for the suggestion. I believe I have tried this by downloading the latest firmware from SamMobile and flashing that through Odin, but I haven't tried it through Keis, so I guess I'll give that a go.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks,
Jay.
Me too. I've an i9305 (S3 LTE) and i've tried every tutorials on internet and so far nothing: always the same issue "not registered on network". In case you solve the issue please let me know. I'll do the same. Txs
I've tried to connect my phone using Keis and it just seems to say "Connecting..." forever. I've tried running the connection troubleshooter and that just seemed to re-install the drivers but not actually fix the issue. I still can't get Keis to even connect to my phone.
Any ideas on why this would be? Or other suggestions I can try for my initial problem?
Thanks,
Jay.
As an update to this, it seems I've tried everything I can on my end to fix it to no avail. I believe it must be a hardware issue and have dropped it into a phone repair centre. I'm hoping they will be able to find the problem and fix it.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Another update to this, I received a response from the repair centre. They said:
"...we took it all apart and checked all connections and serviced it.
Once we put it back together we tested it with Vodafone and Optus sim cards. Both sims had service and were able to connect to the internet as well."
After I asked for more details on what they did to try and help me determine what the problem was, they said:
"The phone looked 100% fine inside, no signs of water or any other damage. Sometimes electronic devices can be a bit temperamental, maybe the fact that we undone and cleaned all connections it's booted it back to life."
So I'm going to pick it up tomorrow, but it sounds like it's all sorted now. So not it's not 100% clear what the issue was, but to anyone having this same problem who has tried everything like I did, it is likely a hardware issue. Your best bet is probably to try a repair shop (assuming your warranty won't cover the problem).
Thanks to those who offered suggestions and good luck to those with the same problem.
Do please tell us if it worked because i'm tempted to do the same as you did before selling it on ebay as faulty for parts. PLEASE ANSWER US BACK AFTER TESTING IT an entire day. THANK YOU A LOT!
Does it work properly now? Thanks - Please reply.
Not sure if it is exactly the same problem but I remember getting that msg when i was on Telstra and I'd installed a new ROM - I went to the Telstra site and got them to send an activation msg that reset my provider info. It didn't seem to matter for phone calls but I wasn't getting any connection to do with data until I 'ran' the msg they sent.
Hi I had this issue with my gs2..what I did was flash the right modem and restore efs thats how I solved my problem..hope this helps..

Txs for help but I don't have the backups of my efs folder... so I think it is useless therefore i am going to sell it on ebay as faulty for parts. Unfortunately! I love my i9305!
You should probably do some more searching on site - there are a number of things to do, including getting a service centre to fix it. Be cheaper than a new phone. Is it an i9300 or ann i9305?

It's a i9305 and I've tried everything, every tutorials on internet without success so far. I am tired of the situation and also very disappointed therefore I think i will sell it as faulty. As it regards to a repair center, near my area it's very difficult to find someone who can fix it.
For me it seems my connection is still intermittent when using my Vodafone SIM on my S3 (and the same for another Vodafone SIM I tried on this phone) whereas both SIMs work fine on other phones.
I then tried a Telstra SIM on my S3 and it worked fine. So it seems I have a weird problem with my phone where the combination of the S3 and Vodafone doesn't work, but other phones or other SIMs do work.
I think I'm just going to try changing carrier (I've been meaning to anyway) since it seems their SIMs work in my phone.
Really not sure what is causing this issue, but I'm at the point where I just want it fixed and I don't really care how. Hope you find out how to solve your issue.
How is your phone right now? Im also having the same problem. It always say 'not registered to network' everytime i make a call. This happens whenever i turn on the flight mode, then turning it off.. i have a strong signal and i can use the internet provided by my network but i cant make a call or text.. people cant also reach my number. I sent this already to samsung service ctr and they changed the board but its still there whenever i access the flight mode..

Hi...the same, no solution so far. I am actually selling it on ebay for parts. I simply gave up.
Was just casually using my Amaze today with the official CM10 I've always had on it, and all of a sudden in the middle of a call the call dropped and the phone restarted. I thought it was just a random reboot as they are nightly builds. After it restarted there all of a sudden was no signal. I was a bit confused as just a minute ago before I started the call I was getting full bars on 4G. I tried rebooting multiple times, changing SIM's (the phone is unlocked), even trying different ROMs. All of them had the same problem. No cellular signal. I tried the *#*#4636#*#* to set the network to WCDMA, however it was always stuck on "unknown". No matter what I changed it too it would always reset back to unknown. Then I finally thought I had to resort to an RUU.
After reflashing the Mobilicity RUU (stock one that came with the phone) on gingerbread, the signal FINALLY worked! I was so relieved and went to download the ICS OTA update so I can start flashing ROM's again. Then all of a sudden in the middle of the update the phone restarted, and when it booted back up again, no signal again. I then went to check for software updates again and just wanted to try downloading it over WiFi. I accidentally clicked the phone info screen instead of software updates and I noticed that the IMEI, IMEI SV, Phone Number and IMSI were all "Unknown". This was really odd. *#06* also brought up an empty IMEI box. Then I clicked software update and it said there were no updates available. What? It just worked a while ago before the signal broke again!
I then pulled the SIM out to run the phone WiFi only until I could figure this out and I noticed that it wouldn't say "No SIM" with no SIM card inserted like it normally would, but would continue to say "No Service" as if there was a SIM but there was just no reception in the area.
I've been trying all day to flash multiple RUU's and the only one that fixes the problem is reflashing factory Mobilicity GB RUU. Then signal works again, however after any restart signal will break again and won't work anymore until another RUU reflash. Is there anything I can do? This is the only phone I have to use and it's driving me nuts! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Please acknowledge that I am not asking for a way to obtain or change my IMEI, as I know that is not allowed. I am asking for a way to fix the No Service issue I've been having.

Now another thing has arises. I try to use it as an iPod/Media player now and just use it connected to WiFi. However the battery dies after about 5 hours of just standby, untouched. It's all because of "Cell Standby" using up battery. It uses up 4 and a half hours of battery and 100% of the time it's without signal. However, even if airplane mode is turned on to disable the cellular radio, it doesn't make any difference to Cell Standby.

I have had this issue twice ... first time it happened maybe 9 months ago and stayed like that for 3 weeks with me constantly flashing and wiping and s-offing no no avail ... one day I pulled out my sim and memory card and when I switched on the device it says "no simcard" it never said that b4 so I switched it off and put back in the sim card and memory card and poof it was suddenly working again...
The first time I recalled not installing anything for months before that event other than one app..... "What's App" I installed what's app and used it fine for 2 weeks and the phone just dropped in the middle of a call and never regained signal.... so I said since that was the only app that I had installed its probably the culprit, so I will never use it again since the phone started working again.
Sadly 7 months later a girl i was talking to kept insisting that I install whats app because she wants to chat more... Against my better judgement I went ahead and did it and it worked for 2 weeks and one morning .... poof "no service" no imei .... and the culprit .....? WHATS APP!!! sadly I have been in this state for a month now with no sign of it fixing itself again... thank you whatsapp... let me know if whatsapp was installed prior to your loss of imei

Actually my Amaze started working again as well! One day around two weeks back all of a sudden it decided to start working again, but I just left it there as I had already bought an Xperia ion to replace it. One day my friend asked if he could borrow it for a week or so, I let him and when I popped his sim in it worked, checked imei, apns, everything was good. However later that day during the lunch hour he took it out and told me there was no signal. First thing I did obviously was check the imei and of course, it had disappeared again. Nothing in window when typing #*06# and in settings imei would say "unknown"
I never used whatsapp before and he doesn't use whatsapp either, it's never been downloaded on the phone so it's not the problem for me. If I reflash GB RUU it will work again and imei will come back BUT only until you reboot, after reboot it will lose imei again. Honestly it seems to have a mind of it's own when it comes to working or not.
I'm Having the same issue right now anyone have any ideas?

Having the same problem too!
Tried removing the sd and sim, rebooting without, reinstalling them, rebooting with, and no luck.
I'm planning to flash the Debloated Stock rom to try that, then I'll try the latest RUU, will report back... (could be a few days)
Debloated stock did not work. Latest ICS RUU did not work. Original, very first, RUU didn't appear to work until I did a restart (without the Sim inserted).
So it's working for now, although it's Gingerbread...

Really? I've tried literally every RUU available for Amaze and still nothing. Before, after flashing a gingerbread RUU the IMEI would work during the first use but would break after restarting. Now when I do any RUU, IMEI won't work under any condition.
I have an Samsung S9 Plus that was an AT&T unit (I think) and I flashed it over to the global firmware so I could use it on Visible (Verizon). It has been working for months, but I have now had this problem happen twice. I get up on a Monday, and notice that my phone has no service. I think it says "No Network Connection" or something like that. The first time I tried many of the usual steps - switching airplane mode, resetting network, wiping the cache, long support chats with Visible. What finally got it working again was putting in another sim(from Red Pocket - AT&T). That made the phone go through a reboot to swap over to the new sim. Then I put the old Visible sim back in. The phone does another reboot, and now everything is working again.
Is there a way that I can get the phone to go through this process without swapping the sims? I would just like to know if there is a more efficient way of fixing this problem when it pops up.

Call your carrier and have them to a reprovision. I had this happen with T-mobile coming from Sprint.. They will have you turn off the phone, do something on their end, and after that it should work.
Just to update, I have switched over to ATT Prepaid. Since the change, I have not had the problem happen. I think it must have been an issue with Red Pocket. Either that or something that got fixed with an update. Just putting these data points out there for anyone else that is having issues like this.
