New GB Build/AOSP ROM question - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a big fan of the AOSP builds, mainly due to their light weight and speed. Launchers like Go Launcher allow me to create 3D effects similar to Sense, so I prefer that.
The issues I am wondering about is the current location; wifi seems to fix it but I'm on the road alot so wifi doesn't always cut it.
My questions- Are AOSP roms built off a source that changes like sense roms? That is, once the 4g signal/location is fixed does that mean AOSP roms will benefit from RUU releases like Sense-based do?
I am trying to figure this out because I use location-based apps for work and play so I have to base my rom of choice on those factors.
Thanks in advance.

If you're talking about the phone giving you a false location, go to Settings>Applications>Development and uncheck "Allow Mock Locations."

The flash a Sense based ROM, get a GPS lock and flash an AOSP ROM method worked for me. Haven't had issues with GPS lock and faulty locations since.

Sense vs. De-sensed (non aosp)

I'm sure this topic has been covered before but I'm not sure I have found my answer;
Is there any advantage to using a de-sensed Rom with a launcher such as Launcher Pro or Go over using a Sense Rom AND an alternate launcher.
Is there a speed or memory management or battery advantage?
I ask this because I like the work of the devs here but would like to use an alternate launcher with their existing framework. Thanks.

I think the battery saving come from using a better kernel and not necessarily the launcher.
Otherwise, i think its just a matter of preference what you use. If I am wrong please correct me.
Hi
Just bringing up an old thread... I also wanted to know the same thing.
Does having Sense mean you can have FriendStream / HTCSense.com accoutn on you phone...
In other words, if you use a non Sense ROM, you cannot l=use the locate phoen feature of HTCSense ?
Plus, any other advantages/disadvantages.
What are some popular Sense / nonSense ROM's ?

[Q] Quick questions re stock ROM

New owner of an SG2, which I'm liking so far. Am coming from N1 Cyanogenmod.
At present I've rooted my phone and am running the stock rom with Launcher Pro.
I'm liking a bunch of the features of the stock rom (well trying them out) and am deciding whether I keep the stock rom or move to a custom rom.
I do have a few questions about the stock rom, which I wonder can be answered here:
- With the pull down menu you have the options of wifi, bluetooth etc in the status bar. Is there anyway of changing these options (for example want to remove bluetooth).
- With the dialler, once I make a call it goes into a screen with a bunch of options, like, save contact, etc. Is there anyway of avoiding this screen and going straight to home? (incidentally you are given the option of "voice call". Is this something provided by your network or another service?)
- Autorotate. Is it possible to NOT have it working on the homescreen, but available in your apps?
In relation to custom rom, what do you guys reckon is as close to stock as possible, but with a bit more customisation. I'm guessing a custom rom would be able to deal with most of my queries.
1) majority of roms have that bar modified where you can slide it across and have upto 12 triggers, although you can't really remove them. However with cm7 and miui you can customize that bar to your hearts content.
2) no idea
3) look in the launcher pro settings, you should be able to set it there so it doesn't auto rotate
Give cm7 a try.

Cheers mate. Was using CM7 fine with my N1, guess just wanted to mix it up a bit. There are a bunch of features I do like about the stock rom though.
I'll run it for another week and then may give MIUI a go.
Checkout jkay mods and themes for stock roms in the theme section.
Can do basically what you want Plus more.
Also many launchers (home screens) can set whether to auto rotate. Set it to off in launcher and leave the system auto rotate on.

Thanks, will have a play with the custom themes.
Also, I presume, if I install MIUI or Cyanogenmod, I could still install the Samsung specific apks?

No, you can not install any Samsung apps on CM. (May be you're thinking you like the stock browser so you want to use it on CM, but you can not).

Sorry for the newb qustions, but is this because of the ROM itself?

Cheers mate. I note you are using GingerMod, may give that a try as it seems to be the AOSP, with the ability to add certain TW apps.

Yes. CM7 and MIUI are build from scratch and doesn't contain anything related to Samsung. So unlike stcok based custom roms, these two roms doesn't support Samsung apps.

Well, the reason you wanted to try is exactly the reason why so many users love GingerMod rom. It has some good apps from Samsung, like the gpu accelerated browser, camera app, fm radio. Rest 95 % is aosp.
So it's pure google experience,no Samsung bloatware, and we can still enjoy some of the real good apps Samsung made.

heh, would love a cyan-samsung bastard child port. If only I had the skills to do that.
Love the ability with Cyan to tweak a whole bunch of settings, but am liking quite a few of the Samsung apps.
Will look into GingerMod as it may be a good compromise.

There is one more reason why i personally like GingerMod.
It is 99% (or 100%) bug free. Infact, i find it more stable than any official firmware.

[Q] Interested in a close to stock well tweaked ICS LPB ROM?

I have been cooking ROM's for quite some time now but am not much of a thread creator.
The cooks on this forum are fantastic and i have learnt a lot from them, but I prefer the Samsung ROM to stay as close to stock as possible.
Ideally, the choice to theme the ROM, add AOSP apps or even remove ringtones should rest with the user and this preference changes from person to person.
Also, excessive removal of system files whose functions are not fully understood can lead to further instability in the already pre-release ICS ROMs.
I have made myself a base ROM with just essential system tweaks and removal of hubs and apps easily downloadable from the market if needed. eg. talkback, google plus etc.
I also have CWM packages for individual needs like adding AOSP keyboard, gallery etc.
If anyone has similar needs, i would be glad to share this ROM and the update packages. It has been very stable especially since the LPB release.
Will develop this thread if i see this ROM useful to others.
EDIT: Published it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22209188
Is your ROM deodexed? I'd be happy to flash it if you could provide more details.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
It is deodexed, zipaligned, rooted etc.
Has some basic tweaks like GPS quick fix, proximity sensor tweaks, battery and performance tweaks etc. Mostly standard stuff most ROMS will have.
Also fixed the data APN issue on LPB.
Post it up in the Development thread.

Yes I would be interested to try. I am just using stock but with crt off and a different systemui.apk for a ics themed status bar.
fix proxy settings, static ip saving. Since in LPB and maybe in previous leaks its not working, im coming from CM9 and this is the only thing preventing me from using this daily.
My work uses a proxy server and after i enter them and press save and go back to check it defaults to none.
Probably can be fixed easily as it works in CM9 since the first leak.
Cm9 has stock ui but it's hw codecs are messed up

[Q] Can stock samsung mms.apk be imported into aokp or aosp roms?

So i have flashed countless custom roms and found alot of little differences i liked in all of them. I have come to find i enjoy the customization options of AOKP and AOSP ICS roms. My only drawback is I (which seems unlike alot of other users) actually like the stock samsung messaging app, the mms that comes along with the aosp or aokp roms is slightly plain, atleast for myself.
If anyone has a fix for this or can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if kinda all over the place with this request, first time posting
Try placing it in system app after doing a Android. Can't hurt although it will probably break being able to text people from the dialer app.

Well i actually tried that once, i do know with similar based roms (ie. SHOstock, Ultimatum..) a copy and paste over the mms.apk in system/app folder followed by a restart did apply and worked fine.
When i attempted to replace mms in aokp or a cyanogenmod variant of some kind it came back with no messaging after reboot
Well from what I have read the stock mms app from samsung will not work because it is apart of the touchwiz interface and will not work on aosp/aokp/cm9! If you want it that bad you will have to go to a touchwiz based rom like shostock2. I actually prefer the stock aosp mms app over the iPhone inspired sammy app! Touchwiz sucks in my opinion.
Hth,
Charlie

System apps won't work across bases (AOSP to Touchwiz or vice versa). Touchwiz to touchwiz or AOSP to AOSP works fine.

Ok, yes i read that somewhere, it was poorly explained in the forum i read though, i wasn't sure if there were some sort of modifications to the apk itself that would allow cross-base application or not. I am trying out Foxhound now, which actually has a decent interface with a dark theme, would you happen to know of any theme options for AOSP messaging?
What so good about Sammy stock MMS app that you have to stick with it?
You can try out GOSMS.
Anyway, most of Sammy apps requires their own frameworks in order to function properly.

Not that I know of. On GB, there was at least 1 AOSP application that worked on Samsung (messaging app, coincidentally). It was from CM, I think; idk what made that work while others didn't.
Again, not that I know of. I've always found AOSP apps aesthetically pleasing, so I never looked for other options.

[Q] Can you help me find or build a ROM?

I had an Incredible for almost 3 years and I loved the setup I had on it. I switched back forth between "Sense-less" (or de-sensed for Rezound users) and AOSP depending on what mood I was in. I was rooted and S-OFF.
I have been browsing through the forums, flashing various ROM, and trying desperately to catch up on all the in's and out's of our beloved phone. I really had my heart set on running CM10 once I got my Rezound, but unfortunately, bluetooth doesn't work on AOSP ROMs and that's a deal breaker. So, I've been shopping de-sensed ROMs and I can't find one that I really like 100%.
Why do I want de-sensed? I use third-party launchers because of the customization and ability to have multiple docks. Therefore, most of the Sense widgets are not needed on my phone.
The features that I am looking for:
- Based of the latest Global RUU, all VZW crap removed
- De-sensed to a degree where nothing becomes "broken" (I want everything to work. Sense camera is a must! Friendstream would be nice for Facebook contact pics.)
- AOSP lockscreen with Caller ID and Music Controls.
- No Volume screen wake.
- Long-press volume to skip songs would be nice.
I think that's it. I'll add some later if I can think of some, but these are the most important to me really. I have tried several ROMs and read the threads on most of the other candidates and I can't find one that really suits me.
If no one can point me in the direction of such a ROM, I have decided to develop my own. I have little Linux/Android experience. I am still S-ON so I have become comfortable with adb. I have a very basic understanding of how ROMs and kernel interact to make our phone work. I have some experience with C++ and VB. All I really need is some guidance.
Can I just re-flash the Global RUU and then de-Sense and de-bloat my phone by removing apks through adb? Then, if I can find Sense-compatible .zips that give me the volume controls I need, they should work right? Is that the same for compatible themes?
What gets broken when you remove Rosie? I can leave Rosie alone if it breaks the camera and such. I can just remove the unnecessary Sense widgets instead.
Is it possible to have the same lockscreen from CM10 on a de-Sensed ROM and have it fully-functional?
I have been thinking about this for a while and I have a ton of questions. If anyone is willing to help in anyway, please let me know. I love the phone, but I am dying for a ROM that really suits my needs.
Look up Adrenaline by Neo. There is a link near the end of the comments
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
I don't think Adrenaline is based off of the newest RUU yet. I also don't want the 5-pt lockscreen if I can't customize it easily. Is there a way to put the regular lockscreen back?
Neo has some pretty sick ROMs. I was running his CM9 until i found out that bluetooth calls don't work.

Ahh, sorry. I didn't notice the note about global. Ineffabilis is based off of global, has a desense option while flashing, and has an option for AOSP lock screen. I've heard good things about it, but haven't run it myself.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
I run Ineff Deus v1.2 (global) de-sensed as my daily driver. I use a combination of Nova Prime and WidgetLocker. I believe the AOSP lockscreen is set up the way you're looking for. I know there's an option to bypass the lockscreen for incoming calls. There are a ton of options thru the Aroma installer and more in the MikTweaks menu to customize your setup.

Neomax by Neo is pretty close to what you described, themed to look like AOSP, has Sense camera but rest stripped.
It hasn't been updated to be based on global, but you can still run neomax on top of global firmware and benefit from radio improvements. I ran Neomax for two months before switching to CM9 RAGE... CM 10 is still in alpha mode and may be a while in getting to usable state on Rezound.
The good news is that apps like Nova Launcher, SwiftKey and the XDA Google Now for ICS port give you early access to Jellybean features.
