Hi,
While trying to root my tab and getting to to detect adhoc so i can tether my phone. I came across zedomax on youtube about installing busybox first. While following zedomax's steps on the youtube video, i came across a static screen during bootup and I cannot solve the issue but to reinstall stock rom.
The problem is now when i bootup my tab, there's an Exclamation point on the bottom of the screen. Everything else after bootup runs fine and the tab appears to be fully functional. My question is, what does the exclamation point icon mean and will it have any negative effect on my tab?
Thanks in advance,
D.W
Anyone familiar with the Exclamation mark icon during bootup?
I have same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184003
But mine only happens when I try to go back to stock Honeycomb KF3, it goes away when I update to KF4 or Touchwiz. I figure it has to do with bootloaders or something because mine didnt start until I flash KFC with ODIN when it first released.
That happens because of the root access, its just an icon to warn you that your device is rooted and it will not harm your system
Thank You. Just making sure it wont' affect the performance or brick my tab.
I had the touchwiz update but didn't like it, so i'm back to stock 3.1 honeycomb.
much better. i couldn't stand the gray touchwiz taskbar.

It has nothing to do with root, i have rooted my tab and no triangle.
The triangle appears when you have flashed a rom that is not 100% Samsung, like a custom rom. Exactly what in the rom triggers it i don't know.
When this triangle appears it also triggers the flash counter that you can se when you put the tab into download mode. The counter counts how many times you have flashed a custom rom.
Right now it seems that no one knows how to reset the counter, on the SGS2 you can reset it with a JIG, perhaps a similar method can be applied on the tab?
To remove the triangle you have to flash a stock rom, but the counter does not reset.
Thanks,
/qsec
Does the counter only change when you flash an unofficial ROM via Odin, or does it change when using ROM Manager also?

I'm not sure but i believe so. I do not think it has anything to do with the method of flashing.
I think the counter triggers when the custom rom has bits and pieces from different roms, like the kernel from one rom and the baseband from another and so on.
But like a said i'm not sure at all and i'm no developer.
Just a heads up.
Thanks,

OK cool.
I have flashed clockworkmod recovery and my counter is still at 0, guess it only applies to the ROM you flash?
Thanks

Yes i think so.
For example i have flashed stock KH7 rom with Odin and no triangle and zero count. I have also returned to stock KG9 with a Nandroid backup without any problem or counts.

Hmm weird.
I am dubious about installing a custom ROM if there is no way to return the device to complete stock?
Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure you can download the stock rom and flash it with odin. This includes the recovery too
some explanation concerning the yellow exclamation mark (no speculation, i know that from my SGS2, it's the same there):
this exclamation mark shows you that you flashed a non-samsung signed kernel (binary) at least for one time with odin! doing this, you also increased a counter which count's the number of such flashes.
if you odin-flash a signed kernel afterwards, the exclamation mark will disappear, but the counter will obviously not reset!
there is one way to reset the counter tough (as well as eliminating the exclamation mark WITHOUT having the need to flash a signed kernel): look at ebay for an so called USB-JIG. with this little device you can reset the counter, boot into download mode etc. drawback: it has a micro-usb port, therefore you would need 2 adapters as well!
how does the jig work:
it has shortened lines of the usb-interface with some resistors on it. the resulting resistance has to be 301 Kohm.
more info can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
additionally you could always avoid the exclamation mark by NOT using odin to flash new kernels, but CWM!

So if I flash ROM's and Kernels via ClockworkMod ONLY, I will never get the counter increasing, or exclamation mark during boot?
Even if I enter downloading Mode?
Thanks

Just looked up the USB-JIG, looks like a useful piece of kit to have in my collection!
Any idea where I could get adapters / crossovers?

as long as you NOT flash custom kernels with ODIN everything will be ok!
all people who HAVE the mark already: flash a stock-kernel with ODIN (and your current kernel back with CWM afterwards, if you need it)

I looked around and apparently rooted phones are getting the yellow triangle with an "!" in it when they turn their phone on, just underneath the screen with the model number. Now it turns on and works fine, but it's a new phone and I'm especially paranoid of stuff like this for new stuff I pay alot for. Its a Virgin/Bell Galaxy 2 that I unlocked via instructions here using the Superoneclick etc etc. to use with my Rogers SIM. I have 0 knowledge about ROMS and flashing and what not but I'm a quick learner. If someone could help me out in removing the yellow triangle or point me in a direction that I can read and find info on I would greatly appreciate it.
I've heard that you can remove it by flashing the stock kernel again. You can also remove it with a USB jig. You can make one or just buy one for a couple of quid. Here's a link.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....533864&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1156
Yes, flashing back a stock kernel via Odin removes the triangle.
As you likely have root by then, you can also flash back to a custom kernel without using Odin (i.e. directely on the phone) which will not trigger the triangle again (it only comes out of hiding when flashing custom stuff via Odin).

simple would be getting a USB Jig in eBya. Solves "Yellow Triangle" and "Resets binary counter" as well
I thougt it is connected to the CF-Root kernel?
Does this triangle shows up if the custom binary count is higher than 0 or is it only connected to the CF-Root?
I'll test it for you!
Yeah, the Jig is the (very) easy (and neat) way.
However, there is a few rough guides on how to get rid of it and reflash a custom kernel.
The term "flash" refers to writing all the OS related stuff (kernel, system and the such) into the reserved internal storage space, BTW.
The term is derived from the fact that the OS / FW is stored on a "flash" memory.
Basically it is:
- root the current system
- flashing an original stock kernel back into the phone using the PC app "Odin" or "Heimdall" (Odin is Windows only, Heimdall is an opensource multiplatform app)
- using the abilities root gives, flashing back the custom kernel of your choice either via special Apps (running on the phone, CF-Root comes with CWM Manager for example that allows to flash kernels) or plain and simple via dd from a terminal console (Terminal App can be downloaded from the market) or an ADB shell.

Neither.
The triangle simple shows that the last kernel flashed via Odin was a non Samsung signed one.
It's independant of the custom binary counter and does not only apply to CF-Root, happens with everything not comming from Samy.
Flashing a Samy signed kernel again removes the triangle, but the counter stays unchanged.
As mentioned already, the USB Jig resets both.
and because you have root, after using the Jig you removed to triangle, reset the counter to zero and can now flash anything you want via CWM (ClockWorkMod) without triggering the triangle or counter again.
And in case of warranty, I think flashing a stock kernel with Odin including repartition and PIT file should get rid of all the traces.
Thanks for all the help guys I just ordered the Jig off ebay should be here soon. Will my phone still stay unlocked if I use the jig?

Hi
I want to root my phone now but very un sure on how to get the yellow triangle not to appear after rooting??
Theres instructions through chainfire but i can't get my head around it in all respects??
the root process seems ok to do but I wouldnt want this triangle everytime I reboot. .
Thanks
Why do you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, does it hurt you somehow?
The yellow triangle indicates that the running kernel is not signed by Samsung. Obviously to get rid of this you have to flash a Samsung-signed Kernel.
While root usually will still work, obviously other features that are depended on the modded kernel won´t work.
If you're really struggling with chainfire's instructions, there's an excellent total baby-steps guide for noobs here.
But you can learn to live with the triagle - how often do you watch a reboot screen anyway?
Its pretty simple,
After rooting,
1- Flash back the Stock kernel via Odin.
2- Flash the Zimage from your SD card via CWM, which you need to copy to your SD card before step 1 from your rooted kernel.
Regards.

You don't need to do point 1 do you? Can't you just flash the kernel from CWM app?
Also replacing the stock kernel will still not reset the count will it?
If you want to get yourself a usb jig, this will reset the binary counter and remove the triangle. Search the forums for usb jig, plenty info there
Yeah so only the jig will reset the counter.
I assume that the download mode would still show custom unless you reflash the stock kernel as above through cwm app on a cfroot phone?

One thing I'm a little hazy on...
Okay say I have stock phone with KF3 kernel. I root using CF-Root (KF3) kernel and everything is great apart from the yellow box. If I re flash the using the cwm app with the stock kernel again this will remove the yellow box, overwrite the cf-root with the samsung stock kernel (thus removing cwm) but still leave the phone in a rooted state?
In this instance would I be able to install a custom rom using the stock kernel that I now have OR do I need to re-flash (using Odin) the previous CF-Root kernel to get cwm back?
I haven't done this process as yet as I'm waiting for a jig to arrive to do it that way but I'm trying to understand why you'd want to put the stock kernel back (as is shown in numerous guides)?
Also if I use the jig and it removes the yellow box and resets the counter, does it factory reset the kernel or will I still have cwm on there? If the later, will the download mode show a custom rom/kernel or samsung rom/kernel?

Hey there,
I wanted to search first but I can't from my phone and since I need an answer pretty quickly I thought I'd just post now. I current run the latest nightly of ICS and was wondering if there is a way to flash back to stock (with Odin or recovery) so that it seems to be untampered with. Another question is will the stock firmware get updates OTA or is that functionality broken now thanks to the modding.
Oh and yes I have run triangle away to remove the triangle
Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

To answer your questions:
1. Yes, you can flash back to stock with Odin. Just download the official stock firmware for your region at Intratech's thread
2. If you flash the stock FW, you can still get updates via Kies. Samsung isn't that much of a d*ck.
3. Triangle Away also resets the flash counter, but please go to download mode to check whether your current flash counter is correct since Triangle Away can hard-brick your phone
thanks for your help this is exactly what I was wondering
I've already reset the counter correctly with triangle away, but what do u mean by it hardbricking the phone? when it enters download mode it bricks or what?
he was being cautious..... no worries you already done running triangle away.
what he meant to always check what the triangle away says and what download mode says about counter.

Oh I see, thanks for the clarification I'll keep that in mind if I ever need to run triangle away again
Hi all.
My SGS2 needs to be sent in for repairs in the imminent future, and in preparation I unrooted my phone and flashed a Stock ICS build (my carrier is Optus, Australia). Before this I was running a few different GB roms. When I boot my phone I do not get the yellow triangle (I assume this is because I am running official Samsung firmware), but if I put the phone into download mode, it still shows the 8 custom flashes I did earlier.
My real question is will Chainfire's Triangle Away app remove the binary count even if the triangle isn't there?
And a better question would be, would having official firmware be enough to still claim warranty, or would I need to have both official firmware and a "0" custom flash count?
Thanks for any help!
I believe Samsung may throw a stink about the counter, even if you are on stock/official firmware. This counter would imply that you have voided your warranty previous to the current state of the phone and it's OS
To be safe I would use the Triangle away app
EDIT: Yes, the app does reset the flash counter. See https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en
Its always safe to clear the counter before returning it for service. yes the triangle away app will clear the counter with/without triangle.
download it for free from here

Thanks guys!
I tried to run the app but it's telling me I need Superuser access...
Does this mean I need to root the phone, use the triangle away app, then UNroot the phone?
Sorry if this is obvious... Not overly confident of my ability to keep the phone unbricked haha.

You are correct. Root the phone first, use the app, then unroot.
Thanks!
So it will still think it's Samsung official after that process?
You'll need a rooted ICS firmware already on your phone.
Check the Triangle Away forum to ensure its working with your firmware version.
Flash Triangle Away, this will remove Yellow Triangle and reset Custom Counter to 0.
Flash official unrooted firmware using Odin, this wont increase your Custom Counter as its official. Use a firmware thats specific to your region.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Job done.
Also check my sigi for links
Thanks! This forum is full of amazing help.
So theoretically I could follow those steps then flash the stock ROM a thousand times and the flash counter would remain at 0?
If it makes you feel any better I went to Optus 3 weeks ago with a phone that wouldn't turn on with ICS for another region with root and they fixed it.
I think my USB jig cleared the counter to 0 though. I couldn't connect my phone to dl mode or anything
The app removes the triangle as well as the counter
Yeah I tried using the jig a while ago but I think I have the newer bootloader, so it didn't do anything, which was very disappointing.
I'd just hate to take it in then have them tell me to get bent because I rom'ed it.
Ok so let me know if theres a problem with my process.
I'm using ICS and the kernel is XWLP4.
There was no LP4 in Chainfires thread but I read that I could use the next closest one. So I should flash something like "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_O2U_LP3-v5.4-CWM5.zip" and then triangle away then use the Optus stock ICS?
UPDAT: I tried this method and it worked perfectly! Thanks so much to everyone who helped.
has worked like a charm for me everytime i put stock firmwares on my phone
Safest way is to flash a really old firmware and thus flashing the old bootloader. Now reset the counter with an usb jig. Done.

Or just flash the old bootloader.
My friend has an S2 he wants me to root, and I'm having trouble.
I've tried the one click method from windows computers though they don't seem to work as he is on ICS.
The ICS alternative says reboot to recovery etc, though obviously he doesn't have recovery so I can't do that either.
Of course I'm going to be told to root it via flashing, though while following the guide, the phone soft-bricked and wouldn't turn on (yellow triangle) though luckily I found the Orange UK Restore Package and now it's back to stock!
When I tried to flash it said use the most similar kernel you can find, and so I did, and it didn't work!
The kernel he has is I9100PBVLP6 and there was not an insecure kernel of that available.
Can anyone help?

Your friend has the UK Orange NFC phone. Use LP7 Insecure kernel.

You will have the yellow triangle after flashing and your binary flash counter would have increased by 1.
You can use triangle away to remove the symbol and reset the flash counter to zero.

Head over to here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona, & find the specific firmware for your friends device & flash in PDA via Odin! (no need to find a seperate kernel to flash, as it will be included in the official firmware package!)
At this point you'll have no yellow triangle on your boot up splash screen, & no flash count!
Then head over to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 & root the device using the instructions given! (you'll need an external sd-card in your device to put the files on for rooting!)
Still no yellow triangle on boot splash screen, & also no extra flash count!
Finally, install Triangle Away from here "IF NEEDED": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en, & "MAKE SURE" it gives the exact same flash count number as is in download mode, then click "Reset Counter".
Job done, official stock firmware with root (fast, stable & reliable!) with no yellow triangle or flash count visible!
