[TUTORIAL] Changing the ERI Banner from "Verizon Wireless" to your own text!
UPDATE 8/27/2011 - An even easier way has been discovered. Apparently, eri.xml can be decompiled and dropped in /data, and it works just the same, however, you will loose the changes if you wipe data; that's the only drawback (which may make the extra couple minutes to do a hex edit, worth it if you are using this as an anti-theft deterrent). Thanks to @chevyowner for pointing this out.
This is the easy way. No recompiling needed, no zipping up files, nada. All you need is a computer, a hex editor (don't worry, this is super easy), and Metamorph from the Android Market.
Download the zip file attacted and extract it to your SD card, for us this is going to be the internal sd card, although I guess it doesn't matter, just easier this way.
Open up your hex editior, I use HxD, which is free.
Drag and drop eri.xml file provided in the attacted zip, into the editor
Scroll down to 01E0
OVERWRITE "Verizon Wireless" to anything you want.
Note: You are overwriting "Verizon Wireless", do not backspace. If what you want is less than 16 characters, then after your text, go over to the hex side and fill the rest in with zeros until you come to 02 02. DO NOT overwrite 02 02 with zeros!!!

Save. Then move the .bak file (if your hex editor created one), to the desktop, next apply the "theme" in Metamorph.
I don't fully understand do you edit Eric file in downloaded zip or the stock one on your phone?

You don't need to edit anything from your phone directly. The provided zip file has the eri that you need to edit. Once your done, make sure the "ChangeERI" folder is in the AndroidThemes folder of your sdcard, then just fire up Metamorph.
Thanks 0vermind for all of your contributions. I can see rom developers using this for roms in the future.

I think you should post this kind of stuff in either development or themes & apps. It is more related and general is for basic questions

Ugh. I wish 2nd-init worked for Gingerbread on our phones. I want to try porting over Honeycomb 3.2.
[/offtopic]
It worked...very easy it just is confusing when you say to download to phone sd-card you do that after you download to computer desktop and do the edit, then the theme program looks for the xml file, so unzip-do edits-put folder unzipped on phone and point theme program to changeeri.xml and go just to clarify...works great thanks...
Doesn't really matter which order for that step you can unzip to your hard drive or to you sd card.

Yeah im gonna try this later after I make a backup since the app says it had potential to mess something up. I might just be paranoid but I also couldn't get a straight answer of this being confirmed to work right on x2. Some people said yes and some said no lol. I know it might have been user error somehow but the app is so straightforward how could someone mess it up lol.
I think this should work but i don't use my x2 any more it just sits in its box.
but attached is eri.xml editable with notepad++ for example on widows
after editing all you shoud have to do is push it to /data and reboot

Only works on stock, which is interesting. I wasn't aware of this method working at all, cause all I would ever get was "Roaming Indicator Off." Anyways. I'll update the OP. Unfortunately, if you happen to be using a rom other then something based on stock, or you wipe your data, it disappears, so it has it's drawbacks. Nice find though.

Does it matter how many characters? Do you have to worry about going over/under 16 if under just replace with blank space.
Has anybody tried to do this with any version of Eclipse 2.0.x? I tried, but was unsuccessful. The eri.xml file contains multiple "Verizon Wireless" entries. I modified all of them, then used metamorph and it says it could not find it.
Any help would be much appreciated. THANKS to all!!
Has anyone had luck changing the banner on a Droid 4?

Nice theme. Sent some donation love your way
i've been waiting for this! before i complain, i'd like to thank you, i'm such a huge fan of the stock android interface, the new blur stuff was making my eyes bleed..
is there any way i can exclude this from installing the droid 1 sms/mms app[mms.apk]? i'm using the modified sms app that comes with the epic rom and installing this theme messes seems to break it.
something to note- i used 7zip to browse through the theme zip and noticed a conversations.apk.
the interesting thing is that before installing your theme, the 'text messaging' app[conversations.apk] works.
after installing, i notice that there is an mms.apk. i used root explorer to rename it to .bak and the 'messaging' app that appeared after installing your theme disappeared.
but whenever i open 'text messaging' it just closes. no FC no error, it just closes.
Try reinstalling the conversations to apk by clicking it in root explorer. I got my terminal emulator to work when it was doing the same thing by doing that

Sure, just open the zip file and navigate to /system/app. In there you will want to delete conversations.apk
I actually didn't even notice it was different. I will add the stock conversation.apk later. Thanks for the info

Where did you see mms.apk? If you go to /system/app inside the zip file, there is no mms.apk... It must've came from whatever ROM you're using.

yea i think i may be mixed up. i have to do some testing, i'll report back.
i also noticed that putting this theme on top of the epic rom makes doubles of a couple apps.
for example, now there are two music players. when you try to open either, it asks what you'd like to complete the actoin with, 'com.android.music' or 'com.google.android.music'
i'll compile whatever errors i can find for you and report back

if anyone is interested i'll post it.
I'm assuming this has the Stock D1 icons (the ones in stock android 2.0-2.2)?
Is there any way I can extract those icons and put them in another theme?

also job as always. guys if you use the work of these developers remember to donate because they dont get paid for these things.
Ok guys, I'm looking to everyone who knows how to theme to contribute. I've been scouring the internet and I just cannot find a definitive HOW TO for creating a theme. There are bits of information here, dead links there, and lots of going back to square one.
I'm hoping we can pull together as a community and get the information posted up. I can take that info and add screenshots afterwards for whatever you guys contribute.
What I've Gathered:
Create a Nandroid backup in case of a softbrick!
The easiest way to create a theme is by using NinjaMorph. NinjaMorph is an app in the market, there's a paid version and a free version.

Once you have NinjaMorph, you can open .apk's to edit the images and XML files inside of them. Open NinjaMorph on your phone and start a New Project. After that, navigate to system then framework and open up framework-res.apk. Once you open it, NinjaMorph will extract everything in that APK. In our case, framework-res is one of the big boys in making a theme, namely the status bar. Leave NinjaMorph and connect your phone to your computer. After mounting your phone, navigate to your phone's internal memory, not your SD Card, and go to the AndroidThemes folder. In this folder is a folder called workspace. In that folder is your newly extracted framework-res.apk. You can copy the contents of this folder to your computer and then edit the files as you feel necessary.
I recommend keeping a copy of the original workspace so that you can revert any changes, if you don't like them. Also a good idea is to keep a nandroid backup handy in case you screw something up and softbrick your phone.
Once you are done making files, you need to replace the old files that are inside of the workspace folder on your device and then unmount your phone. Go back to NinjaMorph and then hit finish your project. Ninjamorph will automatically re-apk the files into a framework-res.apk and then re-apply the framework-res.apk. Your phone will reset and you should be good to go.
Now, you CANNOT change the clock color or the text color of the notifications list unless you edit the services.jar file from your phone. This is where we need more information. I'm hoping the good people of XDA can chime in and help everyone benefit and get some seriously sick themes coming out. We can't until everyone spreads some information on how to do this!!
Thanks for this useful post!

1 If I want to edit the status bar Whats the png name and where's it located?
2. How do I change the png icons color? Like without it turning into a .img or a. Gif?

The png file is status_barxxxx_9
This is how I do...
Adb pull and rename the extension to .zip open framwork-res.apk.zip with 7zip and extract only the files you want to edit, make changes and put the file back into the zip file and rename back to framwork-res.apk adb push.
Reboot...

It's just a theme maker. You can change the statusbar color and design (Sense-looking, Cyanogen, etc.), the volume bars and notifications menu. It's just a quicker way of customizing your phone, without having to modify the framework and everything individually. It's safer and less advanced, but of course, it has its limitations since it cannot theme everything you could by decompiling, and such and such.
Looks like this:

I can't get it to work I get a (Status 0) error. The workaround they suggest is:
1. Unzip your ROM and find
META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary file
2. Put this file in the UOT zip (overriding UOT's file)
but, I there isn't a update-binary file in the ROM! I go into META-INF/com/google/android and the only file is /update-script. Help me!

Ya i just pulled the two file right out of my phone with file explorer the system-ui.apk and system-framework or whatever it is and followed the directions with amend scripting and it worked great.
^Yeah, I just forgot to switch to amend scripting.
i tried to use it but only got as far as making a settings.uot
anyone that know what they are doing willing to make this a theme for a stock rom?
just remove the txt extension on the end and upload to the UOT Kitchen?
You have to upload your framework-res.apk and systemui.apk then go to summary and click pickup...then it goes to the pickup page and it takes 15-30min for your theme to be made, use that settings file go back go straight to summary tab upload all needed files and cook it then just sit on the pickup page it will auto reload until your theme pops up then download and apply...do you know where to get the apk files you need, i pulled mine straight off my phone with es file explorer. Let me know if you have trouble
Is your phone rooted? what version OS are you running?
I put together a few mods from other places and thought I would share them.
MIUI Battery bar from pvyParts
Center Clock from TheGrammarFreak
Nav Bar from evilisto
This will replace your SystemUI and framework-res apks, so as always make a backup, as I am not responsible for anything that happens. But this is the result:

You can't really tell, but the MIUI battery bar is there. This will also completely disable your capacitive buttons! I also put up a revert zip that will put things back to normal if you need it.
Just flash the according file of your choosing. Once that is installed you can change all the colors for the bar in the BatteryBarSettings app.
The "text" version only has the back, home, search, and multitask buttons in text. It is more of a test and that's the only buttons I use down there. If anyone has any ideas for different buttons(color, font, etc) let me know, I'm not good with Photoshop, but I can do some basic things. So please let me know what you think!
As far as I know, this is CDMA specific, because the mount points in the updater-script are different for GSM.
Nice!

It is a rom edit. And easy, but the thing I am looking to do is disable the lights to the buttons. I know how to do it once you are booted into the rom, but I would like to make the edits pre-flash, and its kicking my butt.

Sure go ahead.
And I made the init.d script but for some reason it doesn't execute on boot. There are other init.d scripts there so I'm sure his ROM supports them but now I'm all confused lol

Hmm I tried just deleting them in atmel but I didn't try the ones in generic. That's why it wouldnt work for me.

Yeah you need to do it to both files. Or it will still work. Sweet deal, please let me know if it works. I wouldn't mind learning how the scripts work...

Okay that didn't work so I'm going to try again on his next update and if I still get nothing I will ask him whether or not the ROM supports init.d
And if you want to learn a little about init.d, you can PM me
I was just using the kitchen to add the ffc fix'ed zImage, and I noticed that it said the rom doesn't support busybox-runparts(init.d). but I've never messed with the kitchen that much so I'm not sure how true it is.
edit: just tried to add it in and it kept saying the rom already supported it. weird.
Yeah I just got the same thing. Weird!
Supposedly it does support them.
Couldn't you just put the edited files in the correct directories in the flashable zip? Then flash?
Nope I tried that and it didn't work.

Maybe you need to have the updater-script in the zip set permissions..
Small mod to the simple mms theme. The rest are unchanged for now.

Known issue: Links from others are the same color as the background. Visible if you tap the message on any text.
Added dark version, untested by me. Make a backup of your original if using.
Windows (assuming you have sdk/adb installed and adb path set)
Download attacked LGMms3.apk
Move LGMms3.apk on your pc to \android\sdk\platform-tools\ (or wherever you have adb installed)
*If using dark version be sure to delete -dark from the apk name
Connect phone to pc with usb
open command prompt as administrator
first type
adb devices and make sure it sees your phone
adb shell sysrw
adb push LGMms.apk /system/app
adb shell sync (not sure this one is even needed)
adb shell sysro

Phone
Use a root explorer copy LGMms3.apk to /system/app/ and make sure the file has rw permisions.
This method worked for me once with no problem but the second time resulted in force closes. So use at your own discretion.

Awesome, really sick of the stock themes but this looks great; will give it a try when I get settled at my temporary home.
Please help
tried the phone method and now i didn't have any sms app in my phone
it gone away!!!, please help!!!!
It normally removes the icon from your home screen. Look in your app drawer.
I used the Root Explorer method and everything seems to work properly.
Can you create a dark holo version? I tried too but just replacing the png didn't work, so I tried decompiling (keyword "Tried").
I'll attach the png I made to match the size and resolution of the other ones. At least I hope it matches.
PS: It shouldn't look 'streaky' on the phone. If it does, may just a plain black bg?
It's because they are .9.png can't just edit them and drop them in. But yeah I can add a dark holo tomorrow morning ish.
Edit: actually might have to be tomorrow or the day after.

Greatly appreciated! I am rocking the light holo version and it works perfectly. I'm just a fan of darker backgrounds. Thanks
Any help with this sentence "(assuming you have sdk/adb installed and adb path set)"?
I used to have sdk/adb but don't anymore and now I can't seem to figure out how to get it again.

For some reason adb didn't work so I pushed it with file explorer and like the OP said it is force closing. How can I fix?
EDIT: Got it fixed, deleted apk and fixed permissions.

You get the SDK from Google.
I'm pretty sure the freegee zip has adb bundled with it too. To use that you would just open cmd and navigate to your freegee folder and then run the commands.
It should also be in the root zip.
Edit:
Added dark version. Did not test. May or may not work, might not look right yada yada.
Make a backup of your original before attempting to use.
Apk attached to first post. Rename LGMms3-dark.apk to LGMms3.apk after download.

Yeah didnt even think about that, just edited the files i edited on the other one. Didnt need to do anything to that screen the first time. Ill update it when i can, think i have free time sunday. Not going to touch the dialer though. Dont even want to look at it but probably more .9.s to mess with then i feel like messing with. I just did mms as holo because i knew it would just be a few edits.

Do you reckon you could make this a .zip that we could flash, or an .apk that we could install?
