I woke up this morinng 6:45am CST to Verizon OTA update (4G) downloading. I am not very good with this stuff so I apologize in advance for my ignorance. My phone is rooted and running 2.2xx (S-off). I accepted the OTA and the phone rebooted only to leave the phone stuck at the HTC screen. I was able to recover and reflash old rooted rom. So the phone is functional now. I wish to be able to actually install this new OTA in case this is 2.3 coming down from Verizon. Can anyone tell me the steps I need to take to make this happen while leaving my phone rooted?
If leaving the phone rooted is not an option for receiving this OTA update, what steps should I take to make the OTA update complete successfully? Thanks in advance!

You can't do updates while rooted, if you want the update you need to unroot. I'm in Dallas too and I didn't get any update notification, weird.

This is pics of OTA
The updates are real...
Can you point me in the right direction to unroot?
THANKS!
That is the most recent update it is not a new one sadly. Right from VZ software update PDA it list Note: The size for this software upgrade is 73.5MB. Soon but not soon enough GB will be here.
That sucks... I find it odd that it just started bugging me overnight but I am (patiently) awaiting GB. Thanks for input.

as the title says, after rooting, i am unable to check for any firmware updates. i realize it doesnt mater right now as there is noithing out right now, but i like to check often just in case tmobile releases something or samsung. when i go to check for updates by selecting settings>software update and then a warning message pops up: DM initalisation is not ready, Check network or SIM card
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
I was about to ask this same question, and yes i am also rooted. Just wanted to post that you are not alone on this one.
thats good to know, i was beginning to wonder if i was the only one having this problem, for now i unrooted and flashed back to stock using odin, but i miss having root and some of the apps i was using. I am not willing to give up the ability to check for new firmware though as my source at work told me that updates are coming in the next 2 weeks and that we should be getting a text message about them in the next week or so. and just so people know, it wasnt a tmobile customer service rep, i work for deutsche telekom so we here things first usually.
I have this same issue, where I'm unable to check for firmware updates. I am not rooted though... I just bought the phone today and when I click the 'Software Updates' option it says 'No firmware' in a pop-up message. This problem is not only associated with rooted devices.

Read the first post again... yours is the normal message that is displayed when no firmware update is available...
Also, I'm rooted and the update seems to be working fine.
I'm rooted and it pops no firmware.

If I flash back to stock it works fine when I use odin to go back to stock, but if I reroot it says the same thing. Nothing ever stops it from saying what I posted in the OP. I need some help funding a fix or ok won't be able to get the froyo update when it releases.

If I use oclf to root and apply the fix, then unroot using oclf, will the factory ota not work?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Duuude don't worry about it. People will post ROM clockwork backups of the froyo release / stock odin flashes of it / etc.
Anyone will be able to update, however they do so... And just wait til you hear about it THEN unroot and update
yep i'm rooted to and it checks for filmware just fine .

... *sigh* Because there isn't a UPDATE for the Vibrant.
IF I ROOT, WILL I GET OTA UPDATES?
Yes. Rooting will not prevent this, unless you flash a custom ROM that will block receiving the OTA update. If you do receive and download the OTA update, you will lose root. Typically within hours of the OTA becoming available, thanks to some fine XDA folks you can get the update WITH root. You would simply need to download and flash the update like a normal ROM.

Rooting doesn't mess with your OTA updates, when you update with the OTA it will remove your ROOT. The only way to interfere with OTA's are flashing custom ROMs.
But you cannot get the ota update when it releases if the check for update option under settings is not working. All I want to know is why the firmware update option is broken and how to fix it.

When I first got my phone I got the message Check network or SIM card. I rooted the phone and still got that same message. I restored to origanal and got the message'No firmware'. Now again I am getting Check network or SIM card.

It seems like your phone was more than just rooted. What method did you use to root?
Note: Yeah, the "No Firmware" message is the normal message you get if there's no update available, aka, your phone is searching for and/or receiving OTA updates just fine.

This was my plan. Although, I'm reading posts that imply that even though a phone is rooted, if the user hasn't flashed a custom ROM, they'll still get the OTA update, and getting the OTA update will unroot the phone.
When this happens, root-necessary apps like ryanza's lag fix, titanium backup and android system info won't work anymore right? Will they need to be uninstalled and reinstalled? Or will I just need to re-root?
Sorry, I'm new to Android and don't know the typical process stock ROM root users go through with OTA updates.
Genuinely, thanks for any feedback.
Yes I wanna know this too. I'm holding off on getting apps for root only because I think they might mess something up. Also I thought I read set cpu spook might mess up the vibrant running oclf. Anyone?

I'm currently rooted, have titanium backup, deleted a bunch of bloatware, but that's about it. Will this screw up my phone when I update to Froyo via OTA update? OR can I just safely update when T-Mo rolls out froyo?
Thanks in advanced!
EDIT: Oh, and lets say I called T-Mo and got an unlock code, and unlocked my phone RIGHT NOW with the current FW, JID, will I lose the unlock?
Bump, anybody have a solution to my question?

Your YMMV. Last time Tmo rolled out JI6, many people with removed bloatware complained about issues. Stuck at Boot up. Not sure, if you would have any issues. only time will tell. If you have a backup of your stock, you can restore and manually force a update request once its rolled out. hope this helps.
=/ I don't have a backup of my stock
What do I do then?
My understanding is the update.zip file from rooting was causing the brick issues. If an ota comes all you have to do is unroot your phone before you install. You can be on a custom rom. I recieved an ota notification while on Bionix and after unrooting I accepted, installed and had no issues. Hopefully that answers your question.
regardless, if an OTA comes I would not accept it. Chances are that if YOU got an OTA update, it was on XDA days/weeks before you got it... and they should have a stock version with Root enabled that you could just flash.
If you do not have a backup, make one now! It's too easy to not have one. It's in the sticky if you do not know how.
I just went upstairs to get my wife's phone so I could root it for her and flash clockwork. Saw something in the Notifications bar, dropped it down, and it was on OTA update from T-mobile. So I decided to run it first to see what it was....should be done soon. Just wanted to find out if anyone else got an OTA today.....and what it might be.
UPDATE: So it just finished and I went to "about phone" and it's still 2.1 Update 1. ECLAIR. So I don't know what it was. Think I'm just gonna root and flash anyway.....oh well. If anyone has any thoughts they'd be appreciated.
The T-Mobile update was just some bug fixes. Keis has the froyo update.
Yeah I knew it was available via Kies.... I just wasn't sure what the OTA was.
When i did the ota update then tried to put another rom on it soft bricked my damn phone. Just incase it happens to you, just be careful

Hey guys, I followed one of the tutorials on how to unroot your EVO 3D and bring it back to stock. Before I unrooted my phone, I kept getting a notification that an OTA update was available, specifically version 2.08.651.2 (August 18, 2011). Right now, my software number is 1.11.651.2. I want to update to the newer version, but when I go to Settings > System updates > HTC software update > Check now, it shows no updates are available. I've tried rebooting the phone and checking repeatedly. I'm kinda lost here and not sure what to do. I was wondering if the PG86IMG I downloaded to return to stock disabled OTA updates, but I highly doubt that since it's just a stock image. If I could find a download link to the updates, I could apply them manually through the bootloader. If not, I might suck it up and take my phone into Sprint and get them to see what's up and update my phone there. Either way, what do you think I should do? I want it updated though. Thanks in advance.
so u unrooted using the approved method and then tried to update to 2.3.4 via HTC but it would'nt find the update? Just wanna make sure u know that if u take this update ur only option is to root via HTC's unlocked bootloader which isn't a true unlock... secondly if that is ur desire and the stock image won't find the update then i would check ur source and make sure it's not missing something. I turned off my update check cuz once it checks and finds an update that little icon stays in ur taskbar unless u factory reset and i was waiting to root with teamwin's method so i didn't take the update. if i knew how to pull the image without updating id post it for ya...
Yes sir! I understand that updating my software to version 2.8.651.2 will prevent my phone from being rootable until somebody figures out a method to make it rootable. I have no need for rooting my phone actually. I tried out a few roms, and I would rather stick with a stock unrooted rom in case I ever need to take my phone into Sprint for service. The Sprint store where I live won't do any service to a rooted phone, so I need to be on the safe side. I went to the store today, and unfortunately the only people available at the time were sales representatives, so they were of no help. They just told me to wait and keep trying to update the phone periodically. If it doesn't show any updates within the next month, my only choices will be to either call Sprint and see if they can push the update to my phone or find an update image, transfer it to my phone, and manually update it through the bootloader. I also read on an EVO 4G thread that the phone won't update if it's missing SprintUpdater.apk. I doubt a stock rom would be missing that app though. I had the update notification when I was rooted, but I didn't download it because it would break my root, and now that I'm completely back to stock, I should get the notification. What gives? I wish Sprint would send out the updates all at once instead of in waves. Anybody wanna chime in?

Sadly it looks like a 2.3.6 update
http://www.phonearena.com/news/OTA-...647?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Only for CDMA version?
The official update is the exact same as my leak/soak test. Information on those can be found on this little wikia page I've thrown together
http://droidrzr.wikia.com/wiki/6.12.173
Just ignore the part about it being a leak, I can assure you the MD5 checksums match up exactly.
Which btw they are:
Size: 151.77 MB
MD5: aa7fe6290c0d3a60253922bac413da02

EDIT: yes...this is for the CDMA Verizon XT912 DROID RAZR.

root?
Has any of you able to retain root? Does one click root work still with this update.
*update* did the OTA...lost root. One click root doesnt work...
hey you know if it retains wifi tether ability?
Got up an hour ago and the update was there (Naples, FL) for both my Razr Maxxes. Like a fool I agreed without first installing OTA RookKeeper. My Razr is now 6.12.173 and it lost root during the OTA update. So far, nothing will root that I've found (through trying a reading). Any way to roll back to 6.11 and re-root?
I need to get the WiFi tethering back ASAP!!!
Thx.
Just updated. Restored root with OTA rootkeeper. Can confirm wifi tether and safe strap still work.

I just verified that the zergRush and Gingerbreak 1.2 DO NOT WORK to root 2.3.6 (in case it isn't already posted here). I'm still needing to either root 2.3.6, or roll back to 2.3.5 so I can root again... Any help is much appreciated.
Im gonna wait to install, hopefully a way through the bootloader can be found

Wish I had waited! Glad I told my wife to wait. I'll root her phone and install OTA RootKeeper before I update the phone. At least then I'll only have to roll back one Droid!
it retained the root but you need to re root
OTA and Titanium Backup
OK...sorry for the question, but I've recieved the "nag" screen that the OTA is available. I'm rooted and used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze and "uninstall" several programs.
I can NOT get the OTA to install. It downloads (now on my 4th attempt), reboots the phone, tries to install and it fails.
Phone reboots and I get the "nag OTA" screen again.
I've unfrozen all the programs, but NFL Mobile, VZ Navigator, Slacker, DNLA and News 2.3.5 were all uninstalled and I can't get them back.
Is this what might be holding up the OTA from installing properly?
Thanks for any help.
Shayne
yes... you'll have to reinstall previously uninstalled apps - if you have apk's you can just place them to their original location...
in general there is no reason to uninstall instead of just freezing the applications because if there is something missing, ota is not possible...
