I just went upstairs to get my wife's phone so I could root it for her and flash clockwork. Saw something in the Notifications bar, dropped it down, and it was on OTA update from T-mobile. So I decided to run it first to see what it was....should be done soon. Just wanted to find out if anyone else got an OTA today.....and what it might be.
UPDATE: So it just finished and I went to "about phone" and it's still 2.1 Update 1. ECLAIR. So I don't know what it was. Think I'm just gonna root and flash anyway.....oh well. If anyone has any thoughts they'd be appreciated.
The T-Mobile update was just some bug fixes. Keis has the froyo update.
Yeah I knew it was available via Kies.... I just wasn't sure what the OTA was.
When i did the ota update then tried to put another rom on it soft bricked my damn phone. Just incase it happens to you, just be careful

as the title says, after rooting, i am unable to check for any firmware updates. i realize it doesnt mater right now as there is noithing out right now, but i like to check often just in case tmobile releases something or samsung. when i go to check for updates by selecting settings>software update and then a warning message pops up: DM initalisation is not ready, Check network or SIM card
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
I was about to ask this same question, and yes i am also rooted. Just wanted to post that you are not alone on this one.
thats good to know, i was beginning to wonder if i was the only one having this problem, for now i unrooted and flashed back to stock using odin, but i miss having root and some of the apps i was using. I am not willing to give up the ability to check for new firmware though as my source at work told me that updates are coming in the next 2 weeks and that we should be getting a text message about them in the next week or so. and just so people know, it wasnt a tmobile customer service rep, i work for deutsche telekom so we here things first usually.
I have this same issue, where I'm unable to check for firmware updates. I am not rooted though... I just bought the phone today and when I click the 'Software Updates' option it says 'No firmware' in a pop-up message. This problem is not only associated with rooted devices.

Read the first post again... yours is the normal message that is displayed when no firmware update is available...
Also, I'm rooted and the update seems to be working fine.
I'm rooted and it pops no firmware.

If I flash back to stock it works fine when I use odin to go back to stock, but if I reroot it says the same thing. Nothing ever stops it from saying what I posted in the OP. I need some help funding a fix or ok won't be able to get the froyo update when it releases.

If I use oclf to root and apply the fix, then unroot using oclf, will the factory ota not work?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Duuude don't worry about it. People will post ROM clockwork backups of the froyo release / stock odin flashes of it / etc.
Anyone will be able to update, however they do so... And just wait til you hear about it THEN unroot and update
yep i'm rooted to and it checks for filmware just fine .
im rooted and get the no firmware message

... *sigh* Because there isn't a UPDATE for the Vibrant.
IF I ROOT, WILL I GET OTA UPDATES?
Yes. Rooting will not prevent this, unless you flash a custom ROM that will block receiving the OTA update. If you do receive and download the OTA update, you will lose root. Typically within hours of the OTA becoming available, thanks to some fine XDA folks you can get the update WITH root. You would simply need to download and flash the update like a normal ROM.

Rooting doesn't mess with your OTA updates, when you update with the OTA it will remove your ROOT. The only way to interfere with OTA's are flashing custom ROMs.
But you cannot get the ota update when it releases if the check for update option under settings is not working. All I want to know is why the firmware update option is broken and how to fix it.

When I first got my phone I got the message Check network or SIM card. I rooted the phone and still got that same message. I restored to origanal and got the message'No firmware'. Now again I am getting Check network or SIM card.

It seems like your phone was more than just rooted. What method did you use to root?
Note: Yeah, the "No Firmware" message is the normal message you get if there's no update available, aka, your phone is searching for and/or receiving OTA updates just fine.

This was my plan. Although, I'm reading posts that imply that even though a phone is rooted, if the user hasn't flashed a custom ROM, they'll still get the OTA update, and getting the OTA update will unroot the phone.
When this happens, root-necessary apps like ryanza's lag fix, titanium backup and android system info won't work anymore right? Will they need to be uninstalled and reinstalled? Or will I just need to re-root?
Sorry, I'm new to Android and don't know the typical process stock ROM root users go through with OTA updates.
Genuinely, thanks for any feedback.
Yes I wanna know this too. I'm holding off on getting apps for root only because I think they might mess something up. Also I thought I read set cpu spook might mess up the vibrant running oclf. Anyone?

I woke up this morinng 6:45am CST to Verizon OTA update (4G) downloading. I am not very good with this stuff so I apologize in advance for my ignorance. My phone is rooted and running 2.2xx (S-off). I accepted the OTA and the phone rebooted only to leave the phone stuck at the HTC screen. I was able to recover and reflash old rooted rom. So the phone is functional now. I wish to be able to actually install this new OTA in case this is 2.3 coming down from Verizon. Can anyone tell me the steps I need to take to make this happen while leaving my phone rooted?
If leaving the phone rooted is not an option for receiving this OTA update, what steps should I take to make the OTA update complete successfully? Thanks in advance!

You can't do updates while rooted, if you want the update you need to unroot. I'm in Dallas too and I didn't get any update notification, weird.

This is pics of OTA
The updates are real...
Can you point me in the right direction to unroot?
THANKS!
That is the most recent update it is not a new one sadly. Right from VZ software update PDA it list Note: The size for this software upgrade is 73.5MB. Soon but not soon enough GB will be here.
That sucks... I find it odd that it just started bugging me overnight but I am (patiently) awaiting GB. Thanks for input.
I've got a US Prime and I live in the UK but I still haven't gotten the latest firmware update OTA. I can't check manually either as the check update button is greyed out. I got the first ICS update fine on release day (11th?) but I haven't gotten an update since. I want to be able to restore my root after updating which has ruled out doing it manually. It's annoying me more than it probably should to be honest .
I may have unknowingly stumbled upon a fairly easy solution if you don't want the 2.3.5 OTA update, and don't want to get prompted or have it forced on you eventually. A few days ago, I installed the MOF 2.3.5.ish (locked) Leaked Update using Bootstrap. I had been running it for several days and had no complaints. In fact I really liked it. For some reason only beknownst to the beer I have been drinking all day, I decided to .sbf back to 198_6, unrooted and see if I get the OTA. I didn't, and I eventually contacted live chat. During the course of the conversation, my MEID was checked and according to their system, my phone was on the latest software (198_12) and thus couldn't be updated. My phone was fully stock on the 198_6 build, but she wasn't budging. I mentioned that I had flashed the stock .sbf and she suggested that might be the problem, and that it would void the warranty. Long story short, no OTA update, and no prompts for it. The bootloader is still unlockable if I desire. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Can I safely assume that someone has already tried to reflash their lobotomized Photon back back to 198_6 from 2.3.5 using RSDLite, and that as of now, 2.3.5-from-Moto is unfortunately a one-way ticket to hell?
I thought the 2.3.5 update was still in soak test. That would explain why the rep said you were on the latest version.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
No, the rep stated that the latest version was the _12 2.3.5 build. I also thought the soak test was still going, because the Sprint site still lists the _6 2.3.4 build as the latest version. I dunno; I guess at some point it'll show up on Sprint's site.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
If you are currently rooted on 2.3.4, will the OTA 2.3.5 update actually install? I remember when I was rooted on 2.3.4 (154_5 build) and tried to do the OTA update to the 2.3.4 (198_6 build), it looked like it would install correctly. However after the phone rebooted, on the lock screen, a message on the top would say the "update failed, installed unsuccessfully" or something like that.
Im wondering by me being rooted in my current build 2.3.4 (198_6 build), would keep me updating the 2.3.5 build OTA successfully. I would much rather wait for the ICS upgrade.
i remember the last ota when i went in and disabled my camera shutter sound i could not install the OTA.
i had to go back in and change the sound back to on in order to receive the update and install property then changed it back after.
I think this is a related thread - forgive me if I've hijacked it.
Motorola's site says the 45.4.12 is available for "ALL Motorola PHOTON 4G users" (as does a page on Sprint's site)
(a tried providing links, but as a new member here, I'm not allowed - geez)
Despite this information on Motorola's and Sprint's site and after hours of a course of days "arguing" with L2 support, they say my phone is current with "45.3.6.MB855.Sprint.en.US".
Has anyone received 45.4.12 or now how to get to it? I've requested the 45.3.6.MB855.Sprint.en.US file so I can just apply to my phone via RSD but it presumably does not exists and OTA is the only way to receive it, yet I can't get anyone at Motorola support to admit there's a more recent version available than 45.3.6. (even though I have a second photon that has 45.3.7!)
For Canada, JB is pushed via OTA today on Rogers.
Update # 9.8.2.124.18
I am looking for sbf or fastboot files for xt910 Rogers Razr if someone has found it please post it.
Thanks
Fido
Fido would be appreciated as well.
cannot see it yet.
I just switched back from CM10 to base rogers and I cannot see the system Update (yet).
If someone else finds it please post, I will keep looking for it and post the OTA file once I see it if no one else has.
Thanks for the heads up.
now all we need is root on a windows computer.

a list of all fastboots. you can see 2 rogers there, 1 is ICS, 1 is GB. i forgot which is which tbh lol...
but im having trouble too with the OTA. kept failing on me, and if i manually update it using safestrap3.11 it just fails on verifying phone build.
i defrosted all bloatwares, cleaned cache and dalvik, nothing helps. i really dont want to factory reset just yet, or even trying fastboot since im too lazy to set it up again, but at this point, that seems to be the only solution.
anybody got any ideas?

Hi Red...
Do you have the OTA file? Can you share it?
You may have to fast boot the ics, then root, then voodoo, then upgrade.
Remember you cannot go back to ICS once you upgrade with OTA, and so far root in JB only works from a Linux machine for our xt910's

i got frustrated and caved in. i just fastboot the JB image. check out the sticky in dev forum. works fine. no roots is ok for now, coz all im missing is TiBu and my saved games lol everything else is backed up by Google.
there's an OTA in one of the thread in General forum. it's titled Fido, but somebody on page 2 posted the Rogers OTA files.
but yes, now that i think about it, i should fastboot ICS, root, voodoo, and upgrade. oh well. :fingers-crossed:
I got the update notification but it failed so I tried unrooting

I got the update notification but it failed updating so I tried unrooting my phone and using :
6.7.2-180_SLC-35_R02_SIGNLATAM_SPYDERICSROGERS_P012_A012_HWp2b_CFC_fastboot.xml
I am a noob and I don't really know what I am doing. I finally got that XML to work
but now when I check for updates it doesn't say there are any updates anymore
any ideas? Is the update stored on the phone even if it fails?
