[Q] Just got phone: 3G not working on AT&T - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just bought this phone from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QTBQ2C
The menus first came out in Spanish. I was able to change it to English and I put in AT&T SIM card. Voice is working but 3G is not working. Spoke to Customer service and they Said I have the right 3G plan.
I'm not sure what the right APN settings are.
I don't know which international version this is. It's not the UK version for sure. How do I find out?
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: I9100UHKG4
Can anyone help?
Does this have the right bands UMTA?

Anyone knows?

Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Is AT&T using any of those frequency for 3G?

Does all of the Galaxy S2s have Quad band suppport? Is it because of incompatible firmware that it is not working on AT&T? Can I change the firmware to something that will work on AT&T? Can someone guide me to the thread where I can learn how to change the firmware if that is the problem? Or is there a problem with the APN settings?

Quick search of forum brings up:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983&highlight=Att+apn
Also there are several other AT&T threads in SII 9100 that can point you in the right direction. Once you get the correct APN jot it down if you flash a custom ROM as it may wipe them.
Edit: got the correct thread this time

Here are settings unless you have 4g plan.

[Q] How to Change the modem of T959 to I9000?

I have seen many Thread about I9000 trying to convert T959 modem to use the T-mobile network. What i couldn't find is from T959 to I9000 to make it to the international version.
I have the T-Mobile Vibrant T-959 unlocked with ECLAIR. I know that the network band of this phone is 850/900/1800/1900. i found the result according to Samsung website. I know in another post it was said that it is hardware issue but the hardware is 850/900/1800/1900.
I live in the United Arab Emirates and the network band here is 900/1800 similar to the European or Asian Network. but the T-mobile uses 850/1900 so i couldn't get 3G or any kind of internet connection here, unless i find a WiFi connection. I need the 3G connection on the move.
I want to know is there any way to change the the modem band to I9000? so that i can use a custom rom like Darky which is Stable according to many users.
I would never be using the phone on US T-mobile or any Network in the US.
You might think this Question is redundant and has already been answered but i search every where but it comes back empty.
Your feedback would be highly Appreciated!!!!
I don't think you can actually change your phone's bands.
However, an unlocked US T-Mobile Vibrant should be working on 3G. According to Wikipedia, the two 3G networks in UAE (du and Etisalat?) use the 2100MHz band, which should be supported.
Thanks for the reply, i tried everything but nothing worked.
One more question to ask, what will happen if i flash i9000 rom and radio on a T-mobile phone. Or should i just flash it with a T-mobile rom without changing the radio, and if the sim gets locked I will just unlock?
this is the final question to ask.
Don't know if this helps but I use my unlocked vibrant in the uk, so if European bands are the same...it should work.
You can change roms and I would recommend you should but you can't use an i9000 modem.
Do you have a Sim with a data plan?
Can you text or make calls?

Yes i can make a calls and send Text but no internet connection. I just bought data plan for my sim.
So i Should get Vibrant custom rom not the I9000 rom?
And thank you Guys for your replay, I hope this tread will help other confused users on XDA
I would like everyone to know that it is not good thing to change there modem from T959 to i9000 your phone will brick never do it.
I just flashed a new rom from Trigger 3.2 which upgraded to Froyo 2.2 and i put in the settings for the Access Point and it works perfectly.
So if you have any difficulty accessing 3g or HSDPA connection on android 2.1 just upgrade it and it will work.
How did you conclude you're not on 3G? Do you get EDGE or GPRS internet connection?
So i need the 1800 mhz how can i do?
Flash a i9000 modem and see if it works.

[Q] Korean version GII 250S for AT&T

Hi guys.
I didn't know where to post and I have few questions on my Galaxy SII I bought from Korea and brought to USA.
I have KT's 250S galaxy SII and I'm trying to use it for At&t. I tried to put my At&t sim card in and looks like it is getting some connection. I was able to make a call.
However, looks like it's not getting any 3G connections. I heard there is some modification on the network I need to change to get 3G. Could you please let me know what should I do?
Thank you,
Andy

From the third post down:
Code:
<< Korea Galaxy S2 Network support >>
Double band UMTS 900/2100
Triple band GSM 900/1800/1900
<< EU Galaxy S2 band Network support>>
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
AT&T and International (I9100) GSIIs support the same bands, which is why I9100s work perfectly in the US. Your device is completely missing support for the 850 MHz band (first device I've seen in years that wasn't quadband GSM other than dumbphones) and also missing support for 3G in the 1800 MHz band.
So you will not have 3G coverage anywhere, and you will completely lose coverage where AT&T uses the 850 MHz band.

[Q] Only getting Edge Network

Hey Everyone,
I just picked up an unlocked/unbranded GTI-9100 and am only picking up the Edge network for T-Mobile USA. Is there a certain Modem or Kernel I need? The 9100 is on 2.3.3, so I guess I should root it and flash upgraded ROM/Kernel package? I am fimilar with ODIN as I have a Vibrant and a T-Mobile GS2.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I think you should double check your network settings and APNs

With the GT-I9100, you'll ONLY ever get Edge on T-Mobile USA. Doesn't matter what you flash. The phone simply doesn't have the hardware to receive 1700mhz UMTS, which is one of two necessary bands (the other being 2100mhz UMTS) for 3g/4g on T-Mobile USA's network.
The GT-I9100 will only ever get HSPA/HSPA+ on AT&T's network in the US. I'm sure of this - I have an I9100, and am on AT&T.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Nope. Not short of getting an AT&T account just for that phone, anyway.
...
(sorry, here comes some snark)
Unless you're comfortable cracking open the phone, ripping out the antenna, replacing it with one that will receive 1700/2100 mhz UMTS, decompiling the OS, tweaking it to recognize the new frequencies, and recompiling.

You can either get a USB jig or flash a stock kernel back. Try a search. This has been asked a CRAPTON of times.

Just found this forum... have the exact same issue. I have the GT-I9100 Intl version from Australia and now in the USA for a couple of weeks using T Mobile.
The dude behind the counter asked if my phone was unlocked, which it is. I told him that it supports Quad Band UMTS 850, 900, 1800 and 2100mhz and he said I'd get full HSPA+ reception on the 2100mhz band...
Sure enough, it's only Edge. I THINK there might be a setting in the Device Config (on keypad * # * # 197328640 # * # *) and possibly change something to use the US 2100mhz or something like that...
I can live with using Edge, but just interesting whether it's just a config setting that needs to be changed in the handset itself to pickup a different connection type for US 2100mhz bands?

I9100 only gets Edge on T-mobile USA because it doesn't receive 1700 WCDMA. If you want 3g/"4g" you'll have to go to ATT or another carrier that uses the same frequencies...
T-mobile USA uses AWS for high speed mobile internet, which REQUIRES BOTH 1700 & 2100mhz WCDMA. One is used for uplink, the other for downlink. Only receiving one of them won't work, which is why you're only getting Edge.
Dude behind the counter is wrong and doesn't seem to know how AWS works.
EDIT: BTW, UMTS and WCDMA are somewhat interchangeable in this instance.

noob help: unlocked tmobile phone; no data on ATT

hi - i have an unlocked galaxy s2 (tmobile branded) that i'm trying to make work on att. the phone works to receive and make calls/texts, but doesn't do anything data related unless i'm on a wifi signal (apps, mms, internet, etc). my questions are:
1. someone told me this can be resolved by updating the APN settings, but I cant figure out how to do that. Is that something ATT will help me with? Or is there a simple way for a novice user to do it?
2. is my data going to completely stink? I read on another thread that this might only give me access to EDGE/2G (though I'm not sure why). Is there any way for me to have a good data speed on an unlocked phone?
Thanks in advance - sorry for the silly questions!
Why two threads ? You opened a thread about the same thing all of 15 minutes ago. Easy enough to continue to use that thread for further questions/edit your OP & title if need be.

When I made the OP and hit submit, the captcha failed, I got an error message, and couldn't find the thread when I searched for it. So....because I didn't know the first one had actually posted.
TMobile phone with data should work on ATT.
Reason: 1. These are the 3G frequency bands for S2 .. 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 (TMobile) and 850 / 1900 / 2100 (ATT). Hence ATT frequency band is safe.
2. These are the 2G frequency bands for S2 .. 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 (ATT & TMobile). No problem there.
Solution:
1. someone told me this can be resolved by updating the APN settings, but I cant figure out how to do that. Is that something ATT will help me with? Or is there a simple way for a novice user to do it?
Yes that could help. It is not that hard either. Try to change your apn settings according to the screenshots:
http://img.tapatalk.com/4a486a99-ba70-c7e0.jpg
http://img.tapatalk.com/4a486a99-ba79-67c0.jpg
if this fails to give you connectivity. Try this :
on your phone dialer: *#*#197328640#*#*
select [1] DEBUG SCREEN
select [8] PHONE CONTROL
select [7] NETWORK CONTROL
select [2] BAND SELECTION
select [2] WCDMA Band Preference
select [1] WCDM 850
press Menu Button
select END
2. is my data going to completely stink? I read on another thread that this might only give me access to EDGE/2G (though I'm not sure why). Is there any way for me to have a good data speed on an unlocked phone?
ATT networks are on a slower 14.4 Mbps network for 3G while TMobile is on 21 Mbps network. So, your data will be slower. How much slower it would depend on my factors like location, surroundings etc. But, as I said above ATT 3G frequency band is covered on the TMobile version T989. So, you should have access to 3G. If you have an ATT version I777 and if you want to try using it on TMobile then you can only access EDGE/2G as TMobile uses 1700 MHz for their 3G connections. (Which is not available on the ATT version I777).
thanks, satish.
i'm not sure i'm following your answer on question 2. how can i tell what ATT version i am on? or is it safe to assume that if i am on ATT 3G i am on tmobile t989?
if it helps, i'm in philadelphia area, pa, us
i'm not sure i'm following your answer on question 2. how can i tell what ATT version i am on? or is it safe to assume that if i am on ATT 3G i am on tmobile t989?
I777 and T989 are model numbers. You can find the model numbers on your device ... go to Settings > About Phone > Model Number.

There is a different forum on XDA for T989. If you had posted there you would have got more replies. You are asking in the wrong forum. This is meant for I9100 (European Model/International Version).
This the correct forum for your question : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1329

[Q] Help: i717 LTE Universal (without any AT&T App)

Hi All. Just got my hands on AT&T Galaxy Note LTE i717. So far, its Unlocked and rooted through Odin. Going to to CWM 10 soon. Projecting a ParanoidKANGdroid 2.3.3 rom too (or any other rom).
But my main concern would be, with my locality in mind (i'm in singapore):
1) Would I be able to clear all AT&T apps? Meaning is it a must for me to have at&t apps inside to keep the phone working?
2) Would the phone work in singapore after flashing? Currently, it is working fine unflashed and in AT&T stock.
3) would my LTE function work? (It does not have a mini sim card slot but a normal slot)
I've searched through but I might have missed some useful links. Apologies if I do. Do guide me to the right path if possible.
Thank you.
If you're going to CM, why are you even asking about AT&T apps?
As for working in Singapore, you'll have to compare frequencies between your carrier and AT&T's. And the i717 doesn't have a microsim.
You should be fine!
If you install a custom rom it won't have at&t bloat, or apps. You can download them if needed.
Take notice of what modem you're on now. It's in settings - about phone - baseband version. If it's working fine make a note of it. Installing custom roms shouldn't change your modem. I'd find a downloadable zip of it for peace of mind. Updating thru kies can change the modem. So if something goes wrong you can revert back to stock and still have the modem you desire.
Thanks lots guys! appreciate much!

There's a galaxy note released for the Singapore market. It's called the n7005.
Novena is a Rom based on that firmware btw...and since its Singapore Rom, no AT&T apps.
As far as running an aosp Rom, no AT&T apps are needed, and as long as you copy down your apn data before flashing just to be safe, there's no reason you shouldn't get lte,
Singapore uses the same lte bands that American carriers use.

I don't mean to contradict you sir, but are you sure about the LTE? according to this list of LTE networks AT&T uses 4 and 17 and Singapore uses 3 and 7.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
Those numbers are bands and frequencies just for the LTE network but the frequencies are the same 900 and 1900 mhz for the 4G network. So, like a lot of at&t users, 4G is the more common network in Singapore.
Gotcha, the post said lte so I figured that's what we were focusing on, not 4g.my bad!
