[Q] Google Calendar Sync - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does setting the sync interval for Google Calendar Sync to something short, like 5 minutes, have a negative effect on a phones battery life?

Yes, when you are not using your phone, it goes into sort of a sleep state, and to constantly be pulling data, and waking it from that sleep state can have a very large impact on the battery,
THanks button appreciated!

Anyway to get the Calendar Sync to "Push" the updates? Would that even help?
BTW I'm using it to sync with Outlook (which I have to use at work).

As far as I know the only push available is for gmail accounts, so, your phone essentially has to pull for updates, the more often you do this, the more battery you use. I pull once every 30 minutes during the day, and once every 2 hour at night. And if you expect an email you can always pull itself
Thanks Button Always Appreciated!

Will my phone only sync via the Google Calendar Sync application, when the computer that has the application installed is running? Or is there some hidden setting on the phone that will make the phone attempt a sync even when Google Calendar Sync is not running?

The information I believe is stored on a server, not on your phone, your computer, syncs to the server, and your phone syncs to the server, so whether your phone is on or not your computer will always sync, and whether your computer is on or not, your phone will always sync.

How often do the Google services sync?

I've go a Hero and it's setup to sync my Calendar, Contacts and Mail. Unlike the iPhone, I haven't been able to find a setting for how often this sync happens?
Anyone know if there's a way to setup Push vs 15mins vs blah blah, or just how often it does it?
Thanks,
Stephen
nope, no settings.
it just does it when it needs to.
it's pseudo push....it seems to ping every so often in the background and only do a full sync when some changes have been made at one end or the other.
seems pretty quick on mine, i generally get emails within the minute. Plenty fast enough for anyone (lets face it, no-one needs their emails within 5 seconds, they just like to get arsey about it!)
Sure, I was just wondering whether (like on an iPhone) you could lengthen your battery life by setting the interval up a bit.
nope. you can turn it off, but that's it.
there are various apps in the market that can turn it on and off at various times, and may be able to simulate something like that by turning it on and off regularly....

pls tell the names of those apps
try searching the market for 'sync' maybe?
Alternatively, check the older threads here for something like 'turn sync off at night'.
I cant remeber the name of the thread exactly, but there is one discussing this, and an app was found.
App "Locale" with Sync plugin (separate install) are great for turning sync on and off according to conditions like time, location, battery-level, etc.

Awesome. I knew someone here would know.
You can also set up the regular "mail" client (vs gmail) to pull in your data. This has a setting for how often it syncs.
yeah but that's only for mail, not for contacts and calendar as well.
But very good point for those who are only interested in email....

Question: auto sync

Hello, I've got a little question in order to improve my battery life.
If I set auto sync off, will help me with battery? For example, gmail is every time working when auto sync is on? Or contacts, are every time being sync?
And when I'm not on WiFi (when I haven't got ibterbet). Is trying to sync too?
Maybe is better to set tasker for making a sync every x hours, 8 for example, is it? What can you tell me about? Thanks!

Turning OFF auto-sync will surely save your battery as your applications won't try to connect to the internet when Wifi/GPRS is not available. You'll see a good increase in battery life. As it is always easy to turn ON auto sync through the power widget or notification bar, you won't find it difficult turning it ON when you need it.
Ok so I can use tasker, for sync every 8 hours for example. So can you confirm If does exist any way for setting push notifications for gmail?
Thanks

[Q] Push email or gmail sync?

What'll drain more battery, the Samsung e-mail app on push 24/7 (with a single Gmail account), or the Gmail app with sync?
only one way to really find out since every ones phone behaves differently, try each one over two or three days.see how each one goes.
If you use the email app and set sync to just a few hours instead of a few minutes you may find that it uses less juice than gmail (you can also set gmail to sync less often)
If you choose to use one rather than the other don't forget to freeze the other app as they are system apps and will continue to run in background even if they are unconfigured

How do you change gmail to sync less often?
Thanks
The drain is not that bad, I always have mine on normal sync and drain is expected but not as bad it it seems using Gmail app.
I use Exchange on the Samsung App and that drains battery as there's a bug in the source code but not sure how that affects POP3/Imap.
It's a smartphone at the end of the day just enjoy it and charge nightly
Email App Error
Hi,
I am facing an error with my email app. Since i upgraed t GB 2.3.6 the app wont mark messages as read as soon as it is read. If i open the gmail app and mark a mail as read, then after a few minutes the email app also marks it as read, else stays as unread. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

Specify interval for Google Auto-sync?

Perhaps I am missing something obvious but is there a way to specify the interval in which Active-sync updates? I am pretty sure this is a push service but it would be great to be able to have Active-sync only update once every X hours.
i dont think you can do this, outside of turning off your data and turning it back on periodically for the phone to re-sync/update.

Thank you for the reply. I wish we could set an interval. I am having some wake locks issues with Event Log Manager (Google Services). Turning off Active-sync solved the issue but now I am not getting calendar updates, etc. Perhaps I can use Tasker to set a schedule when I turn on and off Active-sync?
The exchange activesync let you chose sync schedules. But the GMail sync doesn't. I wish there is such option not for sync every x hours (which does not necessary save battery) but to turn off sync at night.

I am curious why you think having Activesync work on schedule wouldnt necessarily save battery? In my case, Active-sync is causing quite a bit of wake lock which drains the battery. I imagine putting this task on a schedule instead of having an "always on" connection should save battery, unless of course the app needed to schedule this consumes more battery or if the very act of starting up Active-sync consumes more battery....oh man this isnt as clear cut to me as I originally thought!
In terms of you want to do, you could use a profile scheduler program to turn off Active-sync at night. I use and app called "Profile Scheduler".
push sync actually works pretty efficiently. More so than polling for emails every so often. I have 4 accounts (one GMail, one corp. exchange and 2 hotmail accounts) all use push sync for emails, contacts and calendars. It uses no more than 2% battery per hour.
Unless you stretch out the schedule to once or twice a day, you won't see much battery improvements.
All I wanted is silent the phone automatically during my sleep at night And so far Gmail is the only one that won't let me do it

I'm guessing they get tons of email or something. If you really get so much email that both push and pull styles are killing battery then perhaps you should turn any form of sync off. It's not the phone's fault though, that's just how the cookie crumbles!

Exchange keeping phone awake

I have one exchange account set to sync calendar and email. The Exchange process itself only uses around 7% of battery according to the battery graph. The 'awake' line under the graph has some solid areas accompanied by a corresponding steep drop on the battery curve.
Using GSam battery monitor to show which app had the most Time held awake shows Exchange over 5hrs.
I tried changing from Push email to every 10 minutes but it hasn't helped.
I also tried deleting the account, clearing cache and data from the exchange app and recreating the account.
Has anyone solved this issue?
I have not solved it but have the same problem. Galaxy S3. I need Exchange Sync, it finally got me to stop missing BlackBerry
Charging twice a day still stinks. Do other Android phones have this constant awake issue when running Exchange? Is the issue specific to ICS?
Hi, never experienced this on my S3, but did on my S1. A few things to try:
- Push can actually be more battery friendly
- Disable Calendar sync, if that cures it, try deleting all recurring appointments, starting with the oldest ones. Bad recurring appointments are known to send the sync process in a loop.
- Wrong login credentials keep the phone awake, even when sync is set to never!
I use Enhanced Email, in which security can be overided ( no server forcing a lock on the phone). I have read that security policies from the ecchange server can cause problems too.

Yep same problem here too, anyone?
I'll try turning off calendar sync. I turned off push but that made no difference, as you suspected. I use touchdown for email, task, and calendar and also use device exchange sync for calendar (the latter so Calendar Snooze will work with appointments). I can probably get by syncing calendar manually but not using is not an option since calendar is more important than calls and email for me.
Will report back with findings.

Hi techphets
Just wondering if you managed to fix this issue??
Ive also spent hours and hours trolling around trying to find a fix for this, but with no success any thoughts?? I have the galaxy s2 (not rooted, ics 4.0.3) so its definitely not just your S3, its more widespread. ICS? or the email app??
Cheers
i never use any stock apps especially when it connects to the networks and syncs so i just uninstall it to make sure that it doesn't consume battery life
Thanks. However when I log in to outlook online on my phone, the emails that appear are months old so it doesn't sync online. The only way to see new emails it to use the app (so I've found so far anyway)
