Stuck at "failed to boot" OTA update - Motorola Photon 4G

Soooo ....I tried to install the update from OTA and my phone is now stuck in a failed to boot mode /starting rsd services screen......anyone help me out real quick? This is my first MOTO since the star tac , ive been strictly htc since the mogul....im rooted other than that ive done nothing else to the phone.....

If it is "Starting RSD Services" then your phone is not bricked. Assuming you can't make it boot any other way, you can load up RSD Lite on your pc, connect the phone via usb, and flash the latest SBF which will completely reload your OS. Granted you are going to need the correct drivers to do this.
Now, I'm wondering if you've done anything to this phone prior to applying the OTA update or was the phone completely stock? If it was stock and you did not unlock the bootloader then I'd just return it to Sprint and let them take responsibility for it. Otherwise you can do the repair yourself but only at your own risk...
I've posted the basics below but feel free to click here to go to the actual thread which explains this. I recommend you make sure your phone is charged before doing this.:
RSD Lite and 32 Bit Drivers (Install the 32bit drivers if you are running a 32bit Windows OS)
64 Bit Drivers (use these instead are running a 64 bit version of Windows.)
Latest SBF
1. DL and install RSDLite and Driver package from link above
2. Power down your phone
3. On your phone hold vol up and power till you see RSD at the top of the screen
4. Launch RSDLite from your program menu on your pc/laptop
5. Press the “. . .” button next to the box labeled “Filename”
6. Load up the SBF file you extracted from the MR download
7. Plug your device into your computer RSDLite should recognize your phone right away if you installed the drivers from this link i provided
8. Press the “Start” button
9. Be patient...takes a while...will reboot a couple times so grab a beverage of choice...use the restroom...take out the dogs...whatever...
10. may require activation again...mine did so be sure you have a means in which to do so...web...phone to call sprint for programming...OTA...
11. Enjoy and hit thanks!!!
Don't thank me, thank Yay 4 Juggs, I took this from his thread. If you have further issues you should post them there.

yeahried to flash the newest update, but now all it says is failed to boot 2 at the top of the moto screen...... Idk what now...???

make sure you have insurance

why would i need insurance? this phone is less than a month old, and the thing dumped on me while flashing Sprints OTA system update.....pretty sure it is thier fault.......lol......

The sbf update failed? Pull the battery for a few minutes then put it back and press and hold volume down while holding the power button. Does it say fastboot?
Also, you are within your return period so they will probably take it back unless you unlocked the bootloader. I don't think they'll take it back if it says unlocked at the top when you boot it, if it doesnt say that it should be fine because Sprint is okay with rooting. I wouldn't tell them you attempted the SBF though, just that the OTA update borked your phone.

ok I got it thanks everyone.......rsd failed to flash because my battery was lower than 50% .......i charged it and it flashed the first time with no problems......i dont understand why you have to re register your phone after the rsd flash though.....Motorola Android phones are wierd

I'm glad to hear your phone survived. Yeah you definitely want to make sure your phone is charged whenever you do any sort of modifications to the system/bootloader/recovery partitions. As for the reactivation, its not bad once you learn your MSL number you can do it yourself without needing to call Sprint. I'm thankful your phone didn't brick. lol

My phone also was recovered after doing as outlined by Yayy . Don't go into RSD with a low battery or you WILL pay the consequences.

I tried doing this and my battery died... Now I'm not sure where to go from here. I either charge it from the computer and ONLY the green led lights up and then like 10 minutes later the phone automatically comes on and says failed to boot 2, starting rsd, battery too low to flash. Or I can plug it into my wall and the phone automatically comes on and says the same thing immediately. Which way should I do this?

You may want to look on ebay for a Motorola Photon 4G / Droid 3 Battery Charger for a few bucks/no shipping cost. Order the charger, rush shipping if you feel you need to, open the package, take the battery out of your phone, plug the battery in the wall with the charger, and wait until the light changes from red to blue/green and continue from there.

I thought if it was semi-bricked you could still charge it?

Vibrant COMPLETLY BRICKED!

I tried to fix the hardware issues because i was not able to get into the recovery mode buy using the 3 button combos. Anyways, I BRICKED IT!!! It wont turn on or able to get to download mode anymore.
Is there a way to get it to turn on again or should i just trash it and should never touch a smart phone again?
Please help!
So, with battery in you plug in the charger like you're going to charge your phone, and you get nothing?

yes, nothing at all.....the phone is completly cold!
I assume you have tried pulling the sim and sd cards out, pull the battery out, connect usb to pc and phone and pop the battery in as you hold the +- vol buttons? Check the usb cable, try anothrone if you have, check the terminals on the phone usb port. If all ok then you might want to try a jig....
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
I have tried all of the above. But what is the jig?
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA Premium App
Jig is basically a jumper thru your phones usb port that forces the phone to download mode, or jump start it. Search the forum, they are cheaper here than ebay.

Well my phone had hardware lock, which i was not able to use 3 button combos to get to recovery mode....so i found this thread.....
I just captured the JI6 OTA update files from one of my phones and found that T-mobile is
updating the SBL with the same file found in this thread, I'm using the same method as T-mobile
to install the new SBL so the chances for a brick are the same but if you are completely
stock just wait for the OTA update and have the phone swapped under warranty in the
event of a brick.
WARNING:
INSTALLING THIS CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE
this is safer than the odin method, but when messing with the phones bootloader
there is always a chance that you could end up with a paper weight (I bricked
one phone messing with this stuff).

this is the fix for hardware locked phones in update.zip form
install the phone drivers which can be found at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
put update.zip on the internal sd card (the 12 gb one)
turn on USB debugging in Settings-->Applications-->Development
reboot into recovery, use the RebootRecovery.bat in adb.zip if you dont know
how to do that.
when in recovery use the vol up and down buttons to navigate and power button to
select reinstall packages
install will take about 20-30 seconds and will pause at "writing secondary bootlader" don't panic
the phone will reboot you should be unlocked (or bricked).

Have you gotten your jig yet? Did it work?
Don't mean to sound negative, but I'm pretty sure a jig won't work. From what you posted it seems that the update.zip you posted broke your bootloader which is a guaranteed hard brick if true. You should still try if you want to, but if your bootloader really got messed up nothing will bring it back

waiiiit doesent odin 1.8.3 has bootloader flash option....wait ...., it does .,
and i think it is incredibly hard to hardbrick phone flashing things through CWM anyway ,ether you are very talented or u have bad luck.
LEAVE YOUR PHONE FOR 10 MIN CONNECTED TO WALL OUTLET , take out battery dont disconect the phone put the batt in leave it for 10 min take it out put it back in try to boot your phone, TRY TO JUMP START IT ,ANYWAY YOU LIKE IT (or gimme your phone)
people return countless phones because someone said its fup because wont turn on been there few times ,still got my phone i dont care how much c*** u gone tell me it wont work i still tell you it will only way i would consider phone usless its when internal sd would get messed up to the point that it wouldnt work at all because u cant reflash sd to work
jig ? what jig, my phone would not turn on for a day to boot back up after messing with it for some time trying to jump start it.

I'm in the same boat. A jig won't fix it because it's the boot loader. The only way to fix it is through a jtag. I took mine to a local repair shop that had one and got it to boot up, but it was still hardware locked because he had to use a i9000 boot loader. The T959 boot loaders weren't working for him. I tried updating through Kies a couple days later and it screwed up the boot loader again, so I'm sending it to Samsung. As long as they don't determine that it was modified or repaired already, they'll repair it under warranty. I just wish I can find out how much the repair would cost if they determine that the warranty is void.

[Q] Yet another soft brick...damn

Heeeeere we go.
long story short I messed up, here are the symptoms(spent 2 hours scouring the internet and XDA BTW)
SVF:108:1:2
Failed To Boot 3
Entering NvFlash Recovery Mode
thats after trying to enter recovery (vol-/pwr), alternatively I recieve a "Starting RSD mode" if I try to boot normally or try to plug phone in to charge.
Also, just tried (vol+/vol-/Pwr) received "Starting Fastboot Protocol support"
battery too low to flash...this presents a problem as I am unable to plug the phone in without it coming on....
All tutorials Ive found involve failed to flash 0x1000 or something of that nature, I am not receiving that message.
It never progresses past that. If anyone could point me in the direction of a good tutorial or even the thread that Im apparently missing it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Unfortunately the process as I described it above is how it happens. I dont get to choose which "mode" it goes to. It just depends on the action/button combination. It never progresses past that.

Well i think you need to flash sbf file in rsd mode. The sbf should be on the version you had originally or higher (if you were on 2.3.4 so don't flash 2.2.2 otherwise you'll hard brick). I might be wrong so someone else should confirm me before you proceed with it.
Not to sound like a broken record...but I'm not sure that that's possible. I don't have the option to choose. Unless you ate suggesting that from the available options I listed above I make an attempt.

You say in this post that when you boot normally the phone says "Starting RSD Mode". Im talking about using this mode to flash sbf…you can search the forums on how to flash sbf in RSD mode.
Also you'll need to charge your battery some way(battery can't charge without going into OS) before you flash.

if you can get to working fastboot support you can probably recover.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501532
follow Alaq/ Uncle Cemka's method of flashing pudding via fast boot, I have recovered more than one phone this way, your going to need a way to charge your battery though, might have to buy an external battery charger, build a powered usb cable or cutup a cable and apply the + and - straight to your battery....you can search and find ways to charge your battery.
Also a little more info than just "Fail" would be helpful, did the RSD flash fail, is the phone just boot looping and going straight to RSD support or fastboot support? Error messages? it may not seem relevant but many of us have seen similar error messages and know different ways to get back to a working phone but we need more information from you to be able to help.
Also I have seen phones with the SVF:105.1:2 failed to boot error actually be accessible by RSD even when the screen did not mention RSD support was up...
You might need to strip the end of a USB cable and charge the battery directly. Another user posted instructions somewhere. I'm sure a quick google will reveal all.

How to update to ICS for Galaxy S2 for AT&T (i777)

Update is being pushed out slowly, but I figured out a way to forcibly do it in kies.
It simple. Do not plug in your phone while you are doing this.
First, make sure you update to the new version of kies. Then go to the menu bar> tools, then firmware upgrade and initialization.
Click until you get to the screen that asks you to input your S/N and Model name of your phone. Enter in these details. It's behind the battery.
Once you do this, a screen will pop up asking if you are sure you want to upgrade to CSC:LE5. AKA ice cream sandwich.
At this point, plug in your phone and it'll go through.
Your welcome.
EDIT: as of today, Monday June 25th 2012, at 11:00 AM, the update is officially available through KIES. If you don't see it now, a popup telling you to upgrade will appear by tomorrow.
EDIT 2: DO NOT UPDATE TO ICS. IT SUCKS. AND IT IS NOT NEARLY AS SMOOTH AS GINGERBREAD. If you hate android lag, the update will almost certianly piss you off. If you have questions about how its different, just ask. I already downgraded to gingerbread again. ICS = Not missed.
EDIT 3: (copy pasta from a post I made)

No. I assumed that the update through kies updated the bootloaders, so I found a stock 2.3.4 one click odin executable W/ Bootloaders in the development section and flashed that. Make sure you factory reset and clear cache in 3e recovery before you do so. New bootloaders can't take advantage of the Jig. I also didn't want to find out what flashing gingerbread on ICS bootloaders would do my phone.
I find 2.3.6 has battery issues, and I find 2.3.4 to be THE most stable release.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20229527&postcount=46
The file you want from this page is the I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries, and you want the odin3 one click download. It's one of the ones with the warning text in red.
To restore your phone to stock 2.3.4 once on ICS do the following:
1) Boot into 3e recovery (power + volume down + volume up)
-Wipe Cache
-Factory Restore
2) Pull battery
-boot into download mode (volume down + volume up, then connect phone to computer while buttons are simultaneously pressed)
3) Open the one click executable. Make sure it recognizes the phone
-It will say [COM8] or something. Just make sure its green.
4) Flash it. It will work. after you boot up into gingerbread, If the system freezes after the At&t logo just go back into 3e recovery and wipe cache + factory reset again. It will work. Trust me.
Note: ODIN is a very tricky piece of software. When you click flash, it will probably not work and say "failed" or something along those lines. Try it again. It will work. It took me almost 20 tries to get the flash to go through. Also try flashing it as soon as you plug in your phone (not even 2 seconds after it is recognized). That seems to work. Don't be worried if it never seems to go through.
Note: YOU ARE FLASHING BOOTLOADERS. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL. If ODIN DOES NOT WORK OR YOUR COMPUTER SHUTS OFF HALFWAY THOUGH, OR ODIN QUITS, NEVER PULL THE BATTERY FROM YOUR PHONE. As long as you see a downloading sign on your phone, your phone is ALWAYS recoverable. Just open up the odin executable again, make sure your phone is recognized, and restart the process. If odin freezes halfway through the process, always restart odin, NEVER touch your phone. Your phone can always be written to while in the download state. This is how 99% of all bricking happens, because people always feel the need to turn off their phone in the middle of the process.

Nice trick by the way op
Thanks for the trick. One question - how long did it take for you (or for anyone else who decided to use this method)? It's been stuck at the 90% value for about 2 hours for me, and I'm beginning to get a little worried, since these things don't normally take so long (according to friends I've asked, anyhoo). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about 90% fnished downloading/extracting? or 90% putting it on the phone (with the green bar going across the phone)?
If it hasn't started putting it on the phone yet you should be fine to unplug it and start over. If you remove cable while it's actually putting in on the phone, you will have problems. not sure which kind though. maybe just a soft brick. you should be able to get back to download mode though.

I apologize for not being specific - 90% putting it on the phone, I presume, since that green bar you mentioned is there (with the "Downloading..." underscored with a "Do not turn off target !!").

Let us know if it works out. I'm crossing my fingers for you.

No, I don't...I'll be sure to purchase one as soon as possible.
As for the phone, I shut down my computer and unplugged it - received a "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen. At the moment, I'm looking around for a fix. This seems to be a soft brick, though, so I'm optimistic. If there is anything you could suggest for me, it'd be greatly appreciated.

see if this works: hold down both volume keys at the same time. then, while holding them, plug in your usb cable. hold the keys until you see a screen with green text. you will then hit the vol up key o get to download mode. then you could start the whole process over again through KIES.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but when I enter the imei into the s/n blank it tells me it's not a valid serial number. I've tried entering the actual s/n and I get a weird message in what looks like Chinese. Any other suggestions?

Yeah, the IMEI won't work anyway.
That weird message was coming up the day that Samsung said their servers would be down (yesterday). They may have figured out that people were getting the "recovery" firmware that way and disabled it. Who knows.
So any word if that method will work now?

I tried this method but now my phone only shows the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue error." I tried doing the recovery process on kies and tried to install the firmware again but to no avail. Does anyone have an idea how to work around this?

You could try the one-click downloader in the Download Repository. The link is there, but the file is still uploading to dropbox. You'll get a 404 error until the upload is complete. Dropbox is really slow uploading things. Link to the Download Repository is in my signature.
Kies is crap
I've been trying and trying to download from Kies but when I plug in my phone it says I'm up to date and when I try to do the manual update it tells me my serial number is wrong and to try again...any suggestions?

Bad flash - Dead battery fix?

I attempted to flash ICS onto my Razr Maxx, but the battery ended up dying. The only way to get the phone into a boot menu is to have a wall charger plugged in. I've done this, and selected "BP Tools," but it just stays on the Motorola icon for hours, never charging the phone. I also tried the "flash" option, and got the same result.
I can still enter into "recovery," and have tried throwing several different operating systems on the SD card. Every time I "update from .zip," the installation fails.
What can I do to charge the battery at this point? I don't have a factory cable, and don't understand why the BP Tools trick isn't working.
Try to boot normally while you are plugged in wall charger..!
And then charge it and flash it with RSD LITE with proper fastboot file I mean
check it properly that what region and gsm or cdma file is it, if u dont flash it properly it will show you validation error...
SLICED BY MY RAZR..

As soon as I plug the phone in, it goes to the Motorola logo. When I enter fast boot mode, it says battery low. When I try to charge using BP Tools, it just stays on the Moto logo, never actually charging. It appears that I have no OS.
Since I can enter recovery, is there any zip file I can put on my sd card to load up an OS onto the phone?

I too am having the same problem. I am very inexperienced with the whole programming process, so a detailed step-by-step answer would be helpful. I just wanted some Ice Cream
Guys have you tried reset factory or wipe cache in recovery...?
If its not working man then you need a MOTOROLA FACTORY CABLE..
its very easy to make, I made one for myself and thts how I recovered my razr from this problem...
Best of guys..
sent through DFL AND FEDEX..
How do you make the cable? I've wiped cache and factory reset. That's not going to do anything since there's no OS.

None of the charging hacks are working, and the only reasonable fix seems to be getting an OS on the phone.

I got mine fixed* I took it to Verizon and played dumb. They replaced it free with a new RAZR. They said that it could have happened when the OTA update took place. Worth a shot Moose. Just play dumb :-D
Didn't work for me. I'd just like to know why the hacks aren't working.

I learned that sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I had a similar issue over the past few days. Ended up pulling the back cover off and just charging straight to the terminals, and it really was very simple.
bought the cable on ebay delivered for ten bucks. took a week to get here from China and then an evening to use Matt's droidrazr 1.7 option 1 to ready the phone to charge and flash. Spent days looking for a file to flash from the card and other alternatives.
Order the cable.:good:

Some help with a bad flash

Hi there all...
I jus finished flashing my Atrix 4g that was AT&T, was a bit of a pain realy used to the HTC lol.
well any way my friend dicided that he would do the same thing and unlock his that he just bought
along with the lapdock :S thinks he is a falsh git......
today he came over to my place threw the phone and lapdock on my bed an said iff i can fix it i can have it
asked what was wrong told me he had a power outage during the boot loader unlock.
Okay on to the problem i have with this phone now.....
firstly. when i plug the thing in to charge it turns on an goes stight into boot loader RSD option then
tells me that there is no enough batt life to flash the phone.
i carnt get this phone to charge so that i can start to try an recover this thing.. seems like he got a partial flash
done as the OS has been wiped when you turn it on (or plug in power) it always says failed to load...

You can make a "motorola factory cable" it lets you use the phone with or without the battery. Search it up in google and follow the instructions to make one... I made one & used it a couple of times...

Okay thanx the cable worked as intened just what i needed.
okay having flash problems with this phone now :S not sure what to do the phone powers on with
SVF:105:1:2
Failed to boot 0X1000
no OS detected going in to RSD mode
this is fine i ca select the boot mode whith the loader but when i load the RSD lite flashing
program i load the 4547-fix-try2.sbf file i downloaded from a thred on teh forums.
i start the flash then it gets to part where is needs bypass mode it will not auto select the
bypass mode it needs, so i select it for the divice then after the BP mode it needs to returen to RSD
Mode however the divice does not reset this time so that i cannot reset the phone RSD mode and
thus the phone flashing fails......
is there any one that can offer me some advice on this as i carnt think or find a way arround this...
