[Q] Can i Root, S-OFF, CWM Recovery from stock, without wiping? - HTC EVO 3D

I've just received my HTC EVO 3D GSM, and i want to root it, S-OFF, CWMR and that..
I've had a HTC Desire before, rooted and CWMR but not S-OFF, and i was running CyanogenMod 7 on it.
I've decided (so far) to keep my EVO 3D running stock ROM.
But i do want root, to be able to do nandroid backups, titantium backup, underclock/overclock it, etc etc.
Can i simply use Revoluntionary to S-OFF and install CWMR, and then flash "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip" to achieve root (aka SU) ?
And then i'll have root, without wiping or resetting anything on my phone?
I'm semi new to this, and i really don't want anything to go wrong

On my CDMA Evo, I skipped the backups and stuff and it never wiped or asked me to wipe. I still ended up with S-OFF, twrp, root, etc. without having to wipe.

I'm the exact same as you, just came from a HTC Desire with CM7 to an EVO 3D.
Id really like to know what the best process is, from what i can tell the HTC method isn't the one to us.
The other thing I'd like to know is exactly what is the problem with phone that have been updated to 2.3.4, people have said not to update if you want to root??

Check the gsm dev section...gsm doesnt have much to play with right now but im sure it will soon

Hey, a little update and maybe some help to others in the same situation as mine.
I've now successfully rooted & S-OFF'd my HTC EVO 3D GSM, though still using stock ROM.
I followed this lovely guide, which was very nice, and worked like a treat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smp6cT4UEKE&feature=related
The only thing i did different was that i used another SU.zip file, since from reading on these forums, the one he linked (in the video) had some errors, so i used the file others recommended.
Recommended SU.zip file:

The HTC Method isn't optimal, since it will not S-OFF your phone, and there are far better ways to unlock your phone properly.
My EVO came preinstalled with 2.3.4, so i'm fairly sure the android version doesn't change anything.
There are different hboot versions floating around, and mine came with 1.49.0007, which can easily be rooted & S-OFF'd with the proper tools (as i linked in my last post).
The 1.49.0008 version is not working properly at the moment i believe (correct me if i'm wrong?)
And if you update your phone to the newest version, you'll get hboot version 1.50, which is not rootable yet (not stable atleast, think i saw some experimental roots at some point?)
And as for more info, i did not loose any data or apps or anything when rooting & S-OFF, so it worked perfectly

Hey thanks for the help, thought I'd just put everything i have down for anyone else. This will S-OFF and Permanent Root an EVO 3D.
Model: HTC EVO 3D GSM (shooter_U)
Android: Gingerbread 2.3.4
Hboot: 1.49.0007
1. Enable USB Debugging on your Phone.
2. Connect Phone to Computers USB.
3. Download "revolutionary-0.4pre4" from http://revolutionary.io/
4. Get Beta Key from http://revolutionary.io/
5. Download & Install "HTCDriver3.0.0.007" from http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
6. Run "revolutionary.exe" from "revolutionary-0.4pre4"
7. Phone should reboot 4 times
8. Type Yes to install Clockwork Recovery Mod.
9. Download "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16651725&postcount=17
10. Copy "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned" zip file to the root of your SD Card
11. Boot into Recovery by Powering off the Phone, then powering thge phone on by holding the "Power Button and Volume Down Button"
12. Press the Volume Down button to select "Recovery" and press "Power Button" to Select. Then Choose "Install ZIP from SD", and install "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned".
13. Done (now check you have SuperUser App, maybe go get Titanium Backup & ROM Manager).
Thanks to Moonbloom, Revolutionary and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smp6cT4UEKE for help.

No problem mate, glad i can help
From what i've seen (personally, on my own phone) and heard on these forums, ROMManager doesn't work properly with HTC EVO 3D GSM.
When i installed the free version of ROMManager, it didn't recognize that i had ClockWorkMod Recovery, but when i rebooted into recovery, it clearly showed that i had CWMR installed.
A lot of people have had this issue, and when you go into ROMManager, it will ask you to flash CWMR to the latest version. If you do this after having used Revolutionary (including the entire process) it will completely **** up your S-OFF, root, CWMR and everything, so don't try and flash CWMR from within ROMManager.
All the things you can do in ROMManager are also doable if you reboot your phone into recovery (just without the fancy ROMManager GUI)

s-off flyer wont OTA Update? or lost root after RUU? (non-tech solution)

OK, if you have performed the revolutionary s-off like me, your OTA updates wont Update!
Have no fear (or better you should... )
A way forward is here....
Use EsFileExplorer Manager to back up all your apps.
Use HTC Sync to Backup as much data as you see fit....
I have to say this is relatively easy for noobs but involves a fair bit of work as it returns your device to a factory format (some would say a benefit as all crud is removed!)
First choose the correct RUU update from the stock ROM section on here for your device (all latest FW's are there if people supply them...).
This will install from your PC to the Flyer when USB cable is connected, cancel HTC Sync then close it, and then run the RUU update.
This will install the latest firmware but the results are:
s-off is still present.
CWM Recovery and Super User are removed.
All you have to do then is
Uninstall HTSync from your PC.
Shut down both PC and Flyer and restart.
Connect the flyer back to the PC in HTC sync mode, and run revolutionary.exe, it will protest that your unit is already s-off but will give you the option to install CWM again.
Once this is done, you can use CWM to re-install the Superuser file su-2.3.6.3-egfh.zip
Your Flyer will be back to a rooted, Super User factory version of the latest update where you have to install all your apps and customisations again, BUT at least you got your update....
If you did not save the revolutionary.zip file first time, you can still perform this through the website.
If you want to enable phone function, you can either perform the build.prop edit found on this forum area or I would suggest you use the http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1205050&v=1&libid=1314447895451&out=http%3A%2F%2Fandroidrevolution.nl%2Fnickiberli%2Findex.php%3Fdir%3DFlyer%252FMODs%252F&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fforumdisplay.php%3Ff%3D1023&title=%5BROM%5D%5BKernel%5D%5BFlyer%5D%20FlyHigh%20ROM%20v1.2%20%7C%20extra%20speed%20%7C%20GSM%2FWiFi%20script%20%7C%20Android%202.3.4%20-%20xda-developers&txt=enable_gsm_phone_calls.zip&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13144479250571 by niciberli installed via CWM (donate to him as this one gives true contact images in phone...)
Only drawback with that is your software version in 'About Device' will say FlyHigh ROM! but it is actually stock.....
Enjoy....
Donate to football if you can in the shipped ROMs thread as he provides the support for this and any other guys such as globatron. For me, just tick the Thanks box if you find it useful.
Thank you... now I just need the latest update RUU 2.27.207.1 for o2
Well this was just perfect for me. I lost root when I flashed a stock rom and I was looking for an easy way to get it back. This did it! Thanks so much.
You can also re-flash recovery using fastboot and then install su.zip. You don't have to use revolutionary, for some people the recovery download doesn't work through revolutionary.
See the instructions in my S-OFF thread for what to do if revolutionary fails to install recovery and go from there.
As CWM is removed when a RUU is performed, and a .zip needs to be installed, I tried to keep it simple for noobs, but any input is welcome for all of us!
Does this work for the Sprint View? If not, can you tell me how to upgrade a rooted/s-off evo view?
thank Farsquidge.
but i cannot find the Original Rom for HK.
don't know how to update 2.3.4
maybe waiting a new vision to update my flyer
thank you again

Thanks - however, can someone point me to the correct RUU? I am currently using Sprint Evo View 1.18.651.1, baseband 1.05.11.0509. It is rooted with S-OFF. I looked in this post but could not find the correct RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062184
TIA
Edit: I was able to flash it back to stock, then upgraded to GB 2.3.4, and re-rooted. I cannot figure out how to flash recovery - I keep getting "waiting for device".
what hboot version do you have after running this?
i now have hboot-6.10.1002. and following this link but using RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.23.405.3_R_Radio_20.3504.30.08 9BU_3809.07.04.06_M_release_204108_signed instead.
So I am not sure if this is related, but what is happening is that the internal storage is not picked up by CWM. Or is that expected behaviour?

new evo 3d owner needs help!

Hey i just got the Evo 3d yesterday, i had an acer liquid before, and i had that all rooted and flashed with roms no problem, but i can't quite figure out the evo 3d method, i have the GSM version so i see there are only about 3 roms out for it right now. I am not sure which method is the best to follow. My goals are to:
- Perm Root
- Install Clock Work Recovery (S-off)
- Nandroid back up
I tried searching these in the the forums and didn't come across much, don't know where the instructions are posted. Thanks!
Howdy, CDMA EVO 3D user here. We have been using revolutionary.io for rooting our phones. I'm not sure if GSM is supported yet. Go to that site and follow their instructions. They're super easy and it will give you perm root, and s-off, and custom recovery. They flash their recovery but you can install ROM Manager and put on clockwork. That's what I did and works great. Again, I don't know yet if the GSM is supported yet. Look at the CDMA EVO 3D forums for the guide on everything.
As far as ROMs go, in order to have anything other than a Sense rom we need the kernel source. HTC has to release it to the public and then the devs will do their thing. Another problem has been the higher resolution screen. Stuff like CM7 and MIUI have to be redone to display the graphics correctly. I tested a miui build and it wasn't pretty. Just give it some time.

I have a GSM model, so I can confirm this process worked;
First find out what hboot you're on. Turn off the phone, then press volume down+power, and you'll see it there.
You'll need to download these files;
The HTC drivers for windows are here;
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
The revolutionary tool is here;
http://revolutionary.io/ (you'll need your hboot and serial number)
Those two files you'll put on your PC. Install the drivers (make sure HTC sync is disabled on your PC, assuming you've installed it... I had to actually uninstall it to get the drivers to properly install). Turn on USB debugging on your phone, plug it in to your computer, unzip the revolutionary tool, then click on the revolutionary.exe. That should do it! At the end, it will ask you if you want to download and install cwm, click yes, and you're done!
This will give you s-off.
Now for root, get this file (http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip), put it on the root of your sd, and flash it from recovery. (Same process you would have used with Malez Recovery on your Liquid)
I am still running stock and haven't tried any ROMS out myself yet, so I can't comment on that! In any case, from one former Liquid user to another, good luck, and welcome to the 3D family!

Root & recovery

Having gone through the HD Desire who loved and still love, I went to the Samsung galaxy SII for 30 days, make the greatest efforts, but the impression I have is empty. This is because I've always moved with the sense and I found it better launcher, plus the kitchen of the HTC phones are unique for that reason I got on sale and bought the evo sgs2 3d. Whenever I asked for root to those who know htcmanía and this time there is still no comment. I have read in various forums and none made it clear to me as root and put the recovery in the evo 3d gsm, if there is someone who can explain it as a step by step tuto agrdeceré infinitely. Thanks and participate to get the evo is a great smart 3d.
AFTER MUCH ENDED TUTO CHEW
Well finally after much reading I think I can put together this tutorial, I have two evo gsm 3d and it worked wonders,
Step 1: Download the two attached zip and unzip them only the second which is then used the exe, save it for the first zip the end.
Step 2: Run the exe. driver htc (htcdriver3.0.0.007), always with the evo off.
the driver must be downloaded here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p.../revolutionary
Step 3: Connect to EVO and put it in debug configuration from usb
Step 4: Now pay attention. There is a folder called Revolutionary-0.4pre4 decompress and run the exe, black and a window with a number, must copy and close the black window because after returning.
Step 5: The website of Revolutionary box appears Beta Key (need to identify clearly our model) is where should paste the copied number in step 4, and generate the code mother (With Kilombo is this more than mother code is a *****).
http://revolutionary.io/
Step 6: This code must copirlo mother and paste it in the famous black window that I explained that close, now we give to enter.
Step 7: Once the process will ask if you want to install the recovery and put the Y (yes not now what the hell do).
Step 8: Almost ready after restarting the phone and seeing that medium work (ha ha), put the last file in the downloaded folder still do not use the sd memory of the phone, your zip-efgh 2.3.6.3 ...
Step 9: Turn off and turn on Evo down with volume and on, we will now install the file recovery mencinado from sd card file, install and then say later installed. Then finish and give to reboot and finish and we can put the rom you want.
Well I hope to serve and be useful, constructive criticism is heard.

sadly this wont work for HBOOT other than 1.49.0007 and 1.49.0008
Mine is HBOOT 1.49.0011, and it doesn't work
It has been released from HTCdev, with "Unlocking Your Bootloader" you can install custom roms, isnt that you want?
Here is the link:

1.49.0011 <== can't use.
How to do now ?
Please somebody help me. I installed bad kernel, and ROMManager the ends the Clockworks Recovery. Does'nt start the Rom, and I cannot restore it. How it is possible to make the Clockworks Recovery free, and to restore the Rom?

starts in bootloader and load the rom official with that fix the problem.
Thank you.
My problem was not resolved.
After setting off with a HBOOT fill, fastboot, recovery, and factory reset. I see these. If I select it the fastbootot, bootloader and reboot come, but makes nothing with these. Only steps back. The recovery it's locked (Rom Manager)... HTC HD2, task29 wiped everything, and the replanting was possible. From a computer it's not possible to install the kernel or Rom again?
Mine is HBOOT 1.49.0011
im waiting for it also

S-OFF can be reversed so that methods not a problem which the Team Revolution unlock method does...but if you use the HTC Bootloader unlocker it will leave evidence and they will know that you did it and you might lose your warranty.
If you have a 1.49.0011 HBOOT, I'd wait until Team Revolution fix it.
Me neither .. waiting for team revolutionary release HBOOT 1.49.00.11
Is there a way to relock and s-on your phone back to the stock? I have a falf screen freeze issue and want to send the phone back to htc for repair.
Cheers!!!!!!!!
Just wondering, I'm S-Off and Rooted already.
If I'm using SystemApp Remover to uninstall some stock program
Rogers - Ringback, wifi calling, etc.....
Will I be available to upgrade the OS via OTA by htc?
Many thanks in advance.~
Serial number...?
I'm not quite sure how I feel about giving my serial number to achieve s-off and root. What malicious activities can be done with this info?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Waiting..
Yeah.. me too waiting to 's-off' for hboot 1.49.0011

Trying to root using HTC 1.5 with no success.
Hi to all I have tried to root using the HTC boot unlocker with no success. I was using the step by step instructions from HTC evo hacks. I got to the step at the command prompt where I put in the unlock code and I got this : C:\rootevo3dnew>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.152s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
(bootloader) unlock token check successfully
OKAY [ 0.007s]
finished. total time: 0.161s
The phone screen asking me to unlock the bootloader never came up. Any help would be appreciated. BTW I have rooted at least 7 EVO 3D's. with no problems.

See the Guide/flashing Notes in my signature. You need to rerun the currently installed "FULL" Ruu or the the Latest RUU, then the unlock will work.
I did the HTCDev and unlocked it went to thread on downgrade from 1.5 hboot to 1.4 tried that and it did not work. I went to try the wire trick and this is what I get when I try to use the controlbear. the phone connects and goes through process but says the following...

Ok, let's make sure we know where you are at to start with. When you use the vol and power button to boot to fastboot, does the phone show "unlocked". If not, I think you need to do the htc method again. I have not kept up recently, but I am not sure there is any method other than the HTC method that works every time for 1.5. I have used the HTC method on two phones without a problem, so that is the method I use.
Once you get that far, I used adb to push or flash the twrp image into the recovery section of the phone. Then you should be able to flash superuser via the install menu of twrp. There are threads that have detailed explanations on how this is done.
Yea, I had a bit of a learning curve from my TP2 also, but love this phone!

In my post Ive included a flashable SuperSU zip. What youll need to do is boot to recovery and install this zip. Then reboot. You should have superuser access then.
Still learning this forum so excuse any errors I make. I've spent the last 10 hours trying to fix the mess I created on my wife's Evo 3d. I was able to root my phone and it was relatively easy so I tackled hers as well and have gotten a bootloop I cannot figure out, 10 hours later. I'm on hboot 1.5. I unlocked the phone (using a pretty reliable video), loaded 4EXT Recovery then tried to load roms. Everything worked fine until the rom-loading portion. Since then, the phone loops, but once or twice it made it all the way to the main screen and before I could slide the ring, a read error message appeared next to the bars of service then the phone just completely reboots. Right now, the only thing I can get into is the bootloader and the clockworkmod v4.0.1.4, somehow I lost my 4EXT Recovery. I'm stuck and in dire straights as my wife is going out of town and will KILL me if I don't fix her phone. Please help! BTW, somehow I managed to NOT back anything up (stupidity on my part). Will I be able to get this thing back to stock at least or is it now a paperweight?

Right now, the only thing I can get into is the bootloader and the clockworkmod v4.0.1.4, somehow I lost my 4EXT Recovery. I'm stuck and in dire straights as my wife is going out of town and will KILL me if I don't fix her phone. Please help! BTW, somehow I managed to NOT back anything up (stupidity on my part). Will I be able to get this thing back to stock at least or is it now a paperweight?

Your not bricked by any means. And Im going to guess you tried to boot an ICS rom.. dont. They dont work with hboot 1.5. If you really want to go back to stock run the 2.17 RUU and youll be back to where you started. Another option is to download a GB rom and flash that. Not ICS. If your able to get to the bootloader than you can still load up 4ext recovery so you can flash the GB rom.
Edit: some hboot 1.5 users are lucky and can flash them if they used the correct VM firmware but majority of users have problems.

Thanks, I just tried flashing a rom that has taken it back to stock but I'm still in the bootloop. Should I stop flashing and simply locate the RUU?
22410,
It sounds like the kernel did not flash correctly with 4ext Recovery (next time, make sure u indicat S-on in its settings). I'm not sure if you were just stock 2.17 rooted or not, but use 7zip on your pc to open & extract/copy out the "boot.img" file from the rom, zip, etc you were using and copy it to your fastboot pc folder. Still have the Cwm 4.0.1.4 recovery.IMG file there too right (or the 4ext recovery.img file)? Ok...
- put phone in fastboot usb mode
From PC's fastboot command prompt type:
- " fastboot flash boot boot.img "
(this will reflash the kernel/boot image extracted from a rom)
If your recovery is screwed up:
- " fastboot flash recovery YourRecoveryFilename.img "
(ie: cwm_4.0.1.4_recovery.img or recovery.img, etc as listed in fastboot folder, to reflash a recovery to your phone).
With S-on, to properly enter a recovery for flashing ANYTHING you must:
- " fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img "
(doesn't apply if using 4ext's Smartflash or TWRP's Dumlock settings. But you must have a bootable android OS/kernel first, once the flash is screwed it won't work).
If u have a Sprint CDMA EVO3D/HTC Unlocked & S-on (not Jbear s-Off), then the guide in my signature has more info.
Edit: as NIN said you will likely have problems flashing ICS roms with S-on (hboot version doesn't matter). If u are still unlocked & have a working recovery u can flash any gb Rom successfully after wiping system, data, & cache (or run superwipe zip). Meanrom GB v4.5 recommended.

[Q] AMAZE 4G softbricked

I've rooted and installed custom ROMs on a few devices in the past without any problems.
My son tried to root his Amaze4G. I'm not sure exactly what he's accomplished and I'm not sure how to back out his changes.
Phone is Android 4G S-ON appears to be unlocked.
4EXT is installed and appears to work fine.
I was able to use 4EXT to sinstall superSU.zip
When I try to do the same with ph85img.zip, it says E:Can't open /internal_sdcard/ph85img.zip (bad) Installtion aborted.
I have tried this with every TMO file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617644:
If i power down the phone, it simply stops at the HTC screen and I have to pull the battery to get it to turn off.
I don't have a backup and, for the moment, I don't have an SD card (the one from my phone is encrypted), but will pick one up in the morning.
If anyone can point me to some guidance about how to get the phone back up, I'd appreciate it. I've seen several threads with similar problems, but they seem to want s-off and I don't believe I can get there since I don't have a stock ROM. Also, I was under the impression that 4EXT doesn't require it.
Ok whoa...
1. The RUUs in the page you listed are RUUs. They are installed by being renamed PH85IMG.zip and being placed in the external memory card root and then rebooting into Hboot(not through recovery) . BUT you don't need to do that.
2. I think what has happened so far is the Amaze is S-ON and dev unlocked with a 4ext recovery (correct me if I'm wrong). What probably happened was after the Recovery was a ROM was flashed without Smartflash on which is needed for S-ON devices.
Here's what you do.
a. Pick a ROM. Any ROM you like. ViperAmaze 1.6.3 is the flavor of the week and CM10 is pretty good too.
b. Download it. Use 4ext to Mount the USB storage and transfer your ROM on any memory card (and don't forget any gapps or sapps)
c. Enable Smart Flash. This is probably what went wrong. In 4ext recovery go to TOOLS make sure that Smartflash is ENABLED.
d. Flash your ROM. Don't for get to fully wipe.
Remember : you can enter recovery through the Hboot. Pull batt. Hold down VOL DOWN and POWER. Select Recovery.
