new evo 3d owner needs help! - HTC EVO 3D

Hey i just got the Evo 3d yesterday, i had an acer liquid before, and i had that all rooted and flashed with roms no problem, but i can't quite figure out the evo 3d method, i have the GSM version so i see there are only about 3 roms out for it right now. I am not sure which method is the best to follow. My goals are to:
- Perm Root
- Install Clock Work Recovery (S-off)
- Nandroid back up
I tried searching these in the the forums and didn't come across much, don't know where the instructions are posted. Thanks!

Howdy, CDMA EVO 3D user here. We have been using revolutionary.io for rooting our phones. I'm not sure if GSM is supported yet. Go to that site and follow their instructions. They're super easy and it will give you perm root, and s-off, and custom recovery. They flash their recovery but you can install ROM Manager and put on clockwork. That's what I did and works great. Again, I don't know yet if the GSM is supported yet. Look at the CDMA EVO 3D forums for the guide on everything.
As far as ROMs go, in order to have anything other than a Sense rom we need the kernel source. HTC has to release it to the public and then the devs will do their thing. Another problem has been the higher resolution screen. Stuff like CM7 and MIUI have to be redone to display the graphics correctly. I tested a miui build and it wasn't pretty. Just give it some time.

I have a GSM model, so I can confirm this process worked;
First find out what hboot you're on. Turn off the phone, then press volume down+power, and you'll see it there.
You'll need to download these files;
The HTC drivers for windows are here;
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
The revolutionary tool is here;
http://revolutionary.io/ (you'll need your hboot and serial number)
Those two files you'll put on your PC. Install the drivers (make sure HTC sync is disabled on your PC, assuming you've installed it... I had to actually uninstall it to get the drivers to properly install). Turn on USB debugging on your phone, plug it in to your computer, unzip the revolutionary tool, then click on the revolutionary.exe. That should do it! At the end, it will ask you if you want to download and install cwm, click yes, and you're done!
This will give you s-off.
Now for root, get this file (http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip), put it on the root of your sd, and flash it from recovery. (Same process you would have used with Malez Recovery on your Liquid)
I am still running stock and haven't tried any ROMS out myself yet, so I can't comment on that! In any case, from one former Liquid user to another, good luck, and welcome to the 3D family!

[Q] Can i Root, S-OFF, CWM Recovery from stock, without wiping?

I've just received my HTC EVO 3D GSM, and i want to root it, S-OFF, CWMR and that..
I've had a HTC Desire before, rooted and CWMR but not S-OFF, and i was running CyanogenMod 7 on it.
I've decided (so far) to keep my EVO 3D running stock ROM.
But i do want root, to be able to do nandroid backups, titantium backup, underclock/overclock it, etc etc.
Can i simply use Revoluntionary to S-OFF and install CWMR, and then flash "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip" to achieve root (aka SU) ?
And then i'll have root, without wiping or resetting anything on my phone?
I'm semi new to this, and i really don't want anything to go wrong
On my CDMA Evo, I skipped the backups and stuff and it never wiped or asked me to wipe. I still ended up with S-OFF, twrp, root, etc. without having to wipe.
I'm the exact same as you, just came from a HTC Desire with CM7 to an EVO 3D.
Id really like to know what the best process is, from what i can tell the HTC method isn't the one to us.
The other thing I'd like to know is exactly what is the problem with phone that have been updated to 2.3.4, people have said not to update if you want to root??
Check the gsm dev section...gsm doesnt have much to play with right now but im sure it will soon
Hey, a little update and maybe some help to others in the same situation as mine.
I've now successfully rooted & S-OFF'd my HTC EVO 3D GSM, though still using stock ROM.
I followed this lovely guide, which was very nice, and worked like a treat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smp6cT4UEKE&feature=related
The only thing i did different was that i used another SU.zip file, since from reading on these forums, the one he linked (in the video) had some errors, so i used the file others recommended.
Recommended SU.zip file:

The HTC Method isn't optimal, since it will not S-OFF your phone, and there are far better ways to unlock your phone properly.
My EVO came preinstalled with 2.3.4, so i'm fairly sure the android version doesn't change anything.
There are different hboot versions floating around, and mine came with 1.49.0007, which can easily be rooted & S-OFF'd with the proper tools (as i linked in my last post).
The 1.49.0008 version is not working properly at the moment i believe (correct me if i'm wrong?)
And if you update your phone to the newest version, you'll get hboot version 1.50, which is not rootable yet (not stable atleast, think i saw some experimental roots at some point?)
And as for more info, i did not loose any data or apps or anything when rooting & S-OFF, so it worked perfectly
Hey thanks for the help, thought I'd just put everything i have down for anyone else. This will S-OFF and Permanent Root an EVO 3D.
Model: HTC EVO 3D GSM (shooter_U)
Android: Gingerbread 2.3.4
Hboot: 1.49.0007
1. Enable USB Debugging on your Phone.
2. Connect Phone to Computers USB.
3. Download "revolutionary-0.4pre4" from http://revolutionary.io/
4. Get Beta Key from http://revolutionary.io/
5. Download & Install "HTCDriver3.0.0.007" from http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
6. Run "revolutionary.exe" from "revolutionary-0.4pre4"
7. Phone should reboot 4 times
8. Type Yes to install Clockwork Recovery Mod.
9. Download "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16651725&postcount=17
10. Copy "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned" zip file to the root of your SD Card
11. Boot into Recovery by Powering off the Phone, then powering thge phone on by holding the "Power Button and Volume Down Button"
12. Press the Volume Down button to select "Recovery" and press "Power Button" to Select. Then Choose "Install ZIP from SD", and install "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned".
13. Done (now check you have SuperUser App, maybe go get Titanium Backup & ROM Manager).
Thanks to Moonbloom, Revolutionary and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smp6cT4UEKE for help.
No problem mate, glad i can help
From what i've seen (personally, on my own phone) and heard on these forums, ROMManager doesn't work properly with HTC EVO 3D GSM.
When i installed the free version of ROMManager, it didn't recognize that i had ClockWorkMod Recovery, but when i rebooted into recovery, it clearly showed that i had CWMR installed.
A lot of people have had this issue, and when you go into ROMManager, it will ask you to flash CWMR to the latest version. If you do this after having used Revolutionary (including the entire process) it will completely **** up your S-OFF, root, CWMR and everything, so don't try and flash CWMR from within ROMManager.
All the things you can do in ROMManager are also doable if you reboot your phone into recovery (just without the fancy ROMManager GUI)

Root & recovery

Having gone through the HD Desire who loved and still love, I went to the Samsung galaxy SII for 30 days, make the greatest efforts, but the impression I have is empty. This is because I've always moved with the sense and I found it better launcher, plus the kitchen of the HTC phones are unique for that reason I got on sale and bought the evo sgs2 3d. Whenever I asked for root to those who know htcmanía and this time there is still no comment. I have read in various forums and none made it clear to me as root and put the recovery in the evo 3d gsm, if there is someone who can explain it as a step by step tuto agrdeceré infinitely. Thanks and participate to get the evo is a great smart 3d.
AFTER MUCH ENDED TUTO CHEW
Well finally after much reading I think I can put together this tutorial, I have two evo gsm 3d and it worked wonders,
Step 1: Download the two attached zip and unzip them only the second which is then used the exe, save it for the first zip the end.
Step 2: Run the exe. driver htc (htcdriver3.0.0.007), always with the evo off.
the driver must be downloaded here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p.../revolutionary
Step 3: Connect to EVO and put it in debug configuration from usb
Step 4: Now pay attention. There is a folder called Revolutionary-0.4pre4 decompress and run the exe, black and a window with a number, must copy and close the black window because after returning.
Step 5: The website of Revolutionary box appears Beta Key (need to identify clearly our model) is where should paste the copied number in step 4, and generate the code mother (With Kilombo is this more than mother code is a *****).
http://revolutionary.io/
Step 6: This code must copirlo mother and paste it in the famous black window that I explained that close, now we give to enter.
Step 7: Once the process will ask if you want to install the recovery and put the Y (yes not now what the hell do).
Step 8: Almost ready after restarting the phone and seeing that medium work (ha ha), put the last file in the downloaded folder still do not use the sd memory of the phone, your zip-efgh 2.3.6.3 ...
Step 9: Turn off and turn on Evo down with volume and on, we will now install the file recovery mencinado from sd card file, install and then say later installed. Then finish and give to reboot and finish and we can put the rom you want.
Well I hope to serve and be useful, constructive criticism is heard.

Mine is HBOOT 1.49.0011, and it doesn't work
It has been released from HTCdev, with "Unlocking Your Bootloader" you can install custom roms, isnt that you want?
Here is the link:

1.49.0011 <== can't use.
How to do now ?
Please somebody help me. I installed bad kernel, and ROMManager the ends the Clockworks Recovery. Does'nt start the Rom, and I cannot restore it. How it is possible to make the Clockworks Recovery free, and to restore the Rom?

Thank you.
My problem was not resolved.
After setting off with a HBOOT fill, fastboot, recovery, and factory reset. I see these. If I select it the fastbootot, bootloader and reboot come, but makes nothing with these. Only steps back. The recovery it's locked (Rom Manager)... HTC HD2, task29 wiped everything, and the replanting was possible. From a computer it's not possible to install the kernel or Rom again?

S-OFF can be reversed so that methods not a problem which the Team Revolution unlock method does...but if you use the HTC Bootloader unlocker it will leave evidence and they will know that you did it and you might lose your warranty.
If you have a 1.49.0011 HBOOT, I'd wait until Team Revolution fix it.
Me neither .. waiting for team revolutionary release HBOOT 1.49.00.11
Is there a way to relock and s-on your phone back to the stock? I have a falf screen freeze issue and want to send the phone back to htc for repair.
Cheers!!!!!!!!
Just wondering, I'm S-Off and Rooted already.
If I'm using SystemApp Remover to uninstall some stock program
Rogers - Ringback, wifi calling, etc.....
Will I be available to upgrade the OS via OTA by htc?
Many thanks in advance.~
Serial number...?
I'm not quite sure how I feel about giving my serial number to achieve s-off and root. What malicious activities can be done with this info?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Waiting..
Yeah.. me too waiting to 's-off' for hboot 1.49.0011

[Q] Rooting EVO 3D that has lastest updates...

I was trying to perma root my EVO 3D with the revolutioary tool but it didnt support my bootloader (HBoot 1.5). Is ther another way I can perma or at least temp root my phone?
If I'm not mistaken you have to use htc's method of unlocking your phone with the hboot you have. Its quite a few threads on this particular subject in q & a. I don't think rev supports that hboot as of yet. If you want the link here it is
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
But I strongly suggest you read the method htc provides to be sure its the route you want to take. Also you should.definitely read read read the q & a to gain a better understanding of what it is and to get users feedback and experiences. I don't personally recommend this method htc uses but I think its the only way to unlock and gain root to your phone with your particular hboot. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I have unlocked my boot loader using HTC's method and now I'm confused on how to root my phone. I'm new to this as u probably can tell. Thanks again.
You have to flash a recovery. Either twrp or clock work mod. If you choose clock work mod then you can download rom manger from the market and flash it from there. If you chose twrp the you can look Here for the latest

1.5 was an ambush ! It plugged the temp root hole, it has also jacked up installing any roms so far on mine...
Do not go near the latest 2 sprint updates !!!!
As for htc unlocker, its a peice of crap and doesnt work on about 40% of phones spring tech support mgr told me when i called to demand a defination of an error code it gives...
And they refuse to support it
sprint bastages are as bad a apple scum...
HTC method works just as well as regular unlock.. it doesn't not work with 40% of phones either. 40% of people just can't follow a simple tutorial...

Actually jlear3 it does not ! If you read the htc unlocker page it directly tells you that evo 3d is exempt from the working unlocker pgm
With 1.5 you cant do jack ! No recovery , no temp root, no roms, nothing !!!! What part of that do you not understand....
My phone came with 1.5 and have been able to use htc unlock and flash anything I want.

I agree. It's not hard to follow a tutorial. My replacement phone shipped with hboot 1.50, I was unaware that the original root method I used on my original 3D wouldn't work, which directed me to htc's unlocker. I unlocked, and was able to get TWRP recovery as well as superuser, flashed a ROM and have been pretty good so far. The only thing I'm aware you can not do is flash radios. Custom Kernel's are available via fastboot, but I haven't delved into that yet.

[Tutorial] How to root HTC Rider//X515E//HTC EVO 4G+//Korean EVO 3D

First off I would like to say that this took hours and hours compiling different information on the internet to figure this out. I do not take credit for any of the exploits or anything else in this. I am simply Writing the tutorial on how to use everything correctly to achieve root on a HTC Rider (HTC EVO 4G+)
Step1) go to http://www.htcdev.com/ and follow the guide to unlock your bootloader. Very simple instructions. You will need the following prior to unlocking your boot loader:
1.The Google Android SDK - http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
2. Java Runtime Environment - http://java.com/
3. HTC Sync - http://www.htc.com/www/help/
Step2) Download HTC EVO 4g+ adb and recover image from - http://www.mediafire.com/?cyiz55mo4u666au
Unzip HTC EVO 4g+ adb and recover to the place of your liking I chose C:\
Enable USB debugging on your HTC EVO 4G+
Open a command prompt start>run>CMD
Restart the phone into HBOOT and select FASTBOOT
Plug phone in via usb.
Input the following command CD C:\adb
then type the following command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Reboot phone.
Step 3) Turn on phone and copy su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip from HTC EVO 4G adb and recovery to the root of your SD card in your phone.
Restart phone into Hboot then choose BOOTLOADER
From BOOTLOADER choose RECOVERY
Once in RECOVERY choose Install zip from SD CARD using the camera button on the side of the HTC EVO 4G+
You then choose su-2.3.6.3-efgh-fixed-unsigned.zip
It will then move you to a menu that has a large amounts of -NO's and one that says -Yes then the file name choose yes again with the camera button.
Once installed simply use the back button untill you see the option reboot.
Once rebooted you should have SU installed along with full SU privileges.
Sorry for the disorganized manner of this tutorial as this is the first one I have ever written and I just did this my self for the first time.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
I did this on a HTC EVO 4G+ with HBOOT 1.43.0000,Android 2.3.4,Software number 1.47.1010.4,Kernel version 2.6.35.13-gAD1A583.

the 4G+ is NOT the korean EVO3D either. That was crap the blogs were spouting before the phones came out wayyyy back in june/july. It has nothing 3D about it at all.

Can someone make a new rooting guide?

Now that the HTCDev allows the unlocked bootloader, and stuff at their website, is there a better (read:easier, quicker) method of installing CyanogenMod? I had rooted my phone a long time back but I had issues and had gone back to Stock ROM for a long time. Now, I feel the need to go back to Custom ROMS.

Edit:- Now done Hboot 1.02 and unlocked boot loader, can't use clockwork mod update.zip :-(
I haven't yet done the hboot update to 1.02, but my understanding is that once you've done it, you can use clockwork mod to flash custom rom, the bootloader is already unlocked so shouldn't need rooting again.

CM7 for the Legend is very mature.
Everything I use, including the Market, works fine.
Does the Wifi Access Point work on CM7 ? I've read on several custom roms it doesn't because of driver issues.

After I unlock my Legend with HTCDev,
I used the wildfire path on unrevoked.com
unrevoked installed clockwork mod and everything, so I just needed to put the cyanogenmod zip on my sd card and install from recovery.
very easy
I did pretty much the same thing as ranger4740. I used HTCSuperTool v3 to gain root but had problems flashing CWM Recovery from the stock recovery. So I did a bit of researching and ended up having to put my phone into fastboot and use adb to push the recovery image onto my Legend and flash it. After that I've had no problems with my rooted Legend Once I'm able to post links (because I'm still pretty new here) I hope to write a full updated root guide
The unrevoked method is seriously the easiest one and I've tried heaps of methods
Took me a half hour and I was playing with cyanogen 7.
I can put up some instructions if u like, but it would have to wait until I get back to the laptop, and honestly, its incredibly straight forward.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Check your hboot. If your hboot is less than 1.00 than unrevoke is the fastest way. Dont bother to bootloader unlock phone via htcdev. Since unrevoke also flash a cwm recovery. You can flash any rom directly from there.
But else follow the htc dev guide to unlock bootloader. Once your bootloader got unlocked. Use fastboot to flash your recovery to cwm. With this cwm recovery you can flash cm7 directly.
Before htcdev gave bootloader unlock for our legend, The only reason i found why we of thouse with hboot 1.00 and above need to downgrade to eclare is to also downgrade stock recovery to e2 from e3 which came during froyo. Because our cwn fakeflash update.zip only able to load from e2. Thus from eclare you can flash cm7.
The guides are there. Its already there. Many of us has use it successfully.
