Now that the HTCDev allows the unlocked bootloader, and stuff at their website, is there a better (read:easier, quicker) method of installing CyanogenMod? I had rooted my phone a long time back but I had issues and had gone back to Stock ROM for a long time. Now, I feel the need to go back to Custom ROMS.
Can someone tell me if the Google Market works well on CM7? That's all I care for, really.
Here is a guide I had posted a while back when I was an enthusiast. Could someone go through it and modify it in accordance to the new method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823625
Thank you, everyone!
Edit:- Now done Hboot 1.02 and unlocked boot loader, can't use clockwork mod update.zip :-(
I haven't yet done the hboot update to 1.02, but my understanding is that once you've done it, you can use clockwork mod to flash custom rom, the bootloader is already unlocked so shouldn't need rooting again.

Sill me, I did not see the "Proceed to Step 1."
once you have Hboot 1.02 update done, you are NOT rooted, you need to use
HTC SuperTools v3 from here: http://barbey.me/?page_id=202
I did selection 1 then 3, then had su, but android commander reported no root access anymore

CM7 for the Legend is very mature.
Everything I use, including the Market, works fine.
Does the Wifi Access Point work on CM7 ? I've read on several custom roms it doesn't because of driver issues.

tethering works fine on a CM 7.1.0 device here ;-)
After I unlock my Legend with HTCDev,
I used the wildfire path on unrevoked.com
unrevoked installed clockwork mod and everything, so I just needed to put the cyanogenmod zip on my sd card and install from recovery.
very easy
I did pretty much the same thing as ranger4740. I used HTCSuperTool v3 to gain root but had problems flashing CWM Recovery from the stock recovery. So I did a bit of researching and ended up having to put my phone into fastboot and use adb to push the recovery image onto my Legend and flash it. After that I've had no problems with my rooted Legend Once I'm able to post links (because I'm still pretty new here) I hope to write a full updated root guide
The unrevoked method is seriously the easiest one and I've tried heaps of methods
Took me a half hour and I was playing with cyanogen 7.
I can put up some instructions if u like, but it would have to wait until I get back to the laptop, and honestly, its incredibly straight forward.

Check your hboot. If your hboot is less than 1.00 than unrevoke is the fastest way. Dont bother to bootloader unlock phone via htcdev. Since unrevoke also flash a cwm recovery. You can flash any rom directly from there.
But else follow the htc dev guide to unlock bootloader. Once your bootloader got unlocked. Use fastboot to flash your recovery to cwm. With this cwm recovery you can flash cm7 directly.
Before htcdev gave bootloader unlock for our legend, The only reason i found why we of thouse with hboot 1.00 and above need to downgrade to eclare is to also downgrade stock recovery to e2 from e3 which came during froyo. Because our cwn fakeflash update.zip only able to load from e2. Thus from eclare you can flash cm7.
The guides are there. Its already there. Many of us has use it successfully.

There is no known actual s-off method for the 1.5 hboot, not yet at least. You will either have to wait or use the HTC unlock method.

I recommend this guide. [GUIDE] HTC Unlock Hboot 1.50 + TWRP Recovery + Root + Flash Ur Ass Off! [9.11.11] One note about this GUIDE. The modified Recovery file works perfect, but its an older version of TWRP. Once you are unlocked and good to go, flash the latest TWRP 1.1.1., then the rom, etc.
Dont let all the voided warranty FUD scare you away from the HTC Unlock method. Revolutionary team is not messing with Hboot 1.5 so if you want to flash ROMs and kernels this is as good as it will probably get.
A second method for flashing once rooted is here:[APP] Flash Image GUI - Flash Kernels and Recoveries from normal Android mode! Its an app that makes it VERY easy but its not free. This allows you to flash directly from android without messing around with adb/command prompt, etc. (like if we had full S-OFF pre-hboot 1.5 version) It's a nice app for only $1.
unlock via HTCdev.com
The only thing you'll have some issues with is flashing roms with different kernels from recovery - you can get around this issue connected to a computer with
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot recovery.img
and you'll have a recovery running in fastboot with full root... I'm using an image of twrp 1.1.1 as my "recovery.img" on the computer.
You can also use FlashImageGUI and flash kernels and ROMs from the OS itself
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
You can unlock your htc legend at HTC DEV.
Once the new file is installed and the phone is s-off, how do I re-root the phone?
Exactly! Also my question! They want you to upgrade your Bootloader which will disable you from rooting (all methods I've heard of require old versions Bootloader).
Any solution before we dive into this WONDERFUL UNLOCKED REALM?
Hi, just signed up to HTC dev to see what's going on with bootloader unlock, I started the procedure but told me it wants to delete everything on my phone, bugger that.
This is HTC official root method, it says you can load custom rom's and change the recovery but it is still s-on to protect the radio and sim lock (network).
Now if u are not already rooted then its gonna make it hard, esspecialy to backup, however we still have revolutionary temp root to backup with titanium.
For those already rooted, I'm not sure if there is any advantage, except you can flash custom recovery, we have fakeflash so not much point IMO.
Oh, just realised it gives unrestricted access to /system folder so that might make it worth while after all..

Good question. I suspect it might only work with unrooted legends.
If that is the case its gonna be a big hassle, but not impossible.

wow wow wow WOOOW!!! I didn't expected this!!!!! I will unlock my bootloader and install the clockwork recovery ASAP!
For rooted legend you can make a nandroid, install the RUU, install a recovery (the .img recovery from the rom manager site) and restore the nandroid
Do you plan on doing it on yours?
I noticed that there is also a wifi security update out for the legend too,
The bootloader unlock is 3.15.405.5, and the wifi fix is 3.15.405.6, so I guess it has to be in that order or the bootloader unlock wont run.
Good,Now my phone has hboot unlocked, but is there a way to disable the security flag and finally get SOFF now ?
Stevenstrike,
Did you install that update on top of your cm custom rom?
Any problems at all?
No
Just find a HTC stock rom for your legend, then update the rom via OTA if needed, then try to apply the hboot update, after that use the htcsupertoolv3 to gain perm root, and if you want, flash cwm fastboot to access cwm as recovery.
Thanks,
Are you applying their Wifi security fix as well?

Never heard of that, besides my radio is already 7.13.35.05, so i think i dont have to apply this.
Edit : Link to gain Perm Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432074 (link is for wildfire S but also work for Legend)
and link to flash CWM : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1244371&highlight=cwm ( then do a fastboot flash recovery <recoveryFile>.img )
Ah ok, I see that the Bootloader unlock is software version 3.15.405.5, security update is 3.15.405.6, does that make a difference or is it purely the radio that matters?

I still says S-ON but you can do anything that requires r/w permission on /system.
Tested with SU update, BusyBox installation, host write with AdAway.
Gees this is complicated, almost as hard and confusing as rooting hboot 1.01 in the first place.
I have downloaded the hboot 1.02 update, I'm wondering if you can just do that on its own on a rooted phone?
I just worry that it might do some real damage if you do, cause I don't think we can go back to 1.01 or other hboot later.

See the Guide/flashing Notes in my signature. You need to rerun the currently installed "FULL" Ruu or the the Latest RUU, then the unlock will work.

Ok, let's make sure we know where you are at to start with. When you use the vol and power button to boot to fastboot, does the phone show "unlocked". If not, I think you need to do the htc method again. I have not kept up recently, but I am not sure there is any method other than the HTC method that works every time for 1.5. I have used the HTC method on two phones without a problem, so that is the method I use.
Once you get that far, I used adb to push or flash the twrp image into the recovery section of the phone. Then you should be able to flash superuser via the install menu of twrp. There are threads that have detailed explanations on how this is done.
Yea, I had a bit of a learning curve from my TP2 also, but love this phone!

Still learning this forum so excuse any errors I make. I've spent the last 10 hours trying to fix the mess I created on my wife's Evo 3d. I was able to root my phone and it was relatively easy so I tackled hers as well and have gotten a bootloop I cannot figure out, 10 hours later. I'm on hboot 1.5. I unlocked the phone (using a pretty reliable video), loaded 4EXT Recovery then tried to load roms. Everything worked fine until the rom-loading portion. Since then, the phone loops, but once or twice it made it all the way to the main screen and before I could slide the ring, a read error message appeared next to the bars of service then the phone just completely reboots. Right now, the only thing I can get into is the bootloader and the clockworkmod v4.0.1.4, somehow I lost my 4EXT Recovery. I'm stuck and in dire straights as my wife is going out of town and will KILL me if I don't fix her phone. Please help! BTW, somehow I managed to NOT back anything up (stupidity on my part). Will I be able to get this thing back to stock at least or is it now a paperweight?

Your not bricked by any means. And Im going to guess you tried to boot an ICS rom.. dont. They dont work with hboot 1.5. If you really want to go back to stock run the 2.17 RUU and youll be back to where you started. Another option is to download a GB rom and flash that. Not ICS. If your able to get to the bootloader than you can still load up 4ext recovery so you can flash the GB rom.
Edit: some hboot 1.5 users are lucky and can flash them if they used the correct VM firmware but majority of users have problems.

Thanks, I just tried flashing a rom that has taken it back to stock but I'm still in the bootloop. Should I stop flashing and simply locate the RUU?
22410,
It sounds like the kernel did not flash correctly with 4ext Recovery (next time, make sure u indicat S-on in its settings). I'm not sure if you were just stock 2.17 rooted or not, but use 7zip on your pc to open & extract/copy out the "boot.img" file from the rom, zip, etc you were using and copy it to your fastboot pc folder. Still have the Cwm 4.0.1.4 recovery.IMG file there too right (or the 4ext recovery.img file)? Ok...
- put phone in fastboot usb mode
From PC's fastboot command prompt type:
- " fastboot flash boot boot.img "
(this will reflash the kernel/boot image extracted from a rom)
If your recovery is screwed up:
- " fastboot flash recovery YourRecoveryFilename.img "
(ie: cwm_4.0.1.4_recovery.img or recovery.img, etc as listed in fastboot folder, to reflash a recovery to your phone).
With S-on, to properly enter a recovery for flashing ANYTHING you must:
- " fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img "
(doesn't apply if using 4ext's Smartflash or TWRP's Dumlock settings. But you must have a bootable android OS/kernel first, once the flash is screwed it won't work).
If u have a Sprint CDMA EVO3D/HTC Unlocked & S-on (not Jbear s-Off), then the guide in my signature has more info.
Edit: as NIN said you will likely have problems flashing ICS roms with S-on (hboot version doesn't matter). If u are still unlocked & have a working recovery u can flash any gb Rom successfully after wiping system, data, & cache (or run superwipe zip). Meanrom GB v4.5 recommended.

What are the advantages of downgrading to 1.4 and achieving s-off vs. sticking with 1.5 and s-on by using the HTCdev method?
Well fort you want be registered as having messed with your device to prevent a void in your warranty. The others are you can flash without any programs needed to install a kernel also you can flash splash screens. Flashing radios is also a benefit of soff. But soff will allow you to actually brick your device vs having just bootloader unlocked.

Keep this in mind... S-off is great but you can fully permabrick your device with s-off, hard to do but it can be done. S-on blows but I'm pretty sure you can fix anything but a hardware failure with the unbrick method.

Since my roommate is doing it for me (his computers and computer knowledge are way more capable than mine) I let him decide which way he was going to do it. We ended up going with the HTC bootloader unlock.
We got it successfully unlocked through the bootloader but it still doesn't have root access. Like, apps that require root won't work and he can't get anything to flash on it. Suggestions?

clockworkmod 4.0.1.4 -------> http://db.tt/hm3wkw1q
clockworkmod touch 5.8.0.2 --------> http://db.tt/yKUegldi
TWRP 1.1.1 -------> http://db.tt/ZrIEWf2B
TWRP touch 2.0 -------> http://db.tt/qHgIUljj
Recoveries versions other than these doesn't seem to work with hboot 1.5
CWM touch have a few bugs in this version , they may have fixed in the latest....
I suggest to try the 4ext recovery....
If you want to root your phone first flash any of these recovery using fastboot or flash image gui
then go to recovery flash this zip if you want SuperSU by Chainfire----------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
OR
this one if you want Superuser by ChainsDD---->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312971
and your stock Rom will be rooted...
you can always flash custom ROMs , they come pre rooted , so after flashing any recovery just flash any ROMs zip. file.....then you will have custom Rom with root access....

Thank you so much! That is awesome! I really appreciate you getting those all in one place for me.
I finally have root access and am currently running infected rom eternity and am super stoked!
reaper24 - Thank you for your input as well. I got the cwm 4... my roommate just tried to do something by going to one of the newer versions... Whatever it was he was trying to do didn't work and he went back to 4, so I'll definitely be sticking with that for now.
Next order of business... unlocking my friends' phone. She got hers in January (preloaded with hboot1.5 and 2.17). Can't get it to unlock via HTC bootloader unlock. I did read that there is a problem getting the newer ones that shipped with the updated software to unlock. I understand you need the 2.08 RUU. I found an active link and downloaded the file... Now what do I do with the thing?
Where did you find the working ruu I need one. I honestly think you just rename it to pg86img put it on the root of your sd card and hold down vol down and power. Once it loads into bootloafer it will scan the file and ask you if you want to flash it over.

If her phone has 2.17 then you can't run the 2.08. You need to run the 2.17 and then you can unlock it. I had to do that too.
For those of you going for the HTC Unlock (vs downgrade) i think maany of your questions & detailed walkthru can be found in the guide in my signature.

So my girlfriends Legend has slowed to a near stop, she wasn't interested in rooting it before but now It's just unusable she's changed her mind.
So I was going to use htcdev to unlock the bootloader and root with HTCroot.
Once I have root can I install busybox and superuser straight from the market?
Can the stock kernal be overclocked?
And finally does the stock Rom run ok when debloated and overclocked?
I have read a lot of information but a lot of it seems outdated now htcdev exsists.

To answer a few of those q's no u can't over clock stock rom
Depending on which info your talking about, unless its rootung , then I wouldn't exactly say that the info was outdated all the principles are the same really.
One of the biggest killers for me was the stock Facebook rubbish getting it of my phone was a wonderful feeling
If u use HTC supper root tools you will already have busy box and super user, can't be rooted without them.

If you are gonna use HTCDEV to unlock, then follow these steps and your gf's Legend will be re-born
1. Follow HTCDEV instructions to the T
2. You will be asked to create a folder, viz Android(similar to ADB in your c:\)
You need this to use fastboot to place unlock token to your phone. When you
done, Clockworkmod recovery img in the same folder and use fastboot for the
recovery img.
3. Once you have CWM recovery, place Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip in your
sdcard and installed it.Download busybox install from market and install
busybox 1.94 or whatever version u need.
You are rooted
4.Download this(http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=493093&d=1295359342) kernel and flashed it with CWM, and you can overclock or flash ICS or whatever, don't worry about S on once you are HTCDEV unlocked. One thing though, if on stock, you won't be able to use Darktremor A2sd script, well not unless you use his guide for developers, which is quite easy to follow. You can purchase Titanium backup pro or root uninstaller to uninstall apps in don't want, somewhat like customising your own rom
I have done 2 Legends this way so I can safely say it works. Enjoy
Thanks for this! Will be trying tomorrow, just got ICS on my EVO 3d lastnight, so still playing around with that.
Only thing that concerns me is uing adb, I've got away with not using with my other devices so far

I used your method and it worked great, I didn't flash whatever this is;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=493093&d=1295359342??
I just wiped everything and flashed the ICS Beta. It works great for a beta, really impressed. Confused why it can't find my wireless network though, loads come up in the network list, just not mine, all my other devices connect fine...
And the legend connected to my parents network ok, just dosnt see my network at home....
Also my girlfriends happy she can finally use her phone!

Relevant rooting question:
OK. So I'd finally like to root my HTC Legend in order to install Cyanogenmod. But I'm still a bit afraid to do so.. Warranty issues etc.
But if I want to install Cyanogenmod the easy way, this is what I have to do right?
1) Use the official Unlocker to unlock the bootloader
2) Use HTC Supertool V3 to root the phone
3) Install Cyanogenmod
This is correct right? Is there anything that could go wrong? (Well, of course there is, but I mean: Is this relatively safe and fool-proof to do?)
I'm all very new into Android and especially rooting, so...
Thx.
Just use HTC dev to unlock, then do the steps listed above, install clockworkmod and super user, then you can flash any Rom you want by booting into recovery mode.
