I was trying to perma root my EVO 3D with the revolutioary tool but it didnt support my bootloader (HBoot 1.5). Is ther another way I can perma or at least temp root my phone?
If I'm not mistaken you have to use htc's method of unlocking your phone with the hboot you have. Its quite a few threads on this particular subject in q & a. I don't think rev supports that hboot as of yet. If you want the link here it is
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
But I strongly suggest you read the method htc provides to be sure its the route you want to take. Also you should.definitely read read read the q & a to gain a better understanding of what it is and to get users feedback and experiences. I don't personally recommend this method htc uses but I think its the only way to unlock and gain root to your phone with your particular hboot. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I have unlocked my boot loader using HTC's method and now I'm confused on how to root my phone. I'm new to this as u probably can tell. Thanks again.
You have to flash a recovery. Either twrp or clock work mod. If you choose clock work mod then you can download rom manger from the market and flash it from there. If you chose twrp the you can look Here for the latest

1.5 was an ambush ! It plugged the temp root hole, it has also jacked up installing any roms so far on mine...
Do not go near the latest 2 sprint updates !!!!
As for htc unlocker, its a peice of crap and doesnt work on about 40% of phones spring tech support mgr told me when i called to demand a defination of an error code it gives...
And they refuse to support it
sprint bastages are as bad a apple scum...
HTC method works just as well as regular unlock.. it doesn't not work with 40% of phones either. 40% of people just can't follow a simple tutorial...
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Actually jlear3 it does not ! If you read the htc unlocker page it directly tells you that evo 3d is exempt from the working unlocker pgm
With 1.5 you cant do jack ! No recovery , no temp root, no roms, nothing !!!! What part of that do you not understand....
My phone came with 1.5 and have been able to use htc unlock and flash anything I want.

I agree. It's not hard to follow a tutorial. My replacement phone shipped with hboot 1.50, I was unaware that the original root method I used on my original 3D wouldn't work, which directed me to htc's unlocker. I unlocked, and was able to get TWRP recovery as well as superuser, flashed a ROM and have been pretty good so far. The only thing I'm aware you can not do is flash radios. Custom Kernel's are available via fastboot, but I haven't delved into that yet.

Hey guys,
I'm new to things here. I have done a lot of experimenting though before I'm posting this... and have read A TON of forums trying to find the answers,
I unlocked my Tbolt's bootloader through the HTC method, I've been trying to load CM7, VIRUS, and MIUI rom's and they'll load up into the boot image but will just cycle there and won't go on into the UI.
I've flashed CWK recovery and SU so I don't know why they're not flashing...
The only ROM that I've had success with is the Thunderstick but I don't really like this ROM it's too close to the HTC gingerbread sence
if anyone has any ideas of how I can get CM7 or a VIRUS ROM on my phone please help!!!
Thank you in advanced!!!
The problem you have is because you used the HTC dev unlock method which unlocks the bootloader it leaves you s on. You can't flash custom kernels in recovery with s on which is why you aren't able to boot those roms. Try downloading 4ext recovery. It has a built in tool to flash custom kernels even with s on.

As noted, HTC's tool is certainly deceiving to users looking to "root" their phones. You need "S-OFF" status in order to flash 3rd-party ROMs. I presume you can obtain S-OFF using numerous non-HTC ways. I know that the revolutionary.io method no longer works if your phone has a newer software version of 605.5 - HTC patched the flaw that was being exploited.
yah it's really deceiving... if I would have know this I would have used another way to gain root... but oh well I'll be trying that 4ext recovery control and see if that will work for me THANK YOU!!!
what ROM's have guys been using that you really like for your TBolt?

So far my two favorites are Killasense and iKream. I really like Thundershed but I couldn't get past some very minor issues with it. Here soon you may see something from me.....
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
so I tried flashing 4ext I like it a WHOLE lot better then CWK but the setting that you were talking about with the S-on... it says it's not available for my device.... do ether of you know why that would be? do I need to go in and fix a permission or something...
I tried flashing a ROM that was giving me problems before but it still just loads into the boot.img and then just runs the cycle over and over again.
4ext probably uses the "zerg" exploit which HTC and other manufacturers have patched on various phones, but not all. On the TBolt, for example, I'm not aware of how to gain S-OFF if you're on a s/w version higher than 605.5.
I thought you could downgrade and use the revolutionary tool to unlock and gain s off. After you installed 4ext did you run the app before you restarted and booted into recovery. The first thing it asks is if you have s off. When you select no it sets the recovery up to handle flashing kernels.

Sorry if that was confusing... But yes, I believe you have to downgrade to 605.5 to gain S-OFF. If you're on 605.9 or 605.19, there's no exploit that I know of. Ironically, if I recall correctly, you usually weren't able to downgrade or flash an older version but currently VZW/HTC allows it.
Forgive me, but I've been reading and haven't figured out whether or not downgrading from 1.5 to 1.4 is actually needed or what the benefits are. I'm new to the 3D, but not to android, flashing, or unlocking..I just can't seem to find (I'm sure the info is here somewhere) what the difference and advantages/disadvantages between the two. I'm perfectly comfortable downgrading, so I'm just looking for some input.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
Downgrading gives you the ability to have s-off, meaning you are fully rooted and unlocked, meaning you can flash roms and kernels through recovery without using a workaround. You can also flash radios as well.
As always it will give you the ability to flash custom rom's and kernal's as you stated in your post you find out where to start and I suggest you Google rootevo3dnew and its for people that has hboot 1.50 and he makes it very easy to understand and he even makes utube instruction on how to do it thats what I used and I had unlocked bootloader and flashed a custom Rom in less then 15 minutes and he also shows you how to down grade your hboot aswell here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225974

From what I hear, 4ext (see my sig) works great for people on hboot 1.5 with HTC unlock. Having said that, I downgraded and am glad I did. It got the blood pumping and taught me a lot about rooting.

well, after attempting to brick my phone no less than 100 times, I gave up on the downgrading. Just unlocked via HTC's method and flashed thru fastboot. Works well enough. Thanks for the input friends!
I recommend buying the 4EXT application. Upgrade to a the latest version with smartflash and you can load new roms without using fastboot and a PC. Best money I have spent on an app.

The bricking is the hardest part. Everyones phone is a lol different. Mine was a three second pull for instance. But having s-off is much better. I was unlocked but I was one of the first ones to downgrade . Since then it has been greatly streamlined. Don't give up

I must have been lucky with that. Mine bricked second attempt (and first attempt I had forgotten to take out the battery, derp). I used a second hand on my clock to time exactly five seconds and it worked. But, as I (and others) have said, 4ext Recovery allows you to flash the ROM and kernel together, so S-Off is not as necessary. Unless of course, you want to flash an ICS ROM...
Just keep your Hboot 1.5. It's not that big of a deal to me because I am used to using the 'workarounds'.

Some additional info for u I had posted for someone else.
1) HTCdev.com's "Bootloader Unlock"(I have a specific Hboot 1.50 Guide posted here & at sdx):
Basically this leaves the bootloader's (Hboot 1.50) security flag on (S-On) but "unlocks the bootloader" (kinda like the phones Bios) so that you can manually flash everything except for Radios (Baseband) and Boot Logo's (Splash Screen). Kernels & roms can be flashed once a custom recovery is installed, but there are "extra" steps involved because the /boot partition (kernel/zImage) can only be set to write access from the Android OS or by initiating custom recovery from a pc's "Fastboot Command Prompt". There are workarounds, some work better than others. To flash Radio updates, you have to relock the bootloader and flash an OEM Full Stock Ruu (Rom Update Utility), kinda like Samsung's Sw Updater for the Transform. You also have to register your device with HTC and it "may void your warranty".
2) Downgrade Bootloader from Hboot 1.50 to 1.40:
This is a recent development by Unknownforce in the last few weeks. Basically involves corrupting the flashing process of the RUU by removing power in the middle of the flash and "bricking it" (more like mostly bricked). It forces the phone into a special eMMC Download mode that can only be fixed by pushing the older bootloader to the phone from a Linux pc. Good thing is that Closeone has a Linux LiveCD.iso that you copy to a USB Drive or CD and temporarily boot to a custom Linux Interface specifically set up for flashing the bootloader.
Once that's done, you rerun an earlier RUU (compatible with Hboot 1.40) to get the phone working fully, then root via "Revolutionary's site" (another fastboot/adb rooting tool) to get S-Off (Full root), load a recovery, update the radio, then you can flash roms & kernels like normal

Hey guys, anyone have advice on whether or not to use HtcDev unlock method or wait for another method? I have a protection plan through Best Buy and they don't even check to see if its been "tampered" or not if I need a replacement. I am coming from EVO 3D and had hboot v1.4 so I never needed to use the HTC method. Just curious if it is harder to flash Roms and kernels with HTC method I guess. Thanks for the help in advance and its great to see such great devs working on this great phone already.
For the 3d it was a little harder, but not sure if that's the case for the LTE. I am personally gonna wait for s-off, but there is an app that let's you flash kernels without going through fastboot. Flashimage GUI I'm sure it will have to be updated to work with the LTE if It's even needed.

There is no s-off right now, but there are custom recoveries that work with the HTCDev unlock. Which means, custom roms and backups.
So am I correct in assuming that htcdev unlock with a custom recovery will function the same as s-off in terms of flashing roms, kernels, etc.? Also I should be able to still execute an s-off after performing the htcdev unlock, correct? I would hate to do the htc unlock method and then not be able to get s-off... Thanks again guys!
I have a similar question. When i use HTC dev to unlock, they will keep track. Do they notify sprint that my phone is no longer stock? Can you htc dev LOCK, so as to get it back to normal? I kinda don't even want to root if I have to let HTC know that I'm doing it by htc dev.

When you dev unlock HTC keeps the sn of your phone on file as being unlocked, I doubt they say anything to Sprint though. Even if you relock HTC still knows. I would give it a couple weeks and see if we get s-off if not then you might want to reconsider htcs method.

Not sure about s-off after unlock though I don't see why you couldn't, but on the 3d with the HTC unlock method you had to either fastboot into recovery through adb or use flashimage GUI to flash kernels.

First off htc dev sucks. I had it for a while on my evo 3d with hboot 1.5 and it was terrible and I was dying from being confused on how to flash roms. It worked great for some people and for others like me it didn't. So far right now i'm htcdev unlocked and it's fine I guess. Of course once we get s-off i'll totally go that way as s-off is soooooo much better than the dev unlock.

Yeah I heard it was terrible on the 3D, luckily I had hboot 1.4 so I had s-off... Is it as terrible with the LTE? It seems to me that with clockworkmod recovery and htcdev unlock you are able to flash zips the same as with s-off. Don't know if I am correct on that though...
I thought I read that somewhere too. If that's the case HTC dev unlock would be fine with me.

Use TWRP. That recovery writes to boot, the security flag dont matter with this phone like it did with the 3D. Once your unlocked (HTC way) you can always relock very easily. The first time I flashed a recovery it stuck on the first try unlike the 3D with hboot 1.5.

Now if the htc unlock allows us to write to boot to flash recovery and kernels, would there even be a reason to wait for dev S-off? besides not having to register with htc?

Just to clarify: So unlocking via the HTC method, installing this and then un-rooting with the RUU (if necessary) won't show any evidence of 'tampering', correct?
It might not show any evedence but HTC will know, they keep track of what phones are unlocked. That's why you go through the whole process with the unlock codes.

Hello all, I have been coming to this site for a few months and have found a wealth of helpful info in that time for my previous phone, which was an HTC Desire. I recently switched to a new carrier (T-Mobile) and I got an HTC Amaze 4G. This phone came with ICS already installed. I have browsed through many threads, and read many pages in several threads on making the phone S-Off, unlocking bootloader, and have yet to really understand what exactly I need to do to root my device.
My goal is to just get me phone rooted so that I can install superuser and so I can use some backup/recover apps, remove/freeze most of the bloatware preoinstalled on the phone, and maybe install some custom Roms sometime in the future.
The only thing I have accomplished currently is unlocking bootloader. I still have S-On and Hboot 1.93.0002. I hate to sound like a noob, but after reading through many threads, I am still not sure what exactly I have to do to get this phone rooted.
Can anyone share some info that will help me get my Stock HTC Amaze 4G with stock ICS preinstalled rooted please? I can certainly use some help.
Now that you have unlocked bootloader I think you want to flash a recovery. Download hasoons all in one tool, check that you have usb debugging checked to perform functions. Most users are using 4ext. After recovery is installed flash super user.

Where I am getting confused is it says I have to be rooted before I can do the wire trick to go S-Off.... but I can't figure out how to get rooted first.
**EDIT**I just watched the video from Hasoons program on doing the wire trick, seems simple enough. Only problem is according to the instruction page on the juopunutbear S-Off page, I have to be rooted as a prerequisite before I can do the wire trick, and I can't seem to be able to figure out how exactly to root my device after I unlocked the bootloader. Hi guys.
I have recently developed a simple HTC Evo 3D Root Toolkit. This toolkit is very simple and easy to use, just follow onscreen instructions and in few clicks root your device. After rooting process you will get Unlocked Bootloader (S-OFF),Custom recovery (you can chose within cwm, cwm touch and twrp), Root access(SuperSU or Superuser app). I update this app very soon and if you see some bugs and things like that please send me a message. App is tested and you must accept the Disclaimer window. The website for this app will arrive very soon. I hope that this app will be very useful for you and if you like it click thanks button and spread the word about this project.

...I've been trading PMs with ShadowGaba and this toolkit is quite worth it, actually.
For an unlock no0b such as myself, I was initially cowardly. In the end, after about 12 hours of trial-and-error, it's still absolutely worth it.
Although not entirely clear, SGs toolkit did a successful job of unlocking, installing a recovery, and installing a superuser.
Some of the steps almost felt superfluous, but SG's right; for the most part, follow the directions and you'll unlock successfully.
The only snag for me was having to switch to 4ext recovery (the toolkit offers only twrp and clockworkmod; it'd be nice if 4ext was one of the choices) in order to smartflash a ROM; only because I'm still on 1.58 hboot and S-on, post-unlocking. (Many ROMS just don't flash properly because of the 1.58 hboot and S-on; besides, many posts recommended 4ext recovery in smartflash mode to properly load ROMs, anyhow.)
Although I won't be enjoying any JB ROMs until I wire-trick my way to S-off and/or downgrade my hboot, I am currently enjoying Nega-Lite's Blu-Rom 2.95.651.5 immensely, without fail.
The battery-life and the smoothness are incredibly slick and worth it to flash to from my God-awful, battery-draining, store-bought VM JB OS.
I personally think I'm resourceful enough to get through any snags in the toolkit process, but ShadowGaba was well on-hand and curious to know if I unlocked successfully.
To the fearful, I'm sure SG would help out if you're stuck.
If you're questioning whether or not to unlock, I say go for it; so many delicious ROMs for your HTC EVO 3D await your discovery.
Cheers, ShadowGaba.

Okay meatfest. To get S-OFF you must downgrade hboot to 1.49 and use revolutionary to gain S-OFF.
I will explain why your bootloader says Unlocked and S-ON. HTC has modified new devices HBOOT-s, in other words , they have prohibited flashing custom kernels and some roms to your and mine device. So you have couple solutions:
1.Downgrade HBOOT and gain Revolutionary S-OFF
2.Use HTC Dumlock
3.Flash 4ext recovery
4.Boot into recovery using fastboot and flash ...

Hi, I have hboot 1.58 and software 2.95 and the HTC Dev Unlock method does not work for my phone. The commands go thru but the phone never switches to the Unlock Screen. Do you know of a way to unlock without using the HTC Unlock method??

I ran into the same issue with mine. The issue in my case it was the adb files needed to generate the code to unlock it per the HTC unlock method. The adb files I used (as I am sure you did the same) was part of some package that included it. So I decided to just download the adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030 and executed the CMD prompt from adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030\sdk\platform-tools. Then I followed the HTC Unlock instructions and it worked.
