[Q] hancent security lock does not protect stock messaging - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
i'm using hancent messaging.
there is a security lock option, despite clearly selecting the security level to lock both hancent messaging and stock messaging,
the stock messaging can still be access without entering the lock code/pattern.
whats the point if it din lock the stock messaging?
people can still access all my message.
i'm using SGS2, does this happen to all other SGS2?
since this is a SGS2 forum, and i'm sure there are at least thousands of hancent users here, can you guys check this out for me? does this happen to your SGS2 as well?

Yes, happens on mine too. Sent a bug report to Handcent but had no reply...

Thanks for confirming this. :-D
Was worried I was the only one with this issue.
I send an email to them about this as well in their main site. Hope they reply soon.

Handcent and Visual Voicmail

Since the Evo 3D cannot be rooted yet I am hoping that this is something that can be explained and someone has had similar problem and has a answer.
I have had te Evo 3D since launch day and Handcent is probably the first app I installed on day one ad seemsed to be working just fine until a few days ago.
When I get a voicemail it use to go to the stock visual voicemail but the last few I had gotten my notification started coming from Handcent. It would say I have a message and to call to listen and it would have a 480-970-0000 # to call. Now if I am not mistaken that is a Google voice number but I haven't ever used google voice even though I have a google voice account.
I kept trying to go through Handcent to see if all the settings were correct but I couldn't find anything out of place. Then I did the only thing I could think of and that was to remove handcent and my visual voicemail returned.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to correct it?
I want to keep and use Handcent but I can't figure out why it just started interferring with voicemail.
Can anyone explain this oddity? I hate the stock message app and hope there is a solution because I don't want to have o continue using it and want to us Handcent.
Now I haven't tried to use GoSMS to see if it will work with it but isn't it on the exact same format as Handcent? They are so similar I wonder if they aren't really the same app just different names.
you have to uncheck handcent's setting making it the default messenger. the native sms app has to get the trigger for visual voicemail.
thanks, I was wondering if that would do it. I did uncheck it and voicemails seems to be working properly.....
Where exactly is that option to "uncheck handcent's setting making it the default messenger" can't seem to find it. I myself am having that problem.

I had this problem too and this fixed it for me as well.
In the handcent sms app hit your menu button, go to settings => application settings => default messaging application => disable.
If you intend to only use handcent as I do, make sure to turn off your notifications in the stock messaging app so you don't receive two notifications per 1 message.
Also, on a side note, I had a problem with sending picture messages over handcent, they would always seem to get hung up and not send, but when i tried to send on the stock app it sent just fine. Anyone else have this happen to them?
Thanks for the help, found it!
Also, I get the same problem sometimes when sending picture msgs, where they get "hung up" as you mentioned. Usually when that happens to me, I cancel the picture mail then resend it again. That sometimes works for me.
i have the same problem with gosms but i dont have any option to disable it as the default messaging app

Actually I just went through this and there is a solution that lets you use Handcent and Visual Voicemail.
In Handcent the latest version allows you to make Handcent your default SMS/MMS app. Of course the natural thing to do is select that. Well that's what messes up VVM and causes those annoying text messages instead of the actual voicemails being sent to your device.
Just select "Disable" for that feature. (turn off all notifications on the stock message app so you don't get double notifications).
Next go to VVM and click on the menu and select compose. Put your own phone number in the TO: address field. Next, record a short 1 or 2 second message. Then press send. This will cause VVM to begin working again and in a few seconds any voicmails that are waiting will be sent to your device.
By the way, I've sent the folks at Handcent an email letting them know of this issue. They have yet to respond.
Thanks for the workaround mvansomeren, this was driving me NUTS! All temp fixed thanks to your instructions. Hopefully Handcent will release an update.
I know the feeling! Glad it worked for you as well.

GO SMS Pro - Default Enter App View...

I'm enjoying go sms pro. But I do have one gripe. In the default messaging app, no matter where I'm at in the app (settings, compose, group messages) and I exit/hit home button. When I re-enter the app, I'm viewing my messages by default..
Go sms pro doesnt do this. If I'm in settings and I hit the home screen, then re-enter the app, I'm viewing settings again.. I want to view messages by default. I dont want to have to find my messages.. Any solutions?

This things must be reported to Go developers.
I have the same issue. You are in private box, you hit home screen or lock the phone. When you go back to app. Private box will be there. Which should not be happen and ask password.
So it's some thing an open issue.
I will 3rd the complaint. Its the only thing I dislike about go sms.
Sent from a rebel ship by storing the message in an R2 unit. (Help me, XDA. You're my only hope)
Report it guys, Its a serious security concern, although its not very difficult for them to solve this issue, its the way they are handling multitasking. I am not a GoSMS user otherwise I would have reported myself.
I have reported this issue with a link to this thread to Go Team. Let's see if they consider it to fix.

And it's still not fixed. I'm seriously considering moving to some other messaging app because this is really annoying. Especially, if you have encrypted conversation and it shows you the numpad instead of list of messages when you open the app.

I agree its still not fixed.
The go team focuses on graphical improvements on their apps, not usability improvements.
Plus they killed Go Backup by trying to make it a paid app.
Apparently the newest stock messaging app from Android is going to have a full theming ability. So go sms might be on its last legs for me.

Screen on when receiving a text? Anyway to disable?

Kinda annoying feature. Anyone know how to disable the screen turning on when getting a text?

Mine doesn't do that are you running a stock rom, and what carrier?
Mine doesn't do that either on Sprint.
Yea mine doesn't do that although I wish it did like my og EVO did

I'm on stock Rom. But every ttime I get a text, my screen lights up for about 3 seconds

Since you didn't answer the question of which carrier, I am going with that its Sprint from the model number in your signature.
My girlfriend's S3 is also doing this on her AT&T variant. I haven't been able to find an answer.
I have an AT&T one and it won't do it for email or text and I really would like it to. Must be a setting. Someone has to know.
You have to change the stock app. Stock messaging app is bad anyways. Look into GO SMS Pro or another app of your choice. The app has what your looking for then disable your stock messaging app.
For email just use the Gmail client. This also has the option for it.
Its all about the apps folks. I don't think the stock app has a way to have the screen to just remain off.
I think he is using blazer Rom from phantomhacker cause I also notice it. Sprint version btw.

Workaround
Found a quick fix to this that is way better than defaulting to another SMS app. Simply download "SMS pop up" from the play store, make sure its enabled, and under additional preferences untick "screen on pop up" and then under notification settings untick "enable pop up" (unless you want the pop up of course). You will have to untick the regular SMS app notifications under settings but its a fix that's working for me that still keeps the stock messaging app intact.

That will stop the screen from waking every time but won't turning notifications off in sms settings also prevent the phone the phone from letting you know at all that you have a message?
that is a nice woorkaround but too bad we have to use double the battery and 2 apps running at once to stop it. There has go to be a solution !
I made a thread about this yesterday. It happens to me everytime. On vzw
I'm running ATT variant and my screen wakes up when I get a text. Im currently rooted and looking through the messaging defaults with root explorer. Im sure theres a setting in there that is set to 1 or true that is doing this or vice versa for everyone else. I havent had an android device for quite some time so it might take me a bit to find it. If someone is a bit more experienced than me they'll probably find it faster.

Following what I wrote: If you disable the stock sms notifications under messaging>setting then the phone will not recieve any notifications regarding new messages. This is why SMS Popup is used instead. It uses a notifications service in conjunction with an optional popup to notify you when a new message arrives. If you enable notifications in SMS Popup, you will still receive notifications when new messages arive. SMS Popup is the service that will receive and notify you of the message, not the stock messaging app. It also has some other features including color customization of the LED light and selecting a specific SMS vibrate pattern. Like I said if you disable the "Enable popup" setting under the "notification" menu in SMS Popup it can serve as a intermittent workaround. As for the need to install it to accomplish this simple setting, it has a low battery and memory footprint as it is mostly a simple service and not a fully effective SMS replacement application. I have spent countless hours trying different solutions to this issue and this seems to be the best most effective workaround I could find whilst dodging SMS replacement apps like handscent and chomp. It was imperative for me to not have my screen light up in my pocket as I choose to go without a lock screen. Hope this helps and is a worthy solution until some development ushers in a new more efficient solution. Cheers!
There's got to be a way using root privileges to stop this. Heck we can stop the annoying wifi pop ups.
Thanks srath16 for finding a hackish way around.

I completely understand now. That's. Cool. There got to be a more in house way of doing this, but that would work in the meantime. Thanks for sharing.
This happens to me also and im running on Verizon at the moment would love if someone could find a way to fix this.

+1. But maybe we are in the minority and others actually like this feature?

Right. This isn't an "issue", it's just a feature that Samsung has deployed that some like and some don't. Being able to turn it on and off though would be nice.

[Q] group texting help needed

I've searched and I've read threads, some of which are a bit older, and I've gotten to the point I need to be smart enough to ask for help.
I have a Droid Razr and my wife has the Razr M. We're on Verizon. We both currently use the Verizon Messages app and it's really ok for everyday messaging. However, about once or twice a month, my wife needs to send a group text to about 15 people. To do this in Verizon Messages, you have to add each recipient individually. If we can have contacts in Groups, why can't we just select a group?
Whatever.... maybe that horse is dead.
Is it worthwhile to install an app just for group texts? If yes, do you have a suggestion?
I want to avoid anything with ads because I hate them. I want to be sure I don't add something that will start causing double notifications and confusing things going on in the status bar. I'd also like to avoid having to sign up for a service. I just want to be able to send a group text and see the responses all in one thread (not separate ones).
Is there a reasonably simple way to do this? In one article I read there was mention that installing one of the 3rd party apps (like handcent or chomp) somehow enabled Verizon Messages to be able to select a group as recipient. I tried installing on my phone and didn't see that happening.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Oh and neither of the phones is rooted. They're both running 4.1.2 I believe. I know my Razr is.
There are a few SMS apps that support group messaging. The one that I always go back to is GoSMS Pro. I hate bloated apps, but you can manage to trim some of the fat off GoSMS through the menus of the app. Functionality wise, GoSMS works great.

Question SMS still not working right for US?

Hey all.
Just curious if anyone has found and workarounds for sms messages on US carriers?
I use T-Mobile and have the normal issue of the default messages app sending and receiving group messages as separate texts. This was eventually fixed on the Vivo X Fold but required an update from Vivo. I can change to another app like Google Messages but only the first text I send to someone works. After that, subsequent attempts give me the pop up asking me to send a payment request message.
Thanks.
*EDIT* So anyone else that needs this, enable developer mode and toggle on disable permission monitoring. I.didnt have to uninstall the stock messages app.
BRO, THANKYOU!
i searched everywhere for this answer!! you are a life saver truly!
