I was trying out CM7 nightlies but the bugs were overwhelming, and when I tried to restore my previous ROM through Clockworkmod it couldn't find the boot image. I rebooted and have been stuck on the Vibrant/Samsung startup screen ever since. Can anyone help?
Ur just gonna have to pull the battery and odin back to stock. Then root and flash cm 7 but dont forget to wipe

I agree. What was the ROM you tried to restore? was it a 2.3 gingerbread ROM as well as CM7? or was it a 2.2 ROM that you tried to restore while still running 2.3 CM7?

CM uses a different file system from other ROMs (MTD/yaffs2) which means your old ROM's kernel won' t be able to read the file systems on the phone. You need to Odin back to stock with a re-partition, re-root, re-install clockwork and re-flash.
There a sticky on how to use Odin, and how to get into download mode here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Search for "HOW DO I USE ODIN?!?!?!?!"
no harm no foul!
as soon as i saw the word 'kernel' here i knew what i'd done. i did try restoring back to gingerclone 2.2 while still running cm7. wah wah. but no harm, it was my girlfriend's phone and she's already back from tmo with a brand new galaxy s 4g. thanks for the replies fellas
Yesterday my Vibrant crashed and now I can't start messaging. When I try to, the screen goes black and after a few seconds, I get the message "the application Messaging (process com.Android.Mms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again", and then closes very quickly, before I have the chance to tap "force close". Any solution?

didnt restore messages from a different version did you, like 2.2.1 to 2.2 or 2.2 to 2.3
i did that coming from 2.2.1 and restored on 2.2 and my messaging force closed, if it is that reflashing would fix it
just a suggestion, better to have more than less
Yeah, thanks! However, I'm still working on getting clockworkmod to work, so I haven't flashed any roms. Yet.
So in other words I still have no idea what's going on haha

use rom mansger to flash it then reinstall packages twice in the stock blue recovery if you havent already
if you can't get CWR to work... then download a nightly, lastest or old doesn't matter i don't think message app has changed at all...
so anyways
download it.
extract apk from system/apps
and then replace on your phone..
just wondering... why are you still using stock messagning app? everyone i know has moved on to go sms pro or somthing else.
edit: oops why did i just assume u were using CM7 lol, anyways just replace the nightly up there with your rom, and do the same thing.
What do you mean, "the nightly"? (the nightly build? Of what?)
Also, I got my phone three days ago, so I still use stock messaging. If there's a better alternative, I'd love to get it. What do you guys suggest?

You can try Go SMS Pro from the market - it's really good.
Are you on the Samsung ROM? I thought you were on some other one, ignore the nightly parts...
have you done anything with your phone like flash other ROMs?
If not, there's an app called Bloater, if you search a bit on the themes / apps section you can find it, and then get the messaging app, im pretty sure it has it in there.
I'll try sms pro. I haven't used any other roms yet. I'm on the Samsung Rom. I've tried to flash clockworkmod, but it didn't work. I'll try bloated...

Strange... I tried go sms pro and handcent sms, and they both crashed in much the same way as stock messaging. I also got similar errors.

Well, now we know that its YOUR issue, but I'll try and help.
First of all, the stock Samsung ROM is very buggy, and will become laggy after a week or two, maybe a month.
So i suggest you switch to a 2.2, or a 2.3 rom.
We do not have OFFICIAL 2.3 from samsung so we are relying on Cyanogen, a team that makes AOSP (free of all touchwiz) ROMS called Cyanogen Mod, or CM7 as in version 7.
I'll get you started off by teaching you how to use ODIN. Odin is important in the world of flashing. ODIN will get your phone back from soft bricks, and sometimes, rarely, hard bricks- MAYBE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
that thread has most of the stuff you will need.
ignore the ROMS section and downwards, the thread hasn't been updated in a while...
Go into the Vibrant Dev. section and look at some ROMS that you like.
Gingerbread (2.3) roms do not have perfect battery life right now, but its getting to the point where its just as good as froyo.
You are on 2.1, very outdated, and since its touchwiz, it will get sooooooooooo laggy.
Root yourself with Superonelickroot program, and then get app ROM MANAGER and flash yourself a clockwork recovery, put a ROM on your phone, and then install.
First decide which ROM you want, because if it's a 2.2, it's different than 2.3.
Thats not the only thread, but I can't find the exact threads to help you out with right here...
First off, thank you so much for all that information. My phone is already rooted. I can't get clockworkmod to work, but I will try odin. CM7 was my Rom of choice in the first place, but before I'd flash it I'd like to get clockworkmod working so I can do a nandroid backup. While your here, do you know of any battery efficient roms that I can flash for when I'm travelling and such?

Battery efficent... hmm
If you're not in a hurry, I do suggest you try out CM7 WITH Glitch kernel, without it cm7 has bad battery, but i just tried it and its giving me pretty good.
If you travel frequently, Maybe Froyo 2.2 is best for you.
Now about your clockwork issue, whats the problem? any errors?
Get Rom Manager app from market
grant root access if it ever asks you.
top choice select it and then flash Vibrant CWR, BUT- AND BUT if you're going to try CM7 as I said, flash the Vibrant (MTD) their both there for choice.
It will download and flash by it self.
Now I hope you know how to get into recovery mode for now, because later on in every rom, theres a option you can just choose to get into recovery.
Anyways if you don't...
Hold up and down volume, and power button for about 5 seconds until phone turns on, and then let go, wait a few seconds and a recovery should pop up
press -REINSTALL PACKAGES-
this will replace normal recovery with the clcokwork
then after pressing reinstall packages, it will reboot back into recovery again, same screen, press reinstall packages again, now it wont reboot, but will go into a deeper version of recovery CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.
there you go, now thats what it is.
Now if you will flash CM7, go wipe the cache
and then ADVANCED > wipe dalvik cache
now install zip
install zip again or choose or something
and then find your rom and flash.
there you go.
After flashing a rom, let it sit for 10 minutes, it usually lets the ROM calm down and stop setting up and it works great.
You should let me know which rom you pick, if you want terrific battery, then its froyo for SURE.
I havent been on froyo in a while, but when i did, Trigger was my absolute favorite, if you can't choose, make a thread.
Wow havent typed that much in a while.
haha
Ok, i tried to install clockwork mod and I got the following error
"E:failed to verify whole-file signature

However, i found someone with a guide on how to use Odin. So I'm probably just going to use that, unless you know of a way to fix ClockworkMod.
Thanks again!
EDIT: Fixed the problem! I restored to stock firmware with odin, as i was getting a lot of problems. I'm now running Cyanogenmod 7.

are you on 2.2? because the stock 2.2 that Samsung gave was protected so you couldn't do the clockwork etc.
Yep, use the ODIN thread you found and odin back to 2.1, root using superoneclickroot, and then do what I said and then you can flash clockwork.
Long story short, my phone started acting up on me and the solution is to update to Gingerbread. I currently have my Ace recently unrooted and with the stock rom, and I've read everything so I don't mess up, but I'm stuck on several points.
I downloaded some Provider stock firmware. I really don't know which one is the right one, so I picked what my heart told me to: S5830XWKPU. There was nothing for latinamerican phones [I'm in Mexico] so I thought it wouldn't matter, since I'm going to get rid of it anyway and install, after the upgrade, CWM, and then CM7.
I'm following this guide, but first, I don't know if the firmware I chose is the correct one. And second, I can't find all the Boot, Phone, PDS and CSC files that I'm supposed to load in Odin, I just see 3 files, and the tar, that I assume is the actual firmware.
Then, once I manage to upgrade to 2.3.3, I want to install ClockWorkMod, via this tutorial. Would that be okay? I want CWM so I can then flash this version of CM7.
Are those steps I'm trying to follow the correct ones? And is that version of CM7 recommended?
In advance, thanks for reading and any information and help will be very appreciated.
Edit: I forgot.. is there a way to backup the current stock rom in my phone? Just in case I need it one day.
Edit 2: Okay, I got it before anyone could answer but I don't see where I can delete this thread.. now flashing 2.3.3 and hopefully it will all be fixed.
Listen if your firmware is 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 then you are good to go and I used odin only once but I think u have to extract tar file with winrar or 7 zip . After installing New firmware u have to root your phone again. After rooting flash cwm.
You are new u should use official cwm 4.0.0.9 (which is only official verison which supports ace) then just flash it.
After installing cwm install cm7 but before installing cm7 plzzzz
remember wipe factory resets/card partion and delvik cache.
These all options are in cwm.then immediately flash cm7.
Never ever intrupt anything first time it takes a lot of time even to reboot.
Yes you can backup your stock rom

Guys.. thanks for the guidance.
I've already rooted the phone. It's in POLISH. Thank God it's going to be rewritten.. CM7 is in English, right? So once I get CWM flashed [I'm on that right now], how do I flash CM7?
And there's one last thing. One very, VERY important thing. It seems that all this has been for nothing. The reasons I did this are because the camera stopped working, and the battery is getting drained in a couple of hours, and the phone is warm, hence something was making the processor run at max, but I didn't know what. Anyhow, in the Polish stock Gingerbread rom, the camera is still not working. It's frozen, EXACTLY like before. I'm on the verge of tears right now, this can't be happening D:
EDIT: Okay, I'm sorry, I'm just angry/sad.. CMW is invoked just like regular recovery, and that's how I flash CM7.. sorry for that.
First download cm7 kang build rc1
It is about 100 MB.put the zip file in your SD card donot extract it.reboot into cwm.using volume buttons for navigation and home button for selection first wipe the things I mentioned Above.now select install zip from sdcard.next choose from SD card.now choose the zip file u downloaded. Now choose yes install the............(rom name)wait until it is completed. Never interrupt it.after 10-30 mins it will ask you for reboot.select reboot now .on first time it takes some time on boot screen......

Regarding Titanium, the only thing that didn't work again was Swype. And the camera. But sadly, the problem that made me begin this quest was not solved, and in the end I'm going to have to replace my phone because the camera is gone for good. Unless anyone knows if it can be fixed, but I doubt it because it's pretty much 100% sure it's not a software issue.

i agree with consegregate. From what you described, i do feel the same way that your issue could be hardware related. In fact i believe that part number QCA01 is somehow burnt.
Yep. If by QCA01 you mean the camera's sensor, yeah, it's my suspicion too. Clayframes must have let it running, which caused it to burn.
I'm going to ask for a friend's Ace to backup his rom and flash it in mine so I can use my warranty.

Just a little perspective. A useful exploded view to see where QCA01 is located.
Something quite.. unexpected happened. The camera works. I didn't do anything, other than applying an update to CM7, but after that I tested the camera and it still didn't work. And that was 2 days ago I think.
Today, I accidentally opened the camera, and lo and behold.. it displayed an image. I took the photo, everything works like before. I installed more cameras [NOT YOU, CLAYFRAMES!] and they all seem to work. WTH?? What do I do now, keep it? Take it to my provider anyway? This is weird hehe

I assume thet the phone is rooted. You should flash a 2.2 Rom from the vibrant forum first. Bionix, Trigger etc. Once you flash a 2.2 froyo rom, it should be smooth. I like Zendroid located here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079517
If you can get into CWM you should be golden ..good luck
Haha Lapdog hit the Thanks instead of the Quote.
Ok then. Here us what you can do. Hit my signature and download CWR. Open the folder and put the Update.zip on her internal SD. Go here and download this ROM (Derange9). Put it on her internal SDcard.
Boot into recovery (either volume up AND down and power OR volume up + power [depending on whatever bootloader you have]). It will show up Blue.
Tab down to Reinstall Packages and hit it. It will cycle through and come back to the blue screen. Hit Reinstall Packages again and the recovery will go from blue (stock) to green (CWR).
Scroll down to Wipe cache, factory reset/data and advanced->wipe Dalvik. Then scroll to Install from SD and find the above ROM and flash it.
Once done Reboot and profit, you are on Deranged9. If you want to flash a different ROM, just replace D9 with whatever one you want. After it boots up and she is no longer pissed at you, you should get some kisses. Tell er' Wood sent you.
really she wants it to just be stock , it was ten times smoother when i got it then after i tried to put the lockscreens on it , is there any way i can get rid of the 2 bootloaders and just have one and have it be all stock

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I don't know what you mean by dual bootloader. You might want to Odin back to the froyo bootloader before installing a stock rom.
i mean when it first turns on you see it go through 2 bootloaders the froyo one and the gingerbread one First is Galaxy S i9000 logo , then Vibrant logo, finally is T-mobile bootscreen.
i would like to get it back to how it was where it only says the vibrant logo when loading then i would like to odin it to the most rexent stock version
like if i hook it up to samsung kies for vibrant that will fix it right ?
At least two of the recent hard-brickings I've read about recently have involved Kies. I wouldn't touch it. Odin or Heimdall for me.
Info about kb5:
http://duckduckgo.com/?q=t959uvkb5
I'm a little concerned about your initial "i9000". If there is any possibility you changed the SBL, you might want to Odin back to a stock Froyo SBL before loading kb5. Do it in the same session: uncheck "reboot" in Odin before loading the SBL, then after it loads, load kb5. Probably the initial "i9000" just means you somehow got an i9000 kernel.
I think you need to go back to odin3 flash the stock jfd to stock then go in phone dailer press *2767*3855# to format the system to wipe out the old folder then go back to odin3 again and flash the VIBRANT STOCK (FROYO) BOOTLOADER. I hope that help. I did have 2 bootloader like seeing i9000 and the Vibrant logo before

Kies won't fix anything. If you don't have much experience, use Heimdall One-Click. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278683
It will flash the stock bootloaders and the stock Vibrant ROM. It will be back to the way it was when you (or she) first got it.
Note: It won't let you flash bootloaders until you've flashed it once, so just reflash it with bootloaders checked. If it fails, just keep doing it. It will flash it eventually. I used this when I bricked my Vibrant.
