Well, first off, I FINALLY ROOTED !!!!!!.....samsung fascinate.I500...2.2.2.....edo5.........rooted with SIMPLE ONE CLICK.......... achieved SUPER USER........downloaded ROM MANAGER........however.......when i try to flash ANY rom, i get error msg " FAILED TO VERIFY WHOLE-LIFE SIGNATURE".....". SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED "....
"INSTALLATION ABORTED"
ANY IDEA WHY I GET THIS ?..........thanks.Dennis
Flashing or installing a recovery on a stock kernel gets reset at boot. You need to flash recovery (cwm) in odin with battery out, insert batt and 3 finger into recovery and flash a custom kernel to get recovery to stick.
good day.
???
hi, and thanks for reply........im sorry but im obviously newbie. can you give advice on how exactly i can acheive your suggestion ?.......i dont know what ODIN is or even how to do this
thanks
dennis
What exactly are you trying to flash? Or what rom are you looking to be on?
good day.
well, like i said, im newb, so i tried the ROM MANAGER app.......and it lists only a few ROMs. but any i try i get same error.
btw, i would like to be on Cynogen, or fresh
Don't really recommend Rom Manger...
-Download Odin.
-Download CWM4 fixed for CM7... HERE. (Bottom of JTs post)
-Copy the ROM you wish to use onto your SD card anywhere.
-Open Odin
-Phone off, remove the battery, hold down volume button, plug in USB cord
-Should go into download mode, shown on the screen of your phone, and show show up as connected in Odin.
-Using PDA Button (Never use phone button in ODIN!) flash the CWM4 for Odin file you downloaded. DON'T do anything until it says success, finished done, etc, just don't stop mid flash. Shouldn't take that long, and your phone should turn back off.
-Reinsert the battery, do the three finger recovery (DO NOT let the phone boot back up otherwise you'll need to reflash recovery)
-Choose install ROM from SD card, choose the rom, CM7 or whatever you downloaded, and flash it.
-Now that's going from memory, so it might not be exactly "install rom from sd card", I think it actually says "install .zip from sd card" or something like that but you get the idea.
- I would recommend backing up all your data, and then wiping cache, dalvik, and data before flashing a new ROM.
- If going to CM7, MIUI, OMGB OMFGB, VGB, etc, any 2.3 based rom you'll want to ODIN the GB_Bootloaders too.
Superoneclick has had problems on 2.2.2 ed05. If you odin the stock ed05 package from pentafive, you dont need to flash a modified kernal to get cwm to stick! Also there is no need to root if your installin a rom, it will already be rooted. My suggestion is to start with powerwashed 1.2 rom get familiar with what you are doing before messing around with mtd gingerbread roms.

If you don't have any clue what ODIN is, or what CWM is, or even how to spell Cyanogen correctly, you have no business at all even thinking about being on CyanogenMod 7. Have to learn to crawl before you can walk before you can run. Read the stickies, read the stickies again, read the stickies again, know what you are doing and understand what you are doing before doing anything to your phone, then start simple with a debloated/deodexed stock rom or powerwash ED05.
+1
There's no trick or magic or easy fix for rooting. Its all about experience. Once you've flashed 20 ROM's+...you'll understand!
I know that some of these are 150+ pages long, I KNOW...I've read them all! Trust me when I tell you, each page is money!
You've got an amazing machine, go read some of the ROM postings and learn the lingo, the steps, the problems and fixes. then root your fascinate.
You'll be glad you did.

So a buddy at my wrok got a new vibrant. I have a mts and a g1 and am familiar with rooting and all that. So of course seeing what I can do with my phone he wanted to root his and learn about android. So we rooted his phone and he was runing bionix 1.4 oc uv. He told me his phone died because his batery ran low. He then preceded to try and turn his phone on to make a quick call. Well it would only boot into recovery so he asked me to help. Him fix it. I took a look at his phone and I tried to turn it on and it goes strait from the vibrant screen to the standar blue recovery. He thot the phone mite not be reading the sd in recovery mode and only read the internal memory ,because he would push install update.zip like he would before to get into clockwork and it would just give an error. Well I eliminated the sd not readin question because in the error message ot says reading sdcard/update.zip. and since he has no update.zip its not loading anything. So can I just rename a rom zip from here name it update.zip and will it fix the problem,or do I need to put the clockwork update.zip on there. Or is there a nother way to fix it. Stock image?
lol yeah that would be me. i saw that one method to fix something like this was to use odin but everytime i try to download odin, ubuntu tells me that the archive type is not supported. i was using the link from the vibrant "bible". i dont really care if i have to go back to stock as long as i have a working phone.
**new knowledge... no odin for linux so far as i can find so if anyone has ideas using ubuntu then that would be great.
Lol this is who I'm helping^ hey we never tried just putting a rom on ur sd and renaming it to update.zip. take the latest bionix and rename it update.zip put it on ur sd and flash it
No voodoo lagfix? Cuz that complicates things

Ya I believe I installe jacs kernel with his lag fix. Can I just use odin to put his phone to stock and re root
careful
if you ran into the problem with the lagfix enabled flashing a rom over the ext4 partition might soft brick it. I ran into a similar problem the other day and was able to get my phone going again with the instructions from the bionix thread its titled Fix 1 in the last part of the OP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782027
this will get his phone back to stock for sure. but yeah you need ODIN
k amac10 used odin and now it will boot to the galaxy s screen then go black and stay that way but the buttons at the bottom of the screen will light up. but it still stays black. any body know a solution using linux since my windows vista part of my laptop crashed after an update and i'm fighting with windows on how to fix it. i've been trying to see if there was any software for ubuntu to do the same thing as odin. but no luck so far.
Using a windows machine w/ ODIN:
Flash "eugene's froyo that doesn't brick"
Then "JACs stock rom"
From there you should be back to out of the box status. All links & resources can be found in the "ROM bible" thread

Haha... Well put! My usual flash process:
-DL new ROMs @ night over wifi
-Wake up, read the early adaptors reviews
-flash ROM, brush teeth
-flash other goodies....
From here I'm usually good to go by the time I hop out the shower if all is well. If not:
-get eugenes froyo loaded, shower
-flash JACs stock nand, fix breakfast
-push /sdcard back in, eat
-go back to previous ROM, leave for work... Lol
I think that most ppl "freak" at first cause the initial setup is *****! GL to the OP, that should work though
I have been lurking for quite sometime and eventually got the courage to root my phone and try to flash a rom yesterday. I downloaded Bionix Fusion 1.2 to computer and copied over to internal memory. Used Rom Manager to install rom from sd card and it went through some steps and then gave a error message and installation failed. Tried to reboot and I ended up soft bricking my phone and using ODIN to restore stock back. I was so relieved. My question is can I use ODIN to flash any rom to my vibrant?
Thanks so much everyone for their wonderful contributions....
This isn't the Q&A Section, you'll find that here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=747
Thread moved to Q&A.
Flashing a ROM via clockwork is easy to do and the easiest way to do it. Did you make sure you flashed clockwork recovery in ROM manager first? If you did , download a different custom ROM say axura or r12 since onynx didn't work and see if that works as well.
Get this NOOB question out of here!!!!
Thanks for the warm invite...
To answer your question, no. Most roms are in zip format which can only be flashed through Clockwork. To be honest, flashing through CW is way easier than Odin and it doesn't wipe your SD card. You'll need to reinstall your apps, but that's it.
P.S. I'm sorry people flamed you. People forget we were all noobs once.
To answer the question
vinnydakid is basically correct.
But the question was can you use odin to load any rom.... yes if you have it in a .tar or other extension that odin recognizes + .pit file (of course). But since most roms are loading more than just the .tar-file it is way easier to use the clockworkmod. If you really run into problems then flashing back to stock first and then going from there will resolve most problems. You can check the stickys in the dev section they have all the info you would need if you ever run into a problem.
And............ +1 for vinnydakids statement.........people get too rude sometimes and forget we are here to help each other.
As long as it's a .tar file and make sure it's a Rom for vibrant
how do you know if your current kernel supports the ROM that u want to flash?? i used ODIN once to flash.. do i need to use it again? or can i just use clockwork recovery...
and how exactly do u flash using clockwork recovery??
rename the zip to update.zip and goto clockwork and click update?
Please read the sticky... I worked hard so people would not need to ask those questions.
EC01 must be old, right? Not so. I cannot give you the build date however, per request of...someone else. Its considerably newer than EC10, however. For some it may be hard to take my word for it, but I have never lied to anyone here.
In here you will find a new shiny radio, a voodoo or non voodoo EC10 kernel, courtesy of JT1134, and...a ROM!
No more hacking pieces together from other devices. No more crappy radios (hopefully). No more poor GPS (hopefully).
Please do not ask where it came from. I will not tell you. All file dates have been changed, the build.prop has been masked.
Please do not ask for an Odin. I will not give you one at this time.
Please enjoy yourself, I insist.
This ROM is ever so slightly tweaked. It is not a quality release by my standards (mostly because its stock). I recommend folks wait for the community rom to be finished. If you can't wait, by all means, flash away.
Does not include a kernel.
Debinged, browser included.
Debloated, yet contains most stock apps.
Custom boot animation, because I am not including the original kernel.
Dialer voicemail button points to Google Voice.
Your current kernel will be retained. So if you are using a Froyo kernel, you will be just fine.
Xoom boot animation because you will be using a custom boot animation supporting kernel.
Installation Instructions (read carefully)
---------------------------------------------------------
Make a nandroid backup.
Odin back to EB01 stock.
http://adbdev.com/danknub/CI500_VZW_EB01_FROYO_REL.tar.md5
Boot once, then Odin clockwork recovery.

Boot straight to clockwork recovery, and flash my kernel of choice from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003017
Boot once, convert to voodoo if need be.
Boot back to clockwork recovery and flash rom.
Boot once, then Odin the radio.
Please follow these directions. There are apparently some kernel/cwr issues that are causing boot loops. If you decide to flash another kernel afterwards, be my guest. Don't wipe, however. The above directions are after hours of testing by IRC folks, and I THANK all of them!!!!!

I was able to get times_infinity's comavolt voodoo to work, but only if I ODIN'd back to EB01 stock, then ODIN'd ec01 radio, ODIN 03/30 cwm fix, boot directly to recovery, flash ec01 rom, flash comavolt kernel, boot was successful. Going to play with it a bit tomorrow.......errr later today after I get some sleep.
Copied from my "Most Thorough Method of Fixing Every Problem You Might Have" section in the recovery thread, and adapted to this post.
This will wipe your data, btw, so be sure to backup any important info. You can make a nandroid backup, but you will probably have issues if you try to restore the data to use with this ROM.

The kernel of your choice
Step-by-Step Installation - Important!
ODIN the full stock EB01 package in PDA, the atlas_v2.2.pit in PIT, and "Re-Partition" checked
Let your phone fully boot into the OS and verify everything is working correctly
Remove your battery
ODIN the CWM Recovery package
Close odin, Unplug/replug the phone from USB, re-enter download mode, Re-open odin.
ODIN the modem
Unplug USB Cable, THEN reinsert your battery
Hold both of the volume keys and the power button down until a second after you see the Samsung boot logo, then let go
It should now boot into red CWM recovery
Wipe Cache only. Flash the ec10_rom.zip
Flash the kernel of your choice
Reboot. If you have installed a voodoo kernel, then you should hear a Sexy Robot lady telling you that she is converting your partitions. This process will take 10 minutes or so. If you pull the battery, you will have to start all over again.
Let your phone fully boot into the OS and verify everything is working correctly
I can't stress enough how important it is to check your files for the correct checksum to verify that your download did not get corrupted (you can also use it as a way to make sure you have the right version). Also, follow these instructions exactly. You could potentially be wasting your time and anyone else's who is trying to help you fix whatever random issue you might be having, merely because you didn't follow the instructions.
I've been scanning threads for news of this mystery drop since your first hint and just as I'm about to cash out for the night... OMFG! You f'ing rock mate! Now, if I can only find the strength to hold out for the community brain child... I know it will be worth the wait. Oh, but a tasty new radio sure sounds delicious right now!
Thanks again Adryn for everything you've done to make this phone great!

Usually in all the other phones that I have rooted and flashed sensation mt4g g2 g2x you root it then simply move on to CWM then you flash a recovery. It seems like the recovery isnt sticking..
I have looked for guides on how to flash. But a lot of them say there outdated.
Any ways if someone could give me a clue and point me in the right direction that would be lovely thanks!

Okay, listen carefully. Go to jt1134's CM7 thread in fascinate development section. Go to the first page, scroll down until you see CWM fixed for CM7, download it. Use Odin to flash full stock ED05 with atlas 2.2 pit file, check the box for repartition, then hit start. Boot up, then power down and take battery out. Flash the CWM fixed for cm7 in Odin, unplug from computer, put battery back in, then (this is important!) hold both volume buttons and the power button until you see Samsung logo, then release. You will then be in the right recovery to flash any MTD ROM. Wipe all three, flash ROM, reboot. Also go to stickies in fascinate development, read "Going from Vanilla GB to anything else" thread. It will give you more details and is properly updated. Good luck!

* How to get back to stock after flashing any rom, follow these steps:
Step 1: Download this stock ed05 rom package by pentafive to your pc. you will need to unzip with 7zip or winrar, http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...144787558901&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13175749481381
Step 2: power off phone and pull battery
Step 3: open odin on your computer
Step 4: plug in factory usb cable and hold the volume down button. Yellow
triangle should appear saying "download mode"
Step 5: click on PDA in odin and find the vzw_official ed05.tar file(rom) you downloaded to your computer in step 1
Step 6: click on PIT in Odin and select the atlas 2.2 pit, it's in the file you downloaded in step 1
Step 7: click start and wait 5min, box in left hand corner of odin will say PASS, then click reset.
Step 8: unplug usb cable, put battery back in and boot phone.
You are now back to stock ed05.(verizon's latest release for the Fascinate)

When I try and install a app it says insufficient storage on device.
Is this because I didnt install ec09-modem.tar.md5 and GBBootloaders.tar?
I know that im not going to need to install Gaps. But I want to make sure these things ^^ up there are the right things for my rom.
I went ahead and risked it haha. It worked. Okay so now.. It says that I dont have root. Would I be okay to use the superone click method again to root it?

Is Clock work going to stick? Do I need to install rom manager and flash the newest one?
I tried to go into CMW through long press home and click recovery. It says Multiple packages tries to request sytem root permission wich is disabled by default to ensure system security. If you need to enable it, please go to setting in super user.
Witch im not seeing anyting

The kernal is already modified to allow cwm to stick and you should already have the latest kernal with the version of miui that you flashed. Im not a fan of rom manager, but thats just my opinion. Fwiw the only other kernal I would mess with is the glitch kernal. That has to be installed via odin. go into the dev section and look up the glitch kernal thread and read up on it. But before you do any of that, just get the phone up and running for a day, then go from there.
Yeah haha I just need to get root so I can back up her stuff.
But its not letting me get into recovery because it says that I dont have root. How am i supposed to get into it?

If it won't let u get into cwm by long pressing power button then power phone off and try three finger into recovery(not suppose to do that with a mtd rom tho). Your only other option I know of is:
-odin back to stock
- boot up once then power off
-odin cwmall.tar from my guide
-three finger boot into recovery
-install root.zip from post 14
-reboot then power off
-odin cwm4
-three finger boot into recovery
-install miui.zip from sd
-reboot
-follow directions from step 8 on in the vanilla guide.
Hey guys.
I've searched the forums for this issue, unfortunately it seems like mine is a little unique and I can't find a solution to my problem anywhere.
I'm stuck in CWM Recovery mode, and although I can navigate the menu... when pressing the Home key to select the various options, nothing happens besides the options blinking for a sec. I can access Odin Mode with Power/Volume +/- but that's it. Also it's worth noting that I'm unable to access my phone's files from my computer when in download mode (my guess is because the phone isn't set to USB storage mode which I have to do from the booted home screen, which... I can't access).
This happened after the first time entering Recovery mode on CWM, and although I have ROM Manager installed on my phone, after researching a little I found that was NOT what I wanted to use. And I did NOT use that program.. my CWM was flashed in from a .tar on Odin (the windows program). I also have a Jellybam folder placed in the phone, which was my next step.
How can I get out of CWM Recovery so that I can continue flashing the Jellybam ROM?
I apologize if I've missed anything. Please let me know if you need any other information. I'll be sure to hit the thank you button on every reply.
THANK YOU!
:crying:
um....
you are supposed to flash the ROM from CWM, so why would you want to get out of CWM to get back into CWM?
you havent mentioned what version of Android you were already running or what kernel you flashed, but have you tried using the POWER button to select things in CWM? Are you sure you used the right kernel? Are you sure you have an i777?
Hey Pirateghost, thanks for the reply! And yes, I was going into CWM Recovery to flash the ROM. The reason I wanted out of CWM was because it had no functionality... yes, I did try using the power button to select things. Seems the home button was it? In any case nothing worked. My version of Android was Gingerbread UCKH7, and I'm %100 sure it's an i777. By using the "right kernel" you mean the right version of Jellybam?
UPDATE: I got out of the bootloop by using a stock root UCKH7 kernel, bringing it in from Odin. Now I'm just trying to understand what went wrong and how I can continue to flash my Jellybam ROM in without any issues. I also found that my CWM app disappeared after I uninstalled ROM Manager after getting access back to my phone.
More info...
the kernel I installed for CWM was KH4 at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
After putting the KH7 stock root kernel in via Odin and getting out of the bootloop, I deleted ROM Manager off my phone and reflashed the KH4 kernel so I could get CWM. That worked fine, but now Superuser is crashing.

The kernel you just linked above is for the GT-I9100, not the SGH-I777. You seem to be moving forward without providing yourself with enough knowledge. If you are sure the phone is an I777 then stay away from the I9100 forums. Get what you need from here. There is lots of information in the guides linked in my signature. There is enough information there to guide you through everything you want to do.

You are flashing an older kernel on a newer ROM??? why? if you want to have CMW recovery you should flash your stock rom and then get the CWM .tar file and flash it in Odin. If you happen to get a .zip CWM file you can rename it to update.zip and flash it using your stock ROM's recovery options.
Search something along these lines: CWM5.8.1.8-i777.zip or recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxys2att.tar as examples

WOW! I don't know how I missed that. Must pay more attention to detail...
Thank you so much for pointing that out Creepyncrawly!

It's great having new folks around helping out.
This is bad information, however. 3e recovery will enforce signature verification on any update.zip, and it will fail.

always a pleasure to lend a hand. you're right it used to work on 2e I think, I was trying to signify the difference between the zip and tar, but thank you so much for the correction.
So should I be using a different kernel? I'm sorry I'm not quite sure what you're saying Commodore64, my head has been spinning from all this.

you should be using a kernel intended for your phone....your phone (if branded AT&T) is either an i727 skyrocket or i777. this is the i777 forum section. you appear to have flashed a kernel for an i9100...
just follow creepy's guides and do it the right way. there is nothing you can flash in STOCK recovery that will give you CWM or a new kernel (which on this phone CWM is packed with the kernel)

There is not just one answer, you can go back to one of the stock ROMs, like the ones provided by creepyncrawly threads.
There are a lot of threads on this and I don't have my I777 anymore but I used to do this:
1- Once you flashed a stock rom, go into recovery and cleanup. data/cache reset.
2- Have the files you want to flash on your phone. (if you format the SD card you will erase your files including the ones you want to flash!)
3- Use your .tar Odin CWM that worked for you before now to flash CWM.
4- Once in the CWM flash a newer CWM version (CWM6.0.1.0-i777.zip) since your ROM is based on CM/AOKP
5- After flash Go to Advanced and reboot recovery (this will reboot your phone now with the newer version of CWM)
6- Once in the newer CWM clean up again.
7- Don't reboot, have the correct version (latest or whatever) of your Custom ROM and install it now.
This is the general idea, if you don't know what you're doing read the threads in the development section, everything you need is there.

this makes no sense, dude.
1. if he is on a stock rom, there is nothing CM/AOKP on his phone
2. on this device the recovery is packed with the kernel, flashing some other CWM doesnt really matter at all. none of this is necessary.
you can flash any kernel you want (made for this device) if you dont plan on booting the OS and only plan on flashing a rom...
you have now complicated an already easy method.
Hey everyone - just wanted to let you guys know that I am now running JellyBAM and so far everything seems fine.
Thank you all for your help, seriously. If anyone has any questions about what I did etc., just ask and I'll get back to ya.
Thanks! :good:
Glad to hear you got JellyBAM up and running xargis, and just to reiterate what pirateghost was saying, you won't get CWM by flashing a CWM.tar file lol, I don't even think one can be found for this model (SGH-i777) which is the device that I currently have, the ONLY way to get CWM onto this device is to flash the proper kernel for this device, but keep in mind that there is another factor to think about as well, depending on what type of custom rom you want to run there are different kernels out there that work best and offer different/better features for deployment into the custom rom for which you will be running, in other words some roms are kernel specific, you can only use certain kernels with CM10/AOKP/ParanoidAndroid based roms, and such is the same with only using certain kernels with Sammy based stock roms, so the choice is yours, hope this info was informative to you and that you definately find a good productive rom that you will be happy to play with and run, have fun with your i777 s2, that's one of the things this forum is all about!!
