Stuck in CWM Recovery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys.
I've searched the forums for this issue, unfortunately it seems like mine is a little unique and I can't find a solution to my problem anywhere.
I'm stuck in CWM Recovery mode, and although I can navigate the menu... when pressing the Home key to select the various options, nothing happens besides the options blinking for a sec. I can access Odin Mode with Power/Volume +/- but that's it. Also it's worth noting that I'm unable to access my phone's files from my computer when in download mode (my guess is because the phone isn't set to USB storage mode which I have to do from the booted home screen, which... I can't access).
This happened after the first time entering Recovery mode on CWM, and although I have ROM Manager installed on my phone, after researching a little I found that was NOT what I wanted to use. And I did NOT use that program.. my CWM was flashed in from a .tar on Odin (the windows program). I also have a Jellybam folder placed in the phone, which was my next step.
How can I get out of CWM Recovery so that I can continue flashing the Jellybam ROM?
I apologize if I've missed anything. Please let me know if you need any other information. I'll be sure to hit the thank you button on every reply.
THANK YOU!
:crying:

um....
you are supposed to flash the ROM from CWM, so why would you want to get out of CWM to get back into CWM?
you havent mentioned what version of Android you were already running or what kernel you flashed, but have you tried using the POWER button to select things in CWM? Are you sure you used the right kernel? Are you sure you have an i777?

Hey Pirateghost, thanks for the reply! And yes, I was going into CWM Recovery to flash the ROM. The reason I wanted out of CWM was because it had no functionality... yes, I did try using the power button to select things. Seems the home button was it? In any case nothing worked. My version of Android was Gingerbread UCKH7, and I'm %100 sure it's an i777. By using the "right kernel" you mean the right version of Jellybam?
UPDATE: I got out of the bootloop by using a stock root UCKH7 kernel, bringing it in from Odin. Now I'm just trying to understand what went wrong and how I can continue to flash my Jellybam ROM in without any issues. I also found that my CWM app disappeared after I uninstalled ROM Manager after getting access back to my phone.

More info...
the kernel I installed for CWM was KH4 at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
After putting the KH7 stock root kernel in via Odin and getting out of the bootloop, I deleted ROM Manager off my phone and reflashed the KH4 kernel so I could get CWM. That worked fine, but now Superuser is crashing.

The kernel you just linked above is for the GT-I9100, not the SGH-I777. You seem to be moving forward without providing yourself with enough knowledge. If you are sure the phone is an I777 then stay away from the I9100 forums. Get what you need from here. There is lots of information in the guides linked in my signature. There is enough information there to guide you through everything you want to do.

You are flashing an older kernel on a newer ROM??? why? if you want to have CMW recovery you should flash your stock rom and then get the CWM .tar file and flash it in Odin. If you happen to get a .zip CWM file you can rename it to update.zip and flash it using your stock ROM's recovery options.
Search something along these lines: CWM5.8.1.8-i777.zip or recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxys2att.tar as examples

WOW! I don't know how I missed that. Must pay more attention to detail...
Thank you so much for pointing that out Creepyncrawly!

It's great having new folks around helping out.
This is bad information, however. 3e recovery will enforce signature verification on any update.zip, and it will fail.

always a pleasure to lend a hand. you're right it used to work on 2e I think, I was trying to signify the difference between the zip and tar, but thank you so much for the correction.

So should I be using a different kernel? I'm sorry I'm not quite sure what you're saying Commodore64, my head has been spinning from all this.

you should be using a kernel intended for your phone....your phone (if branded AT&T) is either an i727 skyrocket or i777. this is the i777 forum section. you appear to have flashed a kernel for an i9100...
just follow creepy's guides and do it the right way. there is nothing you can flash in STOCK recovery that will give you CWM or a new kernel (which on this phone CWM is packed with the kernel)

There is not just one answer, you can go back to one of the stock ROMs, like the ones provided by creepyncrawly threads.
There are a lot of threads on this and I don't have my I777 anymore but I used to do this:
1- Once you flashed a stock rom, go into recovery and cleanup. data/cache reset.
2- Have the files you want to flash on your phone. (if you format the SD card you will erase your files including the ones you want to flash!)
3- Use your .tar Odin CWM that worked for you before now to flash CWM.
4- Once in the CWM flash a newer CWM version (CWM6.0.1.0-i777.zip) since your ROM is based on CM/AOKP
5- After flash Go to Advanced and reboot recovery (this will reboot your phone now with the newer version of CWM)
6- Once in the newer CWM clean up again.
7- Don't reboot, have the correct version (latest or whatever) of your Custom ROM and install it now.
This is the general idea, if you don't know what you're doing read the threads in the development section, everything you need is there.
Educate yourself before you make your phone a crippled rabbit and scream for help.

this makes no sense, dude.
1. if he is on a stock rom, there is nothing CM/AOKP on his phone
2. on this device the recovery is packed with the kernel, flashing some other CWM doesnt really matter at all. none of this is necessary.
you can flash any kernel you want (made for this device) if you dont plan on booting the OS and only plan on flashing a rom...
you have now complicated an already easy method.

Hey everyone - just wanted to let you guys know that I am now running JellyBAM and so far everything seems fine.
Thank you all for your help, seriously. If anyone has any questions about what I did etc., just ask and I'll get back to ya.
Thanks! :good:

Glad to hear you got JellyBAM up and running xargis, and just to reiterate what pirateghost was saying, you won't get CWM by flashing a CWM.tar file lol, I don't even think one can be found for this model (SGH-i777) which is the device that I currently have, the ONLY way to get CWM onto this device is to flash the proper kernel for this device, but keep in mind that there is another factor to think about as well, depending on what type of custom rom you want to run there are different kernels out there that work best and offer different/better features for deployment into the custom rom for which you will be running, in other words some roms are kernel specific, you can only use certain kernels with CM10/AOKP/ParanoidAndroid based roms, and such is the same with only using certain kernels with Sammy based stock roms, so the choice is yours, hope this info was informative to you and that you definately find a good productive rom that you will be happy to play with and run, have fun with your i777 s2, that's one of the things this forum is all about!!

[Q] Big problem with ROMS

Hey,
Ive been searching for 6 hours now and i still haven't found the solution to my problem.
My problem:
Today i got my Samsung Galaxy S2, so i wanted to put a custom ROM on it using this guide: http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/.
Firstly i rooter my phone without a problem. After that i followed the guide. This was no problem untill i had to: 'Launch ROM Manager and tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and pick Samsung Galaxy S II from the list of compatible smartphones.' There was an error in recovery mode about verification.
After this i flashed my phone with clockworkMod-Recover to be able to put of verification. When i toggled it off i tried to update my phone to CM7 wich was on my sd card.
When i tried rebooting now it was stuck on loading screen with the well-known yelolow triangle.
I tried everything (including: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499 -> did everything perfectly). I tried to flash other stuff. But still same problem i wiped it a lot, still nothing.
I can acces download and recovery mode without any problems. i even flashed the phone to the stock kernel (Kernel_I9100XWKI4). so now i dont have a yellow triangle but still stuck at boot screen.
I am desperate and depressed that my expensive phone wont boot up. Can anyone please help me out i'm even willing to pay the one who helps me out.
Thanks in advance!

Tried this a lot, doesnt fix it.
1) Get the right CF Kernel from the Chainfire kernel thread in the Android Original Development Thread. Extract the zip to get a TAR and extract the TAR to get a z-image file. Also download the corresponding original stock kernel from the Intratech thread in the same section.
2) Flash the TAR in PDA using Odin. Do not click repartition. This lets you boot with with functional Root and CWM.
3) If you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, then load the z-image file into /sdcard. Reboot into download mode and use Odin to flash the stock kernel (again in the PDA without repartition). After that, go to the CWM app, choose flash kernel and locate the zimage and proceed.
NB: You can read Chainfire and Intratechs threads in case I was vague somewhere.
Installing CM
1) After all this, put the latest nightly into /sdcard
2) Boot into recovery.
3) Clear Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache (in advanced). Go to install Zip-->Choose Zip from SD card--> Choose the CM7 nightyl file.
4) Flash is twice i.e consecutively. The first time, it just takes like a second to flash, the second time will be the complete install. No idea why this happens or whether its been fixed now.
5) Reboot.
The next time, dont google for this type of Info. The XDA forums has everything you need and a good search engine too.
Let me know if you still have issues.
Cheers.
EDIT: RomManager works best on CM7 only. I suggest that you keep it that way. It does not work with the basic stock rooted CF Kernels as is mentioned on his thread.

I allready get stuck on the first thing, i flashed the CF kernel with Odin and after this he wont boot so i cant procede. This is my problem he just doesnt wanna boot.
I dont want any custom ROM's anymore i just want the default phone back. This is a disaster.
Did you choose the right CF Kernel. It has to be chosen to be inline with the Kernel version that came with your phone. As you've not managed to flash a modded kernel, you will still be on the same kernel that came along with you phone. You cant choose any CF Kernel that you like.
You've mentioned Kernel_I9100XWKI4. Is this the same that came with the phone or did you pick some random kernel?
Another option is to try that android recovery, but Im not familiar with it and its options.
I had the same issue as you when I was playing around with cutom kernels and CWM

Yes that is the original one (I9100XWKI4). I am also not familiar with android recovery.
Ok, if its KI4, then theres a Ki4 for Gingerbread 2.3.4 and another for 2.3.5. You have to choose the right one

I tried both, none worked :s
Then I think its best that you head over to Intratechs thread, a new firmware itself and flash it over. As you say KI4, download XWKI4 2.3.4, both the OXX multi CSC and the stock kernel and reflash your whole firmware as per the instructions in the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Also make sure that Samsung Kies is not running anywhere. Kill it in processes and do not let it boot in msconfig.

None required mate. If you are still interested in rooting, follow the instructions Id mentioned in my first post using the CF KI4 Kernel for 2.3.4 and you should be fine.
As an alternative custom rom to CM7, check out GingerMod, I can vouch for it.

Rom manager is not fully functional on the SGSII. In particular, you can not use recovery through Rom Manager. To gain ClockworkMod Recovery, you must install a custom kernel containing CWM Recovery.
You can install a kernel with Odin3, Heimdall, adb, Android Terminal Emulator, or Mobile Odin Lite. If you use Odin3 or Heimdall, this will increment the flash counter. Adb, Terminal and Mobile Odin Lite will not increment the flash counter. If you need specific guidance, look at the FAQ in sticky section of the General forum, or follow the Guide linked in my signature. (I havn't added Mobile Odin Lite to the guide yet, but it's a pretty easy option. If you download it from Chainfires thread, it is free. If you get the pro version from the market there is a small charge.)
You can't boot into recovery through rommanager. You should do the three button boot (press power+volup/down) once you do that you will be able to flash roms without any issue.

You can't flash roms from stock 3e recovery, so unless there is a custom kernel installed on the phone you will not be able to flash roms.
I'll definitely cast a vote for Mobil Odin. I flashed Entropy 512's latest kernal through the Pro version, and it took less than 10 seconds!

Yes. I looked at his video again. The video is bad, very blurry, but it does look like he has ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.3 installed, not 3e recovery. So your directions would be good in that case.
BYW, I believe that stock 3e recovery is also blue text. It's been a while since I booted into 3e recovery though.

Download Mobile Odin Lite from Chainfires OP to your pc, move MobileODINLite-v1.25.apk into the same directory where you have adb.exe, and use adb to install it with:
Code:
adb install MobileODINLite-v1.25.apk
You do not need to try to install the add-on (flashkernel). You don't need it to flash a kernel, but you do need it if you want to flash a rom. When I tried it out this weekend, it would not download the flashkernel, so after I installed the kernel, I deleted Mobile Odin Lite.

Hello again. I haven't tried anything yet time is not permitting me to but I did install a custom kernel when I first rooted. This is the method I used if I haven't posted the link up yet. Its from zedomax on his you tube channel. I did it step by step. I was even able to make backups no problem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-2Z2dKsuio&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Creep? I'm on my lunch break reading your other threads and what not... and I saw someone write press power / up and down buttons to get to cwm recovery ... but then I saw someone say release the power button when you see the yellow triangle.
So I did that and was in recovery 5.0.2.3 and attempted to flash cyanogen that I had stored in the phone...... the first attempt took two seconds so I remember on another post people had said to flash it again so I did. It took maybe 10 seconds this time.
I restarted.. and was joyed to see the cyanogen boot screen but was saddened to see it was caught in a boot loop. Would keep restarting and doing the bootup screen. Wouldn't pass that part so I had to do a restore .. any idea what I may be doing wrong..?
I attached a screen shot of my "about phone" thank u thank you everyone
I really can't help with installing CM7. I've never installed it myself.
From what I see, your were on stock with zedomax kernel and CWM 5.0.2.3, which as far as I know meets the requirements to be ready to flash CM7. Maybe someone with more experience can help you.

From what I see, your were on stock with zedomax kernel and CWM 5.0.2.3, which as far as I know meets the requirements to be ready to flash CM7. Maybe someone with more experience can help you.

Thanks creepy. Just out of curiosity do you have a Tom installed? If so then which? I would like to try your rom and see.

flashing new rom

I would like to flash a new rom. i am currently rooted. I would like to be able to use the nfc feature, as well have jellybean installed. i was looking at using this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574718. it mentions cwm. is this ok to install on my phone? also, any guidance with this would be great!
Yes its fine

Add long as your phone is an i777, you follow the instructions on the OP, and you re-wipe and flash before asking about something messing up... Yes.
I would also recommend flashing aokp 7.3 ICS, then flashing the JB ROM. It seems to be helpful.

Our phones have a recovery built into the kernel so make sure not to try and flash anything with Rom Manager.

If you start off using any custom ROM, especially the AOKP, I do suggest you spend time read more, follow that thread (the link you provided), the more you read the more you save time and avoid headache down the road. One example that Phalanx just pointed out, it isn't listed anywhere but from reading and following that thread.
1. Make sure your device is i777, if anything other than that, stop.
2. Make sure you have the CwM Recovery installed. Do get along with the buttons such what home button does, what power button does. It depends on the CwMR version.
3. Follow the instruction of the ROM for installation.
4. Good luck and enjoy.
I have cwm installed, and I select the option in the app to reboot into recovery. it reboots, and goes into recovery mode. the only problem is, is that it is the android system recovery. I do not see an option for backup there.

Luckily you don't have CWM installed yet using Rom Manager what you have is Rom Manager....
1. Uninstall Rom Manager ASOP
2. You need to flash a custom kernel to get CWM you can do that be installing Mobile Odin lite free from XDA and flashing a kernel...
3. You need to read LOTS more or you risk BRICKING your phone......
4. It will depend what ROM your on now what kernel you need to flash to get CWM Gingerbread = GB kernel ICS = ICS kernel PLEASE read before doing ANYTHING............
5. Go to this link and READ 3a. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18576627#post18576627

I will help you get this working, I have some questions tho to get you the right info when you see this respond back just don't do anything till
I help you.... I would rather help you then have you brick your phone but of course do whatever you want.... You can DL and install these 2 files just like any other apk install MobileODINLite first then FlashKernel I777 of course you will need to be rooted, this wont change anything on your phone it will just install the app to get you ready to flash the zImage... The next step is KEY as to what you're running now.... That's where I have questions...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xxf4c4tvevh1gnx/MobileODINLite-v3.25.apk Here is a link to the latest release from my dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5q4b5tkmxsdx0e1/Mobile ODIN FlashKernel I777.apk FlashKernel I777
EDIT I will be around here for about 3 hours it's 6:40am now on the west coast after that it will be like 10 hours...
got it. why does odin need my location?
also, it says that odin required an add-on to be able to flash firmwares on the device (i think i just figured it out... was that the second thing i installed?).
thanks for your help! i appreciate it.

I'm not sure why the location permission BUT it is built by 1 of the best devs on here ChainFire nothing to worrie about....
the second file was the add-on, when you load mobile odin is it saying you need to install the add-on? Now you need to flash the zImage to get CWM if you haven't already....What firmware are you on now? I feel dumb telling to flash the 2nd file you only need the Odin lite to flash the zImage (kernel) to get CWM once you flash a new ROM in CWM you will lose all the data anyways... Now that you have um back them up and save them so when you flash a new ROM you can reinstall both of them!! Always good to have IMO...

I have installed both apks. zimage has to do with the bootup, right? where do i get that file? would the firmware be i777ucle5?
@sniper8752,
You seem to be flailing around in the dark. You really need to not only read, but also see how things fit together. Just a friendly warning, if you don't know what a zImage is, or why you are flashing it, or which zImage to use, you still need to do some more reading and get a better overall picture before you continue with flashing JellyBean.
The zImage is the kernel. (Don't forget to capitalize the I as linux is case sensitive.) I am assuming you are rooted but do not have ClockworkMod Recovery installed yet. You need to install a custom kernel that matches your system. That means flash a Gingerbread kernel if you currently have a Gingerbread system, or an ICS kernel if you currently have an ICS system. The various options for the kernels are available in the development section. To use a zImage with mobile odin, you must extract the zImage from the .zip file (or sometimes .tar) that the developer makes available. Mobile odin can actually pull the kernel from a tar file, but it will not recognize a zip file.

I have decided on flashing this rom: http://ultimatum.us/. looks like it will take about an hour to download... i currently have ics installed. to flash the zImage, do I click on "Kernel" in the app.?
thanks for help and explaining the zImage. what would be the best way to learn all of this? is there a good site so I don't have to go looking around everywhere? maybe like a beginner's guide?

What app? There is no app...
ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) yes, app NO.
EDIT: Just realized you may be talking about mobile Odin our three cwm app. Don't use either at this print, much easier using CWM (reboot into recovery of you've got a custom ROM/kernel)

[Q] Is there anyway to flash a kernel from recovery?

Noob here,
Originally i was trying just to root my phone. I didn't want to flash any roms or anything like that just root it so i can get rid of the bloatware, and so after much reading i found that the only way to do it on ICS required a method that might have a bricking bug. Well i went for it anyway, did it successfully. All was well, saw the superuser icon, purchased mobile odin pro did the whole bit. It seemed to be working great. Then i had to immediately change kernels since the stock kernel seems to be the culprit with the whole bricking bug situation. Alrighty, well i went and did that sort of successfully? I chose Siyah since thats what most people in the thread chose. Flashed it with mobile odin pro then it got stuck on boot. After more research i figured out where i went wrong, apparently the first link to the siyah kernel was a CWM/jb kernel or some such situation. I apparently should have downloaded the one further down. My fault for being so quick to try to get it all over with. Now my issue now is i'm stuck at boot, Is it possible to somehow flash the zimage of the proper kernel from the recovery menu? Or would i need to flash a tar file or zip file? would that still work if i used a brand new sdcard or would it have had to have been installed previously? Any help or guidance would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Good job doing all the reading you did. Sorry this happened If the jellybean kernel flashed and went to reboot you should have CWM recovery!!! If you download the 4.3.3 ICS no mic swap kernel Yes you can transfer the kernel to a microSD card from your PC with the adapter then insert it in the phone and then flash it in CWM install zip from Sdcard. You can transfer it from your PC to your phone using CWM, and flash the .zip I have never done this so I cant give you detailed info how to do it but I hope some one cool will help you with that if you need it. All you need to do is flash the ICS kernel in CWM and you will be good to go!! Worse case flash the stock rooted ICS package again in Odin and it will flash the stock ICS kernel with the firmware again then flash the right ICS Kernel in Mobile Odin .... GL
http://www.mediafire.com/?39q3t5yjsgj66cb Link to the right ICS kernel.

Unable to install CM recovery or TWRP

Sir, I have 4.1.2 AT&T ROM OM MY I777. Problem is that I am unable to install CM recovery via ROM manager that says "error occurred during installation". Goo manager shows no TWRP for this. When I install via 6.0.1.0 ZIP after booting in recovery mode. The CM recovery gets install byt when I flash ROM stable cm 10.1.3 it says install aborted STATUS 7. I have done back by using CM recovery which installs temporary after boot mode installation from ZIP which is working fine. Did all as per instruction many time but of no use. Please tell how to install CM-recovery and via ROM manager or to remove STATUS 7 error.

This is the reason you're having trouble. There are hundreds of posts in this forum (and a sticky) regarding the dangers of using Rom Manager on this phone. Most things just don't work well on it, ESPECIALLY installing recovery!
Don't know which AT&T rom you're on, but you've flashed recovery without changing the kernel and that could be why you're getting the Status 7; CWM is included in our kernels, so you would have only needed to have flashed the kernel.
There are a few things you'll need:
Mobile Odin, the. tar version of Ktonnez's old siyah kernel (you can search, it'll be in the OP of that thread), and a copy of AJK 4.9 AOSP.
Flash the old siyah .tar first, reboot into recovery. From there you'll have CWM and be able to flash the 4.2.2 rom you want. If for some reason you still get the install aborted error, flash AJK and be certain to follow the install instructions for that as well, it's also in AJ's OP.
Finally, please stay away from Rom Manager! While some things may work OK there's an extremely high chance of destroying your device by using it.
regarding the use of ROM manager on the i777: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824419

-framroot for root
-mobile odin uses root to install a compatible kernel
-reboot to recovery to flash the desired firmware.
