Ok so I unlocked a coworkers evo3d via the htc method only because he had updated his device to 2.08, and hboot 1.50 is not supported by revolutionary yet.
I can't figure out how to install a recovery. I've tried both TWRP and CWM. First I tried, via the PG86IMG.zip from TWRP but that didn't work saying something about it being a older version. Then I decided to try to push it via fastboot? I successfully push both TWRP and CWM recovery but when I went into recovery the phone would just reboot and boot into the OS.
Can anyone please point me to where I can get step by step instructions on how to install a recovery? This is possible right? Or how else are people suppose to install customer roms via HTC method.
I used both these threads as reference guides but I couldn't figure it out.

Once the device has S-off (rooted) you can download the TWRP zip file from one of those links you posted and place it on the root of your SD card named as "PG86IMG" do not include the .zip in the name since it is already a .zip file. Once on your SD card and properly named pull your battery out, pop it back in and hold vol down + power button to boot into the bootloader. Once it the bootloader it should auto detect the PG86IMG file and ask you if you want to update. Select "Yes", when done and it asks you to reboot say "no" and then boot into recovery from the bootloader. You should then have TWRP installed this is how I did it and its worked everytime for my friends and I. Hope that helps.
I tried that first and it kept telling me "Main Version is Older" then error and pressing Ok would reboot the device.
When you say you tried to push via fastboot are you saying you flashed via fastboot? As in you booted into fastboot usb, opened a command prompt and entered
Code:
fastboot flash recovery TWRPorCWM.img
because otherwise all you did is push (copy) the file to the phone.
I think the version of your hboot is not correct you need to flash the Eng Hboot Zip first!
Basically rename the Eng Hboot zip as PG86IMG place it on your SD card and update it in bootloader.
When done reboot phone and then remove that file and place the twrp zip file on your sd card, rename
it to PG86IMG and go into bootlader and then update that zip file. When done reboot into revoery and you should
be okay.
Twrp doesn't work without s-off, which you don't get from HTC unlock. Use cwm version 4.014 or something like that

Trying it right now. When I rename the Eng Boot to PG86IMG.zip and boot into bootloader, it reads it and says parsing zip but then it goes away and then im just on the bootloader screen.

So was your phone on software version 2.08.651.2 when you successfully used revolutionary? What recovery are you using? Ive read that cwm has some issues on evo 3g/3d
This may be totally off base, but I recall from rooting the Eris that with jcase's one click method you would get a custom recovery and permanent root and the ability to flash custom ROMs from that recovery, but still had S-ON.
Have you tried running Fre3vo to gain temp root, then flashing CWM recovery from the ROM Manager app running on your phone?
If that doesn't work, reports are from AndroidForums that this CWM.img which I could trace to XDA Recognized Developer graffixnyc but no further, can be flashed via fastboot. Personally I'd rather do it through ROM Manager if you can, then you can also get updates.

There is no support in revolutionary for 2.08 build yet (1.50 hboot). He probably used it before the update. HTC unlocked the bootloader & you can write to certain partitions, but no flashing kernels or anything else they don't want you to. If I was dumb enough to take the update or if I just got my Evo 3d and it was already updated I would wait for alpharevx and unrevoked to make revolutionary compatible with the update, which they are said to be working on.

There are definitely a few options and a few things to be aware of.
HTC official unlock does NOT unlock kernel/boot write access while in the custom recovery mode. Still is helpful to flash the custom recovery as all other features will work from recovery mode, just not the ability to write to the kernel/boot partition.
This means there are only two modes you can flash the kernel from, either fastboot mode (requiring a computer) or standard Android mode, for which I made a handy application, Flash Image GUI.
1) Using my application, Flash Image GUI, will allow you to flash custom kernels and also select ROM .zip files, and then load the kernel out of the ROM .zip, while then booting into recovery mode to load the rest of the ROM (system portion). My application will also allow you to flash the recovery.img or any .zip file containing the recovery .img.
2) Using the fastboot mode there are two ways to flash a kernel, both require being connected to another device, generally a computer.
2-A) fastboot boot c:\downloads\recovery.img . This command will temporary load the custom recovery with write access to the kernel partition and allow a full kernel .zip or ROM .zip to be loaded correctly.
2-B) fastboot boot c:\downloads\boot.img . This command will flash just the kernel boot.img file. The associated kernel modules, such as WiFi will not be loaded and must be loaded by the ROM .zip in the custom recovery, otherwise WiFi will not work.
HTC unlock is definitely very helpf when compared to no official option, but has a few quirks forcing us to take a few extra steps.
Hope that helps clarify a bit!
I have tried this & it says "main version older" idk what that means but it didn't work!

This is gonna sound retarted man sorry just need to know does your hboot say unlocked at the top?
I know alot of folks were having issues when they applied the unlock code bin part using the HTC Dev way and it would say sucess but nothing would happen the phone would sit in hboot and no new screen would come up and say do you wish to unlock the bootloader.... Only way around that was to download the latest RUU exe 2.17 and use it then reapply the unlock code bin
I am trying to figure out why TWRP 2.0 was havin issues along with CWM and so I I have been swapping recoverys around on my phone all day to see if I could get the same issue you have been having...
I am running outta ideas since everything isn't wanting to flash over it's acting like the boot is still locked even tho you unlocked it.
Im hboot 1.5 S-ON
If nothing works you could try this then redo the custom recovery.. by fastboot flash.

Might be able too. PC86IMG.ZIP I just can't figure out why nothing is flashin over to your phone recovery wise...
I did the same thing took the OTA software update before I rooted and did the HTC DEV applied the unlock code and chose to unlock boot even tho said it could void my warranty. Then I downloaded TWRP 2.0 which I don't recommend using put that in my platform tools folder and fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or what ever you renamed the file tooo.
This is the recovery I was using worked fine just copy the file that is in the zip to your platform tools folder and fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
I really am tryin to figure out what is going wrong with the recoverys not wanting to flash over....
I dunno why cwm isn't flashing right..

I am really tryin to figure this out lol.
When you did the HTC Dev method you had latest java JDK and HTC sync 3.0 I think was the latest and ADB and the tools it needs downloaded...
Also you don't have two pc86img.zip files on your SD card right?
Some of the PC86IMG.ZIP files might error or not work due to them being named PC86IMG.ZIP.ZIP
Does the computer you were using have ADB installed on it with the tools you can download when you open up SDK manager there called SDK tools or platform tools...
Since you need these to work adb and make sure debug is on in the main menu of your phone under applications development.
I dunno why superusers wouldn't flash either.. Might be something with ADB or SDK tools or Platform tools aren't downloaded. On windows 7 if your right click on your platform tools while holding down shift it will open up a quick path to adb
The stock recovery I used astro zip to zip the stock signed recovery.img. It was named stock signed recovery.zip when I zipped it. Then I renamed it to PG86IMG.zip & powered off phone. I went to bootloader & it found the file like before, said "parsing" & nothing else happens but it goes back to the bootloader highlighting fastboot. I did this several times by clicking on fastboot & then clicking bootloader so it can load the file again. Still it said "parsing" & nothing else. Like before, the only one that said something different was twrp which said "main version outdated" & the only option after that was to reboot using power button!
Also, I'm not near a computer & the super user I downloaded is from the market! I'm on hboot 1.5 unlocked WITH software 2.17. Do you think it's because the ota?

Ok, I have been reading all day and have noticed alot of new Evo 3d's being sold at sprint stores with the 1.40 h-boot. I noticed because I was one of the lucky ones to get one today!
There is alot of information on this forum, almost to a fault, because most of it is for 1.50 h-boot phones. I am pretty new to rooting, so be gentle.
So, here is what I would like to accomplish with my root.
My confusion lies it the area of recovery. I have read a few guides on here and this one seems to be the one I keep coming back to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196131&highlight=guide
I know I need to do Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery tool. Part of this process involves downloading and installing Clockwork Mod Recovery (CMR).
Then the guide tells me to install another recovery, Team Win custom recovery Project (TWRP) + Eng H-boot.
Now, the recovery I would like to use is 4ext Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560279
So, am I flashing 3 different recovery's? Or, do I just flash the 4ext instead of the CMR/TWRP?
My endgame is to flash MeanROM which is a 2.17.651.5 base firmware. But, my phone has a 2.3.3 firmware on it (kernel 2.6.35.10, build# 1.13.651.7), so I will have to upgrade my firmware to the newer version, correct?
Any help or steps to get me started would be awesome!
TIA
Root that bad boy with unrevoked just Google search it.

You may have to use cwm or TWRP temporarily in order to flash SuperUser to gain root access. The 4ext updater app will flash 4ext for you, I just can't remember if it requires su access but I believe it does. Switching recoveries is easy pezy... Don't sweat it man.
And yes you will want to update tour firmware via BOOTLOADER. Freeza has an all in one firmware update package that works nice.

CWM 4.0 works like a champ
Have a look at Closeone's downgrade tool thread , Post #3 specifically, and start at step 23 since you have Hboot 1.40 & already have fw 1.13.651.7. At the end of it ate some additional resources for 2.17 rooted Roms & the radio update.
Basically run revolutionary for s-off, install any recovery (4ext or cwm 4.0.1.4 recommended), run xhausx's 2.17.651.7 radio only update, format system data & cache (or superwipe), flash MeanRom.

In that eng hboot guide you should do up to step 5 to get s-off & cwm recovery v4.0.1.4. Yes, u need HTC drivers & usb debugging enabled.
You don't need eng Hboot, Revolutionary will install a fully working hboot 1.40.0011. You can try that one out later if u need more advanced options.
After the radio update, If you want 4ext Recovery, you have to boot the OS, and install the android app which will install the actual recovery, replacing Cwm if you loaded it when asked by Revolutionary's process.

There really isn't a need to flash Su since it's included in MeanRom (you can if you want it included in a backup).

Ya, I did the SU so I could have a clean stock, rooted nand backup.
Everything went smooth as butter! Phone is running MeanROM and very fast. It is a clean stock rom. I'm diggin' it.
I didn't notice any beats audio menu or any way to see if it's actually there even? Is it just there and ya dont see it? I see dsp manager baked in...
Well, anyways, thanks for all the help! I'm up and running all thanks to the help here!
Peace
Thanks grim! Yes, I did the feeya all in 1 radio update from bootloader. Easy as pie!

It's there when you play music inside the HTC Music app, won't work with Bluetooth though (see recent post in MeanRom thread). Ziggy kernel (default in current meanrom) doesn't have 100% Beats even though most "Beats Features" are a part of the Rom. Chad Goodman's kernel, Anthrax RLS8 Final, has Full beats support (if you can tell the difference).
I have a completely stock 3D with hboot 1.5, s-on, software 2.17. I want to gain root access in order to flash custom roms and such.
I saw a walk through on how to do this via HTCdev bootloader. I've also read about downgrading to hboot 1.4 and achieving s-off.
What are the advantages of downgrading to 1.4 and achieving s-off vs. sticking with 1.5 and s-on by using the HTCdev method?
Well fort you want be registered as having messed with your device to prevent a void in your warranty. The others are you can flash without any programs needed to install a kernel also you can flash splash screens. Flashing radios is also a benefit of soff. But soff will allow you to actually brick your device vs having just bootloader unlocked.

So s-off is going to give me more access. Essentially the better option if I'm willing to take the risk?
Everything I've read about downgrading to 1.4 and getting s-off is via Linux... Is there a way to do this from Windows 7 instead?

not yet...windows devices will not recognize the eMMC in the device...only linux does it,... which is not hard...just download a usb version of linux...run it from your flash drive and it works just fine....did it with my puter successfully ...and yes it is better...like you said though...IF youre willing to take the risk

Keep this in mind... S-off is great but you can fully permabrick your device with s-off, hard to do but it can be done. S-on blows but I'm pretty sure you can fix anything but a hardware failure with the unbrick method.

If I might suggest, take a look at the CD in my signature. There is a guide in post #3. It should help to ease the process a bit.

I'm willing to take the risk. I've done a lot of reading and my roommate is familiar with what he's doing.
Now, I just have to wait for him to come home... I'm tired of waiting, I just want it to be done already!

You don't need to achieve root access to flash ROMs or kernels.....unlocking your bootloader via HTC dev or revolutionary is just fine
My vote to hboot 1.4 S-OFF

Since my roommate is doing it for me (his computers and computer knowledge are way more capable than mine) I let him decide which way he was going to do it. We ended up going with the HTC bootloader unlock.
We got it successfully unlocked through the bootloader but it still doesn't have root access. Like, apps that require root won't work and he can't get anything to flash on it. Suggestions?

Do you have a custom recovery installed on it after you rooted htc dev method? Also did you flash superusers on it?

I think he's trying to get a custom recovery on it now (twrp). And he's mentioned something about superuser.
But he seems frustrated like something went wrong :-/

Thank you so much! That is awesome! I really appreciate you getting those all in one place for me.
I finally have root access and am currently running infected rom eternity and am super stoked!
reaper24 - Thank you for your input as well. I got the cwm 4... my roommate just tried to do something by going to one of the newer versions... Whatever it was he was trying to do didn't work and he went back to 4, so I'll definitely be sticking with that for now.
Next order of business... unlocking my friends' phone. She got hers in January (preloaded with hboot1.5 and 2.17). Can't get it to unlock via HTC bootloader unlock. I did read that there is a problem getting the newer ones that shipped with the updated software to unlock. I understand you need the 2.08 RUU. I found an active link and downloaded the file... Now what do I do with the thing?
Where did you find the working ruu I need one. I honestly think you just rename it to pg86img put it on the root of your sd card and hold down vol down and power. Once it loads into bootloafer it will scan the file and ask you if you want to flash it over.

If her phone has 2.17 then you can't run the 2.08. You need to run the 2.17 and then you can unlock it. I had to do that too.
For those of you going for the HTC Unlock (vs downgrade) i think maany of your questions & detailed walkthru can be found in the guide in my signature.

I am S-Off with AmonRa 3.15 Unlocked, Rooted and have the GB Stock Sense.
Things seemed a lot simpler with the DInc. Load the RUU on the SD, change the name zip and boot it from the boot loader.
From what I am reading, I have to flash the newest leaked ROM, then install AmonRa 3.15 again, then load the radios?
Doesn't sound or seem right and I know I will end up screwing something up.
Can someone give me a step by step instruction on this? Do I have to name each file PH98IMG.zip, install it then delete it and load another to install?
I am not understanding it.
Lmao wtf ?
Grab the ruu file, rename it to ph98img.zip and put on root of sdcard. Itll update firmware, rom, radios in one shot. Then you reinstall aromra and why are you s off and unlocked ? Point of soff is to be locked and still be rooted. I think you probably misread some threads wrong but good luck, hope i helped
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Btw if your unlocked, you cant run the ruu i believe. Better relock first .
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I know I did. I thought I had to unlock to root so I did. There are so many variations of the update threads going around. S-On, S-Off, S-On, Unlocked, Rooted. I can't keep this crap straight. That is why I am asking.
Thank you
i suggest reading this thread to get a better idea of everything involved.
but yes, phones change and evolve. they're not all the same, so you gotta roll with it.
If you're s-off I don't think you'll have to relock. But it's a total wipe of the phone, so you'll have to reinstall Amon Ra. You'll lose everything except your external SD card.
Back up your internal SD, and anything you care about.
Put the RUU on your external SD named as PH98IMG.zip. MD5 it *after* you put it on the SD card to ensure a perfect transfer.
Shut off phone, pull battery. Put battery in.
Start bootloader with volume and power keys. Everything's automatic from there. Volume up to say Yes when prompted. Process restarts automatically if the RUU has to flash your HBOOT.
On first boot, go straight to the SD card and rename that PH98IMG.zip file so you don't lock yourself out of recovery.
Now shut down and do the battery thing again.
Start bootloader and do the factory system reset/wipe. This is your last and only chance to fix any corruption in the radio partition, and you need to do this before flashing Amon Ra. You'll see the recovery screen and a progress bar that just twirls. When done the phone reboots automatically.
You may now shut down and install Amon Ra. In my experience, the phone will remain unlocked, and you can flash from fastboot if you prefer.
I haven't tried rooting the leak from Amon Ra because I usually just apply a rooted ROM from this point.
Be careful what ROMs you apply, because some ROMs may "upgrade" your kernel to an older version. In my limited experience, the one on the RUU is the best one.
Well, this changed me to Sense 3.5 software number 2.01.605.11 I downloaded Scott's Stock Rooted RUU 3.14.605.5 LOL!
Told you **** never works right when I do it.

You don't need to relock, you just need the right file. Scott's rooted 3.14 is a ROM, not the RUU. You need the actual RUU. The name of his thread is a little confusing as it is based on the newest leaked RUU but is not bootloader flashable via the PH98IMG.zip method. Get the real RUU and follow the excellent instructions above.
The PH98IMG in that post is not the full RUU and is only for the special case that he outlines in the first post under "install instructions".

Got it. Couldn't install under HBOOT. Had to do it under recovery and couldn't use the PH98IMG file name. Just left Scott's as named in the download.

Sent from my Dinc... I mean Rezound
Hi guys.
It's 2 days already I am trying to do s-off for my evo 3d. Maybe anyone got "up to date" thread where I can do this? My hboot is 1.49.0018, and GSM phone.
Because thread using hex and revolutionary method is out of date, and the main file PG86IMG.zip is no longer uploaded there.
Juopunutbear method requires stock RUU, but when I download from http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/?developer=Shooter this version: RUU_SHOOTER_U_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.28.401.1_Radio_11.77.3504.00U_11.25.3504.06_M_release_262714_signed.zip I get wrong zip file when flashing. Name was too big for 4ext, but when I shorten name it's gives error.
Any ideas? :crying: Thanks..
EDIT: Got S-off, but have no root now..
You can't flash that through 4ext. You need to rename to PG86IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card. Then reboot into the bootloader and when it asks to update, hit volume up to say yes.
Make sure when you boot back up to delete the file from the sd card.
I believe your bootloader needs to be relocked before running the ruu as well.
fastboot oem lock
Personally I have seen many evo V users get s-off just by being on a stock based rom. Because there was no ruu available to them they went as close to stock as possible. Probably best to just follow the instructions though if you have that option.
Thanks Brian. Actually I did just like you said, but apparently that RUU version had 1.53.0007 hboot, so now I am on stock RUU with 1.53.0007 hboot.
Gonna try juopunutbear method first if I manage to install linux first haha.
Good luck! It's not too hard to make the live dvd/usb. There is a program you can download that will set it all up for you if you go to the ubuntu website. They have all the instructions for a live ubuntu dvd/usb.
So I finally made S-off using wire trick But got new problem so gonna ask here..
I am still on stock RUU, and I installed 4ext using Play store, but it's not working cause it says I need root. I installed busybox and SuperSu, but SuperSu won't work, it says: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU can not install it, This is a problem!
I had root before I know for sure.. Also I can't go into recovery from bootloader because recovery does not exist. Can I flash 4ext through the bootloader renaming it PG86IMG.zip or it's not how it works?
Just downloaded several "root checker" apps, and all of them says I have no root access.
Thanks!
Edit: my hboot is 1.53.7777 now if that matters.
Edit2. I am on stock ROM, maybe that's why it does not work..?
EDIT: I've fixed everything, thanks.
Sorry, was asleep but glad to see you got it! I'm assuming you had to flash Super user to get the binaries installed? The app is just an interface.
