[Q] what droid to buy? its costing me nothing :):) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all.
well, after a long time debating with vodafail (my phone company) in reguards to reception issues that i am having, they have decided to give, yes give me another phone.
basically, the story is this.
i started on three, with a N97 (worst mistake i ever made) then, switched to voda under the belief that all me reception dramas would be gone, and that my n97 supports all the network bands voda uses, and i will for a long time. fast forward a few months with constant reception problems and, then voda told me that the n97 doesn't support their networks etc... so they gave me a HTC Desire HD (how very nice). and told me that it supported all their networks, and the new ones they were rolling out.... well, that was a lie. and im still having problems, even after i have rooted it, and upgraded the radios, i call htc to ask if the aus version of the dhd made for vodafone, supports the 8503g network (their current rollout) and they said no. so i rang voda up again, and after much debate, this is where i am...
at another free phone.
so, i need some help with the selection of it. below is a list of manufactures that vodafone stock and sell, and basically i want to know either the best sideways or upgrade move there is from the dhd, out of the list of supported manufactures.
the list is thus:
HTC
Apple (not keen on an iphone at all)
Nokia (not keen on Nokia after that N97 P.O.S)
Samsung
Sony Ericson
BlackBerry (dont realy like the look, but am open to looking)
Alcatel (never heard of them)
i would ike a galaxy s2 but apparently there is some issues with the screen or something (unless thats been rectified)
and the only pre-requisit over the dhd i would like, is a better day-time viewing screen. the dhd is a pain to read outside. but thats not a necessity.
so, there it is. any phone is available to me for free, so whats the best.
Cheers
Jbates58

umm, honestly this is a huge question completely redirected by WHAT phones they actually offer. HTC and Samsung have some BADASS phones right now so if you can get the Sensation Or SGS II id choose one of those.

There's your choice right there
Swyped from HTC Desire S using XDA Premium

Every phone manufacturer got their specialities.
Example that htc with htc sense,
sony with their facebook inside, and better camera.
Out there got many variety of phone to choose form. To choose what u needed,i think u go to gsmarena and use advance search to fit ur need. And read the phone review there.
Have a nice day to choose ur phone...
P/s:
I Buy HTC Desire Z is to fit my demand on typing, facebook, and nice camera editing.
And install Mytouch4g slide rom that have improved image captured.

Well the desire z docent support 850 3g. So its out. Are there any problems with the gs2? And are they hardware or software, and fixable by rooting and flashing a new rom?

Good phone. high specs. but it's down to YOUR buget... do you want a expensive hih end phone? or will a phone at a cheaper price do?
Just got the SGS II. Had an S I before. SII is amazing. No lag on any games. Quadrant scores are 3500 plus or 4000 plus if you over clock it.
Its fast smooth with excellent functionality

These threads amuse me. Here's 5 phones, pick one. And asking in the SGS2 section no less. That's like asking a bunch of Mac owners if they should buy a Mac or a PC.
Clearly you're open to a new carrier because you're choosing between 5 phones. If you had to stay with a specific carrier, that already cuts your choices down to 2 or 3 since the SGS2 and Sony handsets don't support the same 3G bands as the HTCs. Your country will factor in as well since launch availability, pricing, and local carrier discounts will incentivize some phones over others.
Those are just some of the considerations that don't even have anything to do with the phones themselves. Of those 5 choices, how many here have had 20 minutes hands-on with more than 2 of them? I haven't. Most of the opinions here will likely come from hours of aggregating editorial reviews. While those are valuable in their own way, asking a forum pales in comparison to doing that research on your own. Also, you can bet that almost no one here has played with a Sensation yet.
OP, I don't mean to be a douche but nobody here will offer a more meaningful opinion than one you could come up with on your own.

If you want a future proof phone say atleast for a year or two..
then the SGS 2 and Sensation are your best bet..
SGS2- you will be able to root and make sure you have the latest software thansk to XDA
Sensation - will not be able to root yet (locked bootloader) until some brilliant XDA members manages to crack it
I am considering the Sensation as I feel I hopefully wouldn't need to root it for atleast a year or two by which time somebody might have cracked its boot loader
The milestone has been out almost 2 years and the bootloader is still not cracked

I can get a high end phone price isnt a issue just need a phone which can last for a year or two, should be durable i am not a fan of rooting devices so i dont really need that until it is necessary to meet the techonolgy in shape of updates.
Sony phones look like toys with good feature, HTC looks solid, i have Samsung Wave at the moment though it has great features but the Bada OS which is not cracked yet, so i want to try Android now.
So far by reading reviews, user comments, watching videos i have found SGSII best but on the other hand there are people complaining about battery, sound, lag, reboots etc etc which is really confusing.
Note: I am from Pakistan so contract thing doesnt work here, i will get a Sim Free phone by paying full price of it thats why it is really necessary to do a research and ask for guidance.
How about the Google Nexus S (made by Samsung).
Always reqcieved the latest Android updates straight from Google.
Very stable.
NFC reader.
Many Custom ROMs.
Identical hardware to the Samsugn Galaxy S i9000 (4" AMOLED i9020, or sLCD i9023)
The phone feels like a phone in your hands.
No lag unlike the Samsung i9000.
About 350 Euros last time I checked.
handtec.co.uk post internationally.
Sadly, no microSD card, no FM Radio. Lacks some hardware enabled codecs for video, but still plays most and can play other formats using software decoding.
The hardware of Nexus S isnt outdated ? I guess most of the future applications will support dualcore phones.
Have mine for two days now and I must say this one of the best phones I got my hands on.
Battery life is amazing. Camera it's amazing.samsung's email client and screen is fantastic.
And 1.2ghz dual prossessor is so so fast.. Can't even compare to htc vision oc 1.8ghz cm7.

We get it, your battery life sucks. Take a look at your apps, because the majority of users say the battery life is great. I've done no tweaking except freezing a few hubs, everything still syncs in the background and I'm sitting on 92% now, unplugged at 7am this morning. (It's now 2:20pm here.)
I just got my sgs2, my previous phone was a desire but I miss htc sense already. But I am hoping someone will port sense to the sgs2 soon there already is a mostly working port for the sgs1

HTC will unlock bootloader ? Did you buy the wrong phone ?

HTC will unlock there bootloader, now with that info do you regret buying the SGS2 if that was your main reason for buying it ? and will you sell the SGS2 for a HTC Phone ?

Nope
Sense horrible .
jje
In short...NO
The bootloader however is still locked on the Sensation the only other phone at the moment I would consider, and after playing with it I still prefer the Galaxy.
Lol at this thread, have HTC said anything about unlocking kernels, recovery or radio.... no, so until then I am still planning on getting the sgs2 and most probably never buying anything HTC again.

Coming from Desire, had other samsung phones than sgs2 too, htc is much worse in mic and speaker quality just as in cam and screen, so I dont really care about its bootloader, the rest sucks...

Oh dear GOD no! And for so many other reasons..
I've never really felt the problems of the HTC Bootloader.. I had a HTC Desire HD, and it ran smoothly - after installing CM7, that was!
But the feel of the phone was all wrong. Too heavy, too thick..
After returning to Samsung with the Galaxy S II (I had the SGS I before hitting the HTC DHD), I can't believe I ever tried over the HTC.. The overall-feel is just so much better on the Samsungs..
- oh, and in my opinion, HTC has never mad a phone just slightly goodlooking. It's all really rubbish in my eyes..

Having Sense is nonsense. Just bloatware you that cant be deleted.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
they say that they won't lock bootloaders in THE FUTURE, they didn't say it's retroactive, so i think the sensation will still ship with a locked one
After playing with the Sensation I have no desire to own it. I'll stick to the SGS II.
@ OP:
No one cares.
ARE U kidding me?Don't u know samsung has released source code of sgsii for a long time?
Buying SGSII is mostly for its freaking hardware,sap,1.2ghz dual core, huge ram...i know some of guys are not satisfied with the gpu,but it's still much better than the any htcphones by now.
Frankly,I have no faith in Qualcomm‘s dual core, such as 8260 or 8660 that HTC used.
I think,in the dual core generation, the reason to buy htc is just for its sense
I'm someone who hasn't got into rooting/cracking yet and the GSII is still the clear winner.
Hardware, you are stuck with - Software can we changed and upgraded.
At least I know that the GSII won't be obselete at the release of the GSIII (or Hercules) or whatever the next big flagship phone.
Na. I compared both sets of stats side by side and the sg2 stood out for me hands down.

I`d buy the Sensation if it came out with unlocked bootloader.
I guess I would have gone for the sensation if the bootloader hadn't been locked but I ll stick with the sgs2 for now but I really do miss sense a lot.
HTC's have such washed out screens and slow pixel response (except the Nexus One) I could never go back (was a MT4G owner for a bit). Tinny earpiece and speaker too (ALL of them).
Also they all get dust under the screen eventually, I like that samsung seals the glass to the screen.
One star *

THIS is my biggest thing w/ HTC phone. Most of them just feel heavy. I personally love the plastic construction of the SGS2. It's very light but very solid feeling.
And I still have my theory regarding the aluminum phones of HTC impeding the signal strength... 2 HTC phones that I've tried w/ aluminum housing (Nexus One and Desire Z) had crappy reception in my office on 3G networks. Two plastic phones (Atrix and now SGS2) have great 3G reception in my office.
Don't care much of eyecandy sensation. As others said it's bloatware and too slow.
Like the clean interface of SGS2.

I think HTC Sensation would be the best choice.
I also wanted to.mention that which of them can best handle high definition mkv files ???
Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk
Considering none of those phones have an hd resolution let alone 1080, it would be a waste of battery power and storage space to play this type of file. If you can, rip the videos to the native resolution of the phone and you won't have any issues playing videos on any of those devices.

1. Optimus 2X- You should go for this since it is an excellent device. It's graphic benchmark scores are the one of the highest to this date. It has a fast tegra 2 dual core processor, fine resolution, a lot of customizations (via custom roms), and much more. The only cons for this device is it's appearance - I'm sure you can live with that.
2. HTC Sensation- The problem is with the firmware. Some of the most famous issue with the sensation is 1). Sense screen hangs on some incoming calls making you unable to receive call and 2). The sense restart. Root your phone and install a custom Rom else take it to the service centre to flash the firmware and everything will be fine.
Let's go on the other point of Sensation.
Now there are few food things to mention first about HTC sensation.:
Wonderful user interface.
Very smooth browsing.
Good virtual keyboard.
Very good WiFi speed, and 3g is also pretty fast.
Very easy to handle, perfect in shape... Not took big, but best in size.
Bright interface.
Now let's talk about the negative aspects:
RAM should have been 1gb, but is slightly lesser, but doesn't matter too much.
Very bad loud speaker quality.
Front camera is vga, should have been atleast 2mp.
No video calling facility. But video calling can be done using software like SkyPE.
Sometimes the HTC sense UI crashes when using some heavy applications.
3. Motorola Atrix 2
I dont have a Atrix 2 but people are facing little bit problems with this phone.
Over all you can pick up the phone as per your choice.

I agree I think that the LG is the best of these phones. Personally I don't like sense and htc overall because of their bootloaders and other stuff but LG is just fine. It's easy to root and load up custom roms. I also have an LG and those are the reasons I took it instead of htc wildfire. I also think its faster and the LG doesn't have the infamous sense fc.

Must it be out of these three?
1. Optimus 2X will only be getting ICS in Q3 after just getting Gingerbread 2.3.4 in Nov last year.
2. HTC Sensation has been notoriously known to have unresponsive touch screen and a palm death grip. Not all Sensations, but quite significant amount and probability. Like my only one friend that owns one, and his house mate..
3. Motorola only just recently updated its ICS plans for their devices and Atrix 2 is getting ICS in Q3 as well and other than that I do not know much about its goods and bads.
What I want to suggest is, why not consider a Galaxy S2? At least, the international version GT-I9100? Because it has already gotten ICS and the dev support is huge therefore it is easy to root and have the latest firmwares (mainly also because Samsung did not lock its bootloader like HTC).
p.s. I wanted to post links to support what I said but I couldn't because I have not posted enough yet..

Hi have you read my reply yet? I realised we posted at the same time..
I would advise against an LG phone, they are notoriously poor quality. Maybe they have improved in recent years, but I know they did have a bad reputation and the LG I had for a while wasn't excellent. Some functions stopped working within days of getting the phone and would only work again after doing a factory reset and then it would only be a few days again. And occasionally it would randomly refuse to send or receive texts.
But maybe they have improved?

Idk I have used my LG Optimus Me for about 5 months on stock before loading up CM7.2 Everything worked flawlessly and perfect. I never had go restart it or do anything to fix it. It just...worked So I would go for the LG. The only bad side was their customer support. I sent them a email regarding software updates. They said my phone will get upgrade. Two months later they said that it won't. And they won't give source codes for our device and their reluctance to do so gets on my nerves since it holds up development. But maybe its just because back then my Me was a mid-range device.

I think having CM7.2 work flawlessly on your Optimus ME is all thanks to the Cyanogenmod team, not LG. And like you said, what LG is doing is holding up the development of their devices, unlike Samsung.
So if the OP can also consider getting a Galaxy S2, that will be great

Not exactly CM team but still not tanks to LG. But I think you misunderstood me. Stock Froyo was working perfectly. I went to CM for a bigger version of Android and more features. It is true however that LG holds up development but only of custom roms.

Well if the difference of the Galaxy S2 is too much then I would suggest Sensation because its dev support seems to be better than the other 2. Plus the international version of Sensation has already gotten its ICS update as well. So it has many ROMs available and also supported by the latest MIUI 4 if not CM9.

It all depends on the price range! How much are you willing to spend?
If you don't give some details about your needs then nobody can answer your question!
IMO, Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Motorola have the best smartphones at the moment.
It's all personal preference. I'd recommend that you go into your local phone store and try a few different phones out from Samsung and HTC so you can form your own opinions.

ok!!! IS samsung galaxy not good? is good diea too sell my sensation and buy a note????
There are too many variables to just say what best phone is do you want screen quality, reception, speed, hi, etc. I work for at&t and every phone has its key points. I personally wont own another phone without swype text. Samsung had best screen quality and good reception, fast processors, HTC is good in a lot of areas also, engadget says its fastest phone they ha e tested but that is common on newest device. They dont have best reception though. At least on our network. Check out reviews from reputable websites. And of course if you root and customize you can turn any decent phone into best for you.

I actually own the Note. Be careful mate, if you go for the Note there is no turning back. Many smartphones out other, many choices. With the Note the difference is not on the performance, the advantage is the SCREEN. Its the best I've laid hands on, no way I can be satisfied with another divorce again. Even s3 is "small" in my palm right now!
Now seriously, go for it, you won't regret it!

If you don't want to make the uber leap to the note I can vouch for the galaxy Nexus as the best device I've ever owned. And since its a nexus you'll be more likely to get the latest software releases . Happy choosing

Actually this how u choose a smartphone..... first you need to choose the best phone... the fastest and those which last long... second choose a phone that consumes lesser battery... lesser battery use will make phones last long... and lastly choose the cheapest but the best phone......... GOOD LUCK

It gets hot, that's true (and kinda strange.... )
The camera isn't that bad (and absolutely enough for the use you're gonna do of it, e.g. posting photos on FB)
If you are looking for similar sized phones you can consider the GSIII Mini, considering the fact that it hasn't got Sense customization, and for a HTC user it can be kinda disappointing (I used to have a Wildfire S, when I bought a Xperia go I was so disappointed of sony customized UI that I replaced it with the Desire X)
Just a thing... please improve your english..

I'd recommend it if you can get it for £180.
However if you're willing to go for a few quid extra I'd go for the GSIII Mini or a little bit more than that you could get a Nexus 4...
As Matyt said, the device gets hot and it gets pretty annoying and unpleasant.
We have received updates for this device, and most users now have a Jelly Bean update.
Moreover our device gets the Linux 3.4 kernel with Jelly Bean meaning we'll be able to run the next few releases of Android on our phone whether it's officially or unofficially.
We have lots of progress on the AOSP ROMs front as well, with CM9 almost fully working and CM10.1 in the works.
In terms of developer support, you can't go wrong with the DX
Thanks for your advice im geting more tempted to get the desire x now do you think there is a way to fix the overheating and do yuou think this could shorten its life?
once i again....
if you dont have too much money and want a nice - cool , fast phone...not in a shoe size...you better buy it!!!!
it gets hot but not in critical points....
for the money you will pay you will get a very good phone
and lately a lot of developers are working on our phone...so we will get jb roms aosp and others..which will make our phone twice faster
from what you ask...this phone suits you!! A LOTTT

thanks for all your help nice to see a bunch of friendy guys who know what there talking about who can give real advice
mine doesnt over heat until i play an intense 3d game. and that happens to all the midrange phones i know of. Its only major compromise is on:
- no front camera
- no digital compass
- no 720p video recording (although playback is possible)
But dont forget the positive things:
- fast processor
- Good camera lens and low light snapshots
- HTC Sense (although lite version)
- Ram is higher
- Screen colour reproduciton is v good. (although not very bright)
- HTC Sense
- JellyBean (Upcoming in some regions - Damn you HTC)
- Light and beautiful design.
I agree with neXus PRIME. I havent had the issue of the phone overheating.
The phone is absolutely amazing in my honest opinion. Except for the front camera and htc full sense. Although i would advice you to check this link regarding the white noise (hiss sound) on some of our Desire X.
But that has never annoyed me at all as i barely noticed it. And after some search on Google, the white noise seems to be a problem or some kind of sacrifice introduced on almost all mobile devices to compensate and even out other weird sounds. I think there is a video regarding this which is on one of the pages on that link thread.
There is nothing else to disregard Desire X as an awesome and handy and comfortable device for those of us keen on getting a quality phone within a budget.
And once again if you want to compensate for all the con points neXus PRIME has first mentioned in the above thread, then by all means buy a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini.
I have come from a Wildfire to the Desire x.
The perfect move.
The DX camera is 10x netter than the Wildfire
I am glad i Made the move.

It important that you are 100% happy with your purchase...my advice go with your heart.
the Desire X is a nice phone has everything that you need and will receive updates for at least 4.X(not sure about official but surely unofficially).
about the heating that can usually happen due to prolonged usage at high frequency of the processor(our default governor is performance hence the reason slow down scaling and rapid fire upscaling).
this can be fixed by moving to interactive governor(better ratio of scaling) or/and changing the scaling governor to conservative.
though this problem might persist if you play games/use apps that have a high processor demand(usually very graphic intensive).
there so my suggestion is to look for a device that has the following points.
1.confirmed jb update(this gives it a better chance of getting 4.x future updates).
2.Strong developer comunity.
3.possible working method for rooting.
4.custom recoveries.
5.good specs vs price ratio.
for me the Desire X ticks all these boxes.
but in the end the choice is yours.
Good Luck,
Dark Passenger
The phone is far better with the JB update, from my own anecdotal experience. I was unhappy with it on ICS. I'm still not impressed with Sense Lite that we were burdend with, and had I known about it at the time I would have opted for another device.
There are many positives about the phone, it is very cheap and it works OK for the price. If I had more money I would go for a Nexus 4 though.
The other reviews above are good, but I'd add in the actual handset is not very comfortable in your hands, especially for extended periods, and the screen feels less responsive than the one on the old Desire (Bravo). It is very plasticy and the back cover feels very cheapo and fragile.
It's a grand Android phone, it costs next to nothing (comparatively) but the performance is fairly low end and there's an air of cheapness to the whole thing. My Nexus 4, GS3 and other devices feel far superior (though to be fair they are). My One X JB update slowed down some fairly basic functionality for me and I really didn't like it after it updated. I've a concern that HTC are rushing software or it is too fragmented for them to release solid ROMs for their devices.
I use the DX as my day to day out and about phone and it works fine for the most part. There's nothign major wrong with it, just a lot of little niggles here and there. Some of which were fixed with JB update!
If you want a very cheap phone for basic surfing, facebook etc and won't be installing any particularly big games you'll be fine with this device.
I went to get the desire X on sataday and was told by the shop that they do not keep them in stock as they are such a bad phone that they nobody wanted them but from what you guys said it sounds like hes talking out of his ass

NEVER trust retailers...
i never do i sent a nice email to there head office saying how there staff ignored evreyone in the shop untill they all waked out then when i came back an hr later the palce was empty and then was told its a rubish phone but you guys on here seem to be loving the thing so im just looking for somewhere elce to buy it from but there isnt any other place i can find that sells it so i may have to bite the bullet and buy it from them
Personally, i hate the phone. I regret buying it everyday. Hell, even my old Galaxy S was a lot better then this piece of crap. Don't recommend buying it.
I find it Amazing that some people take so much effort and time to come onto a forum and talk rubbish.
You can go onto virtually any forum, IPHONE, Galaxy 3 and 4 forums, you will always get people there with problems, mostly user related.
You also get the chops who also go onto the various forums and say this phone is the biggest rubbish just for the kick of it.
To the one who bought this product, surely you dont compare it to Top of the range Galaxy, Sony or Iphone.
Compare apples with apples.
The Desire X fits into its own market, It delivers just what is expected of it . Accept that or buy another phone that will suit your needs.

'Delivers what is expected of it' Yeah because when we spend $300 on a phone we all expect a software update that will break one of the phone's main selling points.

This is not, hate desire x forum. I like dislike a lot of things. But this phone ISN'T crap. I've tested many equally costing devices from others and they can be called crap. Let us all stay on topic. Our frustration with jelly bean update n bugs shouldn't make us so narrow minded so as to neglect all the good things about it.
Peace.
