Question - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, sorry for this thread. I may sound like a noob but thats only in the flashing and recovery areas. Someone please explain what are custom roms. Is cm7 a custom roms. Once installed, can I revert to the stock rom? How do I get Clockworkmod Recovery.
How do I unbrick a Dell XCD35 aka ZTE Blade.
Device : Del XCD35

A custom ROM is one that has been amended by the cook to suit his taste and specific needs therefore is customized, the opposite of custom is a stock ROM which is the ROM that comes on the device from the manufacturer, out of the box
You can normally revert to stock after a custom be either restoring a backup taken pre custom or running an ruu which is a ROM update program which re installs the original stock roms, you should see these in your devices forum
afraid that I don't know anything about Dell devices so won't comment on recovery install

Help! Newbie here.

Hi,
Currently, Im stuck with my new phone. Hehe. I dunno where to start. Can someone post a link where I can upgrade my os version from the original to the custom ones. And also, what is the most stable roms out there?

Hi, I'd recommend you start out by reading this guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007244
First you need to root your device, then you need to install a custom recovery, before you can actually install a custom rom.
It's a learning process, if you've never done something similiar before, but nothing too hard
Both of the 2.3 roms are imo stable enough for daily use, so I'd recommend one of them. Which one you choose is mostly a personal preference.
The holy grail of guides can be found here

Good luck

[Q] Flashing Custom Roms through Recovery?

Hey XDA-Developers,
I'm not a very active poster on the XDA forums, so you will probably not know me, but I read this forums every day more then once
I always had a HTC Device since i got Android until now. I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy SII and have a question about this phone for Custom Roms.
On the HTC phones the Custom Roms are flashed through Recovery, so i think you can guess the question:
Is the only way to flash Custom Roms on the SGSII with Odin, or is this also possible through Recovery?
I'm hoping for a nice and helpful response, because when i receive my SGSII, I'm immediately rooting my SGSII and wanna try some Custom Roms
With Kind Regards,
Patrick
It can be flashed only through odin because it also flashes kernels and bootloader files with rom..
You can flash kernels or mods with cwm recovery(once you get it)..but roms are flashed only through odin..

Ok nice and clear answer
Thx for that!
Now the only thing is to wait for my SGSII

[Q] can't install custom rom in htc amaze

Hi everybody,
I need your help as i'm new to android and htc amaze.
First of all i have a rooted htc amaze with S-on using custom energy rom.
Im trying to install latest ics but in vain.
When trying to flash the rom in recovery mode, it states unable to open zip file.
I tried another stock rom and still the same.
How can i install latest rom on it??
Plz Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, wrong forum dude, second, read either the amaze bible or the very ics thread in this very forum.
Sent from an Amaaaaaazing place :-D
Flash the RUU first, you can't just jump from gb to ics without a new base
then since u s-on get ext4 recovery only way u can flash roms cause it flashes the boot.img seperatly so the phone can work properly

There are a lot of posts on this. Check out the ICS sticky. You have to have the stock recovery and a relocked bootloader. You don't flash the stock ROM via recovery; it happens automatically if you have the stock recovery and the proper file name on the external SD card.
Alternately, you can go to the NRG thread; they have instructions on updating to ICS.
Check out the all-in-one tool thread to get your Amaze back to stock.
I'm assuming you are on GB NRG, not ICS.
:banghead: Please keep all question related threads in the Q&A section. Thank You.

CM10 4.1JB to new OTA and a stock rooted/

Hey Guys,
I'm kinda lost and haven't found anything the forum that remotely resembles my problem.
I have a rooted EVO 4G LTE with CM10 JB 4.1. I'm sick of the ****ty camera picture quality and constant freezing while taking pictures (just freezes then the phone reboots) so i'm trying to go to a more of a stock rom that I'll just customize with launchers etc.
My question is, since I can't update the OTA from the rom, do i need to flash the new kernel and the stock rooted rom and if so what order? The other question I had if I do need to install the new kernel does it have to be in the root of the internal SD or external SD?
I tried flashing some of the newer stock rooted roms and none of them would work. I would get the message (bad) when trying to update through recovery. I thought at first that just meant a corrupted zip file but when trying 3 different roms that all said the same thing I thought maybe it could be because the kernel is different then what I have.
At any rate, if anyone could help with a link to some kind of guide (if anyone knows of one) or just some general directions that would be insanely helpful.
Thanks for any help offered!
Download the Rom of your choice. Pull the boot img from that Rom. That is the kernel you need to flash. The fact that your asking this question I would reccomend using the app " flash image gui". You can flash the boot img from your current Rom then immediately boot into recovery and flash the Rom.

Haha, yeah. Thanks! I like to dabble but I wouldn't call myself any kind of pro. I just wasn't sure if the rom would stay stable if I updated the kernel will still in the OS. Anyways, thanks again! :good:
Hey man I didn't wanna come off like I'm some kind of expert cause I know enough to get myself in trouble that's about it, but I have some expierence with a s-on device.
If your not sure just read some more. A good thread is "don't panic" in the Q&A section.
You should be fine tho
good luck

[HELP]Gingerbread to CM10(or paranoid)attempt, using CWM - gives infinite CWM booting

I have Gingerbread which is (according to my understanding) what is considered 'stock'
I downloaded CM10 and tried to install it using CWM but after a reboot I got infinite CWM booting (reboot back to CWM, reboot back to CWM forever)
Got told that it was because I didn't have stock and I needed to go
[MY CURRENT ROM] ==> [STOCK ROM] ==> [CM10]
but my current rom IS STOCK ROM, cause it is gingerbread...
then I was told that after the [STOCK ROM] stage I had to upgrade to [STOCK ROM] of android 4.x
cause that was the *ONLY* (is it?) way to also upgrade to boot loader which is needed to host the CM10 in my phone,
but I was too afraid to loose root
(thus loosing the option to use CWM, which I had no interest in..)
so I gave up on this path
>>> Could I get stock 4.x for my phone and use Mobile Odin Pro to root it and then install it safely without the fear of loosing root apon installation?
Instead I tried upgrading Gingerbread to paranoid of the same android prefix (2.x), since my gingerbread android rom is 2.3 and paranoid android rom is 2.5 there should not be any more any of the
"bootloaders upgrade only by installing stock roms" nonsense anymore..
so I went here:
http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/i9100g
Since I do have Samsung Galaxy S 2 GT-I9100G
and tried to install paranoid via CWM the same way - it let me back to infinite CWM booting once again....
then I was told that (from some unknown reason) it is because I didn't try to install it over stock rom or some other nonsense...
but GINGERBREAD IS STOCK... --__--'
I am clueless right now...
all I want is to get out of this useless crashy gingerbread into something more modern, what am I doing wrong? why do I always end up in infinite CWM booting?
what the tutorials I'm following are missing that I keep not doing which makes me end up in this situation every rom I try to install?
what is it, that one magical step that I don't do, that solves everything up and stops screwing up my installations attempts?
please.. help.. ty..
Do a clean upgrade through samsungs pc software(i believe it is or was called kies), cm10 is based on android 4.1.2 so you should have this version of stock rom installed since the rom is dependent on kernel which is changed with new versions of android. You cant run jelly bean rom with gingerbread kernel
Stock rom is every rom for your device officially provided by manufactorer not just the one you got your phone with, I think that you might have been mislead

Thank you for the response, but if I do the upgrade using the samsung software for that... won't I loose root?
I am not familiar with Samsung development but there should be root available for all of the android versions but yes you will have to root again probably
I am currently on my phone but if you search xda for sgs2 root tutorials you should find a proper one

my hardware version is SGS2G and not the regular SGS2, will it make a difference?
I found this tut:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCgncF59mwE
said I need to dl 'insecure kernel' from here:
http://hotfile.com/list/1967350/4304d29
but they are only for i9100, none for i9100G ..
found this on xda:
http://fus.nanzen.se/
also this somewhere else:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ (searching i9100g)
but under the i9100g option there are so many countries, none of them mine... what am I suppose to do with them?
I am sorry but I dont know what to do.
I am a xperia user and xperias have a completely different procedure for rooting. The best thing to do would be to find someone on xda who knows how to do this, since I am afraid I can't help you because I dont have the knowledge

OK, thank you anyways for trying...
can anybody please please tell me if when I upgrade my rooted gingerbread rom via samsung's method to 4.x android rom - WILL I LOOSE CWM on recovery boot?
I must know that...
I must know that if I would have made a mistake by upgrading, I must know that I would still be able to revert everything back to my rooted gingerbread.
