CM10 4.1JB to new OTA and a stock rooted/ - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey Guys,
I'm kinda lost and haven't found anything the forum that remotely resembles my problem.
I have a rooted EVO 4G LTE with CM10 JB 4.1. I'm sick of the ****ty camera picture quality and constant freezing while taking pictures (just freezes then the phone reboots) so i'm trying to go to a more of a stock rom that I'll just customize with launchers etc.
My question is, since I can't update the OTA from the rom, do i need to flash the new kernel and the stock rooted rom and if so what order? The other question I had if I do need to install the new kernel does it have to be in the root of the internal SD or external SD?
I tried flashing some of the newer stock rooted roms and none of them would work. I would get the message (bad) when trying to update through recovery. I thought at first that just meant a corrupted zip file but when trying 3 different roms that all said the same thing I thought maybe it could be because the kernel is different then what I have.
At any rate, if anyone could help with a link to some kind of guide (if anyone knows of one) or just some general directions that would be insanely helpful.
Thanks for any help offered!

Download the Rom of your choice. Pull the boot img from that Rom. That is the kernel you need to flash. The fact that your asking this question I would reccomend using the app " flash image gui". You can flash the boot img from your current Rom then immediately boot into recovery and flash the Rom.

Haha, yeah. Thanks! I like to dabble but I wouldn't call myself any kind of pro. I just wasn't sure if the rom would stay stable if I updated the kernel will still in the OS. Anyways, thanks again! :good:

Hey man I didn't wanna come off like I'm some kind of expert cause I know enough to get myself in trouble that's about it, but I have some expierence with a s-on device.
If your not sure just read some more. A good thread is "don't panic" in the Q&A section.
You should be fine tho
good luck

Newbie to fassy, help me?

Hello all, I have some questions hopefully someone can help me with. First of all, I'd like to say I'm not a complete newb, or idiot. I have a inc2 which I have rooted and modified myself to my liking based on the stock ota Rom after trying many custom roms. I have a custom kernel set up, a daemon installed, I'm underclocked and undervolted per my settings and govs. I have read threw this forum a lot, I ordered this phone for my wife, should be here in the next few days, I'm excited as I will take it over for a few days playing with it. I have had a Samsung moment before also that I rooted, though long ago. My questions are, obviously, this bootloader is not locked, correct? On my HTC, I s offer and rooted, if I want to upgrade to the newest ota, I just wait for a dev to deox, zip align, and pre root it, then I flash that Rom in clockwork via zip file. On this phone, I should update first, before I root? If Verizon releases a ota, can I just update my phone as if I weren't rooted an retain root and everything, if not, how do I get it? You guys speak of a modem, is that the same as what HTC guys refer to as the radio, and does it need to be flashed seperately as I have to now, or is it included in Samsung roms? Is there any recovery, even the stock one, that can be used to flash and backup that isn't actually on the SD card and not the phone, in case somethin goes wrong with my card I will still be able to get into recovery? Is the fascinate officially on gingerbread? Can I just flash roms through recovery, or do most of them.require this odin thing? What is voodoo? I gather its something to do with a kernel, can it be used on a stock rooted 2.3 Rom "if there is such a thing"? I'm just a newb to this phone who can't wait to play with a new toy for a while, just unfamiliar with terminology and how things work on Samsung phones now. Should I just use some one click root method to obtain root then use the stock recovery (or custom if anyone knows one that can be installed to phone not SD) to flash files and kernels? If Verizon pushes a new ota after I do this will it try and screw me like on my inc 2? Thanks in advance for any help.

You don't actually have to root the phone. Just flash the rooted Rom of your choice through odin, and then use odin again to flash cwm (if you're using TW roms).
There's no official Gb for the fascinate as of yet, but there are a couple of Gb roms ported from the Mesmerize. Look them up in the forums. Never use the phone button in odin, always pda
By the time Verizon pushes an update somebody will already have it rooted, Su, deodexed, and ready for use. In any case, you can always go back to a completely stock version in less than 10min

I stayed up half the night last night pouring over these and other forums, I have decided I want something like your setup, I know what the PW thing in your signature is, as that's what I want, what are those other things? I guess I'm gonna put the vodoo kernel on there too. And o yeah, I can just take my completely stock phone, odin the PW Rom, and bam, I'm rooted? Do I need to install a gingerbread bootloader first? Thanks for answering these long posts..

You can just grab the Odin file for PWGB /w modem and flash that, then flash a CWM file in before starting up the phone so it takes....and you are done. I suggest you start off with a stock kernel(included in the odin file) before you move on to other kernels. It will help you see the differences between the kernels more clearly, which to me are marginal at best...for the time being anyway.

Don't worry about the boot loader, it'll be in the PWGB odin file.
TKSGB 9-27 is the kernel by comradesven
Adrenalineshot 9. 5 is the speed tweak
Honey comb 2. 02is the theme.
Everything you need is in the development section
I believe cwm is always in phone memory (not 100 per sure though)

Laurenop is spot on in his posts...everything you need is included in the pwgb.tar except cwm. Thats why I always recomend new fascinate users to start with this rom. it's easy to install with no hiccups. Prime example is a couple threads down, a new user is trying to flash miui...instead of being patient, learning, doing lots of reading, he starts getting flash happy. By the time I get back on to help him he has impatiently skipped thru provided directions and soft bricks his phone lol... then wants to be spoon fed everything because he is in panic mode since it's not even his phone. Im glad you have taken the time and read up, I have no doubt you will enjoy the fassy! Welcome aboard!!
Thanks guys, I believe that does it for me, the thing I was talking bout as far as cwm bein on SD card was because I read on this forum somewhere it was on there not the phones memory, that's why Rom manager asks you to verify it or somethin, thanks for bein patient with me, now time to get my feet wet, the more I learn the more I help also, I'm not just a leech, I love helping others so you guys time and efforts were not wasted. [Q] Installing viper rom hboot 1.5

Ok, I got my evo 3d about 2 hours ago. I used the roll up sticky to find out how to root. I used htc dev, all went as expected. I now have twrp and superuser. So the first ROM im gonna try is viper rom. I know I have limitations with having used htc dev. So my question is... Do I need to do anything other than flash the rom from recovery? like flash a kernel with flash image gui beforehand? It states in the op that it uses the stock kernel so I think ill be ok with just wiping and flashing but I just wanna make sure. Please be easy on me, as I know this is a noob question that youll say I could have found by searching. I did search a little. Thanks in advance.
Edit..nvm, I got it.

If it uses stock kernel, then wipe everything through recovery and flash. And if after flashing you face any issues , flash boot.img using fastboot then working kernel.zip from recovery.
But i would suggest you to use PC to boot recovery then wipe then flash. So you will face no issues.

CWM being weird

Okay, so I have created a different thread about No rom manager when i first got my phone. I have found the update.zip file in the noob thread. But now, I have done everything, & I flashed a rom. I would like to flash a different rom to check it out, when I do, It says something about the script being too old or something? any help? I haven't encountered this in my other phones (g2, hd2, mytouch 3g)
More info would help (what rom are you on and which one you are trying to flash) but it sounds like you are on cm7/miui/ics and are trying to flash a touch whiz rom which in that case you have to odin back to stock jfd first.

New to i777, please help

Just moved from iPhone to i777, wanted to get ICS, but eneded up bricking my first phone by installing something meant for i9000. At that time I didn’t know Galaxy S2 has variants, just searched for S2 and got burned. My fault…..should have understood better.
I want to do it right this time so I have been reading about i777, ROMs, kernels, CWM.
I want to put SHOStock or CM9 ROM.
I know where these ROMs are and how to flash them using CWM.
But that’s where my confusion starts, that there are just too many sources and options and I don’t know which one is right.
So please advise.
How do I root?
Using this? It has multiple options
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18576627#post18576627
or this ?
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
Which kernel to use
The one mentioned in SHOStock thread #3 post the Cherry Picker Kernel for i777 or Entorpy? Siayh
How do I get CWM on these, isn’t recovery part of the kernel or do I flash It separately or may be use ROM Manager, once rooted.
Modem? What does it do? Is it for phone or wi-fi and how do I know which one to use.
My phone’s data
SGH-i777
Android 2.3.6
Baseband I777UCKK6
Kernel 2.6.35.7
Build#
GINGERBREAD.UCKK6
Here's what you need to do:
1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.
4. Use CWM to flash SHOStock or CM9.
First of all thanks for responding.......
Is there a relation between which ROM will work with which Kernel, I may be wrong but I got the impression, depending on which ROM you are putting, you should have a kernel that supports it.
Also it seems like, ShoStock has its own variation of entropy, named cherry picker.
Thanks.......

Sometimes there is, but it seems like most of the ICS kernels are interchangeable. Just try out each kernel for a few days...once you have CWM, switching kernels is no big deal. When switching kernels, though, it's always wise to flash jivy's Kernel Cleaning Script just before flashing a new kernel.
Can you use CWM to flash kernels as well ? I thought they always have to be done using ODIN.
May be I underestimated CWM, I thought it was for ROMs and zips only.

u can use mobile odin or cwm but its just a matter of preference you just had to use mobile odin at first to acquire a cwm enabled kernel but pretty much you can flash everything in cwm as long as its specified to be cwm flashable zip kernels roms and modems and such
edit: the free mobile odin only lets you flash kernels btw its the premium version that lets you do everything without going to recovery
hope to help

You don't seem to have a firm grasp on all this. Maybe you should do some more reading before going further...
Anyway, here's a brief explanation:
A kernel is the underlying core of the operating system; it is how the OS interacts with the hardware.
A rom (the proper term is actually firmware, but nobody uses it) is basically the whole user interface; it's the part of the OS you see. When you flash a rom, you're flashing everything, including a kernel.
Like I said before, you never want to flash a custom kernel using Odin. Doing so will trip the phone's flash counter, and this will show up if you ever have to take the phone in for warranty stuff.
The reason it's ok to use Odin to flash the stock with root package is that it comes with the stock kernel, not a custom one. Basically, once you're rooted, you shouldn't touch Odin again unless its to recover from a brick. Basically everything else can be done in CWM.
Yes I am still reading & trying to get a grip on it.
So first I will root it, then flash kernel using Mobil Odin
Then get in CWM mode ad flash ROM, which will come with the kernel i.e. cherrypicker kernel and modem I need.
Yes one part I have understood very well is that use CWM as much as one can to avoid committing mistakes by flashing something that doesn't belong.
Sorry for asking so many qs., I wish I could understand this faster.....
Thanks again........

You don't need any more of a guide than that. Don't worry about breaking wifi, that isn't a problem on any of the popular roms.
If you want a Samsung based ICS rom that works really well, I suggest ShoStock2. If you want an AOSP based rom, most people suggest AOKP. I haven't tried it personally.

[Q] can't install custom rom in htc amaze

Hi everybody,
I need your help as i'm new to android and htc amaze.
First of all i have a rooted htc amaze with S-on using custom energy rom.
Im trying to install latest ics but in vain.
When trying to flash the rom in recovery mode, it states unable to open zip file.
I tried another stock rom and still the same.
How can i install latest rom on it??
Plz Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, wrong forum dude, second, read either the amaze bible or the very ics thread in this very forum.
Sent from an Amaaaaaazing place :-D
Flash the RUU first, you can't just jump from gb to ics without a new base
then since u s-on get ext4 recovery only way u can flash roms cause it flashes the boot.img seperatly so the phone can work properly

There are a lot of posts on this. Check out the ICS sticky. You have to have the stock recovery and a relocked bootloader. You don't flash the stock ROM via recovery; it happens automatically if you have the stock recovery and the proper file name on the external SD card.
Alternately, you can go to the NRG thread; they have instructions on updating to ICS.
Check out the all-in-one tool thread to get your Amaze back to stock.
I'm assuming you are on GB NRG, not ICS.
:banghead: Please keep all question related threads in the Q&A section. Thank You.
