During the storm this past weekend somebody (me) spilled a drink on my phone when the power went out. I immediately took the battery out and tried to dry out the phone as much as I could. The next day I powered up the phone only to find out that I could not make phone calls using the earpiece. Speaker phone and Bluetooth works fine. I also discovered that media will not play through the speaker although plugging headphones in works fine...the ringer and notifications work fine. Other than that, the phone works great. I tried flashing another ROM to see if just maybe it was a software thing...it wasn't.
The real issue is that I don't have insurance or store warranty coverage and my bootloader is unlocked. There is also signs of moisture on the phone. For now I can live with it, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew of any other options I could try. Or...maybe there is a way to redirect the sound??? Please help!!!

If the phone works in general... then most likely a specific piece is ruined related to the phone speaker/mic.
You can try tearing apart the phone ( I believe there are tear down guides online) and then using rubbing alcohol try to clean out any corrosion, especially around components that are having issues.
If that doesn't work, then you'll have to try to replace the component. unfortunately not sure how easy that is. Tons of components sold for iphones but doubt as much for atrix.

Yeah, I was thinking of that as an option...being optimistic, I was gonna try to use the phone for a few days and see if it miraculously clears up...wishful thinking
I bet your Atrix will revive once the hangover subsides!
No really, it will be ok I'm sure, I've seen cases where people inmerse their devices into pools and toilets only to discover a few days later that they keep on ticking.
The clue here is to be patient and keep it from using it for several days, and I'm talking 3, 5 or even a week! So be very patient.
Remove the battery and let it dry inside a bag, box or bottle filled with uncooked rice or if you have plenty of dry bags (those that come inside some medicines or electronics) use them!
Try not to disassemble the Atrix to avoid dust contamination, but if you wan't you can go ahead and do it. The Atrix is very easy to disassemble. Just use common sense, and if you use alcohol to get rid of moisture and corrosion, be wary that even cotton or cotton swabs can be dangerous since there are components that are cold-soldered onto the motherboard and can be peeled-off very easily.
Don't use a hair dryer, since you could damage the plastic if not used correctly.

I sat it in rice over night, and used a blow dryer on cool but still not dice so far. Unfortunately I don't have any other form of comms other than my Atrix...I may go and buy a cheap Go Phone to use and let the Atrix take a nap. I will be patient...I'm thinking that it will wake up one day and everything will be OK

So if the only part that's not working at the moment is the ear speaker, then maybe you can get a spare from cnn.cn and replace it yourself. Very easy to do by the way.
The bad thing is that I think they don't sell the speaker alone, but the whole modular assembly that contains the speaker, power button and biometric scanner. But check the site above to verify.

Was it a mixed or sugary drink? It could've pooled up in your speaker into something sticky. You might want to try cleaning it with alcohol disassembled. Or even dabbing it with alcohol while assembled but leave battery out and let dry at least a day. Each time you dab it with alcohol, try sopping it back up with a dry q tip.

Unfortunately it isn't just the speaker, media will not play through the loudspeaker either...kinda weird because the speaker phone works just fine. Also, game sounds don't play. I'm thinking it might be an amplifier or something.
It was a mixed drink so it did have some sugar in it.
I dropped my atrix in the toilet. It was only in there for 2 seconds max, but I dried it off and tried to see if everything still worked. None of the speakers worked, but I put it in a bowl of rice for a couple of hours in the Texas heat, afterwards everything was working fine.
I have taken my Atrix for about a 10 minute swim, after jumping in the pool with it on my hip in an otterbox defender case. I felt something on my hip and noticed my phone there! I immediately jumped out of the pool, removed the case and battery. Dried what I could with a towel. Then put the phone in rice for about 3 hours. I then took the phone out of the rice and gave it another bath in alcohol, swishing the phone around to make sure the alcohol got every where the water got... I then let the phone sit for 4 days next to a floor vent in my house. Not directly on the vent. After the four days I tried powering the phone on. The phone powered on with no problems(no sim or memory card.) I then put my sim and memory card in, plugged in the phone and tried powering the phone on again, an it would not power on.
I then took the phone apart(not completely did not dis-connect any ribbon cables etc..) and used a q-tip and rubbing alochol to wipe any contacts that I thought might have signs of oxidation or water damage. Put the phone back together and let it sit again next to a vent for another 3 days. Put my sim, memory card and batter back in and the phone powered up with no problem.
I am currently using the atrix, the only thing that does not work is the front facing camera. It just doesn't seem to want to power up... but that is something I can live with. I did even after the 7 days had some moisture between the LCD and digitizer, so I let the phone sit in my hot car for an hour or two of an on to help get rid of the moisture.
Hope this helps.. I would recommend if you see any moisture to turn the phone off and let it sit, as if you can see moisture, there is also probably some that you cannot see and could cause more damage.

what's really funny are people that put their phone up for public sale, are honest enough to mention that it was dropped in the toilet and still want market value and not the best offer. what kind of crap is that? it's my valuable crap?
Thanks for all of the help...you guys are the greatest...I will buy a backup before I tear the phone open...but I think cracking it open is in order...I think the moisture is gone but the sugar may have coated something.

Went swimming last and forgot my phone was in my pocket, it was only underwater for a minute till I pulled it out. I dried dried it off the best I could and even used a hair dryer but I think the screen is ruined. When I power it on it vibrates and the lights flash on like normal just the screen is blank.
Am I screwed?

Here's a fix...
First, your battery is definitely done. But the phone is not. Take the phone apart. Don't get too crazy just separate the main screen piece from the backing and battery cover. Then, fill a sandwich baggie with dry rice and put all the pieces in with it. Let it be for about 24 hours (longer is better). Put it back together. You should be good to go (hopefully your new battery has arrived). If there is moisture left in the the screen, it'll look funny but it dried out for me after a couple more days and looked normal.
Obviously, no guarantees here, but this has worked for me...twice. It's not a perfect fix but it'll save you a few bucks.

Don't leave the phone on the bed while you are having fun with your wife. Oh wait. Whenever I go to the steam room or next to a pool I keep my phone away from humidity.
lol ill keep that in mind, Right now I'm having a connection problem. wifi seems to work but really slow. Also I am unable to connect to 3G or any other network. I cant make or receive calls or surf the web. I tried wiping and flashing the newest TazzFroyo rom but I still have the same problem. Any ideas?

Best advice ever given on xda. Im an electronics repair guy for the army and whenever someone brings us a wet device we do exactly this. Take it apart as much as your skills allow and you are comfortable with, then leave it in rice for a couple days. After all this take some canned air and blow it out to make sure there isnt any dirt or particles in there and put it back together...

I have dropped my phone in water for 30 seconds or so and pulled the battery as fast as I could, then placed everything (taken as far apart as I could) on my radiator on top of a couple of pencils (to avoid direct contact) for a couple days and my phone has never shown any problems including battery.
Ok so I accidently bumped my fence which had my phone on it which had a pot of water next to it. Then my phone dropped in it and i pulled it out as quickly as possible and took out the battery. FYI: My phone was still working underwater. HUGE MISTAKE. I popped in my battery to see which things worked and etc and also when i booted my phone back up the battery dropped 20%. Then i took out the battery, sim card, and sd card and let it dry in the sun. My camera is all foggy and stuff now. Can anyone help me fix my camera, speaker and battery?
*EDIT* Also my speaker was jacked up too i think because the speaker wasnt sounding very clear.

If you do then it is covered. Water damage is specifically mentioned as covered.
If not . . . hmm, since the dot is still white you might still have a chance. Usually there is more than one though. The one near the battery is for a quick spot check, often there is also one inside for confirmation. Provided everything is ok, and it is still under warranty, maybe removing all signs of water (water marks, fog, ect.) and then attempting warranty fulfillment MIGHT work.

If you want, but from the several times here that I have seen where ppl send in their rooted Vibrants for warranty repair (usually GPS), it does not seem as if T-Mobile/Samsung really give a d4mn.
One word for you ...rice. put your phone in a bag of rice for 24 hours and don't touch it. After that take it out and clean it all up, put your battery back in and it should work perfect.
I actually washed my wife's phone and this worked. Hope this helps

It absorbs humidity.
By the way, in the future don't put the battery back in until you've let everything dry as long as possible. Any water could short circuit the phone if you put the battery back in.
I would think also about very detailed disassembling and let dry very very well for long time before trying powering the phone.
alcohol is good for wiping off some certain parts but it can break the screen seal

And FYI, bleach on a Q-Tip will turn all red water damage stickers white again.

awesome DUDE i have dropped my vibrant at least three times in water and what can i say THIS THING IS a beast my microphone doesnt work anymore but ehhh small price to pay actually does anyone know where i can find a replacement mic ive looked everywhere

Don't waste your time with bleach and q-tip, just ask for the replacement and when it comes, take off the new sticker with a hair dryer, 10 seconds or so, and tweezers. Then replace the water damaged one with the new one. Just like operation.
Last night i was out, and well basically my phone isnt working and im 90% sure its water damage now, the screen has little white bits round the end, whats the best way to get it working again, because it wont turn on :/

My girlfriend knocked her phone off the counter into the toilet when she was sick (needless to say phone had some chunks on it as well). It was game over. luckily in US we are able to insure it and we are now getting a new one for the one time "low cost" of $125. 125 is better than a full retail, thats for sure. I made her call AT&T before just to see if we could weasel a SII on early upgrade, no dice.

Best thing to do would have been to take out the battery/sim/sdcard and put in dry rice immediately, then leave overnight. Might not be too late either, but def should have done that right away. Right after I got my Captivate I got really drunk and accidentally soaked it, I didnt even realize it had gotten so wet until I woke up the next morning and tried to turn it on. It even tried to boot, showing the Samsung screen briefly then immediately turning off. Taking the battery door off there was water drops inside. After about 18 hours in rice I was soooo surprised that it booted right up and I havent had a problem out of it to this day!! I still use it all the time.

It wasnt even beer, it was just raining loads so it got soaked in my pocket

So i have put it in dry rice, and well it booted up but the touch screen was unresponsive, and so was the fingerprint sensor leaving me with no way to actually use any of the phones features, i think there is a tiny bit of water left so im going to stick it in rice a bit longer but try and get the screen repaired if that doesnt help,
Is there anyway i can access the stuff on my phone using the usb connection maybe?
Sorry to hear about your phone. My son got pushed into a swimming pool with his Atrix in his pocket. It is fully functional today.
What we did.
Rice and a warm spot. Not for hours... It took a whole week before everything straightened out. There was an issue with the sim and sd card readers, but nothing an emery board didn't fix.
First mistake, you turned (tried to) it on. Second mistake...........you turned it on too soon after putting it in rice.
One day in dry rice is not enough. If you read guides about water damage you will see that you really should have the phone in dry ice for 5 days. Never ever plug it into the charger or turn it on before you do this. Only takes one wee drop of liquid to short something out.
Next, you should strip the phone down and clean everything internally to make sure you will not suffer from oxidation and corrosion in the future. Many phones will work after being in dry rice, only to succumb to corrosion after a few weeks or months because all the connectors inside became oxidized.
In short, water damage is horrible, but there are many guides on the internet specific to this outside of XDA which can help you. The iPhone water damage guides are especially useful, even though the hardware is different. The concept is exactly the same.
First rule is always do not attempt to turn the phone on, and do not plug into a charger.

Hope this helps, the phone that I mentioned, was turned on immediately after getting wet. His girlfriend was the smart one and pulled the battery for him.
We sat it in the rice and checked it every day by turning it on. (I am in no way recommending this btw, simply reporting an experience.). Each day it seems like it got better and better. The last two days everything was working, but there was still evidence of moisture on the screen. So we baked it for a few extra days. I did have an advantage over you. The outside temp was 100 plus and I sat his, in that bag of rice, on the hood of a red car everyday for most of the afternoon. It will most likely take longer with a cooler temp to work with.
We may have been 'lucky'. But this is so you know that there is a great chance that everything will be fine.
well, an update on my girlfriend's PUKE phone:
The day I posted that was I think thursday, we let is sit all thursday- friday- saturday. On sunday (around noon) she couldnt handle the Nokia 3360 any longer. When she left for her "mani/pedi", I sat down with the poor phone. After a little cleaning of contacts and such I was able to get it to boot and come up. When she got home it was up and going. She was thrilled and I got a "reward".
She used it all Sunday and today until the insurance joint came in. The only thing that didnt totally dry was the screen. It looked like pure hell, but worked. She said anythign was etter than the old green screen nokia
PS- she had tried to turn it on friday and got a "Modem Failed to Initialize: Starting RSD". Sunday it worked fine.

I've heard up to a week but a couple days will probably work. I would probably just use a can of compressed air. Hair dryers can create enough heat to loosen the adhesive for screens on phones. Maybe place it near a vent or put it on a window sill with sunlight?

Okay....i have a black international galaxy s II converted to white and i dropped it in the water last night I was fairly intoxicated and my friend immediately helped me put it in a bowl of rice battery out etc....I left it like that overnight then tried to turn the phone on (not smart)wasn't turning on.....i came to my senses and disassembled the phone right away this morning and saw it was still a bit wet, immediately stuck it in the bowl of rice.
What it's chances at survival?? lol it was legit in water submerged for a only 1 sec if anything, i immediately snatched it out and saw that it was still turning on etc...
Also, what are warranty options? You think they'd know it was water damage after i put it back together? I also have a custom ROM and kernel and stuff but if it doesn't turn on would they be able to find out?
Hopefully the bowl of rice fixes it -.- I've had the phone for maybe like 1 month tops

Edit: fully functional luckily, no water damage, no eroding, litmus indicator is still fine and didn't change colors to indicate water damage. Close call but 100% perfect
The prognosis is not good. Warranty does not cover water damage unless you have insurance on the device. Sorry, I hope I'm mistaken for your sake!

blahhh......it doesn't look like theres any water damage since i have a feeling the rice soaked a lot of water initially.
lol been going all over the web watching youtube videos etc....seeing ppl freaking submerge their galaxy s II and it still working damn.
Gonna leave it in the rice for another like 2 hrs probably then see how it does, was barely any water when disassembled, droplet here and there but that doesn't mean jack sh*t.

Also even if it's completely dry and left in rice for a month you probably can't warranty it as there's water sensitive tabs all over modern smartphones. On the battery, usually near the headphones jack and others inside.

Good thing i have my OEM battery and an extra anker 1900. The first anker was in the phone so if thats messed up, I have 2 other batteries to try.
Damn 2 days -.- I'm probably gonna end up trying it tonight or something lol. Im in college and flying home on tuesday so i kinda need to find out if it'll work or not. Thanks for the help.
But damn, all those survival stores of the galaxy s II is making me both sad cuz if mine doesn't work, how the hell did theirs survive and hopeful it may work. Lol some dude had his in a full cycle washing machine, left the phone in rice for 7 days and it worked

i've heard a hair dryer is a bad idea, reading about it on the webs. Apparently it messes with the circuit boards or w/e......air dry is the best, i just let it sit in rice for a bit longer, pretty confident all of it is dry since i took the phone apart and let it sit in the rice.
Running it now and everything is working perfectly.

Anyone with experience dropping it water or any advice regarding preventing further damage?
Bury it in a bowl of uncooked rice for a day or more. It will dry it out. There may be damage to the screen, or some contacts may be shorted, but this will help minimize damage. Also give it a few days to heal, some problems might go away as the last bits of water evaporate out.

Dont turn it on, put it in rice for 48+ hours.

Go to the hardware and get some damp rid. Place the phone in a small tupperware, place that in a larger tupperware with the damp rid in it and seal for a week. I have received 2 phones this way.
Take it apart and blowdry, that's the only way for sure, assuming you haven't tried to turn it on, good luck...

My OG 4G was submerged and I brought it back to life with no issues.
1. Like others have said do not turn the phone on
2. Do not blow dry the phone, if you have concerns with the contaminants in the pool water you CAN give the phone an alcohol wipe down. Alcohol evaporates quickly and can help to draw excess water out of small crevices while cleaning contacts, boards, etc
3. SETUP a drying chamber like others have recommended. Either using the rice
method or using a desiccant like Damp Rid. Put that in a shoe box along with
the phone and tightly seal it. 3 days minimum up to a full week. It took my
OG 5 days to come around.
That kind of rice works better, long grain, short grain, broken rice, Jasmine?
You need to take it apart and clean it NOW.
Pool water is highly clorinated. Chlorine is a corrosive.
Even drying it out or using rice will still damage the device. The water / chlorine are already in the device. Since its got a non removable battery the unit will still have power running to parts of it.
What needs to happen is
1, file a claim and replace it.
2. If you can get it apart. remove the battery and start to clean it with isopropoyl alchohol or contact cleaning solution.
But my guess is since it actually went underwater the LCD will have spots on it as well.
At this point its probably going to be a bad device.
easy way to turn it off, if on still, hold power for 10 sec, when in off state, hold vol down, boot into bootloader, select fastboot, select power down.
Don't use a blower that will accelerate the oxidation on the circuits.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I might have to say one good prayer in hopes of getting this device to work. Im in the Philippines so my phone doesn't have signal anyways I just mainly up use it as a wifi device, the real problem is when I get home. But if I do file a claim now maybe I'll have one waiting for me when I get back from vacation. Thanks for the help
Let the phone sit for a day or two, or until majority of the water evaporates naturally. (do not put in sun or apply direct heat, as it will make your screen fog and cause bubbles etc.) When majority of the water is out then take a blow dryer on cool or normal (not hot or warm) and apply to phone covering all areas for at least 30 mins. You need to take of the back plastic face plate as it is easy to remove and will easily hold water. If you can watch a video on how to access the batter (if you cant find one there are some for the One X line witch is very similar in build). If water is near the battery or any electrical circuits it could easily fry. If you are unsure if the water is not completely out of it you have either not waited long enough or applied enough air to the phone. Good Luck and Remember do not turn on wet electronics! THAT'S A NO-NO!!!

Blow dry as in a can of air. Not a blow dryer.
Don't forget a pool has chlorine in the water. It may even be worth rinsing. Then blow dry and then let it sit.
Take the rear cover off. Was gonna say remove the battery too, lol. But the sealed tupperware/bag of white rice works. Be patient as hard as that is.

I like the insurance claim option the best also, I suspect that if it comes around, it will never be the same again, and I would be concerned that one day, for no particular reason, it will simply stop working.
Get a new phone, and call it a day. These things happen dude
The key is to get it apart and get every bit of water out/dried, I guess I shoulda mentioned to watch aspects of things to not get hot, however a regular blow dryer on low or cool shouldn't hurt anything, it will be a delicate process. First things first though, get the battery out, do not try and turn it on. I've fixed thousands of microelectronic boards, traces, solder points, and water damage accounts for about 75% of most of what I've seen. If you aren't comfortable with this as most wouldn't be, find someone who is or try some kind of tep, tsp, whatever but it doesn't sound like that's an option...
