I need help with the rooting process please - Motorola Photon 4G

I want to root my Motorola Photon. I have been reading many posts on different rooting methods and I'm confused on all these methods. Of course, the dockless method sounds like the best since I don't have the dock. Can someone who is more experienced in rooting please tell me what is the best or easiest way to root the phone? Does anyone have a good step by step thread or website I can use? Any help would be great!

Shabby has a thread in the dev section which is one click. I am happy to help. What exactly are you confused about?

Thank you for your reply! I got my Photon the other day. I need to know what to do to root it. What do I have to download or do to root it? Yeah, I'm new at rooting. I tried the Z4 Root app but it don't work on Gingerbread.

This thread here offers the 'once-click-root' for our device. What operating system are you on? I'll assume windows. If so download the zip file as well as the appropriate drivers and then just run the bat file.

I downloaded the drivers and the zipped Photon OCR file. I installed the drivers. Do I put the zipped file on the SD card or do I run one of the files with the phone plugged in to my computer?

I ran the root batch file. It went through the process and said I should have root but I don't. I tried it a second time and got the same thing. How do I get the root access?

Check your drivers and try again. There's also the torpedo root method.

How do I do the torpedo method? I do have the torpedo tar file on my desktop

The instructions are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216131 in the Dev section.

I will be making a video on how to root using the most of the methods tonight. It won't be done and edited until late tonight but I will definitely get one up! That way we can aleviate some of these threads and issues people are having.

Man...I downloaded many apps and tried different prompts in the thread. I am lost!!!! Is there anyone I can call for tech support? I'm trying to get this to work and I'm not having any luck. I guess I'm about as noob as noob can be! Is there a youtube vid anywhere?

um i think he was making a comment towards calling someone on here to help him with it.
i honestly dont understand the issue with so many people not being able to root... yall have a root that is far easier then the nexus s 4g (i should know i wrote the one click for that phone too)

Here is shabbypenguins one click root that worked very easy.
anyways without further waiting here it is
Download
Drivers in case you need em
32-Bit 64-Bit
driver mirrors
Download and install the drivers. Download and extract the one click root to your desk top.
Run the one click root from the folder you extracted to your desk top. After 3 reboots you should be rooted.
Make sure when you plug your phone into your computer you select charging only in the notification pull down.
If it don't root your phone the first time try it again, some people reported having to do it twice.

This may be a stupid question, but does it completely wipe your phone when you root it?

I'm close. I did it 4 times and no go. I attached a screenshot on the info. Could it be the phone resetting itself twice during the process?

Try turning the phone off then on.make sure you have the drivers installed. Try reinstalling them if you do them try again. Make sure USB debugging us checked on your phone under menu/settings/applications/development. And when you plug in your phone to your computer in the notification pull down make sure to check charge only.

There's about 3 ways to root. I think theres more but can't remember.
Z4Root
SuperOneClick
ADB
I have.
Also superoneclick.
I tried setting up adb/sdk on my computer and failed. Stuck with the newb rooting techniques.

Ok is Z4root the only one you can do right on your phone?
Yes because it is an app.

Ok it is taking a long time....

Liking a phone or not should have nothing to do with whether a root shortcut works
Really its not hard to root with adb and all rooted users should have the android sdk installed anyway
This is a honest question. Exactly why would one root their fascinate? I guess I should ask who would want root without flashing a new rom? So far I haven't seen any roms that end users should be concerned with that doesn't come with root. Just curious.

I ran into that issue with installing adb. Download the application to your download folder, have two windows open - your download folder, and a window by just clicking on computer from the start menu. Just drag and drop the program from your downloads folder to the C: drive. You will get the standard pop up asking if you want to take this action, just click on continue or ok, can't remember which one it says. Good to go.
You could always try using Odin. There's a file that you can flash through Odin that will root your phone, install stock 2.2, and install the latest clockwork 3.0 (orange). I used that and it worked really well. There is a slight inconvenience in that you need clockwork 2.5 (red) to flash most of these ROMs but that's a really easy fix. You just have to flash the old clockwork using Odin and you'll be fine. The only problem I ran into was finding ROMs/kernels that you could flash through Odin but there are definitely a few out there.
Perhaps you have your reasons, but why not odin cwm, then flash a rom like sc? Not really seeing the advantages of staying on stock rom and rooting.

Unlocker my Bootloader, Want root, NOT custom roms

So I unlocked my bootloader via the HTC unlocker and I would like to know the easiest way to root. Can someone link me to the right thread please?
I dont want to flash custom roms because I like the stock (sue me). I just want to be able to delete all the crap T-mobile pre-loaded onto it, and some of the things that constantly run and kill me battery.
I know the bootloader unlock was the first step, now I need help with the second. BTW this is my first time so be gentle...

First make sure you have the following downloaded and copied to the root of your sdcard.
Follow this per the letter and you shouldn't have any problems.
Download the attached files to the root of your external sdcard. This works best if you have a seperate sdcard reader.
Shut off your phone.
Remove the battery from your phone (just to be sure that it's off.)
Place the battery back in.
Put in your sdcard.
Place the battery cover back on.
Hold the VOLUME DOWN button while pressing POWER and HOLD BOTH until your device powers up.
You should now see a prompt if you want to upgrade your Recovery.
Upgrade or update (whatever it is) your recovery
Now go ahead and select Recovery from the menu.
Select the option to install from sdcard.
Locate su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and flash it.
Reboot your rooted phone.

If so, all you'll need to do is fastboot flash recovery recovery.img with your phone in hboot mode. That's it. NO sdcard required!

Alright...
I cooked this up in line two minutes.
All you need to do is have the drivers installed first and USB Debugging enabled.
Unzip and run the Flash.bat as Administrator.
I hope it'll help.
Binary is the man! Thanks for all the tips on the forum. I've only posted a few times and have never rooted a phone either. I think I might try this. Wish there was an easy way to get rid of most of the sense crap and make this baby fly and have better battery. Any suggestions?

You can root and install a custom rom like BeastMod. A lot of stuff was removed and might meet your requirements.
Thanks! So the noobs.zip you attached will do what you explained earlier? Do we still need the 2 files on the root of our sd card? Just run noobs.zip from puter?

This should do everything for you.
All you need to do is have USB Debugging enabled in settings, plug it into your computer and run the bat script.
What it will do.
It'll reboot your phone and go into a white screen and send the recovery to your phone. Afterwards it will write to the nand. After that's finished it will reboot your phone automatically. You will still need to reboot to recovery after it's booted up and install the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip file. Make sure you have that on your INTERNAL sdcard if you don't have an EXTERNAL. The 5.0.2.7 recovery is the only recovery that supports the internal sdcard thus it is the only recovery that will work for you.

[Q] Root Issues Motorola Photon

Hello, I'm having problems with the one click root, it goes through the steps normally but when it says "hackin yo ****" and restarts the command script says "error: phone not found"... How can I fix this error?

I have rooted several separate photons and did not encounter issues. did u read the "read me" included in the AIO files?
Also, make sure that USB port recognizes the phone, maybe try a different USB that is directly connected to the motherboards header.
Possible the debugging or charge only mod not selected?
Best of luck.

Have your tried flashing any custom ROMS on it? If I recall, I could be totally wrong, when I put my custom recovery on the phone, it had to be rooted.
Download root checker from the market. That should tell you if you are definitely rooted or not.
If you are you can put your micro sd card in the computer with an adapter, put the custom ROM on that way, put the sd card back in the phone and flash the ROM like that. Post back when you tried root checker.

[Q] Can't Figure Out How to Root

I need help with rooting my phone. I have gone to:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1884#tutorial
I first started out with Samsung Galaxy Note II Kit. But, the update said I needed to do something about unlocking my boot loader, so I went to the Adam Outtler page. But, he says in the first post that this won't work If you do it with an OTA update after January 18, 2012. Well, I didn't notice that first anyways and tried Odin, and all it would do mainly was fail, or setup connection would take forever, and even Casual says:
/system/bin/sh: su: not found
noroot
DEVICE IS NOT ROOTED! ROOT YOUR DEVICE! Install any VRALJB ROM --Adam Outler
What I think I need to do is uninstall the OTA update, but most people I have seen do it through a rooted phone, but I don't have one yet. I have no idea what to do, and I am really confused and don't want to hard brick or screw up my phone. Could anyone help me with this? I am sorry if I am being stupid about this, but the only thing I ever rooted was a NOOK tablet which was simple.
P.S. I am sorry but if anyone respond between the times of 10am-12pm today, and 4pm-12am today, I will not be able to respond due to work arrangements I have for today.
First confirm the baseband: System Settings > About Phone > Baseband. If it shows VRALL4, you have the update and need to use the updated root and unlock method here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
Just go slowly and follow the directions (measure twice and cut once), its pretty easy. Good luck.
start at section 1 of my guide...then if youwant to unlock follow adams thread. make sure to use his latest "jailbreak" method(the one linked in my guide).
If you on the latest software from Verizon, just use Adams guide. That's all I did. Need any help let me know!
Or just follow this dude here.

the last thing i would recomend is using anything other than adams or my thread. also the op may just want root, which he can simply place root66 in odin and be done. the latest software adds no benifit other than if you like to internet bench race.

Well this is what I used on my Note 2, and had no issues. But, the OP can use whatever he wants. I was just suggesting what's the easiest method to me. Thanks for pointing it out

Ok, well I got everything together, I got TWRP and thus it is rooted. But, now I'm trying to install Cyanogen mod 10, using this video.

But, not using those files because those are for Sprint and I am instead using the files here.

But, once I try to put the roms up, it says I failed in TWRP, I have no idea why to.
