I was thinking of playing around with some roms/apps but I'm scared of trashing my SGII phone. Is there an app (Titanium Backup/My Backup Pro?) that will take a complete image of the phone as it is now including all photos, apps, files, and the way its setup and restore it should something go wrong? From the description of say Titanium Backup, it sounds like it might just back up individual apps and settings?

I've searched through the forums and tried a couple of apps to backup apps/data myself, but I'd be curious to get some feedback as to what the best backup app is. Most of the postings I've seen mentioned Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro. Titanium seems quite complicated in as much as there are a plethora of batch operation options. On the other hand, I didn't see an option to backup SMS/MMS/Bookmarks/etc. the way My Backup does. My Backup also seems far simpler to use. I guess the real question is, which one (or an alternative) is most accurate or reliable in both backing up and restoring apps and their associated data?

Actually Titanium Backup does save your txt and stuff but you have to save them through the explore option, I have never tried Backup Pro so I can't talk about how bad/good it is compared to TB.
But with Titanium backup you can backup any apk or system settings that are your phone, its actually the best money I have ever spent on the phone. I guess there can be a learning curve but its actually fairly simple to use. I mean there is free version of it, but to really see TB in action you need the "donate" version. TRUST ME you wont regret buying TB.
I use Mybackup pro, and it has been well worth the money I paid for it. I have never used Titanium but MyBackup does all that I need it to.
Titanium backup is by far the best money I have spent ....can't speak for my backup pro
TB is definitely not that difficult to use, I don't use it to back up email or sms just cuz my email (both acct's) are web based and .....I am always that deletes my texts regularly....
though I know you can do it with it.... it does save all my other settings though ....so no resetting up my other apps , other then gmail so that I can download titanium
OK, I've gone with Titanium. It just seems far more flexible and comprehensive and comparison test I have run proved it more accurate. I havent quite figured how to get it to backup sms/mms/bookmarks/etc. but I have the apps part down and it works like a champ. And while I'm on the subject, it's be quite nice if I had a flashable zip that installed Titanium but that's something I have no idea how to do.....but I'll figure it out.
Sorry for this but I have more Titanium questions.
1) If I have A2SD running TB doesn't seem to be aware of apps installed on the ext partition. What's the solution here? Move the apps, back them up, move them back to ext? A configuration issue with TB?
2) Try as I might, I can't seem to get backup of SMS/MMS to work. I backup what seems appropriate but when I restore I get nothing. My guess here is I'm backing up the wrong things or missing something I should be backing up.
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

The item you are looking for in the Backup/Restore tab is called [SMS/MMS/APN Dialer] storage. If you restore this, a reboot seems to be required before your data is visible.
I am fianally considering rooting my vibrant, and possibly trying some of the roms out there. I understand that it is wise to do a nandroid backup, and would also plan on using Titanium Backup to save all my user loaded apps. My question is what do you stand to lose by flashing a rom? Will Titanium Backup save my gmail settings, or does it only save app info for the user installed apps? Also, is it full proof, that I wont end up needing to pay for my paid apps a second time?? Will all my contacts be saved, and ready to use, or will I be looking at an hour to set this stuff up again?? What is truly involved?
Every time I kill the Backup & Restore application, my cel connection to the carrier gets cut off and all bars go down and it restarts and reestablishes connection again when the backup & restore application gets up. Anyone has this problem also?
It's tightly integrated with the stock 2.1 setup. The backup itself is pretty good (it's basically the Sprite Backup app but customized for SE).
But there's an easy way out -- step 1. root, step 2. install Titanium Backup, step 3. delete Backup & Restore.
Voila.
No adverse effects after 4+ wks on this setup. Titanium is even better as a backup app, so don't feel like you're missing out on anything if you delete B&R.
simply ignore it in atk and it will do the job.

how can you say titanium is better? backup and restore saves bookmarks, call log, texts, apps, settings and mms.
It does'nt actually save your apps, it only creates a list over them to easy reinstall from market, titanium on the other hand i beleive actually backs up your apps + data so you dont loose anything i.ex highscores, settings, etc.

As does Titanium, but you also get the option of multiple backups per app, setting, phonebook or log, as well as the ability to uinstall apps, including system apps, ability to freeze apps and pretty nifty scheduling. Beats B&R in my book. (not that there's anything wrong with b&r by itself, though).
Of course, to get all of it, you need root access.

Is there anyway to backup everything (all settings, all apps, all data, home screens, shortcuts, BT pairings etc.) on GB and have it perfectly restored after a new OS version upgrade (ICS) ? I have been researching this on various sites but can't find a clear answer. I know if I root my Note I can create a NANDROID backup image. But when restored it restores the OS as well. Correct? Or is there a way to restore a NANDROID backup with out restoring the OS? Or will using Titanium or My Backup Pro accomplish what I'm asking for? THANX!
You are correct on nandroid, no way to do it without the OS. You will have to re set up all of your settings and bt pairings afaik. Titanium will restore all of your installed apps, but not how you had everything set up. As for texts, there are some SMS backup apps on the market. Some launchers also provide the ability to backup how you had them set up, but I'm not sure which ones, and if you're not using it currently it wouldn't do much good anyways. Also, if you're doing the update through kies, it will wrote everything off your phone, so be sure to transfer your photos to your computer before you do. Also, if you use titanium, you would have to transfer that file to your computer before using kies.

Maybe I'm repeating this... Titanium does not keep the settings? I dont particularly like Titanium because I want to select my important apps and do a batch backup to my SD card. I want it to keep the settings and logins too. Then, when I get a new rom, I can load the app, settings, log ins and everything.
Is this not possible?
I use 128 bit passwords that are about 30 characters long, so I end up texting myself my AndroidMarket password and using the online market to push the apps to the phone over wifi. Then I use USB to copy over a KeePass database and load KeePass Droid to start setting all my logins for VOIP, emails, media apps, etc. since it has a notification bar user/pswd dropdown to copy. It is more time consuming than I prefer, it makes it impossible to really try new roms that often, keepass makes it at least bearable.
Would you care to tell me how people manage to use nightly builds and things of that nature while not spending hours plugging in all the settings?
Titanium restores app data.
The first batch of each sub section is what i use.
Backup:
Backup all user apps
Restore:
Restore missing apps with data
Theoretically you could backup all system data that appears with green txt I'm the list of programs in tibu, which would include things such as Wi-Fi password and bt pairings i believe.
but if you were to have issues by restoring that, because restoring system data can be funky sometimes, you'd have to factory reset and start over, so that part is up to you.
I don't do anything other than the batches i mentioned above.
If you are upgrading ICS from a stock GB then you won't lose your app, its data and contact.
But settings, home keys and shortcuts will be initiated.
I don't know how to back it up but I usually screen shot those and then just redo when I have a new rom installed.
Background:
I had a Nexus S. Got some games and got pretty far in them. I did not root the phone. Now I have an N4. I want to pick up where I left off on the new phone with regards to the games.. let's say, They Need To Be Fed as an example.
Now, neither phone is rooted, so obviously this complicates things, but it is not impossible. I can easily use Carbon to backup my app data and restore it onto the new phone without requiring a root. However I want to explore alternative methods.
So in a perfect situation, I would like the app data (and/or the app itself) to be backed up into one nice file that can be saved onto the new phone and then opened up to put the saved data where it needs to be. I'm not sure, but do .apk's contain app data as well? Could I save my current progress on TNTBF along with the app itself into a .apk and then extract the file on my new phone to continue where I left off?
What Carbon does is create a folder specific for the app and its data, which is a bunch of files I'm not familiar with, and requires Carbon to restore the data itself. Although this app is phenomenal and will be my last resort, I'd like something that doesn't require the app itself to restore the data. I used to use something called Ultimate Backup I think. When I selected to backup an app, it would save a .apk to the sd card. I'm not sure if it was backing up just the app or the app data as well, but if it did save the app data then that would be optimal.
Is anyone familiar with anything -- app or program -- that can do something like this? Backup app data that can be restored without the app itself on unrooted devices?
From my research, it seems the answer is 'no'. But maybe something recent has come up!
