[Q] Dx2 Cant Root - Motorola Droid X2

Ok, i'm not a noob but i'm not the best at this stuff either. i have searched for the past 3 days. Got my DX2 the other day coming from a droid incredible. Day one of the incredible i had it rooted, then had it S-off not far after.
Day one with the dx, havent done much research. Get the phone, check for system updates, it says it has an update for 2.3.3. O yay, i don't have to wait to get gb on here. woohoo. DL it while at work since i shouldn't be playing on the phone anyway.
Get home. go online to try see what i have to do to get root so i can get some screen shots going and just all around get it back to the feel of having control of my phone. see a few ways of root, all of them saying to sbf back to 2.2. Well damn, wish i hadnt updated. Ok, lets try this sbf thing.
IDK why, but it won't let me sbf. Ive tried. Several times. No dice, always says failed.
Lets keep looking. O yay, a one click method for the ota GB?!?! woohoo!! i try it....try it several times. try it more times.....WTMFHELL!!???!!!?? i got nothing. i don't know why it wont let me root it...but it wont. if anyone has any advice, any tips...anything at all, i'm all ears. i've tried sbf, i've tried the adb commands but for some reason it won't let me use adb, says java isn't in the path, cant fix it. tried one click, different variations of one click. i got nothing
build number 4.5.1a-dtn-117-15
if anyone can help me i would greatly GREATLY APPRECIATE IT
sorry for the long wind
thanks for your time

There is a one click root that i just used on a freinds phone and it worked great and you don't have to do any of that sbf'ing or anything...

not fast enough

Thats the thing, I've done that one. 2 versions of it. Said I should have root. No dice. Checked through connect bot just to see. still have the $ instead of the #. No busy box, no nothing.

is ther an app called superuser in your app drawer with a kinda droid pirate icon?

Did you install moto drivers? Maybe its an adb problem...adb can be tricky what os are you using on computer?
Check this out...

I have it. Got excited. Tried to use drocap and it actually asked for su permissions. Gave it, won't take pic. Opened titanium backup, no root rights.

go to market and download app called busybox installer, it will give you options to what version of busybox you want...select 1.18.2 and try to install.

Won't open. Can't run, may be because it doesn't have root rights

Maybe try to sbf to froyo 2.2 and then install P3's Rooted GB update, have you tried that?

it won't let me sbf, keep getting a failure every time i've tried.

does it try to sbf then fail? Does the phone show up in RSD?
Try a different sbf file maybe the one you have is corrupt.

WWW.k33pw1shen.WordPress.com I have all the files over there
Dx2RGB.E

The only reason I referred you there is someone commented on my page that they had tried a couple different things and mine was the only one that worked
Dx2RGB.E

tried it using a different sbf file and a different usb port on my comp and its in the process of makine me feel like it just may work.
just rebooted and
bootlooped. lol
recovery
full wipe
2.2
thanks for your help, greatly appreciated.

Glad we could help
Dx2RGB.E

i know i'm late, but are you sure you were on charging mode, i know its a bit out there but that could effect.... ALOT

Side note, none of the screen cap apps on the market work on the x2. I believe it's a tegra 2 issue.
Someone wrote an app called "Screen Grabber" for the Atrix that works perfectly on the x2.

question, why dont you wanna update?
I have another theory, UNINSTALL OR FREEZE BLUR UPDATER, IT MAY WORK OR IT MAY KILL YOUR PHONE, GOOD LUCK
the reason why i don't want to update it's because i don't have time right now to mess with a broken phone... my phone is my life and any downtime is pretty much not needed right now due to a raw update.

Is your phone still the stock version? Or have you rooted it and what not? I have to be honest, I was a bit worried when I saw everyone posting about problems they had with P3's pre-rooted and flashing the zip file. Honestly, I left my phone alone, other than uninstalling NFS, let's golf and other trial software VZW had pre-loaded on my phone. I didn't wanna mess with it, so I figured since I'm still stock, I'll just wait. The update pushed this morning, installed with zero problems, and works absolutely fantastically. I haven't had any problems people have mentioned in any of these threads.
I hope that helps.
Back up all your apps and settings. Factory reset and dont acceptances motorolas terms. Someone mentioned that on another thread. Can't remember who.
That may not be a solution for you tho.

You have to delete/rename otacerts.zip (which requires root access).
from adb:
Code:
adb shell
$ su
# cd /system/etc/security
# mv otacerts.zip otacerts.zip.bak
# exit
$ exit
and of course it's a good idea to have a backup of otacerts.zip just in case.
Please note, that my phone is currently not in a "working" state and that the directory may not be correct. but i'm pretty sure it is.
i've heard freeze fota.apk, then i heard freeze blurupdater_vzw.apk. i forgot about otacerts.zip.
at this point, i'm pretty sure no one knows which of the above, if any, stops updates. me, i'm freezing all three and loading boostrap and cwm recovery.
I froze Updater 2.2.2 ... worked fine
I want to do this too. No problems at all?

I can't download any apps from Market. I'm assuming that freezing "updater 2.2.2" causes this issue.

Does gingerbreak app work

I just switched from droid incredible 2 to this wondering how to achieve root is only way to sbf to froyo and flash p3s
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
At this point that is our only option. It's not that scary!
Sent from my DROID X2
When I put the device in dev mode and plug it in to pc I don't see the normal notification in notification bar I tried gingerbreak app and it just hangs
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
Gingerbreak only works on froyo for x2. Ironic I know but that's what it is.
And if u are factory 2.2.2 u dint need to sbf. Only sbf if u did any tweaking or are 2.3.3 to get back to froyo. Once u are 2.2.2 rooting is a breeze and flashing prerooted gingerbread zip is simple.
JUST FOLLOW DIRECTIONS EXACTLY.
Mike does a nice job with simple instructions here http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x2-hacks/163074-pre-rooted-gingerbread.html
Just make sure when using system recovery to plug phone into THE WALL SOCKET.many people miss this and can't figure out what they did wrong lol
Also has a link to the instructions posted here for more in depth and trouble shooting read thru that thread. Don't overcomplicate the steps. Just follow exactly and it's easy
Mind if I ask why the switch?
Thank you. I will have to do this tomorrow my internet is out and the switch is because I am not a fan of htc also really wanted dx2 for mirror mode dual core and such dinc2 is def a great phone just wanted something different always been a fan of moto so we will see

Yeah to sbf u will need the computer. I got lucky and didn't take the OTA to 2.3.3 so was able to do it with just my.phone. which is.nice since my computer is trash right now lol
Good.luck and like I said. Be PRECISE with the instructions. I wrote them all down word.for word and checked.off each thing so I didn't miss anything. Even the simple steps. That is where most people have had a problem. Miss one little thing.like plug your.phone into wall and ut wont work.
If u r 2.2.2 u can do it within the hour tho. PM me if u are and want to do it.

[Q] I'm having a serious issue

Droid X2, preinstalled with 2.3.3 The phone belongs to a dear friend, and I've screwed it up apparently. I finally got it rooted via Visionary this morning, remarkably easy once I took the time to actually read. Quick and painless flash of Eclipse 0.5, and then onto apps, mods and 'pretties'. Well the last thing I tried to do before turning it back over to its owner, I tried to change the font. Apparently this is where I went wrong. It's been a soft brick ever since. It will load the "M Dual Core" screen, and that is absolutely it. I can navigate into recovery but whatever Nandroid I had created isn't showing up there. Please tell me there's something I can do, I've tried SBFand whatever, but I'm sure I'm not doing it right. I'd be willing to sling a few bucks your way if you were able to help get remedied. Thanks in advance. We can do text chat, or voice. I'll be home from work around 9pm Central Time. Thanks so much.
If you created a nandroid, you might not be able to find it because Eclipse 5 swaps the sd cards. Try again and you may find it in the opposite directory.
If you ate trying to this thru stock recovery (holding buttons when booting) then you won't be able to restore from there. At this point our only option is BSR, the thing you used to flash eclipse. To get there, power the phone off and then plug it into a wall charger. If it loads, you can do a wipe or restore from there.
You might also be able to wipe data from stock recovery.

What worries me is that I have noticed that when I flash eclipse after a data wipe it seems as though I have to go use system recovery app and press install recovery first again before I can get BSR to show up again with off phone plugged in. Hope this isn't what happen to OP or else sbf is only option.
And if u r sbf make sure on ur phone u r using power and vol up to get where u need to be to sbf. And plug phone into computer AFTER opening rsdlite.

There is an app that works to root 2.3.3 on the x2 without a pc?
Edit: everything I could find easily on that visionary app says it only works on 1.7 firmware and under, and all the posts are over a year old. Not sure how he got this to work for him

I was wondering exactly same thing. If yes OP needs to post a link ASAP for testing and confirmation immediately
I think that visionary root app is what may have him in a bind at the moment... He definitely needs to post where he got it and what he read to lead him to believe it would work... His only option, IMHO, is to sbf and go from there....

LOL! What you want me to post the whole tutorial for the guy here??? But can you really blame me??? I have become a full believer in SBF'ing for any issue I run into tho...
If "system recovery" is installed and "recovery mode" has been set(if only once) then a "battery pull" and a "plugging in" of the charger will trigger BSR. But not if "charge mode" was last cmd exec.
Batt pull may screw up dates when restoring, so it is best to set recov. mode each time needed.

Yeah, no sleep for 3 days, that's why I said that. I meant to say, the Pete Souza Method. But yeah I got it all fixed with DAG425's SBF Tutorial. It was probably the easiest to wrap my mind around, well thought out tutorial.
In a side note, regretfully I seem to have fallen for the X2....sorry HTC. lol

DX2 update while rooted

My DX2 is rooted on 2.2.2 and at least twice a day there's an update thing that pops up in order to update to 1.3.232 and I can either install it now or postpone it. I've been postponing it for a while now. I was just wondering if I try to update it, will the phone be fine. Will my root access just go away and the phone will be updated? Sorry if this question has been asked already. I looked around, but couldn't find anything about it.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Just accept it, what's the worse that can happen? You have to SBF? Doubt it. You'll probably have an unusable SU icon in your drawer, but the 1-click root will fix that up.
Get crazy my man. Accept that update.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Update using P3's rooted GB instead of take that update it will let you keep root
DX2 Update
Yes. Your phone will have Gingerbread installed and the root will go away. But fear not, just follow the instructions here on how to root GB on DX2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234973
Alright. Thanks guys. I'll just try the update
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Okay, so I just tried to update it and when it was showing the progress bar it stopped about 1/4 of the way through and then the Android dude had an exclamation point, so basically, it failed
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Do you have any system apps frozen and/or deleted? If so, I believe that will stop three ota from downloading.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Thread moved
yeah make sure everything is unfrozen. If you deleted apps you'll have to SBF. Which at that point you could just SBF to GB and avoid the OTA all together.
I did have some apps frozen and I unfroze them and tried again, but yet again, it failed
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
like they said above... if would be easiest to do the neccessary app backups and just sbf with the p3 gingerbread...
I don't think it will update with root... Just sbf to P3's gingerbread rom and you will be set to go.

Yes, it will update with root but you will then lose root. But all you have to do after that is use the one cluck root method. I would make a nandroid. Backup after that so it will save you time if you start flashing ROMS and need to restore again.
I don't even care about having root access anymore. I just wanna update, but it still fails even after unfreezing all the frozen apps I had:/
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
You must have a few tiny changes still there that you forgot about. This is what happened to me on my og DROID. Just sbf P3's rooted gingerbread and you will be set. If you need help with sbf there is like 5 threads on it on this forum.
Cheers.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Well, I was just trying to keep it simple you know just hit install and there I go, but I guess not. I even tried deleting all my root apps to see if that would do the trick, but still nope
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Yeah, root sometimes does some tricky stuff with your phone. And it isn't all that complicated to sbf, download the files plug your phone in and click start and your done. Its super easy.
Cheers.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
And um I think you can go into your build.prop and change your forward facing android version, so it tricks the phone into thinking it doesn't need to update. That is if you want to stay on froyo, look around on google if you want to go this route.
Cheers.

sbf to 2.3.3
all you need is RSD and the sbf file for 2.3.3, if it doesn't work the first time try it again. sometimes ya gotta try it twice. and if you want to root it once more there is a one click solution for gingerbread.
here's the link for 2.3.3 sbf

It's 3:05am in NC and as I was getting ready to leave work in go to check for the update in About phone and it is a available now. Got the update last night when I went to bed at 12am. Since I just got the phone two days ago, I was only rooted on 2.3.3 with nothing else done to it. It updated no problems, but I had to re-root after the install was done. Only things I've noticed so far is that everything seems a lot laggier than before. I still need to install recovery and debloat though. I hope that will help.
