Hello!
I'm trying to make my own Rom right now. With dsixda's Kitchen it isn't very hard to do so I thought I'd just give it a try. I'm taking a rooted official Update (Version: 2.10.405.2) as my base. Adding busybox runparts, the /data/app functionality, a2sd+, the custom bootanimation functionality etc. isn't a problem. Removing some apps like Maps, Facebook, Teeter (and so on) and adding some like Rom Manager, Neocore or Quadrant isn't a problem, too. But if I want to implement a theme like the Carbon Espresso Mod or a theme I made with the UOT Kitchen I'm getting bootloops at booting the phone. Here's what I do: I unzip the folder (for example a theme made with the UOT Kitchen) and I copy over the framework-res.apk from the unzipped folder to my Working Folder of the Kitchen (to system/framework) and I overwrite the original framework-res.apk.
And NO: I didn't choose a battery mod or a bootanimation in the UOT Kitchen....
Hope you guys can help me
I might be wrong but doesn't the new file have to be signed? I know there is a signing option in the kitchen.

It's a system .apk so it doesn't have to be signed.
I can't shed any light on the subject, but here's a bump.
Are you replacing the whole "framework-res.apk" file? If so then you will need to resign your entire ROM. Why? When you change a system file ("framework-res.apk", "com.htc.framework.apk", "twframework-res", "rosie.apk", etc.) it no longer has a matching "signature" for all the files it serves images to. Plug your phone into your computer and open up "ddms" in your android_sdk > tools folder to watch what happens when the phone boots up.
A workaround (The way I do it, it's more fun IMHO) is to open up your .apk files in 7zip (or if you're on a mac BetterZip) and add the images from the themed .apk to your stock .apk. This way makes it so your original .apk has the same signature as your other system files yet has the new images from the other files that you wanted. I've had a lot of luck with this method. I don't know if it will still work if you change any .xml files as I have not messed with those yet.
I've subscribed to this thread so if you have any questions post back here or you can PM me if you want. I'm on XDA all day, every day so I'll try to help as much as I can.
Thanks for all the answers! Especially to you, mbobino. Is there a way to sign the whole Rom new? When I make my Rom at the End, the Kitchen signs it automatically, doesn't it? The idea with the images is very good, but if I want to implement a theme like Carbon Espresso it isn't that easy, 'cause Carbon Espresso isn't just a few images. There are several .xml's etc.
The reason you boot loop is mis matched resource ID's in the public.xml file. If you decompile the framework using apktool after adding your images using an archiver then recompile apktool will update the public file for you which saves you from pulling ID''s for every image. I have a video tutorial of how to set up apktool and decompile framework in my Rom thread. Changing images in app apk's won't cause you to boot loop just messing with the framework will.

The kitchen signs the .zip that you flash when you build it. It does not sign any .apks for you on its own. However, there is an option to sign .apks within the kitchen.
In my opinion, taking all of the images and figuring out how it all works is fun. I feel like I've already learned quite a bit from just digging around and moving files around.
As for the .xml files, you can decompile the .apk and edit them and then recompile the .apk. I'm actually looking into this today. It sounds like some work but hopefully I'll get it figured out.
Sounds like fun indeed So, I'll just have to try it. Where can I find the "Settings" for the Notification Bar? Thanks
The variois status*.xml files in the res/layout folder of the framework-res.apk and the status*.smali files in the services.jar.
What? If I want to implement a Theme made with the UOT Kitchen (without battery) I should just copy over those files to my existing res-framework.apk OR copy over the whole res-framework.apk (the new one) and sign it?
EDIT: Just tried it with a theme from the UOT Kitchen and it worked perfectly. I've just signed the res-framework.apk and the htc.com.resources.apk (or whatever) in the Kitchen, flashed it on my Phone and it just worked like a Charm. But I have got a 50% Transparent Notification Bar and all the system icons (Battery and time/date) are still black and not transparent! Has anyone got a idea where to change this? (.xml or whatever)...And does anyone know where I can find the HTC Wallpapers? I want to change them a little bit

HeyItsLou, I looked up your ROM thread but couldn't locate the video tutorial.... do you mind providing the url? Specifically, I am trying to add to the list of wallpapers in a ROM. (I have setup apktool but not sure where/which folder to add my wallpapers in Framework-res.apk Launcher.apk before recompiling/signing). Thanks.
You COULD use the Theme Porter by daneshm90. It will only port the PNG s for it so things like clock colour n stuff will be lost, but it will get you alot closer...

Thanks! But like I've written before in my Edit, I made it. The bigger theme (Carbon Espresso) wasn't a problem, too. I just had to sign the .apk's in system/app and system/framework (the kitchen doesn't do it by itself. You have to choose the option to sign a single .apk and then look, where the system/framework .apk's are...). Works great now!

I don't sign system files or apps and apkmanager among other threads I've read say not to. Im on a rooted backflip. I find I only have to sign third party apps to install.
Why do you have to sign YOUR files?
Sorry for answering that late. Had a few things to do, so I wasn't online very often
If you want to cook an App into your Rom (NeoCore for example), then you don't have to sign it. You can just copy it into data/app. But if you want to change the whole framework-res.apk of the Rom, you have to sign it. 'Cause if you don't sign it, you'll get a Bootloop. The framework-res.apk is a very important part of the Rom, so it has to "fit" to the others. There are some ID's which have to match. Otherwise it won't work. That's how I understood it
Another Question: Has anybody got an Idea where to change the things that are coming, when you first start the phone with a new Rom (the "installation" of the Rom)? I wan't to write: "Welcome to DomiKamp's Rom!" Or something like that...

I was curious about this too. I always edit the framework-res of any ROM I flash using a custom set of images I have and have never signed the apk afterwards and it has always worked. Maybe cause I'm only replacing images? I usually do this with framework-res and twframework-res and they both can sometimes grow by 1MB or more. Just my experience.

I think that in order to do the "welcome to" thing you'll have to edit the update-script file. I'm not 100% on it though. Look at a cm Rom and see what all is in there.

First and foremost, before installing this ZIP through Tenfar's recovery, you MUST have GingerBlur v4 already installed!
GingerBlur files/instructions can be found HERE!
* Please DO NOT ask for assistance with rooting or installing GingerBlur in this thread, follow the link above and ask there!
**THIS HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED BY ME (ON MY OWN HANDSET) USING GINGERBLUR v4 (4.1.83 based)**

[EDIT] Running this with GingerBlur 4.5 - working great with NO issues..
Nice work man!! This looks great!!
Thanks! I JUST finished updating the OP with install instructions and I also attached a RAR file with the dock/icons to use if you wanted to make LauncherPro look just like it does in the screenshots.
Also, while I like red and/or blue themes, my wife likes purple so I'll probably be working on a GrapeBlur theme next.
If anyone tries pushing these files to a release other than 4.1.57 (such as Adeo or Gingerblur based on 4.1.52) I would be interested to know the results!
Looks great sir, thanks for the work.
Looks great man, thanks for putting this together. One question though, is it posible to make a blue theme as I love blue!
Thanks for great work! One question though, any errors during the deodexing process?

I had one error, I think it was on PhotoEditor.apk and PhotoEditor.odex. I've seen or used a built-in photo editor so I just removed those then restarted the deodex process for apps and it completed successfully.
just tried deodexing and yes, getting the same errors from the two apks as well. Ok thanks for the heads up will try again
Successfully applied the theme!
Found 1 bug. The clock in notification bar is black in mine instead of white. Any idea why?
This might be a nobrainer but, if I change the icon files inside the apk and then push it to my phone will it still work? In this way will I be able to make my own 4.1.57 themes?
hey.. i am sorry to ask this how am i suppose to install the grapeblur and the launcherpro.. i have no idea .. i am soo sorry to ask such a dum question.. but this is my first time with an android
okay I may be kinda slow how do I make use of the launcherpro files?
hey how would you install cherryblur in the first place.. i have my phone deodexed and all but having trouble knowing how to install cherryblur...

You added a few icons to the /drawable-hdpi directory. Do you actually use them via the xml files, or are they just remains of whatever framework-res.apk you used?

yes
just get framework-res.apk, back it up, open it with winrar.
drag and drop the files, of the same name, that you would like to replace into the open winrar window. choose normal and 'add and replace', then close the window to save. replace the one in system/framework with your modified version.
Be sure to set the priviledges correctly after you copy into system/framework.
They should match the original, full read and user write.
Thats how I made this.
Edit: Every time I replace the framework-res.apk I lose my google, twitter, and facebook accounts. Anyone know why, all I'm doing is replacing images.

When you long press on any of the icons in the dockbar of LauncherPro you should see an option to change the icon. You need to have the icons/dock I attached saved to your sdcard ahead of time so you can choose "custom" for the icon and select the graphic you want to use.
For the dock you go to Menu -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Dock Background
* Pretty sure that's correct, but my phone is in on the charger in my bedroom where my wife is sleeping so I don't want to accidentally wake her up.

packaging up a ROM is fairly simple.
for a ROM .zip there are a few main components:
1) *required* /system directory (contains all your ROM files)
2) *required* META-INF/com/google/android/ with two files, updater-script and update-binary. updater-script file instructs the update-binary on how to process/install your ROM. the custom recovery will look for these two files and execute them.
3) *optional* a kernel in the .zip to be flashed
hope that helps! good luck on publishing your ROM!

yes, you could take a ROM and only replace certain files / apps with the ones you've modified.
the ROM "cool stuff" while it flashes is all done in the updater-script file i mentioned in #2 of the required ROM files in my previous post above.
the ROM I maintan and publish for EVO 3D is 100% stock with root/su binary added, busybox and a bunch of linux arm developer binaries in /system/xbin.
my stock ROM would be a great base for you to start modifying and experimenting with!
1) swap out the apk/files in the .zip with the ones you've modified.
2) modify the updater-script file with your syntax
3) let us know how it goes!
[ROM] joeykrim-original-1.2.0 Odex *Stock Rooted 2.08.651.2* Aug 21st 2011
on windows, 7zip is a great GUI application for swap/editing files inside a .zip without having to extract the whole thing.
on linux, i'd just unzip the whole .zip to a directory and then swap out the files/edit the files in that directory, then zip up. also, i think ubuntu archive manager (default GUI for .zip files) lets you modify/edit files inside the .zip without having to extract the whole thing.
hope that helps!

fancy word i used in place of code/text. you can open the updater-script inside of the .zip file with a text editor. the updater-script file uses the edify scripting language.
there are a lot of guides on how to use edify and what each phrase means. google the terms, "edify android guide" and there should be a bunch of results. one of the results which looks fairly decent - Edify Script Syntax Explained
hope that helps! good luck!

Alright so progress is being made and its going very well. Only things Im stuck on now is:
1. How do I add certain apps like astro or ES file explorer WITHOUT putting them into the system/apps folder??
2. How do I change the background at boot so that its not the colorful flares that Sprint has on there.
3. How do I remove the 3D apps game apk?
Once I have those figured out I think my ROM will be ready for the public.

1. android package manager monitors two locations for .apk files and will install them as soon as they appear in these two directories: /system/app and /data/app. if you want your rom to install .apk files to /data/app, you'll need to add the package_extract_dir command to your updater-script for /data and also create a data/app directory in the ROM zip file and put whatever apk files you want added in the data/app dir of the ROM zip file.
2. For Android boot animations the system looks in 3 locations in this order. 1) /data/local/bootanimation.zip, 2) /system/media/bootanimation.zip and 3) framework-res.apk . Since there are no bootanimation.zip files on our device, I'm assuming the sprint boot animation is stored in the framework-res.apk file. No worries, as placing any bootanimation file in either /data/local or /system/media will take priority over the Sprint animation in framework-res.apk.
3. 3D Games apk file is located here: /system/app/PGAWidget_HTCEvo3D_Sprint_v100.apk . Simply remove that apk file from /system/app inside the ROM .zip and it will not be loaded.
Let us know if you have any other questions. Hope that helps and good luck in the publishing!

Man you are the BOMB.COM!!!!
And for 2. I wasnt looking to replace the boot animation. I kinda like the Sprint one. I was trying to replace the actual wallpaper that the phone boots into. So at the home screen I can have my own wallpaper that I choose for my ROM.
Also for 1. Do I need to create a unmount script like the one for /system? Or do I just add the script you mentioned and that is it?
Thanks so much for your help man. I dont think I would have gotten this far without you!!

Oh, I misunderstood for 2. For the actual wallpaper .. I did a few quick google searches and haven't come up with anything super helpful. Based on this blog post Appears there are two possible locations for the default wallpaper images to be stored, either in the Launcher.apk or in /system/frameworks/framework.jar. Unfortunately, I'm not able to experiment on the device and search more thoroughly. If nobody posts back a better answer I'll look into this tonight.
1. Yea, it would be best practice to mount data, package extract dir /data and then unmount data. You should be able to copy the mount/unmount commands used for system and change the mount points to data and for the mount command change the device point for data .. off the top of my head I think its one number higher, but not positive. cat /proc/partitions to see the exact device mount point.
Hope that helps!

To debug flashing errors while in the recovery, open adb shell and type:
Code:
cat /tmp/recovery.log
The recovery log has more details and usually the exact line of code where it failed. Feel free to paste this into pastebin and link up here, or paste into the thread and we can help troubleshoot.
Another step deeper into troubleshooting and debugging land of ROM development! Hope that helps!

Nah but Good Thread guys!
Alright, just got my hands on a system dump courtesy of loglud so I will be posting files (text files will include content that peaked my interest) here so me and other devs can see what we are able to toy with.
systemdump download link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/SystemDump.zip
Current list:
/system/media/bnapps_icons\ <-- we can mod the app icons that come with the device so we can make it less-sucky.
/system/etc/bluetooth/blacklist.conf <-- referencing the bluetooth chip meaning we just have to find a way to activate it
/system/app/settings.apk <-- anyone think they can actually replace this with another gingerbread apk or decompile and discover if there is a custom intent? Warning: It does NOT work at all. I suggest against swapping the apk's out as it causes a force close.
/system/bin/bootanimation *Was told where it searches for bootanimations first so goto this thread for a new bootanimation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361735

Alright, just got my hands on a system dump courtesy of loglud so I will be posting files (text files will include content that peaked my interest) here so me and other devs can see what we are able to toy with.
Current list:

/system/etc/bluetooth/blacklist.conf <-- referencing the bluetooth chip meaning we just have to find a way to activate it

Nice finds. Bluetooth will be intesting to test (about to do it right now).
As you know the Nook has a heavily modified framework, so I don't know if the stock settings app will work (but I'm about to find out and probably fark up my tablet).
Let me know how it goes anlog.

Hmm . . . let me get a hold of it and I'll look at it tomorrow, I've already taken the rest of the week off (Diablo III beta key came in tonight).
You may not need to change out the settings.apk but just add another one to it.
I decided to hold off on swapping the settings.apk. Losing access to the real settings app with all of the Nook options might not be a good idea.
The main reason I wanted a full settings menu was to be able to get into the accounts sync settings, but I found an app to launch it.
Warning: It does NOT work at all. I suggest against swapping the apk's out as it causes a force close.

It's a binary file. This app executes bootanimation resources.
Example: on T-Mobile MyTouch 4G resources are in /system/customize//resource/htc_bootanimation.zip
You should search for bootanimation.zip and you can edit this archive

I read note, if you want edit system apps like Settings.apk you should sign them by personal keys only...
I was looking through and couldnt find a bootanimation.zip in the system so I'm checking the data folders now.
edit: What the hell, still can't find it.

I was using Absolite system to see if I could replace the bootanimation because I couldn't find it either. I did manage to make it go away and just had the splash screen. I'll look into this further today as well. I'm starting to get ideas as to which files you can and can't replace right now. Some will force an immediate reboot and get stuck in a boot loop. I also am trying to find what triggers and handles the home button menu, I am sure it is in the framework. I have framework.jar and services.jar decompiled and going through those as well. Reviewing logcats to see what I can track down. I have some other interesting stuff going as well

Hmmm... Usually bootanimation is in /data/local/ or /system/media. May be it has different name?
/system/bin/bootanimation is the program that actually displays the bootanimation.
Normally it plays the contents of /system/media/bootanimation.zip, but it can also be hardcoded to play a fixed animation or designed to play a completely different format. (Such as on Samsung devices, where it only plays Samsung's QMG format until you replace the program.)

Don't take this the wrong way, but I really hate you right now!
I tried getting in on the Diablo III beta, no luck!
Here is a file of some interest, it it looks to be encrypted because it would be of interest.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
.p files are encrypted .m files. Not sure if anything exists out there to crack into that one, but I am sure it would tell some very interesting information and possibly allow hi-jacking the factory restore process?
Anyone familiar with .p files (pcode files) ?
---------- Post added at 12:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:08 PM ----------
Also of interest are some .xem3 files under /system/lib/ducati
base_image_app_m3.xem3 --- 57 mb
base_image_sys_m3.xem3 --- 1.5 mb
I think could be system image files possibly from the little bit of research I have done. Due to the size of one of these (57 mb) and the name of the file, I was thinking maybe this is where the restore was getting it's base image from, but until I dig further I am not sure of that. The size of the file is what got my attention, much larger than other files in lib. That's half the size of CM7 in just one file.
Edit: These now look to be possibly drivers/firmware/images for Ducati and/or Pandaboard ? That's a large driver file....
The .p file is very much of interest I would think.

It looks like the normal XML files are not controlling the layout and it is done through the smali files to get the custom actions and layout. A separate app to access development may be best for now, as we have been doing.
Unless someone edits the smali files of course, that's possible but will prove tedious and time consuming unless you have a lot of experience with these.
If you review the logcats from going into settings, you will see which smali files are involved.
I have almost a full system dump on an ftp so ill see about letting it be accessed.
Sent by breaking the sound barrier
Please upload full system dump from Nook Tablet
Please upload full system dump from Nook Tablet
How-to
1. Get root
2. Run terminal (enter su if symbol $ -> it will be changed to #)
3. Execute command mount
4. From list of partitions search for /system
Code:
Example: /dev/block/mmcblk0p27 /system ext4 ro,relatime
5. Dump it to sdcard with command dd
Code:
Example: dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p27 of=/sdcard/system.img
It dumps only system image not personal data...
I'll just upload a .zip to dropbox.
Is there a sanim.zip anywhere? If so, that's the bootani. If not, ill sink back to silence lol
Sent from my Samsung Legendary 4G, a Universe UTES phone, running "two.three.five"
I looked through and there are only a few .zip files but none of them actually contained a bootanimation. It really is annoying lol. This device is such a bastardized version of android, I can't wait to get past the bootloader. lol.
Finally! After days of struggling to figure out how to modify my ROM's framework-res.apk and create a working flashable update.zip to install the framework-res.apk changes, I have finally figured out how (big thanks to the guys here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20962080#post20962080) and have created an automated script to help others struggling with the same problem.
Framework Flasher 1.1.4
Feel free to download and experiment with it. This is my first gift to the XDA/Android Hacking community, and I plan on doing more. I just want to test the waters for now Feedback would be nice. Let me know if I've helped you in some way!
---------------------------
What does it do?
It extracts your framework-res.apk file and allows you to edit the files. After editing, the script will compile, sign the apk, create your update.zip with the correct structure for flashing, and then sign the .zip. Everything you need to modify and flash your framework-res.apk file.
How do I use it?
Download the .zip from the link below and extract it somewhere on your PC. Drag the framework-res.apk file that you want to modify and/or flash into the /place-framework-res-here/ directory. Double-click on RunMe.bat and off you go! Do the steps (1-5) in order and you shouldn't have any problems.
Who needs this?
A LOT of people according to how many google searches I did in the past 3-4 days.
Will it work for files other than framework-res.apk?
Currently, no. However it would be easy to implement that functionality if I saw that people would benefit from it.
I found a bug... what do I do?
Post it in this topic. I'll do what I can to make continual updates as long as I see people are benefiting from it. I'm sure there are bugs in it somewhere, so just let me know.
Where do I download this snazzy piece of software?

The little disclaimer
If you download this tool, please say thanks! Not only does it motivate me to continue to improve this software, but it also let's me know how many users are using it! Thanks!
This script is mainly intended for use with editing script files (xml, etc.), and normal (non 9png) images. 9pngs have been successfully repacked using this tool! If you run into any problems, be sure to make it known!
This tools was created to work with the Droid X2. If you are experiencing problems using it, first ensure that you are in fact using a Droid X2.

Hello
This is an awesome little tool you got here. I haven't tried it yet but I'll likely give it a shot eventually.
You should add functionality for SystemUI.apk, that's the other "real big" file people like to edit. Just a suggestion based on what I know about theming
Very nice!
So r u telling me this will modify everything including the. 9 png images..also can u get into the xml files as well or images only...i use apk manager and with the. 9 pngs u cannot touch the 9 patches or change the image without using draw 9 patch to ensure the apk will recompile

Not tested 9pngs with this, it's mainly intended for scripting (xml files, etc. along with normal non 9png images). I've updated the OP to include a little disclaimer stating this fact. Thanks for pointing that out.
.9.png seems to work
Thanks Wesf90 for the tool. I was curious about the .9.png myself. Looking at the script it decompiles and compiles using apktool just like the apkmanager script does so just by looking at your RunMe.bat it looks like it would be fine. I did test it out to be sure though. So I took the framework-res from eclipse 2.0.3 changes some 9.png files and recompiled without any issues. It is important to note that you need to be careful when editing 9.png files to NOT change the black "patches" around the edge of those images. Doing so will cause bad patches and will generate errors when re-compiling. So for example if you apply a filter to the entire image double check that the color value of the black patches are still 000000 (I've done this ). If you don't mess with the patches all should be fine. It also depends on the original framework-res you are starting with. If you use one that has broken 9.pngs in it to start then you will need to fix them before re-compiling (I've done this too ).
Nice work. I especially like that step 4 that creates the update.zip. That is not in apkmanager that I've been using. So following steps 1,2,3,4 sure does make it simpler for a beginner which was your goal. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the test run. I've updated to OP to state that 9pngs have been tested.
Creating the update.zip was the hardest part for me, learning how to use update-script and updater-script. Hopefully this will help everyone else get on the right path.
is it possible, that after the editing was done, to simply push the framework to its place? without flashing recovery?
Dude XDA did a writeup on this.. but the article states there is no. 9 compatibility .... which is not true your program decompiles just like apk manager and apk tool do... .9 can be edited the patches simply can't be touched.. making this an awesome little tool !!!

Sweet tool, just what I've been looking for
Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for this tool (button hit, donation forthcoming).
I tried this with my framework-res file from and ICS 4.0.1 ROM I'm running and it decompiles perfectly, but after I make edits and try and recompile, the script just closes.
I tried looking at the log in the folder of the tool and it didn't have any information except the date/time I ran the script.
Any thoughts? Would love to make use of this if you think it should work for me. Thanks again!

Yes, definitely possible if you have ADB access. I may add this feature, but the idea of the tool is primarily to allow users to create a flash-able file for their's, or others', phones. I'll put it on my to-do list though

Yeah I noticed that about the 9pngs in the article, however several people (including yourself) have stated that 9png's work fine. So hopefully XDA will eventually update the post.

Interesting. I plan on releasing another update soon, so send me the file you tried (I sent you a PM), I plan on weeding out small bugs quickly. Once the update is ready, hopefully I can have this bug fixed (or at least resolved)

Yes, you're absolutely correct. Once you go through the steps and create the update.zip file, simple place that file onto your sd card. Then flash the .zip in recovery.

Doesn't work for me. It says that echo is off.
Thanks wesf90. Going to DL, and check this out.
Work with any Android?
Will this work with any Android system, like the GS2? Sorry if I missed the answer somewhere above.
Thx.
