When I use the wifi tether app, I can download torrents just fine, but if I were to open firefox, chrome, etc., I cannot browse at all and I'd just get a loading page error as if there were no internet. Does anyone know what could be causing the problem?
Depends on the tethering app you're using, I'm pretty sure. Most tethering apps will allow you to browse for a certain amount of time for free and then lock you out. Normally it's only secure sites, but I'm sure some lock out completely if you don't pay.
If it's wifi tether, download a free one like OpenGarden or Barnacle.
If it's USB2PC, I can't help you. I don't know of a completely free one, but I use the paid version of PDANet pretty regularly without incident.
Also, try turning your firewall/antivirus off and see if the problem persists.
Hope some of that helps.

Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:

Download the latest. I have found this to be the best app for the job.
Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...

Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.

The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !
Another option for USB tethering would be PDANet. I use that for tethering my Mac
installed wifi-tether 3 beta2 (latest from google) to my rooted Thunderbolt stock ROM
I start wifi tether, computer connects, but when I open the browser it never loads a page
Use 2.0.7

I searched and searched, but found nothing. When I have my laptop connected via the Wifi Hotspot, sometimes the connection will hang and then time out. If I simply wake the screen up 99% of the time it will begin to download the data and my web page will render on my computer. I am on ATT with Alien/Khlolks Kernel/.30p Radio. Does anybody else have this problem? It can be really annoying sometimes. Thank you
I dont have this problem with Wireless Tether.
Thanks a lot! I've been using the app you recommended and the speed and stability seem to be far better than the one packaged with the alien rom.
Its one of my favorite apps, and arguably the number one root app to have since it potentialy could save you $20/mo. There is a link in my signature to a list of root apps compatible with the Atrix if you are interested.
What app can you use to trick your phone to allowing you to use cellular data when it normally would want to use wifi.
I dont think this is possible although after a quick good search, I found this:
http://www.ehow.com/how_12175977_make-android-think-its-wifi-3g.html
I have no clue if that actually works but what are you trying to do, anyway?
use google talk without wifi. Download apps from amazong without wifi. There was an app called 3gunrestricter for iOS devices that was very handy.

I am able to download apps without wifi. it warns you that it is a big file, then it asks if you want to use wifi or wireless carrier.
Also to use google talk without wifi, there are MANY different methods. You can use an app called GTalkEnabler if you are rooted. Otherwise, some ROMs already have it enabled. You can do it manually by modifying the databases as well.
Thanks. WOnder why there isn't just an outright app that enables the ability to spoof 3g. Whenever I try to download an Amazon App, it tells me it needs to be on wifi and wont download until I am connected to wifi. I'll look into the gtalkenabler.

in the amazon app, you can change the file size as to when it forces you to use wifi. its in the settings menu.

20MB is it's limit though or else you have to use wifi.
I tether to my other phone.
Last night i had to take my mom to the ER, there was no reception at all where I was so I made an account with the guest wifi in an attempt to use wifi calling. It didn't work.
I'm on a rooted stock rom 4.4, Xposed installer is installed but I disabled everything in an attempt to fix this. So now I turn to u guys to see if you've run into this.
It believes that I am not connected to wifi for some reason.
A lot of organizations that offer free wifi to customers such as hospitals only open up standard Web ports such as http, https, etc. They may not be allowing the udp ports that are required for wifi calling. If you have no issues with it at home that was more than likely the case. If it doesn't work on your home wifi there maybe other issues.

I have the same issues at my work, but it works fine when I'm at home. @krad42 is hitting it right on the nail....
WiFi tethering is a must for me on my phone. Is the V10 compatable with foxfi?
It works. I've been tethering with it but there is a trick to getting it to work which is you are going to need Adguard, at least this appears to be the case.
I have the full Adguard paid service which is a complete blocking of all ads including protecting your phone with a firewall. The reason I think you need Adguard (perhaps a free alternative will work) is because I can't get tethering to work unless I enable it with Adgaurd running. Adguard blocks the tethering from connecting to your PC but blocks the tethering sub notice. So after you start foxfi you just have to pause Adguard and it will connect.
If I try to enable tethering with any app without having Adguard running it will always say I need to subscribe, but if I start tethering while having Adguard running tethering starts and then I just have to pause Adguard and it connects. I'm typing this now on my tethered PC and it's actually been connected for 2 days straight with no drops. Been streaming amazon prime, twitch, and youtube red all in full HD with very little buffering(only have -105db 4g signal strength).
Let me know if this works, or you need more help, I'll do what I can.
Imucarmen. Which adblocker are you using. Don't see an adguard on play. Thanks
Adguard has its own website. Google kicked it off the playstore 2 years ago

sorry for the late response but here's the site https://adguard.com/en/welcome.html
I highly recommend it if you don't want ads. It's the most effective ad blocker I've ever used. Just make sure you enable it because you have to do it manually.
This is exactly how I got foxfi to work for me. I also have disabled many lg and Verizon apps. Read somewhere about dtignite app in particular was good to stop.
I have unlimited data and use paid FoxFi 2.17.2 with no issues whatsoever. It does install a root certificate to bypass Verizon checks.
