Last night i had to take my mom to the ER, there was no reception at all where I was so I made an account with the guest wifi in an attempt to use wifi calling. It didn't work.
I'm on a rooted stock rom 4.4, Xposed installer is installed but I disabled everything in an attempt to fix this. So now I turn to u guys to see if you've run into this.
It believes that I am not connected to wifi for some reason.
A lot of organizations that offer free wifi to customers such as hospitals only open up standard Web ports such as http, https, etc. They may not be allowing the udp ports that are required for wifi calling. If you have no issues with it at home that was more than likely the case. If it doesn't work on your home wifi there maybe other issues.

I have the same issues at my work, but it works fine when I'm at home. @krad42 is hitting it right on the nail....

Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Download the latest. I have found this to be the best app for the job.
Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...

Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/wireless-tether/
The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !
Another option for USB tethering would be PDANet. I use that for tethering my Mac
installed wifi-tether 3 beta2 (latest from google) to my rooted Thunderbolt stock ROM
I start wifi tether, computer connects, but when I open the browser it never loads a page

Title says it all. I can't locate the WiFi Tether app on here. Any help would be appreciated.
I just read Wireless Tether 2.0.7 works on the Rezound. I'm at work so I cannot try it though...search google and you'll find it.
Wireless Tether 2.0.7 did not work for me. Nor did 3.1 Beta 9. The SSID of the Tether is not broadcast, and manually creating a profile connecting to hidden SSID doesn't make a connection either.
In Titanium Backup I see an app called "TetheringGuard 2.3.4", but freezing or uninstalling it makes no difference.

tetheringguard is on my phone and my wifi tether works. yours does too. TetheringGuard only seems to have effect on the verizon wifi hotspot app (if you delete tetheringguard, the hotspot app stops working). Whatever device youre trying to see the SSID with doesnt like ad-hoc connections and thats the only way the app works on the rezound right now. Either that or you tried turning on encryption, in which case, just turn it off and run it open. It does work though, I've used it plenty to tether my fiance's Ipad2.
Anyone try the open garden tethering app in the market?

Ahh, encryption doesn't work... I haven't tried wide-open mode yet. Thanks!
I don't like unencrypted, but when I need 35 megabit LTE connectivity out on the road I guess beggars can't be choosers!

hoping they update it as well. Hate seeing random scrubs on my ACL when I go to places without free wifi. I'll take what I can get for now though!
Hehe, I spent 58 days consulting on-site for a security company, it was hilarious how many people were trying to get into my Incredible's tether every day.
It doesn't work for me just stays on obtaining IP address
I use wifi-tether 3.1 beta 7 with mss clamping and routing fix enabled.
I also just decompiled with 4G hotspot and saw that you have to register with Verizon in order to activate 4G hotspot. There's a ton of checks in there.
Does anyone know any apps that creates a Wifi AP? I am not talking about an Adhoc network that all apps I have used create, I want it to work like native tethering.
I am asking because I am using polish blood preRC, and I really want to use it full time, the only thing is native tethers do not work and all apps create an Adhoc network.
Normally this isn't a problem, however I wish to use my PS3 over my phone's 3G connection, this is where the problem comes in, the PS3 does not see Adhoc networks so most, if not all tether apps will not work.
I have tried to use connectify while I have a usb tether connected however the PS3 cannot connect to the internet, I also would prefer to avoid using my laptop as an AP.
So anyone know a decent Wifi tether app that will create an AP like native tethering, not an Adhoc network
Are you sure that PS3 cannot connect to Ad hoc networks?
Here is an article about it http://www.ehow.com/how_6808376_can-connect-ad-hoc-network_.html
and it says PS3 can connect to Ad hoc networks.
Check if you configured everything properly.
Also Wireless tether app supports AP mode but only on certain handsets (HTC Evo 3D for example). It looks like it doesn't support our device.
Mine has never seen an adhoc network from my phone, guess I'll check it tonight when I can get on it.

Check wifi channels, anything between 1-11 channel will work.

Don't use this ICS. It's still in very early stage of developement. It's only for money.. If you really need a ICS on your Swift, then try AOKP 4.0.3. by DevSwift. Probably an update will come very soon. I was using it on my swift for 1-2 weeks, and I was happy with it. Now I changed the whole phone.

It's wrong to say its for money.....all he does is a dedicated ftp server for donators....and a bit delayed public release.

Back on topic, ps3 definitely will not see an adhoc network, just tried and when I scanned it didn't pick it up, when I entered my ssid manually it said it could not find it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Sorry for the mislead, PS3 doesn't work with ad hoc networks.
But here is a possible solution:
1)Download latest WiFi tether beta http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk
2)Open it and then go to Settings
3)Change Device-Profile to Google NexusOne
4)Change Setup-Method to Netd (master)
5)Start tethering and that's it
Note: I haven't tested this on Mike's CM9 but it did work on CM7, so try it, and tell us if it works.
Just to warn you there is probability to get kernel panics with this settings.
EDIT: I have tested this on Mike's CM9 and can't get it to work. Simply wait till Mike fixes WiFi tethering, or flash CM7 or some other ROM.
You can try a couple of options...
1. Hosted Network Starter
Free: Simple hostpot on your pc with non configurable DHCP
www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_hotspot_starter.html
2. WiFi Tether Router
Paid: Android app for rooted phones with full featured DHCP, VPN, etc

Im using stang5litre Edition 5.0 v3 on OF1 I cant rememeber if im on the newest version or not, i feel like i might be on V2. My issue ive been having not only on this rom but the last one i use too(hyperdrive) is with random pages not working when using USB tether AND Wifi Hotspot. Some sites just return a DNS issue. Its really weird. For instance right now i can watch live streams on my DirecTv app on my phone, but my nvidia shield thats on the same network cant, ive also tried this with the wifi hotspot and had the same issue, but it comes and goes. Ill also have google issues alot. Like my phone providing the internet can use google just fine but if i hop on the laptop its hit or miss if i can use google, google.com just returns a dns issues 90% of the time. I dont know if anyone has an idea but im open to suggestions. Right now i have my phone plugged into my Asus RT-AC5300 routers usb port and have to set to android phone for primary wan, works awesome for 99% of tihngs, i just keep having random DNS issues. Im on verizon and have unlimited data
Hey I just reverted back to stock from Cherish OS, kept having way too many issues with the ROM rebooting or just freezing. I managed to get hotspot working on Cherish by editing the build prop to include:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
then pushing adb shell: settings put global tether_dun_required 0
Was working fine minus the crashes.
Now going back to stock I havnt had any unexpected crashes but I cannot seem to get the tethering to work anymore using magiskhide prop config. Does anyone know what else needs to be done to get wifi tethering working again? It looks like the DUN APN setting on my custom APN does not stick around after saving it, I dont know if it was enabled on Cherish OS somehow or what the difference between the two set ups would realistically be.
Edit:
Solution Provided by lentm:
"If you're rooted, try using VPN Hotspot: https://github.com/Mygod/VPNHotspot/releases"
Just enabled wlan0.
Still looking for a solution, If someone can point me to where I might need to start to resolve this I would appreciate it.
Ex; does it need a custom keneral? or Radio?
What is the limiting factor, that doesnt allow the connected device to get internet?
If you're rooted, try using VPN Hotspot: https://github.com/Mygod/VPNHotspot/releases
I can confirm the linked app works and replicates the built in Wifi Hotspot feature. I have it running on a T Mobile, bootloader unlocked, rooted, stock firmware, and on Android 11. Worked with my desktop, other phone, and Smart TV. I do not have it as a part of my plan. No VPN, port, or other nonsense to setup on the client to get it working. Just put in the WiFi spot password and off you go!.
Thanks for the link! I was never able to find a way to get the built in one working with out an app of some kind. I have no idea what would be needed to patch the factory hotspot to get it working without an app.

Great. BTW, I think the reason why it's recommended to use with the VPN (such as AdGuard) is to hide the tether usage.
I was a bit skeptical, but after I enabled the wlan0 toggle it worked! thank you soo much I have been struggling with this for a while.

Something to note here I wasn't using Adguard and had no issues with the hotspot vpn app. I wasn't using the "Temporary Hotspot" toggle in the app either. Using the wlan0 option gave me Internet on any device I tried while on T Mobile service / Towers. I went out of town and I'm now roaming on US Cellular indicated on my notification bar. This hotspot method stopped working for me. I could connect to the hotspot but no internet. After some research I found using Adguard does resolves this as you mentioned. In the VPN hotspot app you must choose "tun0" as the upstream interface.
