Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Download the latest. I have found this to be the best app for the job.
Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...
droid-life.com/2011/05/31/verizon-begins-blocking-wireless-tether-asks-that-you-purchase-a-plan/
Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/wireless-tether/
The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !
Another option for USB tethering would be PDANet. I use that for tethering my Mac

+1 Never fails me, Froyo & GB
+1 Never fails me, GB
This has been one problem that's plagued me with both the Evo 4G and now the 3D. Barnacle works but makes the internet painfully slow(er) and Wireless Tether for Root works on 4G but not 3G. Well, I finally figured it out. I'm not going to go into the details because I'm not quite sure I understand exactly what it's doing yet, but it comes down to Sprint's MTU and the tether apps expecting it to be something other than it is. All that is needed to fix it is to double the MTU from 1472 to 2944, and for whatever reason Wifi Tether will start acting right again. One side effect of this is that your ping will go up by about 20-40% but it may also help increase your download speeds ever so slightly too.
First you'll want to download the latest wifi tether from either the market or their site here.
Once you have that installed you'll want to open up an adb shell and, as root, type: setprop persist.data_netmgrd_mtu 2944
After that is set, toggle airplane mode on and off so that it uses the new value.
Next open Wifi Tether and go to Menu -> Settings -> enable Routing Fix
And that's it, wifi tether should work at full speed and the settings will stick with you after reboots. The value is originally set from the build.prop but as long as you don't wipe your data partition it should last.

xHausx, I followed your directions and now wireless tether works on both 3G and 4G. However, I now have a wakelock issue. I uninstalled wireless tether and the wakelock issue is gone. Reinstall wireless tether, do your method, and then wakelock issue is back.
Phone has only stock applications plus wireless tether. Using stock ROM and kernel. Any ideas?

This did work for me, but... I'm not sure you've found all the issues just yet. I ran about a dozen speed tests from speedtest.net and WiFi Tether seems very inconsistent and slow. Barnacle on the other hand is fast and smooth. I'm in a fringe area and Barnacle gives me 400k to 500k speed that is quite consistent. WiFi Tether on the other hand, while it does now work with this workaround, is about 100k up and down and it is very inconsistent and it stalls a lot. I'll stick with Barnacle for now because it seems to work well with no issues.

This is great find. But are you running AdHoc or AD.
After this workaround I still can't get Wifi Tether to work. It connects gets IP address slowy on client and then just sits there. Data won't transfer.
The Sprint Hot Spot works fine on 3G, but I didn't test it for speed.

If so are you running Ad-Hoc or AD?
Does it work on both 3G and 4G?
Here is a flashable zip made by JoelZ9614. It unlocks the stock hotspot (shows up as a router, not ad-hoc) and unlocks 3D sense homescreen. Works on 3G and (reportedly) 4G.

I believe Barnacle probably sets it to the usual default of 1500. If you set it to that wifi tether will work but it is painfully slow(er). I just doubled the E3D's default and hoped it would be the right size when the packets got fragmented(split into smaller chuncks). If someone has the time to play around with it some youthey could probably find a better MTU that would allow for even better speeds.

For sure, it is originally set in the build.prop and once set the value is, IIRC, saved under /data/system.

I think Barnacle changes this setting to 1500 by default, which works but is an extremely inefficient setting to use on Sprint's 3G. Hence why it is so slow.

It's still using the stock MTU then. I'm pretty sure what's happening is the data's being lost in a PMTUD black hole. It'll work when transferring small amounts of data but when you start using more bandwidth it gets flooded with error messages and starts ignoring you.
Check to see if it's changing it by replacing setprop with getprop, if it did set correctly try rebooting your phone or turning airplane mode on and off.
Encryption?
I've got the 3.1 beta2 installed and did this tweak. Wifi tether works fine for me with encryption disabled. But with it enabled, I can't get internet access. I'm sure I'm using the right passphrase and my laptop connects to tether. But I can't get data. Barnacle tether works fine for me with wep enabled. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Credit goes to colestein on androidcentral for this. Figured id post it here since i haven't seen it anywhere here on XDA.
I'm using WiFi Tether 3.1 beta 6
Download the Data Enabler widget from the Market
Setup Wifi Tether as Nexus One, netd, mms clamping enabled
Use Data Enabler to shut off 3g
Start tethering
once tethering is started, enable 4g
You should have a consistent 4G signal and the benefits of infrastructure mode!
Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? Im completely functional except my phone reboots once every 2 hrs or so...
I have 3 questions about wireless tether. Currently have it set up in infrastructure mode, and it is working great. I have wake lock on, not disabled because if the screen went to sleep, the connection would drop.
Wifi Tether profile is set up as Nexus One, netd enabled.
Here are my 3 questions.
1. When I enable wifi tether, the sprint tether icon appears in the taskbar. The software works, and I tether fine, but am I now registering tethering with the sprint network?
2. I do not have mms clamping enabled, What does it do, and should I have it enabled?
3. What does the enable routing fix option do?
This is working for me as well
Thanks!!
Sounds good, I look forward to testing this once I receive my Photon.
We have a similar fix like this for the Epic4G in that forum, but it's much more complicated and involves editing the framework.jar of the ROM.
Since 99% of tethering apps are filtered on the market for our phones, thanks to Sprint, a post to the file or an attachment of it would probably benefit the users of it in a greater capacity.
By the way folks, even though he isn't the creator of this workaround, the OP usually deserves a little thanks...
Worked for me in 3g. Very fast. I also get the tethering or mobile hotspot active (sprint mobile hotspot) but I just ignore it.
BTW, how is battery for most while plugged into the computer usb for charging while tethering. Mine can't keep up with the drain from the phone.

Currently the built in WiFi tether when hacked with sqlite editor will only work in USB tether mode. Wifi tether isnt 100% Alot of sites just fail to load for what ever reason. Maybe this has changed now, but when I changed the entitlement check on mine alot of site just would never load over wifi, but worked great over usb.

I did actually use the built in WiFi tether as well as the wifi tether apk and both of them showed the same issues with not loading certain pages correctly. However I never fixed the permissions since it was never mentioned to try that. Once I get my new razr on friday i'll give it a try.
I think though that its something with how the data gets routed from the 3/4G chip to the wifi chip. When any of you have been wifi tethering with either application, have you been on 3G or 4G data? perhaps this is the issue? I've been in a 4G area trying to wifi tether and having it fail, but I have never tried on 3G...
Also I wonder if after the OTA update that the results will be different? can anyone confirm this yet?
Is anyone else getting the message "tethering or mobile hotspot active" in the notification bar when using the wifi tether apk? My X never displayed this notification when using wifi tether.
I just tried the Barnacle Tether app. THe phone is brand new, so I don't have any billing info. however, I did get the "tethering" notification. Is there a setting that hides my profile first?
We will see.

I am seeing exactly the same issue. Numerous errors on starting, unable to tether. Or more precisely, other devices can see the hotspot and tether to it, but do not get Internet access.
My main problem is that my phone will show up as a device instead of a router (like it used to on my OG Incredible), thus not allowing other phones or tablets to connect to it because they don't see the connection. Laptops work find though. I use "wireless tether for root users" with the green signal symbol and not the newer version because the new one doesn't show the data speeds and total data used in the app.
I am using the latest yellow version and both my Galaxy Note and Lenovo laptop tether to it but do not get Internet access.
sorry for jumping on old post.
Just wondering. On my moto droidbrazr maxxbi did an sqlight hack to bypass the entitlement check and was able to use the stock hotspot app even though i was on unlimited data. Would a similar work around work for dna?

Solution WiFi Tether_HTC DNA
Just enabled my WiFi Tether I am using WiFi Tether 3.2-beta2 with ROM Super Stock v1.0106.605.4 http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565190
Searched YouTube and found..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF77Pk-nZng Followed his steps and I'll be it worked!
LOL for anyone still using the DNA, I just installed NuSense Six and FoxFi works perfectly - not ad-hoc, full infrastructure mode, so it will work with devices other than PCs.

I'm using all stock roms (I was s-off and flashed stock recovery, grabbed OTAs, flashed TWRP recovery). I installed SuperSU & BusyBox than was able to tether using Barnacle Wifi Tether~ it gave me an error for adhoc but I was able to click associate and use my 4g on an iPad.(Also checked external IPs & ran speedtests to confirm it was using 4G)
Not working for me. It gets stuck at "please wait while starting". And just spins. I can back out of it but nothing good happens.
