I was in the same situation.. since they took away my hotspot, I used it as the chance to put a custom on it. I ended up going with bamf 3.0. Liking it so far... CM7 was my other choice.

I haven't found a straight answer yet, so I am posting here. I am currently stock but I would like to root some time in the near future. I would also like to try the update before rooting. However, I am concerned that if I apply the update that the root method in the development forums may no longer be valid. Is it possible that Verizon could lock down the phone with this OTA update such that I will not be able to root after it is applied?
Thanks,
Josh
The ota is the exact same as what was leak about 2 weeks ago. JCase compared both and made that determination. I believe he also made a root unsigned copy for down load. Most devs have already incorporated this update into their roms. The only thing is the new radio will need flashed. Check out the development section and look for the roms posted by jcase. It is best not to run the ota/leaked on the older radio as they compliment each other. Any other questiins pm.

I thought this update included the new radios?
U would have to flash the entire ruu, and that will give u everything. Most rooted flash the rom through recovery the flash radio through hboot. Jcase has a nice op in the development section.

So if I update my stock phone via the ota update, I can still root afterwards if I decide no problem?
It appears that yes you should be able to root the ota via JCase's root tutorial.

If u decide to flash a custom rom, the update is in most of them, u would just have to flash the radio separate.

Hey Guys,
I rooted my Thunderbolt but I really don't like it anymore. I'm really new to this and just want to go back to the factory settings. I can't get the OTA update doing it manually and its pissing me off.... can anyone help me?

If you're rooted, you could have gotten the OTA update weeks ago. But if you are determined to return to stock for whatever reason, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423.
A lot of roms already have the OTA's long before they are released, i use those and dont even bother with OTA's anymore. I would really consider staying with root. theres so much more you can do i dont see why anyone wouldnt want it. but if you are determined to then the link mentioned above works fine.
What radio should I flash via hboot on Das BAMF v1.6.3? There are 4 combos to choose from.
Which radio combo is included in the OTA that just went out a few days ago? Is that the one I should choose for Das BAMF v1.6.3?
Noob here
Let me explain my situation.
I want to root my TB, but I have the newest OTA (2.11.605.9)
I was going to downgrade to 2.11.605.5 to use the revolutionary tool.
Then I saw a couple post saying that overnight the device would auto-update and cancel the root, so some people would keep the phone in airplane mode but I saw a post saying that you could download a custom rom to stop the auto-update process. What is that rom called? Can you explain exactly how to get?
I don't know that much about all this stuff.
A few other things:
I have not downgraded my software yet, nor have I rooted the TB.
I'm just waiting to see if their is indeed a Rom that could stop the auto-updating, so I don't root my TB for no reason.
Sorry if this question was posted already, but I just really want to know.
I believe almost any newer rom will stop it. I highly recommend taking the plunge. Im on ikream now, its great, but homestly, coming from the dinc, all these roms on the tbolt fly. Airborne is one seriously sweet rom also.

Any rom will do
Ok so i have been out of the ROM loop for a bit, so i figured i would ask questions before trying to do so. I am wanting to run the newest ROMs running the leaked ICS VM base, but everywhere i see, it says to upgrade your firmware? I've looked all over the place and have yet to see the upgradeable firmware i need to do so! Can anyone please clarify this for me or at least point me in the right direction.
You don't need to upgrade anything. I'm on the original firmware and the only thing that was working, but has since stopped was the camera. I also haven't updated the rom since it was released, so that could be the problem. I did run into a problem when I first installed it. Using rm -rf instead of formatting the partitions did not work. It kept boot looping, but changing it back to format worked.

well see my issue now is that i flashed it just fine like i would any other ROM (no FW upgrade) but it sits on the splash screen. this now happens with ALL ICS ROMs. at first they randomly rebooted but now the only ones that work on it are older ROMS (GB, FROYO) but ICS will not boot. i guess i might have to wait until the offical release hits for us

DO NOT FLASH THE VIRGIN MOBILE FIRMWARE / VIRUS!!!!!!!!
As for the bootlooping, if you are hboot 1.5 s-on, then ICS does that unless you use Chad's kernel (which breaks USB and 3d camera). I recommend you get s-off by downgrading to hboot 1.4 or use the wire trick. See my signature or the stickes in the cdma development forum (assuming you are CDMA) for more information.

Calm down bud. There is no virus but he is correct. Do not update if you have hboot 1.5 if you are s off then fire ahead using the update package from freeza. Then use the mod to convert it to sprint. After that go be flash happy.

I'm not the one who called it a virus - many of the devs who worked tirelessly trying to rid our phones of that firmware coined that one. From what I've read throughout the forums, I would highly recommend against flashing that, even using the mod to convert it to Sprint. Every ICS ROM I have tried (CDMA) has ran fine using Freeza's all in one version 2.17.
deadlocked007 said:
Well if he gets s offed then he can choose himself haha. I prefer to use the vm firmware. Seems perfect for me. But yet again I've been here from the beginning. Got s off the first day revolutionary was released to public and all that.

Could be only s-on people had issues removing it, but I personally would not risk it. The ics roms all work fine without it if you are s-off. Deadlocked I am genuinely asking (seriously not trying to be argumentative): what benefit you see from using it since afaik, there is none.

Hi,
I would like to install a non rooted version of ICS on my Thunderbolt.
This Thunderbolt is only being used for development, so I don't pay verizon on it, meaning the OTA doesn't work.
Would anyone know where I could find the PG05IMG.zip of the whole ICS update ?
Thank you

You would have to ask HTC, Verizon, (or Football? maybe) if you can find him for an RUU.
There was never one distributed that I have seen.
I compiled it together with 2.11.605.19 just as they would have on the device itself with the OTApkg.zip which contains many patch files.
There is no RUU that I have found yet, if I see one I will PM you a link for sure.
Closest you can get, is I can make a non rooted rom, but you would still need to be able to flash it.....so I don't know.

Oh then nevermind thanks, I'll just get the rooted one.
I'm looking for this too, as my bolt seems dead. I was on twisted's multi 1/13 but got frequent boot loops stopping at boot splash... So I tried to go back to stock but it still loops the same way. I was hoping the new OTA might do the trick.

Hey guys,
I'm not a developer and I've moved on from my Thunderbolt to a Note II meaning it has no more Verizon service. Do you think they'll be coming out with whatever file I need to get ICS on my phone without rooting? If there is no option, I can go the rooting route, but I would like to keep everything stock and this as a playtoy if possible.

The update didnt come in the form of an ruu. They made it a damn ball of patches that have to be applied to the stock .19 ROM. The ROM also cant have any system apps removed to make it work.

I am running a custom rom at the moment and I dont believe I ever updated the stock firmware. I have been looking everywhere to see what exactly is the benefits of the new firmwares, but I cant find anything about them. Can anyone explain to me if its worth going back to stock......getting the OTA upto 4.3 and then having to go through the whole rooting process again and putting a custom rom on? Thanks much!
It's easier to just s-off and then update the firmware so you don't need to wipe your device

So I went to the post with radios and firmware..........do I want the 4.3 one that came with RUU or the one that came in the OTA? Thanks much After I just have to figure out how to S-off........hope its not as big a pain in the butt as the HTC Evo was
Well nevermind about that...........I cant take S-off..........Im on Dirty Unicorn 4.3 and when I try to use revone and set up for S off (the part where after you do it you have to reboot) it just automatically reboots my phone everytime
