Will the OTA Update be unrootable? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't found a straight answer yet, so I am posting here. I am currently stock but I would like to root some time in the near future. I would also like to try the update before rooting. However, I am concerned that if I apply the update that the root method in the development forums may no longer be valid. Is it possible that Verizon could lock down the phone with this OTA update such that I will not be able to root after it is applied?
Thanks,
Josh

The ota is the exact same as what was leak about 2 weeks ago. JCase compared both and made that determination. I believe he also made a root unsigned copy for down load. Most devs have already incorporated this update into their roms. The only thing is the new radio will need flashed. Check out the development section and look for the roms posted by jcase. It is best not to run the ota/leaked on the older radio as they compliment each other. Any other questiins pm.

I thought this update included the new radios?

U would have to flash the entire ruu, and that will give u everything. Most rooted flash the rom through recovery the flash radio through hboot. Jcase has a nice op in the development section.

So if I update my stock phone via the ota update, I can still root afterwards if I decide no problem?

It appears that yes you should be able to root the ota via JCase's root tutorial.

If u decide to flash a custom rom, the update is in most of them, u would just have to flash the radio separate.

Hey Guys,
I rooted my Thunderbolt but I really don't like it anymore. I'm really new to this and just want to go back to the factory settings. I can't get the OTA update doing it manually and its pissing me off.... can anyone help me?

If you're rooted, you could have gotten the OTA update weeks ago. But if you are determined to return to stock for whatever reason, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423.

A lot of roms already have the OTA's long before they are released, i use those and dont even bother with OTA's anymore. I would really consider staying with root. theres so much more you can do i dont see why anyone wouldnt want it. but if you are determined to then the link mentioned above works fine.

What radio should I flash via hboot on Das BAMF v1.6.3? There are 4 combos to choose from.
Which radio combo is included in the OTA that just went out a few days ago? Is that the one I should choose for Das BAMF v1.6.3?

Wrong!
You can take the update, it will unroot you, AND if the new update includes a new HBOOT it will flash over and give you a security warning and/or S-ON.
your best bet is to wait a few hours and someone will make a rooted version of the new ota... but chances are we will have the ota update weeks before it is ever pushed to any non rooted phones... at the moment .6 is stock.. and all the roms are .9 so all I"m waiting on is a new radio update to hopefully fix this wacky 3g signal I get

If it detects you are a lower version then the OTA it will still attempt to upgrade.
Ok. From what I understand, the OTA won't automatically install if I am rooted. Which is good. But if I wanted to I could force the OTA to install?
But from what some people in this thread say, it's not worth it, and I could just get a unrooted version of the OTA from here at some point?
Is that all correct?
I am only interested because I heard there was a big OTA coming on the 16th, and I expect that it will fix a bunch of random stuff on the TB. So I'd like to get it.
I'm pretty sure you need to have stock recovery installed to install the OTA. If using CWM it will not install.
Wow this is interesting...i flashed a new radio yesterday is this the new ota update.
jcase said he thinks the leaked ruu is supposed to be the first OTA.

OTA update ?

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to the rooting scene yet and I heard Verizon pushed an update out that fixes a lot of things with the tb. If I apply this update from the settings menu will it unrooot and turn s-on back on? I have not updated my device since I got it, about 2 months ago. I am running bamf Rom , at least I think that's the name of it . version 1.6 .3 something like that. so, what do I have to do to get my radio updated and everything else updated without losing my root or s off ? I see a bunch of topics that have to do with RUU BUT I don't understand what that means
Sent from my AR6400L using Tapatalk
I don't think you will be able to if your running bamf. You need to flash the new radio in the bootloader, then any Rom based off the new ruu to apply the fixes and keep s-off. Check to op of your rom

Read the first post in the BAMF thread. If you are running v1.6.3 and you installed it correctly, you already have the update, it's based on the leaked copy of the Verizon update that's out now.

This is exactly correct... AND NEVER ACCEPT AN OTA WHILE ROOTED! IT COULD CAUSE THERMO-NUCLEAR WAR...LOL. No really though, people who are trying to install the ota even with the stock ROM are getting stuck in a boot loop.
Just to reiterate op, if you are rooted you have no reason to install any ota ever! The developers incorporate it into their roms long before an ota starts. And...as long as you are rooted with s-off never install an ota! You quite frankly never know what will happen...
Hope this helps...

im pretty sure das bamf 1.6.3 already has the latest ota update included. its based of the 1.13.605.7 ruu, which is the one included in the ota. so if your on that rom theres no need to apply the update, you already have it. i personally never accept ota's since most of the time you can find a rom that will include it way before the actual ota is released. and usually with way better features included

Ota on stock htc rooted phone

So what is the consensus for taking the latest ota with a stock rom and htc unlocked and rooted? I'm not ready to install a custom rom yet but do want the security fix but I haven't seen much talk as to people in my situation. Thanks in advance.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
The update patches all known root exploits, meaning you probably won't lose root but will lose the ability to re-root should something happen. My advice, just wait til you're ready to flash a custom ROM which will likely already have the update cooked into it without any possible negative side effects.
I would wait until people confirm if it takes away root, etc... In general with a rooted phone OTA updates are a NO. Wait until someone posts a rooted version in here.
Oh and one more thing... don't ever post in the development section, Q&A section is your friend.
Once u root do not ever take any ota updates. It's been stated multiple times. If u want the update just wait and there are 100% stock roms with updates usually within a day or two of the ota update. Either u want to move foward with ur rooted device and flash roms, even if it is stock, or stick with what u got. If u can root ur own phone flashing roms isn't anything to worry about.

As far as I know you wont be able to install OTA on rooted device.
Ok. I wasn't sure if anyone was working on a stock rom but ill wait. Is there any roms you guys recommend that are stock looking but worth running? Also I will use the q & a forum next time. I thought since this dealt with root and roms this would be the place. Sorry.

I don't this that's true at all. I've read a few posts saying people still have root after applying the update to a stock rooted rom. They just had to change permissions in the superuser directory and everything worked after that.

No no, I'm not saying you will lose root by updating, I'm saying I read somewhere that it patches up the exploits that revolutionary uses to get s-off. In other words, if you have hboot 1.3 or 1.4 then you probably won't be able to get s-off. I don't remember who posted that but it was a respectable dev.

The update doesn't contain an HBOOT. It has a new recovery, removes and patches/updates some things in /system, and has an updated boot.img. I suppose it does check to see if you are on the latest ROM (2.08.651.2, which is the one that patches AlphaRev's s-off method) before it will install though. By itself, the update will either fail to install (probably if you don't have HBOOT 1.5 or a custom ROM) or it will install and you'll be just fine using root once you change permissions on the su directory.

Rooted: official update consequences

So, what happens to a rooted phone when the official update to ics comes out? Will you be able to update through Verizon, or will a dev need to work on it first? I know there are some great ics roms out there already, but what if you wanted to try the stock update? My wife also has a rezound and she won't let me "mess" with hers.
Thanks!

use ruu and go back to stock for the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466474
go here and do #1~3
for #3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...5&postcount=58
go here and download and use this file
this one is the lastest stock ruu.
One of two options:
1. If you are already rooted, wait for a Dev to build a ROM based on the OTA so you can safely flash it.
2. You can unroot/relock your phone to accept the OTA update.
The problem with # 2 is the current methods to achieve root may not work on the updated software so it is possible to be stuck without root for awhile (unless someone finds a work-around).
The way I understand it is simple. You will be able to upgrade to a rooted is rom, however you will not be able to update the radios if you are s-on. I'm Gonna hold out. There will be an unlock tool after ics drops...whether same day or eventually.
A rooted version of the OTA rom will be released within a couple hours of the OTA.

You never accept an update If you are rooted or ever plan to root.
You cannot gain s-off with the newest update, but can still do HTC dev

Thankfully, with HTC Dev, we'll pretty much always have the option of rooting regardless of update.
Yes, but I believe with the new hboot 1.15 there's no more flashing kernals, radios, or splash screens........ouch

the only thing u cant do if u took the update is u cant get s-off at this time.. u can still use all the other root tools... :good:

Radios and splash screens.. oh well. Not a big deal.
And kernels.. well, my views on kernels aren't popular so I will keep them to myself.
I really dont care to have S-OFF. I just want root access for tethering. I had the Old Evo 4G and I spent hours and days flashing roms and it was addictive! I just dont want to teak this LTE. To me ICS is working fine and I dont want to be hooked again of flashing, Nand backups and such.
I just want a safe way to re gain root, for Tethering. again I dont care about Bootloader or S-OFF.
Any input will be appreciated.
I made a topic on why you root and it got closed.. same reasoning I'm hearing about is why I wanted people to fully be aware this isn't the evo og and rooting could be bad this time

Question guys, you can use HTC Dev for the Evo but you won't get S-OFF, what does that mean.
Can I still flash Radios, Modems, and can I tweak with msl reader like the old EVO.
Also has anyone found a root method post Google Wallet Update from July 11th. I decided to update because I was not rooted yet, but now I want to root.
Aw man, I'm a new member at xda, just got on the forums when I got my EVO LTE. I've been trying to lurk and read up but unfortunately never came across somebody saying I shouldn't accept OTAs... I was gonna wait until cm9 or aokp got a bit more stable to root and flash. What have I lost the ability to do by accepting this update?
Edit: nevermind, looks like I'll have to wait until root methods are updated, and possibly wait for another s-off exploit if if comes. Can't flash radios or kernels... Damn...

I'd imagine that it won't be long before someone comes out with an updated root method. Be patient, read and ask questions in the meantime.
If you are S-ON and rooted then you update with the new OTA can you still root the phone again?
I was rooted only and accepted the update. No longer have root access. I saved w voodoo root keeper, but it couldn't restore root after update. Figured that would happen just wanted to try it.
Also after the update, my clock speed only throttles down to 1ghz. Anyone else noticing this? Talk about a battery killer!

Edit: Scratch that 1ghz thing. Think maybe my widget was freaking out. Seems to be fine now. I was pissed at first too!
First rule of XDA is you don't accept OTA updates for any reason.
Just my 2 cents...I made the mistake with my OG EVO and had to wait for unrEVOked to be updated.

Is it possible to use someone else backup 1.31 the previous build when being rooted. I want revert back to the previous build. I'm on the latest update. The reason why i ask this is I want to go back to stock using Ruu.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Here man....it's a super quick process. Just copied and pasted from another thread....
I took the OTA and I'm rooted again.... It's not even that difficult.
I wanted google wallet and I wanted it bad! So I ran thru the hastle of hacking Google wallet so I could get into settings and clear it. Then HTC re-locked my phone. Ran the RUU, then accepted the OTA.
After you've updated...
Run the HTC unlock. Instructions at HTCdev website.
Then flash TWRP (I used adb fastboot method):
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
Once that's installed you can flash supersu via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1538053
Find: CWM installable ZIP in the OPs sig block (it works fine with TWRP on 1.22 software)
From there I just installed busybox (by Stepen) via the market. Grabbed Titanium Backup, and here I am. Rooted phone with 1.22 stock ROM.
Not all of the old mods work anymore though. My favorite, which was the battery mods, don't work. They don't even come close to working, so make sure you nandroid backup before you start tinkering..
I'm rooted but my phone is acting weird after using the HTC unlock method with the latest update
