Hotspot is working with newest tether beta (5). This needs to be moved to General.

barnacle wifi works

Hot Spot Capability After Root
The only wifi tether app that works after root is wifi_tether_v3_1-beta5.apk. I can't remember where I found it but it's out there.

It doesn't work when you want to tether it to a Touchpad. The touchpad cannot detect the wifi connection coming from the phone.

apparently neither does ps3... which idk why it won't work with my photon when it was working with no additional apps or changed settings on my rooted evo 4g... but life goes on and we deal with stuff that just doesn't work... =\

Because the evo actually used infrastructure network with wireless tether

Has to be implemented for the Photon. If you get mad and want to sell your Touchpad to me for $99 just let me know.

Rooted with One-click AIO MoPho root from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217416
Then downloaded latest (beta6) WiFi Tether from here:
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk
Changed the SSID but left everything else off (encryption, etc) to help with the speed. The work laptop anyway connects over VPN. Set up WiFi connection manually in work laptop (XP) as ad-hoc.
Worked like a champ! It's slow as hell ... but a champ! Let's hope it works a little better when on the road. I just need to show that I'm logged on (Sametime).

Yes it does you have to set your device as a samsung gal s and set the type to net d... you will get like 5-10 error after all the errors are gone it works perfect with the hp touchpad

How do you set the Type to Net D. I get everything else but that. Thanks

Also if you are using an Android Tablet you can tether via Bluetooth rather easily.

For those who have gotten this to work with the TouchPad , what channel are you using? Thx

After you set the profile to Samsung Galaxy S, get back to the options menu and select "Change Setup-Method" (next one down) and then select "Netd (master)" and that should be it. Hope this works out for you.

Try Barnacle from the market. The first time you run it, it'll complain about something and you have to click "do it now". After that, it'll work fine from that point forward.

Actually wifi tether program works but some caveats..
So, I tested SpeedTest.net's app on m phone and got about 5600-6000kbps, however, when I tested the same app on the Asus Transformer, it's only getting 300-400kbps.
What kind of speeds are you guys getting?

Tether your Touchpad

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....
@Salvation27/: u csn try this app Clockworkmode tether

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

Free Wifi Teathering FoxFi

I normally don't report on apps, but this one I have to because it is awesome.
In addition to my new Photon I also have a Sony S tablet and been looking at WiFi tethering, but disappointed at the cost from Sprint.
In doing my research I found this app that allows free WiFi Tethering.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en
I immediately downloaded the app and it works easily and perfectly.
"This app is incompatible with all of your devices."
Gonna give this a try, thanks

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I'm using it right now! My tablets were fine using bluetooth connection but when on the road having to use the usb tether (easytether) for my laptop was such a nuisance.
I tried a another workaround discussed on youtube and it worked for the initial connection but would not connect again, registration blocked. I've had foxfi going for about two hours now, turned it off and on six times and its perfect!
Thanks again!!
Is anyone getting this to work with 4g? Whenever I turn on Foxfi, 4g disconnects and switches over to 3g.

WiFi tethering issue

After I installed the new ICS leak I can't get internet on my laptop using my phone to tether either with wireless or when hooked up with USB.
I'm getting a 503 error in google chrome.

Was able to tether prior to ICS but not now.
Any suggestions?

Thing is, I don't use T-Mo I use Simple Mobile. Uses T-Mo network but not T-Mo so I should be able to tether unlike the other thread who said its a T-Mo thethering issue.

I know what Simple Mobile is. It's an ICS issue if you are trying to use "Wireless Tether For Root Users" or any other tether app that is not native.
Trying to tether both wired and wireless and no joy
I'm using the installed tether nothing from the store.
Any workarounds that you know of Hasoon?

Foxfi is good enough for systems where adhoc networks don't matter. The only way I have been succussful with tethering on the touch pad is with root and Wifi Tether app. Just Google it and side load it as it is not in the market. I hope that helps.
instead of using androids built in wifi settings to connect, I use "wifi analyzer". its free in google play, and allows you to see and do things that you can't using stock wifi connection settings. You can set different channels for a 5ghz as well as b/g/n 2.4ghz, as well as reconnect options etc etc. it's a nice way to see which channels are best to connect with.
Thanks,I will give that a try

just because a device is rooted does not mean it will automatically see an ad-hoc connection from another android device. ad-hoc/peer to peer connections from droid to droid are tricky and flakey alot of times or just wont work at all depending on the kernel. everyone usually thinks that tethering and hotspot are the same thing. they are not. there is a big difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure connections.
FWIW, I have zero issues tethering my TP using the stock tethering feature of my Galaxy Nexus.
