I searched the Internet and could not find an explanation, but please feel free to point me in the right direction. Sometimes my Ookla speed test result indicates that LTE was used, but other times it says Ehrpd. Is there a difference between the two? For what it is worth, the speed test results using Ehrpd seem to be better than those on LTE. This may be explained by my use of the latest leaked radio though. Anyway, I appreciate your replies and hope you have a great day!
FWIW - I did find a site that indicated Ehrpd is used as a bridging technology that carriers use to transition to LTE. Ehrpd seems to manage hand-offs if my limited understanding is correct. My question should basically state, does Ehrpd indicate that I am not using a true 4G LTE data connection?
Thanks,

Erhrpd is a software solution that allows vzw to use exsisting cdma towers to pass over packets over to the lte network, the best way to explain it is that it is a bridge between cdma and lte. If ehrpd didn't exsist Verizon would have to either build new pure lte towers or add a ton of equipment to the exsisting towers to make them lte ready, this reduces some of that burden. Ehrpd is a critical technology that is allowing vzw to build out the lte infastructure as quickly and cost efficiently as possible.
So to answer your question It's not fake lte, when your running the speed test and you see ehrpd it is because the packets being sent by the app are broadcasting over lte to the tower and then being switched over to the exsisting cdma hardware which then can be processed in the back end by vzws network.

This is a great explanation, but why do we get the option to select either LTE or ehrpd? And does each do?

Ok, this has nothing to do with VOLTE. VOLTE simply stands for voice over long term evolution, and isn't a network technology. All it really means is that you are using data to make a voice call. This uses a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) service such as Skype.
So, basically, anytime you make a skype voice call over LTE you are using VOLTE. No difference in network. Nothing special.
Hope this cleared up any confusion
To be clear, the specification of true 4G LTE indicates voice service, which means Verizon's implementation of LTE isn't true 4G. When voice it implemented, they will have achieved true 4G. And the most important facet of achieving that is the elimination of CDMA radios in the phones. They are brutally power hungry, however, much longer range than Verizon's current deployment of LTE. I expect the deployment of VOLTE to also come with a robust improvement of the back side to support the load.

I'm still so confused. What is what? And yes I've Google's and read Wikipedia but still hasn't awnsered me. Which one is the one is backhauled and they call 4g? (Not lte) like I know umts is 3g but then what is the other two? I know one of them is the backhauled 3g but then what is the other lol.

HSPA+ is what AT&T called '4G'. HSDPA (for faster download) and HSUPA (for faster upload) are all part of old 3G technologies. UMTS is even older. Technically HSPA+ is 3G as well.
The entire HSPA protocol stack is a giant evolving standard with many different revisions (called release). UNTS is first release. HSUPA is release 6. HSDPA is before that. Current AT&T 4G HSPA+ is at release 10. T-Mobile is release 10 or higher. Both companies call this 4G.
The first step required to upgrade WCDMA to HSPA is to improve the downlink by introducing HSDPA. The upgrade to HSDPA is often just a software update for most WCDMA networks, and as of May 2008 90 percent of WCDMA networks have been upgraded to HSDPA.
In other words...it's exactly what the person above me said...
That's odd, I read Wikipedia and it answered it for me.
Yea I know what they call 3g and 4g lol. Its just that my area last week just got 3g. And it says hspa under status. And even the att website here says its not the backhaulrd what they call 4g. And I was told hy 611 they we wouldnt gget backhauled speeds. But I have hspa. Download speeds always around 2mb down. Can't really test it cause when I'm in a known 4g area its still the same

You have couple of issues there. First of all the status page on GS2 is known to be broken. It randomly flips through UMTS, HSPA and HSDPA etc. It is in no way reflect the actual protocol being used. Second of all, in most areas, 3G and 4G have no speed difference since they all over congested. You will only see signigicant difference in areas that are not densely populated. The signal icon of H+ is also not to be trusted. AT&T is known to stick to one icon for all protocols so that you can't easily find out which area is upgrade 4G and which is not.
Try dial *#0011# and see what the Samsung's diagnose screen says.

Love 4G LTE speeds but just hate to see your battery drop like a rock? I'm sure i do
Well i have a theoretical solution to this:
Im going to be talking about different data modes so it would be best to read this:
Specifically page 5(but its an interesting article)

ExtremeTech said:
The reason why LTE devices right now eat batteries for breakfast is because the network operators are forcing these devices into active dual-mode operation.
For Verizon Wireless, this means that all of their LTE devices connect to both CDMA2000 and LTE simultaneously and stay connected to both. This means that you are eating twice the amount of battery for every minute you are connected than you would if you were connected only to CDMA2000 or LTE. Additionally, when you make calls on Verizon Wireless LTE phones, the CDMA2000 radio sucks down more power because you are talking. Sending and receiving text messages causes pulses of CDMA2000 activity, which cuts your battery life more. Arguably, constantly changing radio states could be worse for battery life than a switch into one mode for a period of time and switching back, so text messages may actually kill the batteries faster.

Basically what Verizon is doing when 4G is on is forcing their phones to be running 1xRTT, CDMA2000(3G) and LTE at the same time.
Now the question is why would anyone do this? the reason why is so that when you leave the range of a 4G tower you are greeted immediately with 3G(no need to turn it on)
So some of you that live in areas where you constantly use 4G are saying "screw 3G i always have 4G" and that brings us to the point of the thread:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* on your dialer and go to Phone information:
Scroll down to "preferred network type.
It should say something like "CDMA + LTE/EvDO auto." this just means it will switch between 4G and 3G automatically.
GB:
Now look at the bottom and you will see "LTE mode (w/voice)"

Choose LTE, CDMA
ICS:
choose LTE, CDMA
Dont confuse this with VoLTE(voice over 4G) as it isnt
This just means that the 3G connection will not be running along with the 4G connection and should save battery.
Select the one corresponding to your firmware and Congrats, now your phone can only connect to 1x and LTE.
Everything will works as it normally would but if you leave the range of a 4G tower it will not automatically switch to 3G.

I do not see this option. Running Clean ROM developer edition (latest version), with just a system UI modification for a more AOSP theme. That mod is somewhere in the thread for the ROM.
My options:
CDMA only
EvDo only
GSM/WCDMA, CDMA, and EvDo (PRL)
CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto
GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto
CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/Lte auto
LTE only
LTE, CDMA
:/
Tried setting it to LTE only (hoping voice was just unmentioned) but it didn't work.

Yes I am, I always thought VZW's 3G ran on their CDMA network. I guess because I thought ExDo Rev A was part of the CDMA thing. Mobile technology is too convoluted. Too many bands and such haha.
1x - CDMA - voice/text messaging
3g - EvDO - Data
4G - LTE - Data
That's what Verizon uses. LTE, CDMA should be what we want. I'm testing this out and will report back later!

Sprint plans to debut the new LTE system by the end of the year, rolling it out to Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, and San Antonio. The rest of the country will be reportedly covered by the end of 2014, though company spokespeople have yet to confirm when and where it will launch until then.

I'm not sure a speed test with no one else on it really means anything. It's the same as when everyone is drooling over the fact they can see a lte signal is available in their neighborhood but they can't connect to it. But they promise it will be live soon. Gosh, isn't there something they promised us that others can see but we can't get? What was that......Hmmm?

QFT!
Had WiMax used 800mhz it would've done so much better! I've said that for a while. I don't think there is anything wrong with WiMax aside from the frequency Sprint and Clear uses.
LTE will be launched on the 1900 and eventually get to the 800. It will be on both depending on how far away you are from the tower. WiMAX will still have its own seperate tower and will still be 2.4Ghz

If you want to get technical, no one has a true 4G network. 4G standards are set at 100 mpbs while mobile and 1 gbps while stationary. Also, 50 mb down? Yea dude, in your dreams. My friends galaxy nexus normally gets around 10 mbps, and not much higher peak. Sprints new network will be very competitive with what Verizon and ATT offers, especially once they roll out LTE on the 800 mhz channel that iDEN is sucking up and when they partner it with clearwire's TDD-LTE network on 2500 mhz. Combined, they own more spectrum than any other carrier.

By that logic, Sprint LTE is 40+M down and 10+M up. Once you get people on the network, it turns to 12down/4up on both networks. I doubt we'll see any major difference between Verizon's and sprint's speeds.
Don't believe me? Switch to Verizon and run a speedtest on their LTE. If it goes faster than 15mbps down, I'll eat my nuts.
And as another user also said, nobody has a real 4G network yet. LTE-Advanced will reach real 4G speeds of 1GB down/100mb up.
I must say that no carrier has a true by the definition 4g network by definition a 4g network has 100 mbps still down speed and only train cars really have that and some private networks but no cell carriers not even Verizon has that

I'm patiently waiting for network vision to come to Raleigh NC, but I can't say that a bad ass Nexus device on Verizon later this year wouldn't make me switch. I'm loving unlimited data but I just might switch for being able to have the latest and greatest Nexus device when Sprint usually gets it months later. With a 2 GB plan, Verizon is the same price as Sprint for me but I would probably end up having to get a 4 GB plan since I use a bit more than 2 a month, but I would be willing to pay an extra 10 a month for an awesome phone and the incredible verizon 4G we have around here. I mean after all, I switched to Sprint because of the OG Evo.

My office is notorious for bad cell phone signal. For some reason in the office my Galaxy s4 seems to connect to 3g, which barely has any signal, until I reboot at which point it connects to the 4g network with one bar, which is still allot better than its 3g signal. My rezound always connected via 4g and it was fast enough to tether my Kindle, nexus 7, and laptop.
Any suggestions to improve signal or make it connect to 4g instead of 3g without rebooting?

Which app is this? I used to use LTE switch on my rezound. I could set it for LTE, CDMA and it would cut out 3g entirely. Most of the time my rezound preferred 4g, but would occasionally revert back to 3G. LTE switch or any other of the Play store LTE toggle apps do not work on the S4.....So what makes this one different?
Edit.... Ok so I installed it.....First THANK YOU. It's just like LTE switch...but it is slightly different. LTE switch had more radio options/combinations. WCdma would make the rezound lock up and go into an endless reboot cycle, so you had to use Cdma auto prl for 3g. But it had the standard LTE, CDMA, EVDO for 4G, 3G, and 1x. LTE only will not allow phone calls. so I used LTE, CDMA. Will the LTE/CDMA auto (prl) on this keep it from going to 3g like I had on the rezound?

Yeah this sucks. If I hit LTE it will switch to 4g and then I go back to lte/cdma/auto, and will switch back to 3g. If it had the ability to block evdo than it would stay in 4g or 1x only. Maybe this can be tweaked? The rezound had a number sequence you could dial to get into the same menu that lte switch would give you.

Phone Info is an android system app (pre loaded), this app is just a shortcut to it (rather than using a long dialer code to get in).

Swapped sim card - no change
factory reset - no change
enabled global mode - no change
Anyone have any luck with a warranty replacement? I'm starting to think I'm going to have to wait for an update.
So, I upgraded from the EVO 4G LTE today...
Now at home I can only get 3G instead of LTE!
I could get LTE on the EVO 4G LTE here before, now it's just 3G!
I do get better bars, though.
I have updated the profile and PRL
Is Sprint Spark running off different towers than regular LTE or something? That is the only thing I can think of that would do this.
Any ideas? I know LTE works near Sprint HQ.
Kind of bites, as now I will have to rely on wireless due to Sprint's abysmal 3G network...
Let me know if you have any ideas.
Try settings, network tab, more, mobile networks, network mode. Change it from global to lte/cdma. It seemed to work for me. Same issue.

Yep works. I did it and drove around a bit and it picked up Sprint Spark LTE. When I got back home, it is now on LTE with half bars (30 Mbps - 45 Mbps_ so I am happy :good:
[edit]
Curiously, this has come back. LTE tries to connect, but then drops to 3G.
Wondering if it's possibly just a tower issue by my home.
It could possibly be because the Evo LTE has 2 radios, while the spark devices only have 1. I've noticed that if I lose connection for any short amount of time, it drops to 3G and stays there for a long time.
I've found that if I
1) Place LG G3 next to window
2 Restart the phone
It jumps to LTE Spark. Otherwise, it defaults to 3G.
I get strong 3G and weak LTE inside, so I imagine the phone thinks I want the stronger connection over the faster one

Do you have connections optimizer turned off?

Yes, I had to turn that off immediately because it kept pushing me back on Wireless automatically.
I reproduced this problem elsewhere in my city, where - after a reboot - the phone jumped to LTE Spark.

Have you tried toggling airplane mode when this happens? To get the radios to reset? Works on my S5. If I drive through a particular part of town my device drops to 3G and won't jump back to 4G without either e reboot or a data radio reset. I've heard the problem has something to do with certain towers needing updates.

That - and the power off/on trick - both work about half the time.
I'm not sure why it is so inconsistent
I use LTE Discovery to reset data sometimes to get LTE connection. Much better solution than a reboot. Plus many other benefits on the app.

Welcome sir, because I'm a nerd, I have that program alert when I'm under spark band

This is what worked for me...but it resets your phone.
In your Sprint dialer, dial: ##72786#
That should reset your phone completely and give you consistent 4g lte. I had the same problem and thought i was going to have to return the g3, but fortunately that method of resetting fixed my problem. Just to note, hard resetting through the settings menu does not work the same for this situation.

Old thread i know, but this has something to do with the signal threshold. I have been dealing with it for years. Basically if i understand it correctly it will drop to 3g when 4g hots a certain signal threshold. I have found though that even with full 3g signal it is still increddibly slow compared to barely any 4g signal as far as data is concerned. The phone just thinks you are better off with the stronger 3g signal. It is good to hear i am not the only one who thi ks Sprints 3g is pitiful. I cannot load anything with it.....most webpages and apps give up before they load from 3g. I use Intelli3g to force my phone to stay on 4g because I have found that even the weakest 4g is better than my best 3g signal. Although using Intelli3g takes a bit of modding to your phone.... On the LG G3 ls990 it requires root...which is easy....but also twrp manager installed ...then you have to flash Xposed framework.....can be a bit scary but possible. This is the only way I know of to force your phone to stay connected to any signal 4g 3g 2g ect....just select fast network and slow network and flick the switch. This was a must app for me because where i am....signal is the worst. Screenshot of the app I use...
