I'm still so confused. What is what? And yes I've Google's and read Wikipedia but still hasn't awnsered me. Which one is the one is backhauled and they call 4g? (Not lte) like I know umts is 3g but then what is the other two? I know one of them is the backhauled 3g but then what is the other lol.

HSPA+ is what AT&T called '4G'. HSDPA (for faster download) and HSUPA (for faster upload) are all part of old 3G technologies. UMTS is even older. Technically HSPA+ is 3G as well.
The entire HSPA protocol stack is a giant evolving standard with many different revisions (called release). UNTS is first release. HSUPA is release 6. HSDPA is before that. Current AT&T 4G HSPA+ is at release 10. T-Mobile is release 10 or higher. Both companies call this 4G.
The first step required to upgrade WCDMA to HSPA is to improve the downlink by introducing HSDPA. The upgrade to HSDPA is often just a software update for most WCDMA networks, and as of May 2008 90 percent of WCDMA networks have been upgraded to HSDPA.
In other words...it's exactly what the person above me said...
That's odd, I read Wikipedia and it answered it for me.
Yea I know what they call 3g and 4g lol. Its just that my area last week just got 3g. And it says hspa under status. And even the att website here says its not the backhaulrd what they call 4g. And I was told hy 611 they we wouldnt gget backhauled speeds. But I have hspa. Download speeds always around 2mb down. Can't really test it cause when I'm in a known 4g area its still the same

Best explanation ever is found here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/17/2g-3g-4g-and-everything-in-between-an-engadget-wireless-prim/
Also what explains the issue with it and having 3bars of service phone calls work fine even with the h+ symbol but no data. It happens a lot. Its not just tmy phone either it does it with other androids and iI'm sick and tired of it

You have couple of issues there. First of all the status page on GS2 is known to be broken. It randomly flips through UMTS, HSPA and HSDPA etc. It is in no way reflect the actual protocol being used. Second of all, in most areas, 3G and 4G have no speed difference since they all over congested. You will only see signigicant difference in areas that are not densely populated. The signal icon of H+ is also not to be trusted. AT&T is known to stick to one icon for all protocols so that you can't easily find out which area is upgrade 4G and which is not.
Try dial *#0011# and see what the Samsung's diagnose screen says.
Yea iI know to not trust the status bar lol

Hello everyone,
following a thread I made in general regarding canadian owners, I have a specific question about HSPA+ speed you guys are getting on the UK model. Most people that posted in the thread were saying that they were not getting adequate speeds, a lot lower than what would be expected from an HSPA+ network.
Can people run a quick speed test running on HSPA+ and post the down and up results below please? I am on the verge on getting one from handtech but I need to know that I will be getting the speeds I am expecting (between 7.5 to 10 mbps down).
Please post location, signal strength and down/up speeds
thank you very much
This is what I got on AT&T with 4 bars in H+ (I'm in VA):
To DC:
Ping: 162ms
Down: 2163kbps
Up: 1088kbps
To VA:
Ping: 291ms
Down: 2545kbps
Up: 705kbps
To GA:
Ping: 141ms
Down: 2605kbps
Up: 1125kbps
To TX:
Ping: 312ms
Down: 1989kbps
Up: 1124kbpsz
that sounds terrible, thats not HSPA+, my old iphone 3g performs better than that!
What the hell is wrong, im really wondering if it's the phone or the network at this point...
I'm pretty sure it's the network. The Atrix, as well as the iPhone 4, I had before gave similar numbers. AT&T is still in the process of installing their "4G" network.
Took a speedtest the other day and got this. About the same speed my wife is getting on her Atrix.

Yep, I was hitting 8+mbps in Austin as well.
I get 6.5mbps on att 3g on my sgs1, and 3mbps on my s2.. att 3g is fast, hope updated firmware will kick my sgs2 into speed, should be even faster than the s1

Agree with ph00ny, if you do back to back runs, you'll invariably get different results. I just know for me in Austin, my SGS never went above 5 mbps, so to see 7~8 mbps results is positive.
This is down to the network and the capacity of the mast you are connected to, not the phone.
For instance one mast gave me 3.57/1.2, another 1.2/1.
However if your phone/dongle is only 7.2/2Mbps spec then obviously you won't get more than that etc.
Yeah, and in my area I think I'm right on the edge of an HSPA+ area, since my phone switches between H+ and 3G quite regularly. I'm sure if I was in an area with better HSPA+ reception my numbers would be better...but it does what I need it to do.

Difference between 3G and HSPA is usually a software update, when you connect, switching between them is normal.
T-Mobile in the UK restricts HSPA to contract only customers.

Mine doesn't seem to like the speedtest app, fails the upload speed about half-way every time over 3G, yet doing it through the website via flash works...
ANYONE HERE FROM UK ON orange with there sgs2 and gets a h+ signal???
I get H and 3g only in Norfolk, tbh the h speed its some times poor rarely over 1 mbit/ s
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
H & 3G here most of the time, too(Wolverhampton). I sometimes get G and have only once seen E. I think my top speed whilst on H was around 2Mbps, though. Can't really remember. It averages around 1.5Mbps. I don't think we'll be seeing true H+ speeds on Orange for quite a while yet, even if we do end up seeing the elusive H+ icon I doubt we'll be running any faster than we already are.
ok kool thanks guys yea i think max i have seen on H was near my home was 1.9mb but yes rarely is over 1mb
I'm in Leicester and just get 3G+ runs just over 1mb. No H+
yes benjatt im from leicester aswell i have max ever got 1.9mbs...some people in other coutries are getting some sickk speeds between 4-7mb when is the UK going to have speeds like this?
3G and H London. Never seen H+ yet
Northampton is pretty poor, as far as Orange signals go. The best I get is 3G+. I tend to be on wifi everywhere I go, if possible.
Wow not even London has H+? Quite surprised by that.
Tut, tut Orange. Get your act together already.
Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Lots of standard HSDPA (H) coverage over the city at a pretty solid 1.8 or so but never seen an H+ appear on my phone yet!
Sutton here, just outside London.
Never seen H+ on my phone, only H or 3G.
Oddly enough, I just starting getting H+ on my phone on orange literally half an hour ago!!!
I didn't even think we had that in the UK. I've seen it before in the states on my phone, and (oddly!) in Egypt on Etisalat's 3.75G network, but never here.
Must be a mistake.
I'm still not getting any faster speeds, only 200k/sec downloads.
Live in Northants.
Bolton here...
Only ever see 3G & H
G if i go in the toilets at work! Soooo frustrating. LOL

Blackpool O2, getting average 2.5mb/s on KL1 modem. Never got H+ though.

GiffGaff usually H and 3G in London, Central London I've got H+ in certain places. My speeds in good signal areas on H can go upto 3-4Mbps.

West London here, on the way to work (near Cambridge) I get H quite often. However, I noticed that in the same places I never got H on the stock ROM. I only seem to get H on MIUI (not tried other ROMs)
Im on t-mobile and have h+ most of the time...since the merger they have decieded to share their connections but you have to contact them and opt in for it.
Try contacting them and joining the tmobile connection...could possibly be the root of the cause
Just had a message from Orange to say to turn my phone off and on again in order to reconnect as they have just rolled out some speed/network improvements to the "high speed" network in the area.
Will see how the service is over the next few days but already had H pretty solidly across this area (Newcastle/Gateshead)
Mainly H with some 3g in Norwich, never seen H+ ever, typical H speed is about 2mbit/sec

I searched the Internet and could not find an explanation, but please feel free to point me in the right direction. Sometimes my Ookla speed test result indicates that LTE was used, but other times it says Ehrpd. Is there a difference between the two? For what it is worth, the speed test results using Ehrpd seem to be better than those on LTE. This may be explained by my use of the latest leaked radio though. Anyway, I appreciate your replies and hope you have a great day!
FWIW - I did find a site that indicated Ehrpd is used as a bridging technology that carriers use to transition to LTE. Ehrpd seems to manage hand-offs if my limited understanding is correct. My question should basically state, does Ehrpd indicate that I am not using a true 4G LTE data connection?
Thanks,

Erhrpd is a software solution that allows vzw to use exsisting cdma towers to pass over packets over to the lte network, the best way to explain it is that it is a bridge between cdma and lte. If ehrpd didn't exsist Verizon would have to either build new pure lte towers or add a ton of equipment to the exsisting towers to make them lte ready, this reduces some of that burden. Ehrpd is a critical technology that is allowing vzw to build out the lte infastructure as quickly and cost efficiently as possible.
So to answer your question It's not fake lte, when your running the speed test and you see ehrpd it is because the packets being sent by the app are broadcasting over lte to the tower and then being switched over to the exsisting cdma hardware which then can be processed in the back end by vzws network.

Ok, this has nothing to do with VOLTE. VOLTE simply stands for voice over long term evolution, and isn't a network technology. All it really means is that you are using data to make a voice call. This uses a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) service such as Skype.
So, basically, anytime you make a skype voice call over LTE you are using VOLTE. No difference in network. Nothing special.
Hope this cleared up any confusion
To be clear, the specification of true 4G LTE indicates voice service, which means Verizon's implementation of LTE isn't true 4G. When voice it implemented, they will have achieved true 4G. And the most important facet of achieving that is the elimination of CDMA radios in the phones. They are brutally power hungry, however, much longer range than Verizon's current deployment of LTE. I expect the deployment of VOLTE to also come with a robust improvement of the back side to support the load.
There is no LTE in Seattle yet, so I'm comparing the HSPA+ ("4G") speeds.
I'm returning the Skyrocket because of the screen issues, plus there is not LTE in Seattle and I don't care.
On my Skyrocket (HSPA+ using 4G Sim card) here are my data speed tests:
DOWN(kbps) UP(kbps) Ping(ms)
- 13767 1652 141
- 8852 1577 111
- 5391 1455 148
- 9944 1671 738
- 6102 1681 107
- 11301 1668 73
- 11028 1634 64
All of the tests were done on HSPA+ and NOT 4G LTE.
Are the HSPA+ speeds similar on the AT&T GS II?

Wow. You are getting really good speeds.
HSPA+ is capable of those speeds, so I would assume if you use i777 in your area, you can get same speed, if your test really were on HSPA+.
Fastest speed I ever got on my SG II was 3740kbps down and 1765kbps up.
Never seen 10+ Mbps you are showing, unless I was testing it on Wi-Fi.
Most common speeds I get is 1.x Mbps range for download and 600 to 800 kbps for up.
This is why I'm considering getting Skyrocket in hope of LTE will be faster. But because price difference is high I don't think I will switch..
I'm regretting signing 2 year contract with AT&T again. Horrible data network. At least in my area. (Fairfax county, VA)

My office is notorious for bad cell phone signal. For some reason in the office my Galaxy s4 seems to connect to 3g, which barely has any signal, until I reboot at which point it connects to the 4g network with one bar, which is still allot better than its 3g signal. My rezound always connected via 4g and it was fast enough to tether my Kindle, nexus 7, and laptop.
Any suggestions to improve signal or make it connect to 4g instead of 3g without rebooting?
a bunch of us friends get together every wednesday night at this chili's near our house and for some reason the second we go inside our 4G drops out. we all have samsung phones, note 2's, S3's and now my S4 and the best way we found to restore our 4G when in the building, toggle airplane mode on and off. we go from having no 4G, to full blown 4G

Which app is this? I used to use LTE switch on my rezound. I could set it for LTE, CDMA and it would cut out 3g entirely. Most of the time my rezound preferred 4g, but would occasionally revert back to 3G. LTE switch or any other of the Play store LTE toggle apps do not work on the S4.....So what makes this one different?
Edit.... Ok so I installed it.....First THANK YOU. It's just like LTE switch...but it is slightly different. LTE switch had more radio options/combinations. WCdma would make the rezound lock up and go into an endless reboot cycle, so you had to use Cdma auto prl for 3g. But it had the standard LTE, CDMA, EVDO for 4G, 3G, and 1x. LTE only will not allow phone calls. so I used LTE, CDMA. Will the LTE/CDMA auto (prl) on this keep it from going to 3g like I had on the rezound?

Yeah this sucks. If I hit LTE it will switch to 4g and then I go back to lte/cdma/auto, and will switch back to 3g. If it had the ability to block evdo than it would stay in 4g or 1x only. Maybe this can be tweaked? The rezound had a number sequence you could dial to get into the same menu that lte switch would give you.
New sim fixed the issue for me.

It looks like this is just the Phone Info shortcut app.
Phone Info is an android system app (pre loaded), this app is just a shortcut to it (rather than using a long dialer code to get in).
I tried the long dialer code (*#*#4636#*#*) but that did not work. This app did the trick for me. Many thanks for posting it.
This also happens to me....see below. It shows i have 4G, but isn't connecting to it.
