[Q] Data speeds vs Skyrocket (HSPA) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

There is no LTE in Seattle yet, so I'm comparing the HSPA+ ("4G") speeds.
I'm returning the Skyrocket because of the screen issues, plus there is not LTE in Seattle and I don't care.
On my Skyrocket (HSPA+ using 4G Sim card) here are my data speed tests:
DOWN(kbps) UP(kbps) Ping(ms)
- 13767 1652 141
- 8852 1577 111
- 5391 1455 148
- 9944 1671 738
- 6102 1681 107
- 11301 1668 73
- 11028 1634 64
All of the tests were done on HSPA+ and NOT 4G LTE.
Are the HSPA+ speeds similar on the AT&T GS II?

Awesome! thanks for the reply!

Wow. You are getting really good speeds.
HSPA+ is capable of those speeds, so I would assume if you use i777 in your area, you can get same speed, if your test really were on HSPA+.
Fastest speed I ever got on my SG II was 3740kbps down and 1765kbps up.
Never seen 10+ Mbps you are showing, unless I was testing it on Wi-Fi.
Most common speeds I get is 1.x Mbps range for download and 600 to 800 kbps for up.
This is why I'm considering getting Skyrocket in hope of LTE will be faster. But because price difference is high I don't think I will switch..
I'm regretting signing 2 year contract with AT&T again. Horrible data network. At least in my area. (Fairfax county, VA)

They dont have LTE in Seattle YET. so yeah it was HSPA+....
if you're going to switch to the Skyrocket, be warned; the screen issue.

Just ran test to see what I get right now.
638kbps down, 1284kbps up, 110ms ping.
AT&T data speeds are a joke!..

Not in Seattle

No hspa+ in my area
I Max out at about 3mbps down...

Edit: when I visited the family in Miami I was getting consistent 7mbps down...

According to AT&T my area falls under HSPA+, but still I get really slow speed.
Is there anyway to find out what connection my phone is using?
Network status indicator on the phone shows H+, but that can be miss leading.

I DO have HSPA+ in my area, and never see as high as 3. There are several devs on here that live in edge only areas.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)

im having the same slowness only worse. its bad when sprints 3g is faster than at&t's.

I had the gs2, and the fastest I ever got on hspa was around 2000. Skyrocket has gotten as high as 7900 on hspa. When tested in the same location on the same server (tested sequentially twice), the SR was always at least 2x as fast.

[Q] North Americans owners - HSPA+ speeds

Hello everyone,
following a thread I made in general regarding canadian owners, I have a specific question about HSPA+ speed you guys are getting on the UK model. Most people that posted in the thread were saying that they were not getting adequate speeds, a lot lower than what would be expected from an HSPA+ network.
Can people run a quick speed test running on HSPA+ and post the down and up results below please? I am on the verge on getting one from handtech but I need to know that I will be getting the speeds I am expecting (between 7.5 to 10 mbps down).
Please post location, signal strength and down/up speeds
thank you very much
This is what I got on AT&T with 4 bars in H+ (I'm in VA):
To DC:
Ping: 162ms
Down: 2163kbps
Up: 1088kbps
To VA:
Ping: 291ms
Down: 2545kbps
Up: 705kbps
To GA:
Ping: 141ms
Down: 2605kbps
Up: 1125kbps
To TX:
Ping: 312ms
Down: 1989kbps
Up: 1124kbpsz
that sounds terrible, thats not HSPA+, my old iphone 3g performs better than that!
What the hell is wrong, im really wondering if it's the phone or the network at this point...
I'm pretty sure it's the network. The Atrix, as well as the iPhone 4, I had before gave similar numbers. AT&T is still in the process of installing their "4G" network.
Took a speedtest the other day and got this. About the same speed my wife is getting on her Atrix.

Agree with ph00ny, if you do back to back runs, you'll invariably get different results. I just know for me in Austin, my SGS never went above 5 mbps, so to see 7~8 mbps results is positive.
This is down to the network and the capacity of the mast you are connected to, not the phone.
For instance one mast gave me 3.57/1.2, another 1.2/1.
However if your phone/dongle is only 7.2/2Mbps spec then obviously you won't get more than that etc.
Yeah, and in my area I think I'm right on the edge of an HSPA+ area, since my phone switches between H+ and 3G quite regularly. I'm sure if I was in an area with better HSPA+ reception my numbers would be better...but it does what I need it to do.

Difference between 3G and HSPA is usually a software update, when you connect, switching between them is normal.
T-Mobile in the UK restricts HSPA to contract only customers.

Mine doesn't seem to like the speedtest app, fails the upload speed about half-way every time over 3G, yet doing it through the website via flash works...

Sprint Customers, what are your 4g speeds?

So I will be changing from my Vibrant to the Evo 3d. I'm kinda concerned about some of the reports about sprints 4g wimax download speeds. Some of them say they get an average of 1.5mb/s.
My Galaxy S gets 5 mb/s in a good spot, and about 1 to 1.5 mb/s at home. I live just north of Atlanta so I should be getting 4g at my house.

here in new orleans we dont have 4G, But we have a great 3g network. I get a consistent 1050-1120 kbps no matter what time of the day I or where I test. I guess the benefits of having 3 highways run straight through the city and as you may know we had a little hurricane come by and wipe everything out. It took a year to get back 3G here. You would think that they would have just put up the wimax system then ( late 2007), but maybe it was not in phase yet. Durring the hurricane the only system that stayed up and running was sprint. Everyone else was out of order and it left thousands without a way to communicate.
Anyway my pops lives in a suburb of Chicago and when I was there I got 4G speeds of 3mbps at his house, and 2.2 - 6mbps in the city depending on if I was outside or inside.

Wow...crazy ranges there that I'm calling BS on without proof.
I'm in Chicago and have seen 5mb/s on my EVO once or twice...usually it's right around 2mb/s (very, very sad, since I could do more than that on 3G back in Iowa).
On my Overdrive, on a good day, it'll get up to 6mb/s but if I stay there too long they'll kill my connection (yes, no throttling, just straight up kill the connection).
I have also used 4G in Dallas, Seattle, Kansas City, and I believe somewhere else (Tulsa??) and they're all about the same speed. If anything, i would say Dallas was the fastest (maybe up to 6-7mb/s on my Overdrive).
All I know is the 4G on the EVO is horrible. I played with a Thunderbolt (Verizon, obviously) and it was doing 10+mb/s constantly on Internet Speed Test. If it weren't so expensive to have two data lines with them, I would've made the switch a couple months ago when my contract was up....

What speeds should I be getting with LTE?

As the title says what are the speeds I should be getting. I am in the Los Angeles, O.C. area and with speed test at anytime I can get anywhere from 4Mbps to 20Mbps with it generally hovering around 7-8Mbps. I thought LTE was suppose to be a good deal faster than GSM 3G, which is suppose to be around 3-7Mbps. Now is speeds I get normal, or is there something wrong? If there really is something wrong, what are my options? Thanks.
That is average it just depends how many people in your area are using you network I've seen up to 27mpbs during off peak times but average 5-10 during the day

Then what is this that I see people showing they get like 23+Mbps and that is like normal for them. I spoke to a Verzion tech and said 5-10Mbps is normal, but it would be advised to go into a local store and compare speeds with another Rezound model just to double check and see if my phone is working normally.
i average about 13-15 mbps down and about 1mbps up and thats in phoenix
and look at there ISP on the speedtest things its not through verizon
I average around 13-20mbps download and 3-8mbps upload and i live in central florida.
Honestly, I get 20 to 30+ in baltimore city at all times. At work in the building that blocks Tmobile and sprint signal I get.. Like 15?
Best I got was at the inner harbor at pf changs, got like 44mpbs.

I'm in the Metro Detroit area and we have 4g pretty much everywhere. With a weak signal I get 3-6 down and 1 up, but when my signal is strong I get between 13-16 down and 10-13 up. Oddly enough, though I get a better signal on average with the rezound than when I had galaxy nexus, the galaxy nexus seemed to pull higher speeds when it did have a good 4g signal. I topped out around 35 down and 20 up with the galaxy nexus. It couldn't hold a 4g signal like the rezound does though. It would kick back to 3g off and on.
They are not advertising a speed yet because it changes so much due to demand and infrastructure. I have gotten over 60 mbps. But average 30mbps. The larger your city, the higher the demand. I live by Notre Lame so demand isn't as high as your big cities. Give it a year or 2 I'm sure they will sell speed based packages instead of bandwidth like cable does.

im getting about the same thing here in greensboro
I get around 15mbps in Central NJ (New Brunswick). When I went up to NYC I was getting about 20mbps.
It really depends on how close you are to the tower and how many people have LTE in your area.
I'm about an hour outside of Houston and I average 25-30 down and 10 up.
So then my speeds are typical for a large metro area, like where I am located?
3g GSM's specs say it can allow 3-7mb/s, but I bet most people out there with 3g devices pull about 700kb/s to maybe 1mb/s in a place with a strong signal. I had an Incredible 2 before this phone and the fastest internet speed I had was 1mb/s standing next to a tower. LTE is lightyears ahead of 3g. I personally think 7-8mb/s is great, not outstanding, but for surfing the web, downloading ROMs, and watching videos its more than enough for most. The 20mb/s + speeds are more for show than anything...
In Hollywood CA I get around 15-20 mbps up and 10-15 mbps down

4g...?

For the first time I'm in a city with 4g. Excitedly I check my phone... Full bars yea! So I open a web page and I see it isn't much faster the 3g so I do a speed test and prove my hypothesis. After 3 test I don't see a huge difference is that a tower thing or what I don't care I use WiFi at home and don't really need that much speed when I am away from my house or school I just expected more.

Try downloading a Rom on 3g vs 4g. At roughly 500mb 3g would take hours. With my lower then average 4g area at my house it still only takes a few minutes. If I go to certain areas around town its even faster.
My 4G is faster than the wifi in my house about 8/10 times with the average around 15-20mbps with the highest I've gotten is around 40.
I'm able to download a 500mb file in about 5 minutes or less.
My 4g smokes my Comcast line, and I have the faster residential since I have Directv. I get low end 8-10 and I have found over 40 a couple times around Metro Detroit.

I also agree that it depends on the city. I'm in Houston and see a dramatic difference between my 3g and 4g. I could never go back to just 3g now and for the rare occurance I'm not in a 4g area, I usually won't even mess with my phone.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
my 4g varies from .85 to 30 mbps down. Just hit or miss. Depends on the time of day I guess.
It all depends on location. It could be the towers, the signal strength, or how many people are using 4G in that location. When I'm at work I usually only pull 8-10 Mbps, but in other areas I've gotten around 20 Mbps. Not quite as fast as my home internet, but very close. I wish I were fortunate to live some place where I could pull 40+ Mbps speeds like I see some people do, but alas, it wasn't meant to be...

When I work in Houston my 4G averages about 22Mb/s, but when I have to work in Texas City (an hour down the road from Houston) and the 4G tower there gives me about 16Mb/s. Both of which blow my 3G speeds away.
I guess different towers just work better.

T-Mobile 4G LTE Crazy fast!

OK, I am blown away at how fast T-Mobile 4G LTE is.
I get crazy speeds. Like over 85Mbps. I even get over 100Mbps at times. That's faster then my Comcast. LOL [emoji1] T-Mobile really does have the fastest 4G LTE in the Nation. I am loving T-Mobile service. Beats Sprint Spark LTE. Anyways what do you guys think? [emoji4]

Also, around 50. I'm in Lake Ridge, Northern Virginia -just 20 minutes from Washington DC. T-Mobile in the last year has really boost the speed in this area, a year ago I got less than 10 Mbps.
Hahaha this is what I get . Im in Georgia south of Atlanta

I get close to that depending on what part of my city I'm in. Normally I get high 20's to low 40's.
Considering network load during the daytime, that's pretty good for most carriers. At night I can go above 70.

These are indeed crazy numbers. Only after the recent software upgrade did my speeds go up into the mid 20's. I tried multiple phones in the last year and a half trying to get higher than 5-7 mbps. Just gave up and pegged it to being in a low spot at my residence (?). I posted here that I thought that a trip to the USVI summer before last had screwed up my data speed on Tmo's side. They told me twice that my settings on their end were screwy.
I'm not a power user so never really had performance that I was unhappy with overall. I love my S5. I have been seeing these low speeds when I check with Speedtest. Just got a refurbed Note3 (which I like a lot) and my speedtest tells me it is giving me between 13 and 24 over 4 tests. I'm happy with that.
Have never in nearly two years of LTE here seen anything over 28 mbps, so 80 is pretty impressive indeed.
Also a question-My Speedtest app's "odometer" tops out at 50mbps.......?
wish I could get that high of speed
Usually only get 18Mb/sec down and 7 up. Called them and they said it was pretty much the only tower north of the river here in Kansas City that was LTE enabled. YAY me...../sarcasm
Over my wifi, I get the usual 100Mb/sec down and 6 up as that is what I pay Time Warner for. So no complaints there.
Using Twizted Lollipop 5.0 V1 as well on my S5.
Super fast.
Cali speed suks. ..
From home I get 70+... fastest speedtest was 106mbps. So insane and way faster than the 40mbps with comcast which I always thought was unbeatable in the area.
So anyone getting throttled for downloading torrents or other stuff. A few months ago I posted a link saying tmobile would throttle your data if they find out your using your unlimited 4g Lte to download stuff. Well it's been a few months and I'm still going strong. I still can't believe Tmobile Is faster then Comcast. That's just crazy. Wonder how Sprints data service is going. Lol not the Spark network is complete crap. Sprint Says The Spark is the nation's fastest data service. They must be smoking to much crack. Because I know some people that have Sprints Spark LTE data service and it can't even get 10Mbps most of the time. And the data goes off and on all day long. I even tried Sprint Spark network with the Galaxy s5 and after a week I gave it back and switched back to tmobile. So T-Mobile Rocks!
I can confirm that I too get pretty fast speeds. I was blown away a few days ago with these results!

And of course this is with my S4. I just bought my S5 today since my S4 broke today.
