I don't know if it affects phones other than the Eris, but users can't play HQ videos from YouTube over the phone's 3G connection. Apparently, and I haven't confirmed this myself (but can and will), it will work over WiFi.
I know on jail-broken iPhones and iPods, there is an app available that tricks other apps into thinking it's connected via whatever connection you tell it. For example, I could tell the YouTube app that I always connect with WiFi. Then, it would play HQ videos.
Is such a think available for Android ? Would such a thing be difficult to implement ?
This would be neat, someone might have a trick.
This has already been a discussion and last time i checked there was no way of doing this. It sounds like a great idea and if there is an update i would love to hear it!
im going to bump this thread in hopes of getting this to work so i can start the NFL mobile app on 3G.
Right now i have to open the app on wifi and then make sure i dont exit it. It works fine on 3g after the switch, i just cant start it on 3g.
Has anyone came out with anything since then that will trick my phone into thinking its on wifi?
i'd rather be able to have my phone say it's on 3g, while it's on wifi. several sprint apps don't work over wifi, for some stupid reason
Well either way, the mfl mobile app only works if you start it on wifi for ATT, so if there was a way to get it working it would be awesome.
I know you can do this on the iphone for apps that only work on wifi. Theres gotta be a way to get it to work on android.....

I have the same problem with NFL mobile on my att captivate. There has to be a way to figure this out.
+1 on this...
I'm on 4G with tmobile and it's actually faster than my home cable internet... ugh this restriction is soooo stupid!! It's one of the few things I miss about iOS
HQ YouTube works fine over 3G on Vibrant
This would also be very useful for playing Gameloft games like N.O.V.A which require Wifi.
+1 for further development on this

Yes, I bought Splinterl cell and modern combat 2 but can't even download the remaining data as it requires Wifi...The 3g speed is good and constant.why gameloft makes such stupid decissions..let the users decide what network the want like in games such as assasin creed or hero of sparta..
I'm using Galaxy s2 if it matters and any such trick would be verry helpful.

Download this... and place it on the root of your SDcard. This will fix your "wifi-only" game data downloads. Works for gameloft games, might work for others.
To actually play the game online (this might work for the NFL app) download an app called "wireless tether for root users" now you need to follow these directions exactly!
1. Turn on wifi (don't connect, just turn it on)
2. Turn on the Wireless Tether app (this will shut off wifi)
3. Before! Before! Before! You get the message Stating "wireless tether for root users has been granted superuser permissions" you need to reenable wifi! If you do not do it exactly that way, wifi will say "error" but if you do it right, your good to go! You can now play that game without a wifi connection. I also play Nova 2.. So yes

There is a hack Gtalk app that let you use it over 3g. It's posted here somewhere just do a search
Hey MoPho's - so the google wifi tether app works great with 4g / sprint and a laptop - read a few preliminary posts on how this might not work on tablets (adhoc issues), such as the Nexus 7; that I picked up the other day.
Has anyone had any success with any form of tethering with our photon and this one?
I've read some posts of using PDANet on one the tablet and FoxFi on the phone to get some functionality working via Bluetooth - however, not everything [app or system specific] is functioning.
Well, I'm just on a rooted stock only sprint rom - it would be cool if by chance you had this tablet [nexus 7] or something similar to where you were able to get data/internet functioning fine via our carrier's data through either bluetooth or wifi tethering. Thanks and cheers.

Ah, yes - thanks for this I'll have to try this in the evening sometime - I hope this will give some better/full functionality over the BT maybe...
I did try the PDANet installed on the N7 and FoxFi on the Photon for bluetooth - tried connecting to sprint 4g prior to it and then paired the BT between each other and it seemed to work. Only web browsing seemed to work for me in this case, trying to send an email via Gmail app didn't seem to work.

The only prob with this method that I found is you can only use 3g not 4g when tethering

Indeed so (at least for now perhaps). Just came in to reply and say this exactly
I'm on the nexus 7 as we speak connected via the instructions/video above + tethered to my photon (with google wifi tether v3.1 beta 14) and an ad-free data on-off by antonio la rocca on google play market)
I was able to see the SSID on the photon and enter my password via wpa2.
Got a popup message saying that not subscribed to hotspot service from sprint / the 4g kept dropping -
So disabled that and left default 3g - which works so far. At least Gmail from my previous post is working...sent test email from nexus to gmail photon app.
Would be sweet if there was a 4g workaround... maybe another profile?
Before the nexus 7, I was using the same wifitether app without data enabler widget to tether my laptop and used the droid cdma profile, and I was able to use 4g on that... didn't enable MSS clamping until now...
The 4g at least allowed uninterrupted voice and data...
Maybe some others have some more input, but thanks again for confirming that.
One other thing I noticed was that the wifi widget hangs upon closing everything - needed to reboot photon / perhaps I need to look over the disconnect process better - just canceled it from the top. Not a major issue, just pointing out.

This is a little late. Just got my nexus7 and use FoxFi Pro (can't give a link because the powers that be decided to throttle that. I'm about sick of moderators, politicians cops and the general "I'm da law" types, but I digress) it cost $7. Use the Bluetooth tether from FoxFi and no problems so far. And yes, it works on 4g since you aren't using the wifi. Haven't bothered with PDAnet tho it comes with it. But so far it's great. I did lose connection once and had to change the network name on the wifi and did get a note saying that my Sprint account does not include tether...but so long as I'm not going overboard on g's I don't think they'll even notice.
I have the option checked in youtube to pre-load some videos. Since Sprint's 3G connection blows and is almost useless in most cases, I figured this is an amazing feature. One problem is that it doesn't work when I'm on said 3G connection. It works on Wifi when I try to pull up pre-loaded videos but when I'm on 3G it just says "Server Connection Error" every time. Anyone else experience this?
For reference I'm not rooted and on the lastest OTA firmware.
hi guyz.....i recently purchased grand 2 and im facing a wierd problem.
im not able to use facebook using my wifi...i have 2mbps plan and still the it doesnt loads up news feeds but it works with the mobile network.
therefore i thought that its a problem in my wifi and i downloaded hotspot shield and my facebook worked!!!!!
same is the problem is in whatsapp.
i can receive media but im not able to send but when using hotspot shield everythng works fine.
but i use my wifi on my iphone and lumia and everything works perfect without using any app.
im really scared as its a new set.plz help
I cannot use my Nexus 6 or Nexus 9 on WiFi, B/C I don't get my Gmail Emails & Snapchat won't tell me someone sent me something & Also this texting app I use called TextPlus won't tell me I got a Text Message until I turn off WiFi? I can use the Web listen to songs via Google Music All Access. The Videos on YT or Music on Google Music take a few seconds to load, Anybody else having this problem? I have other devices on WiFi like the usual Smartphones and Laptops with One Motorola XOOM Tablet that has never had this problem. I have Comcast Extreme 105 using an Docsis 3.0 Modem with the T-Mobile CellSpot ASUS Router.
Edit: Anyway I can fix this? It would be nice to use this tablet on WiFi most of the time since I get 5GB a month I would really not wanna used that up in a week because I don't get my emails on WiFi.
Edit: the tablet & Nexus 6 works fine on WiFi just that Gmail, Snapchat or Textplus won't work on WiFi to tell me I have new updates on them.
