[Q] Smallest Android-based "PMP" w/ active XDA deveopment? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm looking to pick up an "mp3" player. I put that in quotes because I want to be using my music service on it... not just play actual mp3 files. Obviously my phone works great for this but I'm looking for something small that I don't really care about taking out on the trail/river/etc.
Anyway, wondering what the smallest, android based player might be that has some active xda development. I love custom roms on my phone so would enjoy hacking this device as well.
I'm looking for something with wifi... but NOT any cell capabilities - though obviously if it'll function fine without cell service then I don't care if it has them or not.
Right now, I was looking into the Archos 43. It's still kind of big though (4.3" display)... so I was hoping there might be something smaller out there with some active development.
Thanks!!

Not android, but a zune ?
Otherwise, I think Samsung released a wifi-only version of the Galaxy S, seemed pretty rad.

Not going to happen I'd say.
Most PMPs have only one sole purpose. Play Music. A screen smaller than 4 inches means, it'd be useless for anything else other than Music. I'd say go for an iPod that supports iOS apps.

I would buy a cheap android phone, stick cm7 on it and put it in airplane mode, maybe a zte blade (orange sanfransisco in uk) £70 new.

Yea, that'd do as well. But, sometimes, the sound quality of most mobile phones stand up to that of a mp3 player. That should be taken into account as well. As a thumb rule, Motorola phones have good sound quality.
Just search around if you want a phone. You might find even cheaper phones.

Getting tired of waiting...Where's the Galaxy Player 5.0's successor Samsung?!

My 5.0 is a bit banged-up and I'm wavering toward getting a refurbed unit as a backup before they all go and/or this one gives up the ghost, but I'd rather have something new.
- 7-inch tablets are a bit larger and bulkier than what I want. (The new Nexus 7 is a good deal, but....its still a tablet...without a microsd card slot.)
- Smart phones are too damn expensive and I'd really rather *not* have an OLED screen.
Samsung seems able to release every size and format of device except a media-centric device in the 5"-6" range.
I'd even settle for the 5.8 inch upgrade that was released in Korea sans a camera flash right about now.
Anyone else even a bit miffed at Samsung's firm focus on tablets and smartphones now?
I'm not complaining really. I still love love love my 5.0, but I hope this isn't the end of the line for this format in this size.

If the market was there, and large enough, rest assured, they would get to work on it immediately. I'm not sure the market is there for smaller-than-tablet devices.

The market may have shriveled to a pathetic nub for all I know, but I wish to add my voice to the OPs. That post pretty well describes me (perhaps there's a fair number of us holding the fort; dare I hope?).
I often dryly state that i am 'between jobs' so a smartphone w/ contract really isn't an option for me right now, but I'd dearly love to dump such shekels as I can spare into a quality pocketable Android device that is still being supported. My beloved Sansa has begun to show its age, so I won't be able to put the decision off too much longer. Hear me, O Mighty Samsung Gods, all I ask is one last pseudo-Luddite-indulging hurrah...

You may be right, but surely South Koreans aren't the only ones who buy PMPs. I'm sure they'd sell more if they offered them worldwide.
Maybe they're going to offer the YP-GP1-5.8 reissue soon stateside/worldwide (It's been about a year since it was released in Korea) after the market there becomes saturated with them and they have a ton of parts left lying around and need to make a profit on them.
Or maybe not. The Nexus 7-2nd Gen. *is* starting to look a bit more attractive though....just a bit...
I think actually the galaxy player is a good alternative to expensive tablets and phone and these mixtures because. But something new wouldn't be bad...
A little bit more power and RAM would be enough
The Design might be a little bit more rounded but the size is nearly perfect

I don't think it is that. The market is here, but the thing is Samsung is the only company from what I seen that made an android PMP player. Also with this market you have to make the device a great price, and that's any where from $100-$150. I'd say $200 but then people would be all like "Well I can get a nexus 7 for that price"
I want an upgrade also. Sucks that the galaxys players are not as popular as ipods

Yes it really sucks but the problem is a lack of marketing for our device. Most people asking about my player are really impressed of its size and the fact that it's running android. They find it way better than these boring Apple iPods
Murphy's Law indicates that if I lose my cool and opt for a Nexus 7 'consolation prize', Samsung will release a dream device the next day
Ipods aren't even that popular anymore. Look how long it took Apple to refresh their lineup.

but lets face the truth, there is no way samsung is gonna make a ~200 media player thats as good as the N7.
Lets examine the specs:

Yep but that's considering Google is selling the nexus 7 at cost. Also the SGP got released nearly 2 years ago, give it a break on the specs sheet, Lool. It's not even comparable.

Same here! I'm with the OP! I'm still glad to know there are a lot of people out there that share my opinion on the need for an updated Player (sans phone/plan)!

Ideas for old Android devices?

Hey all! I've got a nice new S3 that is my main phone, but I have an ole Samsung Replenish running 2.3.6 that a friend wasn't using so they said I could have it. I figured, hell, any device that runs Android has to have SOME use no matter how old and slow it is (This thing is 600mhz and 256mb RAM, 512mb built in storage).
So, do you have any idea what I could use it for? I can of course slap a couple GB of storage on top through microSD, but I haven't found any really good uses that appeal to me.
The things I've currently thought of are :
Music player (I prefer my Galaxy S3 though)
GPS (Again, prefer my S3)
Gaming device (Prefer my PSP Go)
Remote for itunes/music/ etc (Unified Remote, but I don't really have a use for it)
Of course could be used as a very lightweight webserver type thing, but I don't really have a good use for that, either (would use my Raspberry Pi for that)
The battery still works well enough and I have big enough pockets that if someone can think of a good use for an old, slow android phone I'd be willing to take it with me and keep it charged up!
What kind of things do you think I might be able to do with it?
I'd consider selling it but the back is worn down and the edges are scratched up enough that, considering it's already a "Great condition for $30" phone, I really don't think I'll be getting more than 10 bucks out of it, so not worth it.

Because I totally don't own one of those already -.-
I think cyanogenmod 7 would be a good start.
Currently, I'm running Rapured ROM and Debian 7 in dual boot.
Raptured is based on ice cream sandwich, so you might not necessarily upgrade that high, however, Debian supports ARM v6 and up and both are lightweight and lightning fast.
I've also installed a 64 GB micro sd card, which works great.
I also installed the metroappstore.apk from Android forums.

iPod Android-Like device

Hi, I have been looking for a while now for an iPod like android device. (No cell phone service, uses wi-fi and Bluetooth, etc.) But I haven't found anything that jumps out at me. I have seen the Samsung Galaxy Players and they seem to be running very old android versions and are hard to find. I also have thought of a no-contract, cheap android phone but can't find one. Please help me out if you know of anything that could maybe fit my needs! Thanks!

I've heard of old phones with ROM's to make them into music players. Reason you don't see any Android music players is cause Ipods is used by Apple to suck up more money from there hordes of Isheep.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
This might not suit you, but you can pick up a HD2 quite cheap now and put tons of ROMs on them. I don't think it runs KitKat without issue, but as long as you can get up to JB (or even ICS) then you should be happy with it (plus you can always play about with several other OSs that run on it, if you so fancy).

Is the Padfone X a good buy?

I'm thinking about getting one, to replace an Atrix HD and Nexus 7 3G 2012.
The concept sound cool, and the price is nice on contract, I'm just wondering how people feel about the execution after some weeks of ownership.

If you are in need of a new phone and new tablet the padfone X can be a good option. Just remember the tablet does not work without the phone attached to it. Some see this a blessing, others a curse. Personally I like the setup, I do not have to sync two separate devices and the cost is great. Others need to have have two separate devices that can each operate on its own.
The phone part of the Padfone X works just fine by itself and is high quality. Call quality is good, people do not realize they are on speakerphone even when the phone is docked into the pad.
The pad is a little on the heavy side and with its 1inch bezel looks somewhat old school, but what it lacks in form it makes up in function. It works great as a tablet. Both the screen on phone and pad are vibrant and responsive. I have not ran across any phone apps that do not work well while in the tablet mode. You can make calls and text while the phone is docked. Some reviewers have complained about some apps not transitioning well when the phone is being docked or undocked. This has not been really been an issue for me as I usually do not need app to transfer. I usually just close an app then remove the phone. The call and text apps seem to transition well.
The slot which holds the phone into the pad protudes from the back a bit. This a slight annoyance as the pad is a little unstable sitting flat on a flat surface. But the phone is held real securely in the pad while at the same time being easy the insert or remove.
The camera is pretty sweet. It work fast and the color is good.
The speaker volume is adequate but I would liked just a bit louder. That being said, I have yet to install a volume booster.
If someone was needing only a phone, perhaps another high-end phone would be a better option. If someone is in the market for both a tablet and phone, I would give the Padphone X a good look.

So far, I am loving mine. My only concern is it currently does not work with ART. This could mean no Android L for us, but the ART is fairly new and I am sure ASUS will update their system apps to work with the new runtime. Other than that, its fantastic. Android wear support, fast, decent storage, SD card slot, amazing battery life with the dock. I bought this a bit impulsively, but I do not regret it in the least. The design of both the phone and dock are a bit on the bland side, but they are in no way ugly, and the displays are impressive, so they look nice. Really, it comes down to you. Go to an AT&T store and try one on display.
It's new so root and rom options are still limited.

What are the rom options?
Sent from my ASUS PadFone X using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
None, for now.
But there's a xda forum and it's out in the US so I think there will be choices later, unlike previous PadFones which are stuck to stock roms.
Should i keep it?
Well, I've had this phone almost 12 days...soon is last call to return it if I don't want it.
The main selling point was the tablet mode. My stepson broke my Android tablet and my Windows PC tablet was less functional than my HTC One m7. I frequently use Office 365 sharepoint, Ring Central, Google Voice, and telephone. Bigger screen with functional app makes the day much nicer.
And the hardware and camera seemed comparable.
I don't like the "glitchieness" I've run into running different default messaging apps and launchers. I also get a lag with multiple processes running, even when limiting processes in developer options and when using a task killer.
I also like to try different roms and change the appearance a lot. I don't know how to contribute to this much besides donation.
So I'm kinda thinking about a big screen phone like a Note or the LG Curve...whichever has more developer interest.
Anybody regret their purchase or would choose a different phone is they were me?

I do not regret my decision to keep the Padfone X but it meets my needs. My Padfone does not have the glitchiness you have encountered.
Your needs seem to be more demanding and perhaps a separate phone and tablet are in order.
On a related note, I have rarely regretted my decision after returning an item.
Well, late last night I got bored and got adventurous. I wiped the phone, salt super su, installed TWRP. I have actually not had a problem this time. It's running apex launcher, thumb keyboard, some widgets and live wallpaper and its working fine. Knock on wood.
The only thing I did different this time was installing the recovery and I didn't go into the developer settings and turn the animation of.

How is your Padfone S going? I'm looking to get that model specifically over the X. Basically, of what I've heard of the phone, at best it's above average, and at worst, still just above average, haha. So, fairly mediocre in its reviews. Do you find it to be the same?

To be honest... it does have some issues but updates are being pushed very fast... today i received a 250 mb update.
Sometimes the home button doesnt responds for a few seconds, and stuff like that.
But i am very satisfied with it. My battery combined with the station is great on moderate to lot of usage... i watched 6 twitch dota 2 matches over 4g on the phone alone, then watched 3 more on wifi with tablet mode... 24 hours later the phone alone had still 30%, and that felt great.
The phone is fast almost 99% of the time, and at least the camera is a big upgrade for me (had a Moto X).
Tablet mode is great but beware, the phone does become a little loose and touch sensitivity is totally lost on some areas of the screen, so you must keep ensuring that the phone is properly in place if you move a lot. Just ensure the phone in proper place and it works great.
So far, i am very happy with the phone... i usually buy flagships (htc one, moto x) and right now i dont want to use another, i love this one.
Several glitches have been resolved so i am counting on ASUS to fix the rest.
Hope this helps.

Finally talked my wife into getting a smartphone. She didn't like using my phone and protested saying she would hate a smartphone. To complicated and hard to understand. I bought her the Padfone X. Started her off on the tablet which made the transition to the phone easier for her to understand. She hasn't put the thing down since. She loves it and shows it off to everyone. Everyone we have shown it to wants one. It's not a perfect device but it is a long way from being a crappy device. I would happily recommend this device.
just ordered mine off Amazon for $99
sounds like a good buy to me, even if the Station turns out to be crap

Time to replace old Galaxy Player... Anything new out?

My daughter has a Galaxy Player 4.2 and loves it. Problem is it is starting to show it's age and starting to have problems. I have done a factory reset / wipe.
I am looking to see what is new that is out there similar to the old Galaxy Players. I'm not getting her a cell phone, so trying to stick with an Android media player for her. She does e-mails, music, movies, and games mainly.
I really don't want to move her over to a Ipod touch as everyone else in the house runs Android.
I've looked around, but couldn't find really anything like the old Galaxy Players.
Is there anything "newer" out there for android?
I had the 5.0 and have only just moved it on. It was superb. There is a dual core Korean version of the player but I could not find any comparable media only players. Have a cheap 5" phone now with mobile turned off
Nope. I think media players like the galaxy player are dying. Best thing to do is use an old android phone as a media player. Just put it on airplane mode(to turn off mobile completely) and turn WiFi back on. I use many of my old phones are WiFi only devices.

I replaced my 5.0 with a Fiio X5 for my music listening. The other major use for my 5.0 was my oldest kid used it to play games, and for that I gave him a recently retired phone minus sim card. I spent some time looking for a new product like the old 5.0, the market just does not seem to exist.
There are some but they are quite expensive. You're better off getting a pre paid smartphone (like the LG Volt) and not turning on the service.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using XDA Free mobile app
As mentioned, your best bet is probably to get a budget unlocked smartphone and simply not purchase a cell phone plan since they require a SIM card to be inserted. It may even get the added benefit that 911 can be dialed.
Moto G (2nd Gen.) is one of the newest of Motorola's line and is the most similar I've found to the Galaxy Player. It's a very familiar $180 with decent processing power. However, the display is much larger at 5.0" from 4.2", so if that's a dealbreaker, you can consider the first generation model that is a closer 4.5", but at the cost of a micro SD expansion slot for increasing storage and other familiar features like front-facing speakers. Unlike the Galaxy Player, there are no hardware or capactitive buttons, meaning they will be on-screen (related: cheaper Moto E and flagship Moto X)
Blu Vivo Air is an extremely recent product. It's $200 with excellent design and a very pleasing 5.1mm thickness, but at the cost of mediocre processing power and display quality and a lack of a micro SD slot. As with most phone alternatives, the screen is a larger 4.8". Capacitive buttons are in a similar format. (related: other Blu products)
OnePlus One is also worth mentioning. It's much pricier at $300 or $350, but for that price offers well outside of its league with only slightly outdated top-of-the-line processing power, very good design, a 1080p 5.5" screen, one of the best battery life, optional capacitive buttons, and a custom Android ROM (Cyanogen or otherwise). It lacks a micro SD slot and requires you to obtain an invite before purchasing (which should not take much effort or time if you decide to purchase it). A follow-up OnePlus 2/Two is slated for later this year, though early reports place it at a much higher price range of around $435, though improved specs, design, and perhaps other desired features will be rolled in. (related: Nexus 5)
There are others that I haven't included, since these three seem to offer a relatively similar package as the Galaxy Player did with their own strengths in processing capability, hardware features, design, and price. If anyone has any other modern alternatives that they like, I'd be interested to hear about it. Hopefully that helps; I'm interested in this side of the side of the market for PMPs as well. But right now, unlocked cell phones may be the better substitute.

You can get the first gen moto g with an SD Card slot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh0vlSVLsDs&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Also I think we should wait to see what the Zenfone 2 brings. As it stands it is better than the One Plus One.

Thanks! I wasn't aware of this. That's a really big move by ASUS, though I suppose it's not surprising with their general growth in the mobile market. $199 for the base model (1.8GHz/2GB over 2.3GHz/4GB I assume) of such a premium product is exceptional.
The possibility of a smaller and possibly even cheaper 5.0-inch model alongside the 5.5-inch one also seems great. I'm not especially partial to the design or placement of the headphone jack, but I guess that's all I really have to complain about on paper.
Maybe the 5.0 version? I don't think there are any android media players anymore. Best they got are the iPods.

I feel like premium phones should be priced between 200 and 300 dollars since we upgrade them yearly. For now premium is 500 dollars plus. I feel that that's a ripoff.

The problem is most people choose to upgrade them yearly. Seriously, a phone from 2012/2013 is more than capable of providing a good experience. I'm glad we are seeing the rise of $150-$200 unlocked phones that are great for the price since they show that you don't need a $500+.

I just want something that's just like the galaxy player, with wifi only no 3 or 4G. Because I just don't want to pay monthly just to enjoy a phone.

You don't have to turn on the service. For instance, my sister got an LG Volt for $80 and she just used it on WiFi with airplane mode enabled until she decided to turn on her service. I'm doing the same with this T989 too.

Thank you sir for notifying me about this. What do you guys think I should save up to get. I want something that has a 5 inch display running android kitkat that's not so expensive. But no touchwiz, it's bad enough that I have to deal with it on my galaxytab4 7.0

So the moto g huh.... maybe I'll look into that device. Do you have any other devices you recommend for me

I picked up a Lenovo a850 for around £40 GBP. Nice big 5.5" screen, dual sim if required, similar resolution to the Galaxy if not better. Really like it, although speakers are no where near as good
Ok I'm looked into that device and it was ok. You guys have anything else that you recommend.
