Warranty Exchange - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have to do a warranty exchange and wondering what the best way to send the phone back to TMobile. I know I can Odin to JFD and wipe the internal, but was looking to able to send it back with 2.2 on it, not 2.1, and can't seem to find a stock 2.2. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

why send it in with 2.2? Most people that have this phone are still stuck on 2.1

Odin to 2.1 then install kies mini to update to official froyo. Thats what i did to cover my tracks [and again this wknd]

when you guys send these phones back, are you paying the 150 deductible? or are you doing a free replacement if you send the damaged one back? Read in another post one guy sent his vibrant back via warr... and got a SGS 4g as a replacement..
Also, I don't think you want to send it back 2.2...most people that did the kies 2.2 update ended up with a bricked phone, and I don't believe there was ever an OTA 2.2 update...so I would def stick with sending it back 2.1 / no root and YES wipe your SD ...if they see app settings folders for Setcpu/root explorer or any other root only app...you are FU***D.

I dont even think they check sometimes. I sent them a vibrant that was on Axura at the time because the usb plug was effed up. I wouldn't advise sending it in like that but nothing I could of done guess I was just lucky

Thanks for your answers guys and the answer is it's going back with 2.1 because the new one came in with 2.1 on it. i was a little surprised that it still comes with 2.1.

Ive sent back many phones with root/ custom roms. Im on my 9th vibrant so far

There is a chance that they would notice, but if it's simply the trackball that's problematic, I doubt they'll go into your system info that much.
Option A.) Downgrade and don't risk it (your getting a new phone most likely anyway if it is truly broken.
Option B.) Take the new weather/clock widget and other stuff that is obviously from 2.1 off your home screen(s), and try to use the ones that look like they are from 1.5. That would be enough to trick a random person who doesn't have any experience with an eris I would think...
I would recommend calling customer support. They don't ask that many questions. Just, if its rooted, restore to 1.5 using jcase's method.
thanks alot so its possable to downgrade without needing my trackball to go down?? lmao
hmm... does anyone know if this is a problem with 2.1 in general? I'm still on 2.1leak (dont want to upgrade to anything else in fear that leak will be able to root before whatever i upgrade to) and my ball wont go down.
I was going to go into verizon tomorrow to get it replaced so i could go root instead... but if anyone thinks that's a bad idea let me know.
ur track ball won't go down either?

yep, I just went to the verizon store, a new unit is being sent to me in a couple days.
but, back on topic. I'm fairly certain 2.1 voided the warranty over the air. When i went to go in to get a replacement unit, they couldn't figure out why my phone was out of warranty when i just got it back in november/december.
Is there anyway that updating to 2.1 verizon pinged the phone or the phone pinged verizon and they marked it out of warranty?
the representatives there just did some work around in the computer to give me my warranty, thankfully they weren't too smart to look at the firmware number (it was locked even if they tried).
(one representative just had a can of compressed air blowing directly on the trackball for like 2 minutes... i couldn't believe he even tried that :/ )
think ill be ok if I don't go back to stock 1.5? reply ASAP in leaving in an hour

Of course you'll be fine, think about how much money they get from your account with this type of phone, they dont want to loose you as a customer...
thanks on my way now... ill repost when (if) I get my new Eris

ok I went to Verizon and I showed the guy my broken phones trackball. nothing else is wrong it goes down n everyting. he typed on the computer for a seccond n then he said ur new Eris will be delivered to ur house by Friday latest. so all he did was send an order out and I get a brand new out of the box Eris! and I keep my old one!!! can't get any better now I have 2 erises to play with with another 8th SD card!

Lucky.... now you have one you can brick
verizon doesn't make you send back your old phone? sweet! i'm getting a new one sent to me as well. I'll love having this extra one around to practice changing the trackball and development and stuff.
also, does the replacement unit still come with the 8gb sd card? that's a freaking deal right there.
I have received many (many!) replacements from big red and they have always required that I send the "bad" device back. You are given 10 days from the time you receive the replacement, then the old one goes back or you pay The only way you may be able to keep the old one is via insurance claim, not sure on this.
When you get a referb form VZW it will be bare bones device without battery, back cover, SD. Nothing but the phone (again insurance claim may be different).
otoh. I opened it when I got home... hope I don't have to send back
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Yes, you have 10 days to return your old device on a warranty claim, or you are charged the retail price of the phone.
question i have though... what happens when they get my old phone and see firstly a nexus one boot screen, and secondly, it's 2.1?
they probably won't care its too late

Question about VZW RUU and Unrooting

I need to send my wife's phone back to verizon. I need to unroot it and get it back to stock before I return it. Is running the Verizon RUU all I need to do to get the phone back to legit? I didn't know if that wipes out the bootloader and everything?
Any input is appreciated.

Yes, it replaces the bootloader, the radio (with a slightly older version than the 7/17 OTA), and the /system, /data, recovery, and boot partitions. You might find that after you do this it will immediately inform you that an update is available (the 7/17 OTA).
That should be sufficient. Highly, highly unlikely that VZW is going to put a crack team of computer forensic scientists "on the case" to investigate your phone. There have been folks who reported (either here or over on AF, I can't remember) that they had returned multiple rooted phones, without making any effort whatsoever to clean them up - and not a peep out of Big Red.

I'm getting a refurb phone because of a trackball issue. Ill be doing the ruu and ill let you know how it goes.

Thank you both for your input.
Her phone is the trackball too...I was really hoping they would come off a different model since this will be her third Eris. Maybe the inevitable next time

If it happens again I would start getting ugly with Verizon and say something like "if you guys can't send me an eris that will work properly then I want a different phone that works." Usually if you complain enough or threaten to go to a competitor they will do something for you.

I flashed the official 2.1 ruu and it flashed my phone to 100% stock. Bootloader, recovery, etc. Got the update notice for the Mr4 so I'm all good now.

Kies update to 2.2 bricked vibrant

So i had a Vibrant using 2.1 and i updated to 2.2 using kies mini. Phone went thru with the upgrade but never booted back. Phone will not turn on at all. Tried to push it into download mode but tht wont work either. Is there still a way to recover the phone?
p.s already went thru the FIX AND RESCUE YOUR VIBRICK Guide.
Did you try the taking battery, vol up down, plug usb then put back battery one? If yes and still a no go try a jig, you can get one from ebay or mobiletechvideos. If still a no go on that i guess just take it back to t-mo. Good luck.

This. If Kies Mini bricked it, then it will be fixed by using the download mode method he states, you shouldn't need a JIG.
I hope Odin picks it up! Tmo wont honor the warranty as i bought the phone from a 3rd party..I already tried tht.
The Jig didnt work for me! Since i bought this phone from craigslist Tmobile said they cant give me a replacement since the warranty is not under my name? Is there anyway i could go thru Samsung to get a replacement? Or will they require some sort of documentation in the form of a sales receipt? Can someone who has gotten a replacement thru Samsung help me please. Any help will be appreciated
Find a local repair shop and if they have a jtag and the proper software/firmware they should be able to bring it back to life in the event the boot loader was damaged. Again, depends on what the problem is, if it's fried........ sorry!

Check out the Odin part. It will help you flash back to 2.1. You can try updating again with clean 2.1. I messed up updating to 2.2 once, so I used Odin to go back to 2.1 and re-update.
Only if the phone powered on could i use Odin...
Long-time reader, first time post..
Same thing happened to me. T-mobile replaced it. Luckily I had wiped it clean and was unrooted before I updated.
I replaced it through samsung, as long as you didn't root it then you should be ok, or as long as it is on stock without root. Just tell them that your calling to see if you have warranty. Then they will ask you what your imei number, which is located on the back. Then read it to them and they will tell you if it has warranty or not. To convince them to take it in, just make up something. Don't tell them that you dropped it or something, just tell them that it won't turn on and that you don't know why or something, hope this helps.

Talk to Samsung support. You don't have to make up a story since it happened while upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 through Kies. Tell them that and you should be covered.

[Q] Totally Bricked Vibrant what now?

The story goes...
I was running CM9, accidentally installed a cm7 nightly, soft bricked in bootloop. re flashed rom to 2.1 through Odin and all was fine. One click rooted the phone again all was fine. With going back to CM9 in mind, I needed to upgrade to 2.2. Did Through Kies which seemed to go O.K. (said was successful) but never rebooted. Now I am fully bricked. Phone won't respond to power button or even go into download with a jig or the remove batt, sd, simm method.
What Now????
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave
Sorry Dave but it looks like you are out of luck. Kies is notorious for hardbricking devices.
You have no power at all? I would contact Samsung and tell them you hardbricked your phone using their software. Heard before that they will replace it.
I was afraid of that. I will notify Samsung.
Anyone need a Vibrant for parts at a good price out there?
Sorry to hear that. Jtag is what you need. Google mobiletechvideos.com and they can do it for you for 40 quids. You'll have tort phone back within a week.

Been there man and it sucks, but i send my phone to mobiletechvideos.com and they fixed my phone and put in stock 2.1. So if you really love your phone send it, trust me there's no other good feeling that seeing your vibrant boot up again XD

Wow, what are the odds there are two bricks from kies in a matter of days .... I am in exactly the same situation as you.

Phone back from Samsung--Yeah!!!
I sent the phone to Samsung and they had to replace the main board ($70). So now I am back to stock Froyo. I can't believe how much bloatware is on this thing. Before I attempt a root and such, I would like to understand the best procedure to getting back to 2.2 fully stock, in case I have to send it back. The Sticky AIO Vibrant toolbox seemed like a good idea, but it's directed to a bad link (Internet against Hollywood) when I click the skip add button. Will this be fixed, or is there a better way to go about this using Odin.
Thanks,
Dave
if u have seen Odin guide for vibrant then u wouldn't have done this .......whenever u Odin back to stock never use kies that's like opposite to Odin .......

Cant return warranty phone!!! HELP!

So I rooted and flashed my vibrant about 2 years ago. My charging port has malfunctioned and had to order a warranty replacement, but Im afraid I will send it back and they will void the warranty because it is rooted and charge me $400 to my tmobile account. So basically because the charge port no longer works I can not hook it up to usb and odin it back to stop. Any ideas?
Fixing that port isn't that hard......I've heard. Are you getting a replacement or are they fixing yours?
IMO, it shouldn't be an issue as the problem has nothing to do with firmware etc.
I am Jack's smirking revenge.
you're supposed to odin and go to stock firmware before sending it back for warranty purposes...
If the phone is 2 years old I won't worry. I return 7 Samsung galaxy back to AT&T with know problem in one year including the Repair station here in Phoenix. If you fell you have to try using WIFI to down load Rom and load threw bootloader
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
So your saying, since its not a software issue to go ahead and send it back? I have tried everything to odin but without the charge port I can not do anything with it. Also, like I said, they replaced my phone already and I am sending the broke one back. Im just afraid they will receive it and then hit me with a bill.
Cant they fix the port and then return to factory themselves after they repair the problem?
Yeah they will probably replace the whole board as well. You'll be fine.
I am Jack's smirking revenge.
Ok,thanx man. Ill send it back monday. Ill hop back on here in a couple weeks and let you know if they excepted it or not.
I think there's an app called mobile Odin. Might help in your case.
I would say they probably outsource the repair and they are happy for the work no mater how they got it and don't want to waste time figuring it out anyway.
Just say'in
