What is the point of a flash tool if you can just flash everything with xrecovery

I don't believe you can flash basebands using xrecovery. But I could be wrong there.

Its personal preference
some poeple may not want a ton of folders on the sd card, and prefer to do it on pc where storage is better
There are many reasons. First, they use different types of files. The Flash Tool uses sin files to flash Sony Ericsson firmware, where xRecovery uses zip files to flash custom ROMs while still using the stock kernel and baseband. Second, you can still use the Flash Tool when your phone is bricked, or you can't access xRecovery. You can also use the Flash Tool to rebrand.
Thank you very very very much. All of u.

This is for people who wanna go from Stock GB and based ROM's to Old Baseband ROMs (mik's CM7, Andy's Phoenix, Froyo, etc).
For the vice Versa, just flash the Old BaseBand Back.
If you don't have a Recovery yet
Install ROM manager and Install CWM Recovery, the Latest one will will be installed as u update it, atm the latest one is 5.x
Reboot into recovery and then make a Nandroid Backup. Now if u do anything wrong bla bla u can just restore your backup :_D [You Have not Flashed Baseband yet and don't do it yet!]
Now download your Fav ROM whatever it is, and Put it on your SD card, keep it outside as it will be easier to find. and ofc don't forget to Backup your Contacts and whatever you might need.
Now you are ready to Test the New ROM.
Reboot Into Recovery and wipe
Cache
Dalvik
Battery Stats
do a WIpe/Data/factory Reset
and finally goto mounts and Storage-> Format System
now come back and Say Install Zip from SDCARD
Choose the Zip
IT will do the update and say Process Complete
now Reboot Your Phone.
Your Phone Will Boot into your New ROM.
BUT: if its a Old Baseband Based ROM, you will not get GSM/Data Working don't Panic/Worry
Test the ROM, See the Features Check out the Camera/Wifi/Tether and all the possible things you expected to see and work.
If you are Satisfied with it now u can get ready to Flash the Old Baseband, if you are not Satisfied Reboot into Recovery and Restore your Backup.
--FLASHING OLD BASEBAND---
WARNING: 1'ce you do this (flash Old Baseband) Even u Restore your Nandroid Backup you wont get ur GSM/DATA back you will have to Flash the New Baseband if u wanna get your Stock GB working(New Baseband ROMS). so Proceed only if you are sure of Keeping the New ROM :-D (Old Baseband ROM you just Installed/Tested)
Keep the Tools Ready: 1. the LGMDP-v1.5.exe utility! and 2. the v10 Baseband
Enable USB Debugging on your Phone
Connect your Phone yo your Computer via USB and goto Device manager and Disable the LG Virtual Modem
open LGMDP-v1.5.exe
Select Port : Choose your Phone and Click on Connect
Under the IMAGE folder choose the Location where you Unzipped the Baseband (v10 is Old v20 is New)
u'l get 2 Errors Ignore that Close the Window and Click on Download
the Process will take around 5 mins.
now Dont Do Anything to Your Phone/
Go Grab a Cup of Coffee or Walk your Dog, anything waste those 5mins and come back :-D
You will get a Confirmation that the Process is Complete
Switch On Phone if Its Not Started
If Everything Went Correct you Will Have GSM working on your Phone
for Data Connectivity Please Input Your Settings Like Access Point Bla bla in the Network Setup
--------------
Now!: if you dont wanna stay on the Old Baseband ROM you can go Back to the New Baseband ROMS ofc just follow the Baseband Instructions Above and Instead of Choosing the v10 Image Choose the v20 Image
do that and u'l be On the NEw Baseband :-D
-------------
Conclusion: You Can Flash BaseBand first and then ROM or ROM first and then Baseband
Hope i Helped :-D

I have a week trying to install a new ROM to my phone (xperia mini pro). I follow the instructions, install the recommended kernel for each Rom. When i finish installing the ROM i reboot the phone put the kernel logo and don't do anything else (the last time i let it in the kernel logo for 10 hours and it didn't work).
I fix it using Wotan server. But what i really care about is that i want to prove new Rom, so if someone can help me i will be really thankful.
PS: Sorry if you think my english is bad, is because my main language is not english

Hello,
I'm having the same problem, I don't get it at all. I bought my Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i) yesterday and so far I have been only able to flash stock rom and MiniCMSandwich AOSP Android 4.0.4 RC3, both of which work fine.
With all other roms I get stuck on the logo (depending on kernel - Sony, Sony Ericsson or Free Xperia logo). I do full wipe, dalvik cache etc. but nothing helps.
So far I tried: FXP 117 7.2.0, FXP 117 9.0.0 and XROM™ ICS RC7.
I tried different basebands, flashing in different order etc., no matter what I get stuck on the logo.
Could someone post a detailed step-by-step instruction how to flash either FXP or the XROM on the Mini Pro? Which baseband should I use (and how do I know it's the baseband's fault when the rom doesn't work), what about Wi-Fi etc.
I flashed Galaxy S+ (I9001) before and didn't have any of these issues.

I do exactly as it says. I had to flash stock rom before that, because update zip wouldn't work if I started from AOSP (or if I wanted to apply it after flashing FXP)
BTW, do I really have to flash stock ftf (kernel+baseband), which overwrites my CWM each time I want to flash FXP? I hate losing CWM.
Anyway, I did this:
1. I put the update.zip on the sdcard
2. I flashed the boot.img I unpacked from the update.zip using fastboot (went fine)
3. I applied update.zip using CWM
4. I did factory reset from CWM and wiped dalvik cache
After reboot - it hangs on the Free Xperia logo. I also tried flashing Rage kernel 2.8 with the same result. Oh, and does it matter if I flash kernel before or after the rom?

rage kernel is not compatible with cm7,

That's because for some stupid reason you formatted the system partition, which must not be done on some ROM installations.
The CM7 installation requires info from the system folder, but since you formatted it, you don't have the info on your phone and installation cannot be installed.
Reinstall stock firmware, follow the same procedure, but do NOT format system, but do make factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Well, I was asked to try formatting /system.
Ok, again then. BTW, is there a pre-rooted .62 stock rom somewhere? I only see .69, which isn't good AFAIK.
Hello one and all....I'm in a deep problem.. Required urgent reply.I had rooted my phone successfully with flashtool and also installed ics stock rom on it.I usually dont install any mods or roms.. but I saw real ics and installed it.but it had not responded in the page where it asked details aboutt wipe data and others..but it only responds to the buttons back and next i pressed next and it had installed rom succesfully. Then cwm rebooted and then I had strucked on sony logo...I tried many times but no use..It cant also open cwm recovery....
Real ICS (full) is unlocked BL specific i think; you have to flash original firmware i guess, use PC companion to repair.
Can you enter flashmode? If you can then just re-flash it with Stock ICS Firmware,Oh did you install a costum kernel before Flashing real ICS? Most CosROM requires a costum Kernel installed
Sent from my Xperia Mini using XDA Premium
Go back to stock ROM, and root your phone again. Then unlock your bootloader and try flashing a custom kernel (I'd recommend KRsH Kernel). In CWM, do a factory reset and wipe everything (dalvik-cache, battery stats, EVERYTHING). Proceed to flashing the Real ICS ROM (choose "install zip from sdcard", not "apply update").

One more thing - the first boot takes quite a while (it took me about 5 minutes or so). I'm also running Real ICS.

You can install a Xperia S based rom, like Real ICS, or install mods like Xperia S Launcher
Try these steps:
1. DOWNGRADE to GB .58 firmware using FLASHTOOL
2. ROOT your phone, and install a ROOT SHELL
3. Use FLASHTOOL to update to ICS 4.0.4 (DO NOT wipe user data)
4. ROOT your phone
5. UNLOCK your BOOTLOADER
6. FLASH a CUSTOM KERNEL (KRsH KERNEL is recommended for Real ICS)
7. Enter CWM
8. In CWM, do a FACTORY RESET, WIPE CACHE PARTITIONS, WIPE DALVIK CACHE and WIPE BATTERY STATS (DALKVIK CACHE and BATTERY STATS are found in ADVANCED)
9. Choose INSTALL.ZIP FROM SD CARD and choose the Real ICS zip file
Seriously, the first boot is ridiculously long. 3 minutes may not be enough. Try waiting for 10 or 15 minutes.
Right, I have a rooted Xperia Sola and I want to flash the eXperience ROM, and I don't know how to do that.
The problem is that I can't understand most of the instructions of flashing the ROM, so you guys can help me, please?
Ok, here it goes...
Flash any Stock .54 FTF (use flashtool). Ok, got it...
Let it boot properly. Ok, got it...
Download eXperience.zip and transfer to internal memory. Right.
Flash boot.img from Munjenis v5 CWM kernel.zip (use flashtool). Ok, I can do that...
Now boot to CWM recovery. CWM? WTF?
Flash the eXperience.zip via CWM. What?
You will be entered in AROMA Uh?

CWM stands for Clockwork Mod recovery. You need a recovery installed to install any roms or mods....
CWM is a recovery where you could perform several operations like accessing the system files, system partitions etc, for us and as of now it is needed to install custom ROMs.
So as the first step says, you need to flash .54 version of ICS (ftf file) by flashmode (volume down key and plug in USB at the same time, led will light up green) you need to install flashtools (flashing is done by flash tools) in your pc first
Then there is kernel, that is basically the bridge or interface between the phones hardware and ROM, kernel decides the hardware limits and accessibility to the ROM,
In order to replace stock sony kernels you need an unlocked boot loader (boot loader is locked default by Sony) there are few steps to unlock the boot loader, once you do that you can flash custom kernels (kernel files are like "boot.img" .elf files etc)
To flash them you need to enter fast boot mode ( volume up key and plug in USB, led will light up blue) or there will be flash able zip version which can be flashed by CWM (again recovery, which can be accessed by repeated pressing of volume down at the booting Sony logo), custom kernels have pre installed CWM.
After kernal that is boot.img switch on, on Sony logo press repeatedly volume down lets you enter CWM, you have to perform some wipes, that is data (factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache) after that choose "install zip from SD card" install the ROM.zip file, (assuming you have already put the ROM.zip in your sdcard, ROM = name of the ROM here it is experiencev2) you are done after the installation is complete, reboot and you enter AROMA, its an installer again, follow on screen instructions.
And you have that ROM.

If you don't read the Guides listed in the General Section, then u won't be able to do stuffs that you want.
Reading helps a lot rather than asking questions.
What i meant, if u read the guides you will get the answers more quickly.

Do I really need SD Card for flashing a custom ROM?
and gazedCon
Hi,
better to get one do', not expensive and useful loll or buy an xperia P then u don t need an sd card...
When u gonna flash there will be an option select zip from sd card in CWM; or u flash rom with flashtool with the ftf file of your rom, its up to you, or its gonna be actually up to the file you gonna download.
I read a lot before flashing a rom! you better to read some more before doing it, just an advice!
First flash for me a week ago and today im on xperia P
nemesis 5.1 kernel enigma rom 4.4 cwm 6.0.1.2 and bootloadder unlocked be sure i spend hours in front of that screen
take it easy

Yeah, the ROM.zip file to flash has to be either in the media internal storage or SD card (copy it before flashing the kernel) only then CWM recovery can access the package for installation.

Once again mate, what you want is to flash a custom ROM.
download the ROM, it may consist of the kernel file “boot.img” inside the ROM.zip or separate links would be there for the kernel.
[These custom kernels have CWM preinstalled]
so here it goes
1. could be as you said, flash .54 ICS firmware, hope you know that.
2. Switch on the device, let it boot. Copy the ROM.zip file in the SD card or internal storage.
3. Switch off, enter fastboot mode (assuming you have an unlocked bootloader)
3. Download the above said kernel, if its in boot.img, use flashtools in fastboot mode (fastboot mode>select kernel to flash) to flash the kernel (so after kernel flashing you have the kernel installed with CWM in it)
4. Switch on, on seeing sony logo, repeatedly press the volume down key, you enter CWM.
5. Perform wipes (for clearing or deleting user data /cache to make it a clean install)
-wipe data
-wipe cache
-advanced>wipe dalvikcache
6. Now on the main menu find “install zip file” access the location where you have stored the ROM.zip file, whether in internal storage or external SD card.
7. Click install, done !
8. Again wipe data and wipe cache
9. Reboot, let it boot
you have new ROM.
try reading more tutorials in the general section if this didnt help you.

Lmao you re right!
Manudo you really need to read some more tutorials before flashing if you don t understand what you doing that gonna become dangerous for your mobile...
and actually hope you know that the bootloader once unlocked void your warranty... don t mess it up with flashes, read a week more then flash a custom rom!
Anyways we are here if something goes wrong
Sorry for being a noob, but I understand, finally...
The boot.ini file is always at the root directory of the zip file, right?
Sent from my MT27i using xda app-developers app
Nope that boot.img or kernel.elf or kernel.sin has to be at the root of the sd card that means in no any folders u drag it n drop it directly on the name of
the drive in windows. Then u flash but before doing it u have to put the rom.zip at the sd card root too...
Got it?

Yeah, but... The CWM part, I read that it's necessary to have the unlocked bootloader to flash the CWM Kernel, I tried but flashtool gave me an error that says that I don't have root access. At the beginning the log says "Root Access Allowed", I can't understand...
Thank you in advance.

Ok
Kernel and cwm its two different things clockwork recovery mode its like a small soft that gonna be useful for you to set up the kernel. The first thing to load on the mobile its the bootloader then kernel then firmware (rom)
A rom that u gonna flash HAS to be compatible with kernel u want to flash
If you want to get your rom rooted i don t think (unless theres a way to do it on ure phone) you can do it with flashtool most of the time you have to downgrade to an older version of your rom cuz root is voluntary blocked by sony to deny u access to it but developpers found weakness in systems but it takes time and sony by updating systems find those weaknesses and fix it.
Then i m not sure u have to get unlocked bootloader to enter flash mode but once again to do it void warranty and to unlock it permit u to flash a custom kernel
So at the end....what u wanted to do? Flash a custom rom?
then if its yes
FIRST OF ALL You unlock bootloader, then put a custom kernel, then a custom rom and for this u look below mrmbk told u how to do it
sent with my perfexperia P using tapatalktak
Right, I have to unlock it...
But, I have that fear to brick the phone, you know?
