Hallo everybody,
I'm experiencing the following problem with my flyer:
when I try to open a word doc with Polaris (on which I previously took some notes on, using Polaris as well) I receive the following message:
-not enough memory to extract the file-
and the program doesn't let me open the file. If I send the same document to my notebook (without opening it), I am able to open it with office it and see the notes on it.
It doesn't happen with all the docs but only with some of them.
This problem is very annoying from a practical point of view, especially when working on long docs in different moments.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?
Bye all.
Max
Yes, I can suggest you that you must free some memory before opening polaris. I have this problem before s-off, and now with s-off and flyhigh rom, I can scribe more than 10 pages without problem. Insufficient memory makes scribbling with notes lag also, and it is very annoying problem.

How can I do to free some memory?
The only way I know is by using "task manager" and kill all the running applications; but even if I proceed in this way, it seems I still have not enough memory.
Task manager shows that my total memory is 805 MB and 500 is used.
Have you tried to restart the device? Restart, not turn off and turn on. I bumped to errors with the pen sometimes and the problem disappears when I restart the device.
I had the same issue but I don't remember which program gave me the problem. I remember, I had to flaten the document. It has to do with the pen creating to many layers or something like that.
What do you mean by "flaten" the document?

What you are describing is a bug in the Pdf software. I came upon it yesterday, myself, when marking up a Pdf document. If you save mid-way through a session, then try to save again, you will get an insufficient memory error, it doesn't matter how little you have added since the last save. But if you open the document again you can continue annotating and save your added markups. You just can't save more than once per session.
Flattening the document is not necessary. What flattening does is incorporate the markings into the Pdf itself, not as a separate file that is easy to undo.

I have a problem with my O2. In <setting>, <system>, <memory>, I see that the "memory in use" in "programs" side keeps increasing, while I never installed any programs. And "memory in use" in "storage" is OK (no increase). I already tried to use "remover" but there are some files (e.g. MSGQUEUE...) cannot be removed. Any solution? What's the problem?
I join in on this problem. I looked up files bigger than 64K, but the biggest one is CompatcFlashBAckuUpNew (28,7MB). I guess that's just my calender (about 1 or 2 appointments per day) and my Contacts (about 200, but only name and tel.nr.!). Can someone help us out? Where can we get a good manual, where things like memorymanagement for dummies is thouroughly explained? The manual on the pda itself is not enough to me!
Now let me try to give you some answers....

Storage is the memory on your device where all you´re additonal Software appears. Also your files like notes and all this. (when you don´t put it to a storage card.
Programs is the memory that you have free for running programs All running Programs need a little bit of memory, so that is why this side increases....
Just go two taps in front to see the chapter Running Programs. Close them you didn´t use actualy and you will get more free memory....

This is like the name shows a Backup from your Data in the file system. I´m sure you picked up at least one time the program SDbackup. I´m also sure, that this File is on your Storage Card...

LumpiStefan,
Thanks for the fast reply.
1. You are probably right on the point that the CompactFlashBackUpNew is on the sdcard (wiht sdbackup). Doing 'find' files larger than 64KB it only lists files with a little icon of a red box in a little white box beneath it - that probably means that it's on de sdcard. So that shouldn't be the problem. Thanks.
2. There is no additional software installed. When I stop all running programs on the 'Running Program List', I have a total main memory of 31.21MB. Free storage memory = 0.93MB and Free program Memory = 1.21MB. The only removable program is the keyboard driver.
greetings,
Lionel
Don´t know where this came from.....
Probably you´re syncing your emails with your PC and also syncing the attachements. This may be an possibility why your Memory is so low. Have you tried to save the attachements to the storage Card?
I´m using my xda for a while now, haveing also about 200 Contacts and installed the Tomtom-Software. My totaly free memory is about 17 MB...
Regards
Stefan
Many thanks Stefan,
I can now be sure that something is wrong with the memory. I've been wondering about this for a few months now. I have no more mail synched with my xda and before the attachments were indeed saved to storage card. I'll just do a hard reset and start all over again.
greetings,
Lionel
Thanks Stefan,
I managed to fix my problem, but if I explore the content of files, I can see big files which I don't know how to erase??? (e.g. MSGQUEUEDATA/MICROSOFT/...) Any solution?
this is something i've been noticing for a while. After i get a phone call or 2 the system memory starts getting more and more used up and oxios can't bring it down to as low before the phone calls. I've seen this happen on all the roms and with dotfreds task manager the phone application is running three times. I can't close any of them. I was wondering if there was fix for this or does it have to be like this ?
I have also noticed this. Something I found that gets the memory back is to open pie and goto a site that uses lots of resources,If I goto torquereport.com and browse around a little when I shut the browser down it has reclaimed a lot of the ram that I was unable to get back. Maybe there is a better way to reclaim it but I havent found it yet. I use oxios and memmaid.
Any programs installed. I found that as nice as it is, HTC Home eats up memory over the course of a day. The Titan has a well known memory leak problem. It can be somewhat circumvented, but you have to watch what programs you use.
Search on htis, there are dozens of threads about this on various forums, here, ppcgeeks.org, etc etc.
Furthermore why is this in the upgrading forum?
Today I (supposedly) disabled lowmemorykiller by putting zero in minfree and adj files. I already have swap partition set up (size 1 GB) in a class 10 SDHC card.
Then I proceeded to open all the apps that I have installed and set them in a different state from default (like opening its settings, opening a file in case of officesuite etc).
These things happened:
1. After a max limit, older apps started to vanish from task manager to make space for newer apps
2. used swap space did not exceed 122 MB
3. when I tried to return to very old apps, some of them retained their last state giving an illusion of multitasking but a text message I was typing disappeared, did not even get saved as draft. ALL web browsers were killed. Some reloaded pages from internet, Opera Mini and Easy Browser failed to save last state (they always fail, so does Adobe Reader) so they were back to home screen with all opened tabs lost.
4. After an incoming call, when I returned to all the apps a second time, I found that all but the lightest of apps had lost their last states.
After setting minfree to zero and enabling swap with 60 swappiness Android is still killing apps without my permission.
<rant> I usually have less than 10 apps open and some of them can be memory intensive. Multitasking is better than default now, but still kinda random. I can't ever be sure that if I open this document now, I won't find my previous 20 minutes of research session lost upon returning to browser (history is messy for retrieving long sessions and very short in case of Opera Mini. Even Chrome browser sometimes crashes and gets reset not to mention always reloading all pages while Android Browser in ICS only renders crashes. My data limit is 3 GB/month). The three major handheld OS right now are Android, iOS, WM7 so don't tell me to stop whining and change OS; there is nowhere to go. At least Android is open source and there is a chance of someone legally implementing proper (like in PC) multitasking in it except multiple instances of same app which will probably be a little too much to ask for from a community but seeing that browsing the web is my main concern and all browsers already support multiple tabs, it will not be a deal-breaker for me</rant>
So my question is, how do I stop this T1000 Ninja Edition? Throw it into the chasm of Mount Doom?
On a serious note, any help will be appreciated. If you can't solve it but know what is killing my app sessions, please explain that.
SO I have come to the conclusion that ICS's maximum limit of Background apps is 18. As long as the app is not older than 19, it should be visible in task manager and should be in memory. I have set swappiness to 100 and use of swap memory increased to 221220. I'll put further pressure on it to see how it behaves when lots of tabs are open but I am afraid that 100 swappiness will make the device crash if too many tabs are open. It has already started to suddenly reboot time to time.
Edit:
It does not work that way. Android seems to really have its own will in this matter. There is no rule found by me so far that can predict when an app will be unloaded from memory. It seems time plays a role too.
At least iOS and WP7 clearly state that they do not support multitask. Google is the worst of all.
Edit:
Chrome Browser is not loading the pages from internet upon being recalled from task manager. It is loading the pages from swap but looks just like loading over 3G. Any changes in the actual pages are not being reflected until I manually hit reload. Not sure if other browsers will follow suit.
I have an HTC Sensation running CM10. The very day I installed the CM10 ROM this problem started, I get an error saying " Storage space running out. Some functions may not work". I can clear the data and everything works fine until the next time it happens. Some days it happens 2 or 3 times a day. As far as I can tell, this is not a common problem.
The only thing I can think is that it may have something to do with my BackCountry Navigator app. It has lots of aerial photographs. I suspect that it is trying to catalog them all. But, 700MB seems excessive. I have been trying to locate this large file or files to see analyze the data, but I'm not sure where they are located.
Anyone willing to help me tackle this problem?

If you figure the average picture is approximately 1MB in size, and ariel photographs are usually very detailed most likey 2MB (Or greater in some cases) it's not unrealistic for 350-700+ pictures to be cached by the app as you use it to navigate and view maps. Even navigating a small area with that level of detailed images will occur a large size cache quickly, which is likely why it sometimes fills up 2-3 times a day. I would recommend going into system settings, then application manager, and locating BackCountry Navigator then clear the apps cache. Also check the apps settings and see if it has any options for disabling image caching or limiting the cache size.

OK I cleared the cache which was less than 1MB. I also turned off caching. Cross your fingers.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. If I could find the actual file or files that were using up the remaining 706MB of my phone, I might be able to figure out what was going wrong.

Try using root explorer or a similar root enabled file browser to go to the application data folder then look for the BackCountry Navigator app's data folder and see what files you can find, you may find some hints as to why the application is using so much storage space.
Did you ever get this sorted out? I have the same problem. Sold my last phone due to this problem. It definitely has something to do with BCN. Is there a way to tell the phone not to catalog that folder?
BTW I'm running it on an S3.
I'm having the same issue on my EVO LTE, running Viper ROM so it happens on Sense too. Either I get a notification to move apps because I'm out of space, or I'll get an install error when trying to update apps. It's always Media Storage is huge, I can clear it but then sometimes my Music Files don't get recognized by players even though I can see them in a file explorer. Very frustrating.

I saw the same thing as your 'Disk Usage' thumbnail above, except the path was "Storage card -> Apps -> Media Storage -> Data", and it was using 3GB (out of 5.8GB total internal capacity available to end-users). Clicking on 'Media Storage' and clicking 'Show' brought me to the 'Amazon Fire Media Storage' app (a system app, the logo being 'Fire' in a red square).
After clearing all the 'Media Storage' app data, it got regenerated to 3.7GB after a couple hours and filled up my internal storage again. I then deleted an ebook reader app that I remember installing a couple days ago, and it automatically shrunk to 300MB shortly afterwards without my manually clearing the 'Media Storage' app data. About an hour after that, though, it regenerated back to 3.7GB and filled up my storage again.
Anyone know what files are consulted to populate this Media Storage/Data file (i.e., video, audio, ebooks), what process/processes populate it, and what reads it? It would be really helpful to examine its contents to at least look for a rough idea on which apps are using it heavily, and/or honoring '.nomedia' to prevent scanning.
Device: Amazon Fire 7in KFFOWI, running rooted FireOS 5.1.1
Not sure if it is wrong, just would like to get some explanation of this. Phone has bit less than 1GB ram available for apps and default behavior of Androuid should be to use it all for caching recently run proceses, because there is no difference if memory is free or taken - it uses same power.
I have Viper ROM 1.06 and using Nik3r kernel, tested with and without dataswap mod (128MB). Even tried to tweak Viper settings for minfree setting, using Multitasking ultimate profile. And still the same behavior. When I check available memory, it always sits around 750 used out of 980MB. Regardless what and how many apps I run.
Problem is, that when phone is not used for some time I see almost every time apps starting instead of fast switching from memory. Its mainly visible for me on FBReader, which I use to read ebooks every time I have little spare time. I pull phone from pocket, start FBReader and voila, it is starting from scratch loading book. Its 2-3s, but still. its relatively small app, shouldnt be killed most of the time thanks to system policies on free ram.
When I try to play with phone and run as many apps (start FBReader, home and run Chrome+load 2 tabs, run Camera, run Viber, run Tapatalk and back to FBReader) to force it to close my FBreader from memory, everything works fine and it swaps back in immediately. Even though checking Apps tab in settings shows memory usage about 750-800/980, not fully stuffed with cached apps (think its not showing correct numbers? Or not showing memory taken by apps in empty state?). But anyway. I give up, turn off my phone and let it be for some time. Then I check for example for SMS and would like to continue reading my book. And FBReader is loading as if it was closed. Why?
Seems to me like phone does cleaning of cached stuff in memory after some time when it is not used? Cant say precise when it happens, it just annoys me to see that system shows all the time around 750/980MB used and still is unable to keep my app in memory for longer period when it works fine if I test it directly.
Any ideas/tips/explanation?
Hi, I have the same issue with the fb messenger (chat heads)
