When in bed at night I use my SGS2 as a DLNA server by hooking it up to my TV via the MHL cable and then streaming video from my PC (which is in another room). It's a bit of a pain though to constantly get up out of bed to change the program. My wife also has a SGS2 and I was wondering if there was any way that her device could be used as a remote for my device? Is this possible? Any help appreciated.

Get PlugPlayer from the Android Market. Install it on at least the SGS2 connected to the TV.
PlugPlayer is a complete DLNA solution - it does all three functions: Media server, Media renderer, and Media controller. Skifta and Samsung's AllShare don't implement all functions IIRC.
Here's the breakdown of what this all means:
Media server is the source of your content.
Media renderer is the device with a display/speaker where the media is played.
Media controller controls what media is played from the Media server to the Media renderer.
One device can do all three at the same time.
Here's our setup:
SGS2 connected to TV acting as media renderer - let's call it DMR.
SGS2 in your hand acting as remote/controller - let's call it DMC.
Media source, wherever it is; it may be DMR, DMC, or another DLNA server - let's call this DMS.
Open PlugPlayer on DMR and leave it running. On DMC, in AllShare, Skifta or PlugPlayer, select the DMS that is hosting the media file you want to play, then select the DMR where you want to output the media file. Then, all that's left to do is to select the media file you want to play.
I do this all the time at home. I use a Buffalo NAS as the DMS, a Logitech Revue running PlugPlayer as the DMR, and my SGS2 as the DMC.

I am about to purchase a NAS device to act as a home media server.
So far my short list includes:
Synology Disk Station DS210j
QNAP TS-210 Turbo NAS
Some of them support iTunes server and can stream music to an iPhone. Surely there is a way to do this on the Eris! Is there an iTunes client for Android 1.5 or perhaps a better way to do this?
Any help appreciated!
dont know anything about android, but my nas drive packed in and i got a new one from pc world. i thought it was a nas drive but wasnt it was a network media storage, my ameo couldnt pick it up at all because it wasnt a nas drive, pc seen it fine and could map. hope this is of some help. make sure its nas.
Not sure if your NAS device supports Upnp, but if it does like windowns 7 and can share media as Pictures Music and Videos, I found a program on the market that I could access the files on the computer over my network, the music would work but I couldn't get the videos to play. Search for UPNP on the market, I'll post the program later when the gf brings her phone around. There was a similar program on the Ipod touch, although it was able to play the video files, probably missing a codec in android.
The program was Andromote... if you have windows 7 set up sharing all the media on your nas you would be able to access it.

It's not exactly graceful, but I use MPD (Music Player Daemon), PMix (an Android client for MPD), and A Online Radio to stream my music collection to my Droid Eris (via Icecast). Unfortunately, the native Droid media player doesn't support the usual streaming protocols, but the above combo works. When I'm outside my home network, I use a web based client for MPD and have my Icecast port forwarded on my router. If the NAS device you pick up supports Linux, you should be able to install MPD and Icecast (both are available in most distros); the Market has both PMix and AOR for free.
The protocol iTunes uses for streaming audio is called DAAP, but I'm unaware of any DAAP clients on the Android platform yet. Searching google for "Android DAAP" led me to a site which offers a client application to control iTunes from Android, but not client. Again, if the NAS system runs Linux but doesn't provide a DAAP server, you can possibly install Firefly Media Server (formerly mt-daap) to mimic the fuctionality. However until there's a client, there is little point.

I Have an old phone which i want to use as a media player.
I tried to install a few VNC Servers for WM5, but that wasn't workable.
I Wonder if there is an application which i can run on my old phone, and then control the playing streams or MP3 files via a web-interface or something.
Something like VLC has, but there isn't a VLC for WM5 with an HTTP interface as far as i know.

You can try Pocket Player from Conduits (www.conduits.com). Their SW acts as UPNP Server or Agent, i.e. you can either stream SW from the device elsewhere or receive streams from other servers. I think that there were also programs to remote control WMP, but I have never used them.
You need to define for your purpose what shall be done where:
- control the playback
- Audio output
- media data
So you have taken some pictures and a movie on your new PRIME and you want to stream the slide show or show the movie via your HTPC (of course connected to your TV). You don't want to connect your PRIME to the TV via an HDMI cable. You don't want to physically upload the multi-media to your HTPC, just stream it.
So what app are you using on the PRIME?
What software are you using on your HTPC?
Is the connection WiFi or Bluetooth?
So who has done this and what is your solution?

The MirrorOp product line (software & hardware) from AWINDINC looks exactly what I want for WiFi projection from my PRIME to a HTPC. They support MAC's and PC's with their software.
Basically you need their sender software on your PRIME tablet and their receiver software on your PC. The MirrorOP Photo Sender is FREE and does not require ROOT. The MirrorOP Sender software cost $10, requires ROOT, can project video but NO audio. Also your PC must have WiFi or be on lan network that has Wifi. You also need to visit their website to get your PC or MAC software to be able to receive your video.
BubbleUPnP is going to take a little time to play with to see if it will work.
I am going to try the MirrorOP software this evening and report back tomorrow.

The MirrorOP Sender works GREAT. You get about 5 minutes FREE usage. If you want more then you must pay $10. NO AUDIO and about 20 FPS according to their test program.
The MirrorOP Photo Sender works and is FREE but there is a problem with colors so not recommended with the current release.
Both of these apps were tested from my ROOTED PRIME.
The PC Receiver program is FREE and works with both apps.
My quest was to find an app for the PRIME and software for my HTPC to stream video or pictures FROM the PRIME to the HTPC via WiFi. With your help I have found the software to do that job.
Now I am looking to add AUDIO to the upload from the PRIME to my HTPC for the perfect combination!
Any suggestions for that perfect combination would be appreciated.

Since you mention an HTPC as a client why not use DLNA/UPnP? Most pads have a DLNA server, ASUS adds for free MyNet, use that to share your media files with your HTPC client.
Just launch the media player on your HTPC (for sure it will support DLNA/UPnP) search for a server (the MyNet on your TP), browse for your media and .... play.
You might want to enable Digital Media Server under the settings of MyNet. I believe it's on by default, I have it always off.
The MirrorOP someone suggested you is basically a remote desktop server (needing a proprietary client) which replicates your local TP screen to your client. There are very few remote desktop solutions that support sound as well.
Use Skifta (free on android market).
It's an DLNA enabled player that let's you pick your DLNA source and render target.
Using the TF201 as the source and my HTPC (XBMC Eden Beta 3 / Win 7.. be sure to enable "Allow control of XBMC via UPNP" in Network Settings) as the target, I was able to stream over wifi.
Short movie clip I made from TF201's camera worked with both video and audio. I also was able to stream RIO.mkv from TF201 which surprised me. It's 1080p h.264 (encoded full profile at CQ19) mkv with 5.1 sound. I only watched about 4 minutes though.
I tried to bypass the HTPC and use my TV (Ethernet DLNA enabled Samsung LN46C750) as the DLNA target but playback wasn't smooth. It would play for 3-4 seconds, buffer, resume playing, buffer again, etc.,.. Going through HTPC worked much better.
Thanks for the post, as I had not thought to test Skifta this way. Normally, I just use it pick music on my NAS (10TB Synology 411J) for playback on the HTPC.
I think 2player and bubbleupnp(not free) should also work like skifta.. but I haven't tested them..

I am aware of several apps for my PRIME for DLNA server functions:
Skifta
UPnPlay which requires a 3rd party player for video.
BubbleUPnP
The questions is what is the best software for my Windows 7 PC to be a DLNA CLIENT?
I am not using XBMC but MediaPortal for my HTPC functions.
There is an XDA forum for BubbleUPnP - UPnP/DLNA Control Point and Renderer.
The BubbleUPnP Server site. BUBBLEUPNP SERVER IS NOT AN UPNP AV MEDIA SERVER. It requires at least one working UPnP AV Media Server (Windows Media Player, Twonky, Asset UPnP, ...) to do something useful.
I will try BubbleUPnP tonight.

I need some DLNA player to my phone and maybe DLNA server to Windows.
- What I want from a DLNA player to my phone: gets subtitles from server, and play avi/mkv/mp4 files, with subtitles.
- What I want from a DLNA server to Windows: stream avi/mkv/mp4+subs without needing to encode.
If possible, a explanation about CIFS, can it be useful to share my stuff and play on the phone with subtitles?
[To DLNA server I'm using Samsung PC Share Manager 4.2, I won't upgrade to AllShare, it's worse. And I use PC Share Manager with my Samsung TV, and it's working good]
And yes, I've tested a lot of servers and players, and no luck. The closest I got was BubbleUPnP+PC Share Manager, but it was without subtitles.

I have a network drive with my media library attached to the router (belkin 600 play). Also I have Xperia z tablet and dlna enabled Samsung TV. Router is not a dlna media server.
I need a player for android that can
1)see not just servers but all shares of the local network. (bs player can do this the way I would like to)
2) play all formats is "a must"
3) cast playback to TV (as a dlna server)
So as for now there are tons of players with different combinations of these features, but none combine them all. I wonder if bsplayer pro can play to TV, but not ready to pay 7$ to get Answer))))
