[Q] Different Radios and Battery life - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i am confused does Radio have significant impact on battery life ?
When i am froyo Bell 2.2.2 Radio(N_01.77.15P) and battery life is just amazing
ok now when i flash GB ROMs (any for that matter) battery life decreases like 60% drop in over all life.
can any one tell me which Radio is best for Gb ROMs in terms of battery life.
Tried Radios:
N_01.77.30s.
N_01.100.00R
No impact either
and i also tried different kernels (stock French kernel and 1.1 OC UV)
not much of difference.
can any one shed some light on the subject matter ?

Well from my personal experience, you're always going to get bettery battery life from non-overclockable kernels and stock radio's, simply because they aren't modified in any way. If I were you I would either download and flash the stock radio / kernel for your phone and use that or mess around with different combos till you finally find one that provides a good experience. HOWEVER, keep in mind that if you aren't erasing the previous kernel before you're trying this stuff it may bleed through and will not maybe show you the true potential of the kernel you're flashing. Use fastboot to "fastboot erase boot" to erase the previous kernel before you flash a new one.
edit;spelling

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Iphone > galaxy s 2.

GB+Radio+Kernel=Broken
Iphone suck

My .15 radio has worked great froyo and gb. My modded gb stock is fine. I just flashed a kerned and uv'ed and have seen improvement.
Iphone > galaxy s 2.

This question will become more of a factor when CM7 officially arrives.
When CM7 arrived on the SGS, a whole bunch of new modems popped out of nowhere...

[Q] New Fascinate

Just got a Fascinate and am trying to find a way to make the battery last longer. I did some searching and it seems like the only solution involves rooting. I don't know if i can do that to my phone with my limited computer skills. Are there some basic tips to making the battery last longer? Thanks
Use WI-FI whenever available.
Leave wifi and gps off when not in use, keep screen brightness as low as is tolerable, use dark wallpaper. Your display uses most of the battery. So are you stock 2.1? If so, you have WAY better battery life than froyo.

I'm running version 2.2. When I look at batt usage, 95% is display. One of the things that impressed me the most about this phone was the display. I have it on auto brightness but I'll try to dim it down.
You can try juice defender in the market, I've had decent luck with that in the past.

I can't agree with that statement... I'm sure it's user-specific, but
I ran stock for a few days before jumping into rooting my device
At the time, it was all DJ05 builds and THOSE had phenomenal battery life.
But stock sucks my nut cuz of all the bloatware that's running constantly.
I had been getting comparable battery life to 2.1 stock on the EC10 stock kernel, and so far seeing slightly better battery with JT's source built kernel (only been 2 days since I flashed)
And if u're on stock 2.1, i don't think it's necessary to leave wifi and gps off as the 2.1 builds didn't have the sleep problems if i remember correctly
I don't mean this to be a smart ass...
But if you don't want to customize the software the only thing you can change is the hardware. So, buy yourself an extended battery and you won't have to worry about charging.
the extended battery makes the fascinate look like its 9 months pregnant. Do some research on rooting and roms. There are plenty of How to's in the Dev form. Follow them step by step and you shouldn't have any problems. Once i started flashing i haven't been able to stop, its addicting....
I've had the phone for five days now and the batt lasts all day. I use battery doctor and also task killer. Love this phone, learn new things about it every day.
On another note, is there a way to boost reception?
personally I would root it first and do a backup of your your apps with titanium backup and then flash superclean 2.9.2 using the odin files at http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/59348-odin-froyo-leaked-packaged-custom-roms-w-root-clockwork-updated-3-25-a.html .Then after that flash an under volted ec10 kernel like JT's = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010102 or The PeanutButta Jelly Time = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012571 . nemesis2all's ec10 kernel = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011626 is good also, but with the ability to overclock you wont be able to resist going to 1200mhz and that wont help your battery life.

Since my carrier is Telus and not Verizon, will these programs still work or do I need ones specific to Telus?

most economical rom?

Hey guys I love all these custom ROM's but honestly the battery gets drained so fast it takes the fun out of it. I was wondering if there was any specific ROMs that were easier on the battery>?? The only feature I truly use on these things is the wifi tether, other than that I don't care if the phone is a litte slower etc, i just want to be able to make it a day on 1 battery..TIA
I can easily make it a full day with the PowerWashed 2.0b3. Yet I also have Juice Defender Ultimate installed.
Ill be quite honest, gingerbread is not what its cracked up to be imo... I have found that powerwashed 1.2 ed05 froyo w/ pbj 0808 kernal is one of the most stable roms out there. Im getting between 1.5-2% percent battery drain per hr. That means I go 2 days without charging the phone with normal use. Heavy use such as browsing the internet for a couple hrs and sending dozens of texts usually equates to charging the battery once a day or slightly better. The only issue is not all fascinates play nice with the -100 undervolt that the pbj kernal has built in. If thats the case, then just run the otb fusion kernal that come with pw 1.2...battery life is still good(2.5% per hr) and you can overclock with that kernal, but truthfully overclocking does not really improve much imo.
Wow thanks guys! Yea I am on MIUI and its horrible.. I will look into the ROMs you guys suggested..thanks!
vanilla gb is insane. running with the glitch 9/15 kernel, undervolted, smartass, noop and usas tweak applied, simply the fastest rom i've ever used battery is also holding up really well, but I have the naztech 2400 installed just yesterday, so battery should only get better with more charges. pwgb is also really good, but the file system is still samsung rfs, which is really slow. Pw froyo is probably the better choice for most people with pbjt kernel which has voodoo. Ill stick with vgb and see how battery does and if it doest yield me 6hrs of screen on time ill switch back to pw froyo and see how it does.

I went ahead and did the switch to ed05 pw 1.2... What kind of probs would I have if the pbj -100 didn't agree with my device?
I honestly do not know how to overlock/mess with uv settings. I am just looking for the most stable rom with the best battery life..battery life being the most important

Ok sweet! Yea, everything seems to be good, only issue I am having is in BLN it says the Biblight isnt working or something like that..Voodoo control is g2g, just the BLN. I'll have to look into it
I had the same problem with bln not working on this kernel. What worked for me was to flash the older 0531 kernel first, then flash the 0808 kernel. Bln works fine after that.

Actually pwgb beta 3 with adrenaline shot mod is yielding some crazy results for me. Screenshots to follow when battery decides its held on long enough.
Only my 2nd day on ED05 powerwashed w/ pbj0808, but man I must be doing something wrong. At BEST my battery is draining roughly 5% an hour and thats with practically little to no use. NO clue how you guys are getting such good battery life...
Seriously, just odin the pwgb and flash the adrenaline v7 and thank me later.

What kind of programs do you have open/on, on a daily basis? I found that twitter absolutely destroyed my battery. I actually turned notifications off unless its a DM or @ me, otherwise I just open Plume and refresh to read the timelines.
Its doing A LOT better since then. I haven't used the phone much, but its only at 75% and Its 140pm, been off the charger since 6am
I am gonna see how it is this weekend when I am actually using it more
@Droidstyle: I was thinkin of trying out for starters the rom you recommended "powerwash 1.2 ed05 froyo w/ pbj 0808 kernal" but when i did a search for powerwash 1.2 the thread mentioned that it was outdated and to try gingerbread...just a little confused since i'm still new at this: considering my samsungs fascinate uses this base band (this is the general info of my phone Model : SCH-I500
Firmware Version 2.2.2
Baseband Version: S:I500.04 V.ED05

i will have to use a rom that supports ED05? or am i okay to try out any of these roms? did a lot of reasearch today, just trying to narrow it down as to which rom will be the most apt for me (meaning which one will i get the best use out of) and what will i be able to do after that? do i apply themes from the themes section, or i can only do that if they correspond to that specific rom? to anyone in the room please enlighten me, i've spent almost all of today researching this and would greatly appreciate help from the experienced...

Im not sure why he did that... Its a very functional rom and is up to date as much as it needs to be. Read my guide, uses that rom for an example on how to install a froyo rom. You are not limited to what your base band shows, you can flash 2.3.4 gingerbread roms if u like,, but they still have a few minor bugs. Actually 2.2.2 pw 1.2 ed05 is the most functional rom up to date imo... everything lse still has minor bugs to work out.
@DroidStyle thanks man, your guide to flashing power wash is pretty direct, but i'm a little lost here...Isn't the Rom mgr. program you install for the market used for flashin the Roms so that you don't have to odin the rom to the fascinate? also, can I apply whatever themes? ...ie: are those used to customize ur GUI?

Stay away from rom manager!!!! It only works for the mtd based roms such as cm7, miui, aosp... even then odin is a much more reliable way to work with the fascinate. imo just get use to the fact that your going to have to use odin most of the time when flashing.

ICS Frustration

So I've been alternating between multiple ICS roms and Bamf gb and I just can't stay with Ics. I absolutely love all the ICS roms, but my battery life won't get me through a work day. Even with data off and only sending a few text messages it lasts about 6 hours. I first used the ics firmware and one of the older ics leaks and had horrible battery life. I just tried the newest leak with gb fw and still its horrible. Am I doing something wrong? Why is my battery half of what it was on gb?
In short why can't I have good battery life on ICS?

Why do so many people claim they get the same or equal battery life? With so much fairly polished in it I wish battery life was better.

My battery life is just fine on ICS and I have no heat problems either.... but its definitely been very hit or miss.
There are probably a few different hardware revisions out by now, and the various issues are probably affecting only certain phones and not others because of slight differences between them.
If you are one of those people who are having problems, best thing you can do is wait until HTC releases the final ICS build..
any idea why text messages would cause reboots on ICS ROM's?
it shouldn't period. never had that happen. sounds like a bad flash, dirty flash
nsd combination of radios/firmware or a mix. I'd backup, run the latest ruu,clear/reset through bootloader, flash newest amon recovery, wipe everything, flash rom/kernel and firmware patch depending on which you chose. if using new firmware use the 5/2 radios to reduce heat. hopefully you're s-off to do all that

[Q] Best Combo for Battery life?

Okay so I've been messing around with roms lately and I'm somewhat a flashaholic lol
But now I'm really looking for something flexible but GOOD on battery life.
What Combo is best for battery life?
such as Modem & Kernal (+ Rom)
I'm currently on this (at the moment):
Rom: MIUI V4 (360 PRODUCTIONS)
Kernel: 3.1.10-subZero-1.6 End_of_Line)) #167
Baseband Version: T959UVKA7
My battery life isn't really too special, I have wifi on, 3G preferred, auto brightness, sound on high. . .
85% - Discharging 2h 5m 30s on Battery
Any ideas on bettery battery life or is this pretty much good/normal?
also my battery isn't a samsung battery its an MYBAT 3.7V LI-ION Battery VLN-08 1200mAH . not too sure if that plays a big role in this.
sidenote: TWS IS ONLY 4%.

I'm going to make an assumption here, and perhaps it is an incorrect one.
I've installed countless ROM's on my Vibrant, and I've had mine a VERY long time (got mine the week before the official launch...long story).
I've found no roms that match the overall battery life of Samsung 2.2 froyo based roms. It is for this reason that, though I've tinkered with practically every single gingerbread, ics, and jb rom ever released, I always go back to my personal favorite as a daily driver. Project V w/Bali 1.8.8 kernel and KB5 baseband.
My assumption is that the "black box" effect is at play. Getting the last baseband available to us (KB5) to happily play with later builds of android has always been an exercise in frustration. Sure it has been made to "work" with later builds, but given the closed nature of it it's clear it just doesn't work as seamlessly well with anything else.
My battery life with 2.2 based roms has always been way better than later android builds, often lasting twice or more as long.
Thanks for the link I'll take a look at it.
@masterotaku : Everyone says Froyo has the worst battery life ever :\ but I also believe what works for my phone may not work for yours, and I do know Froyo is a very stable rom it was the rom i ended up going back to and sticking with on my MyTouch .

[Q] 2.3.4 vs 2.3.6

Hello,

Well next time please do post questiona in the general sub forum Anyway I think it is better to just update to 4.1.2 since you are rooted anyway. I get better battery life and signal on 4.1.2 compared to 2.3. My choice of a rooted stocked based rom would be NeatROM Lite by Sale :good:
I agree. Generally, upgrading rather than downgrading will increase performance so I would just go wit a higher version. Also, if you feel you have an unnatural battery drain, there are other options except switching versions to handle that. Maybe it is one of your apps that causes the battery drain. Other possibilites are sync cycles or kernel. If you switch to another kernel that might help your problems better than switching ROMs (although switching ROMs is always recommended, just for the fun of it )
gulypi which
I don't know if I am doing something wrong, but I just flashed NeatRom 5.0 and the battery life is terrible.
From my point of view, 2.3.4 stock with speedmod kernel was the best with my s2. I had battery life for 2 days. With latest roms I have battery life for max. 24h. I always did a clean install with factory reset. DonĀ“t know why the battery life is so bad with my phone.
But now I ll give it another try. I will format the whole phone and try sentinel rom again which i liked most
NeatRom 5.0 killed my battery also. Trying 4.9 for now as I jumped from 4.6. If it's buggy I will switch back to 4.6

Media scanner fix for battery problem on neat ROM should fix this. Also Apollo kernel is great mix with any stick Sammy ROM.
I don't know why flash modded kernels (at least if you are about to have better battery life, not other mods)? I have plain stock GB 2.3.6 XWKL1 (DDKL1) and just use Go Power Master, Set Cpu and calibrated battery.
At first when I went back from ICS to GB battery lasted for 14hrs. I charged battery fully on and battery "learned" new system and went up to 23hrs. Then I calibrated battery: fully discharge till phone went off, again started, playing till off again and again till it won't on. Then without turning it on I charged battery fully, unplugged charger, waited till battery went to 99% and plug in charger again till 100%, and again. I was using WiFi over half time of usage, flight mode at nights, play wit phone settings, installing apps, browse internet a little, use as phone as usual, listen a music a little, browse photos, etc, and battery lasted for 39hrs on stock battery which previous owner using for last two years and he didn't care about healthy battery usage. I got Samsung Extension Pack with 2000mAh Battery and flat back panel but it waits for new S2 I bought yesterday. I will put new battery after ROM flash and get all restored to state I have now, then I calibrate that bigger battery for new phone.
But anyway, question was if someone was playing with 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 stock ROM's in order to achieve better battery performance? I read somewhere that guy had over 4 days on stock battery and 2.3.4 GB. So I wonder if I switch to 2.3.4, which may be probably less demanding system than 2.3.6, will I get more time on one charging? I don't care about how it may or not look like cause I use GO Launcher anyways, but does it have same stuff and functionality as 2.3.6?
The problem with comparing your phones battery life is that it's depending on too many variables. You can't just say 'My phone lasted 30 hours with this and that usage', because everybody is using it differently. If you really want to test it, flash both versions yourself and try.

In addition to Donnie's very good point, you're asking about 2yr+ old firmware. Do you realise how few people on a site like this are actually running firmware that old ? You'd probably find a fair number of 'ordinary phone users' out there who are still running GB because they may not be technologically au fait enough to do an OTA update.
At the end of the day, changing firmware to squeeze every last drop of battery life becomes a game of diminishing returns in that you can spend a lot of time to get that last tenth of a % of use out of every charge. You have to ask yourself is it really worth it, or is it worth simply enjoying your phone & chucking it on charge every night (or if you really chew through battery, getting a spare).

Well, the thing is I don't understand why people update their phones and then complain about battery life if 2.3.6 works fine from what I observe here and there.?
As per Donnie's post, there's too many variables involved to say 'This Android version will definitely give you better battery life than that version'. Personally, I get better battery life out of JB roms than I ever did out of GB or ICS roms, not that I got poor battery life out of either of those though. And the reason for that is I worked at it.
There's no magic simple A-B-C to better battery life, regardless of what rom/kernel/Android version you're running, you have to experiment & try stuff out to find out what works with the way you use the phone/have it setup.
People who complain about battery life & attempt to pin it on the particular Android version they're running tend to have a really poor understanding of 'how it all works', because it isn't that simple as I've said.

People can also update their phones because of other reasons than battery life. ICS was the best for me with battery usage, but after JB downgrading isn't an option for me as I would miss to many new features and other additional functions.
The choice is yours to make. If you are satisfied now, I would stick to 2.3.6 if I where you. If you are curious about other versions -newer or older- try those
