perm disable of roaming data? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey, is there any magical hidden menus where i can permanently disable data roaming? i still want phone and text roaming, but not data... every time i go where i don't have coverage it automatically enables roaming and i got an unexpected roaming bill last month... checked and data roaming was enabled on the phone..
This is for a T-Mo T959 on wind mobile in canada... not the i9000m in my sig.

yes, but then every time i leave my network it enables it and prompts me telling me it has done so, and if someone else is using my phone (or the kids are playing with it) it gets turned on.

Thats odd. I travel outside of the normal network pretty often and I've never had that happen to me. "Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Networks > Data roaming <--- Disable it" is how I am setup and it always pops up with the option to enable but I never do and I get no service again(data only) until I get back into a normal service area. I'd assume its a bug in the ROM you are currently running. If no one else is experiencing the same problem running the same setup I'd suggest trying to re-download and re-flash.
Good luck!

Its the stock rom, and it does prompt as you said yours does, but if I am not paying attention or someone else is using it, it gets turned on and is not noticed til my next bill where I find surprise charges... I am looking for a way in the programming or whatever, to perm disable roaming, or at least supress the prompt.

i really wish people would actually read the threads before responding.

I don't use the app so I'm not sure but perhaps you can use tasker to automatically disable data when your roaming.

can you switcg data off on 2g networks

Hi Guys, I got fond of the Hero a lot. and requested a friend to get one for me on his way from london (sim free, unlocked)
1 thing concerns me is the data consumption over 2g networks as its quite expensive here
I need to know if I can stop data transfer without affecting calling ability???
this is crucial in my decision to buy
Appreciate your clear and quick responses.

Settings > Wireless Controls > uncheck "Mobile Network" > Qapl'a!
you can even put a Mobile Network Toggle on the desktop to just switch it on and off.
Whilst off, you can still send and receive SMS and calls, but not MMS.

does shutting mobile network shut data only?
the toggle is native
no you don't need to root the phone
yes, it only shuts off mobile data (including MMS), this is why it's called mobile data, and not airplane mode. Wifi is unaffected.
Data Roaming
Hi everyone,
We've just started using the Hero at work as a business phone, a lot of our employees travel internationally on a regular basis.
Using our old WinMo phones, picking up emails whilst roaming was automatically disabled by default but could be manually sync'd with our exchange server if required.
On the Hero, there doesn't seem to be a similar function. You have to go in to the Mobile Network settings and disable 'Data Roaming'.
My question is, if I disable 'Data Roaming' but still have 'Enable Always-on Mobile Data' active, will any downloaded apps still be able to connect and update i.e Twitter gadget for instance? Or does disabling 'Data Roaming' stop data connections full stop?
The ideal scenario for us would be something that is quick and easy to turn off (or turn on) that would prevent any data connection but will let us open up the Mail app and sync manually with our exchange server if required (like we could with WinMo).
I currently have the Toggle Selector app on my home screen to quickly get to the Mobile Network settings. I'm just not sure what to enable/disable in the settings menu that will let me get mails manually and prevents all other data connections.
Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome. It's got us scratching our heads a little and is stopping us from upgrading other staff phones as we don't want to end up with a phone we can't use as a business tool internationally as it costs us the earth in data roaming charges.
The easiest way i can think of would be to have the toggle on screen, and when you want to sync, you turn it on, manually refresh the emails and then turn it off again.
if you have data roaming blocked, it will override the 'always on mobile data' setting, so no, when roaming is turned off, nothing will connect when you are abroad.
honestly though, android is not ready for business really, which is why HTC are pitching it at the consumer market mainly.
I am in the same position, just want to be clear, with the "toggle" will it stop all data? (including browser, mms texts, apps updating) i only want these when i have wifi.
thanks in advance
to make it absolutely clear:
When at home,. turn mobile data off and NOTHING can access GPRS.
When roaming on another network when abroad, turn data roaming off and GPRS is blocked. To access GPRS, you have to turn data roaming AND mobile data on to access GPRS.
The Data roaming toggle has precedence over the Mobile data toggle.
Thank you, appreciate it
I have noticed toggling mobile networks occurs twice. What I mean is, after toggling a couple of times, I cannot seem to coonnect to 3g anymore? In that case I always have to restart my phone. Anyone experiencing this issue? It could be a bug. I used To have a blackberry bold and that bug was fixed by an update

[Q] Data Roaming popup

In Settings->Wireless Networks->Mobile Networks,
I have "Data Roaming" unchecked.
I'm in an area when my weak-signal 2G connection on T-mobile frequently drops out and restores. Every time it restores, a popup graciously informs me: "Attention! Data Roaming will incur extra charges. Disable Data Roaming?" I must click yes to dismiss the window.
I don't get what part of the setting (Data Roaming: UNCHECKED) the OS doesn't understand!
Am I missing something or is there a special way to really disable data roaming or get rid of the popups?
thanks!

I sometimes see the Edge symbol in the top row. I just figured out that a couple of other carriers are sometimes weakly picked up at my location. I have a pay-as-you-go tmo sim in the phone (unlocked). I thought data roaming was not a possibility anyhow (I'm a noob at this). I only want to use 2G for phone, and wireless for data.
What I'm really hoping for is to NOT be asked to disable data roaming, since I made that setting.

Well here is a better option. Go into Settings>> Wireless and Network >> Mobile Networks >> Access Point Names >> Click on Menu & select New APN and create Dummy one. Then before selecting the back button make sure there the radio button for the dummy APN is selected. This should prevent you from connecting to Tmobile Data Services.

Thanks. That seemed to have worked, in that I don't get the roaming popups anymore. It seems that it may prevent me from roaming on 2G as well, but I'm not sure - I'm trying to figure this out whilst in cellphone hinterlands (in the San Juan Islands where the locals hate cell towers). Now I'm getting a string of popups requesting that I automatically search for providers, even though I've set it to manually select tmo. What I'm hoping for is just tmo 2G for phonecalls and SMS, with no guff from the phone about it. My Razr does that just fine.
Tomorrow, I'll drive off to a more cell-friendly area and make a better determination.
Appreciate the help!

I am glad it worked. Just set your phone to select automatically and you should be ok. Since you changed your APN, it will not connect to internet anymore using 3G. I know this coz, I used this while in Toronto last month.

Wifi

Going on vacation in Mexico.. is there a way turn my data and phone off and just use wifi so tmobile doesn't charge me?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Uhh.. go to settings > wireless and network> then uncheck the things i think thats it.
but when you are traveling, put it on airplane mode? then when you get to wifi connect to wifi.
Go to wireless and network>mobile network and make sure data roaming is checked off. There's also a setting under message settings to disable mms retrieval while roaming. If you don't plan on using the phone to make calls just take the sim card out.

Data Roaming - Enable:

How can we make sure our EVO 3D's have Data Roaming enabled? I'm using the Elixir app and under the "sprint" section, for "data roaming" it reads that it's not enabled.............even though I have the appropiate boxes checked under Settings, Wireless Networks, Mobile Network Settings. So what boxes do we check and even though those are checked, are our phones really enabled for data roaming?
I believe sprint does not cover data roaming.
Unless I am missing something, Sprint does cover data roaming, depending on your plan.
I see data roaming usage on my bill.
I thought it was enabled under mobile networks settings. I turned off roaming guards.
Sprint does cover data roaming, I use it quite frequently. It sucks and is slow right now for some reason, but we can use it.
Mine was just as you said... Settings > Wireless & networks> Mobile Networks>
Turned off roaming guards for Domestic Voice & Data
Turned it to automatic under Roaming
Checked Domestic Voice and Data
And disabled Always-on mobile data (seems to connect better with this not selected, or at least Google Music connected better while roaming)
Are we supposed to check the boxes for International Voice and Data too?
No do not check international for anything, that can get real expensive real fast.
Unless you added some type of international service on your plan which most people do not.
Even with the appropiate boxes checked for data roaming, the Elixir app still shows that data roaming ins't enabled.
I haven't used elixir but it probably is just reading your phone wrong or is inaccurate. try going into a "black hole" of service somewhere in your area and see if you get the triangle above your service bars, or check your bill to see if you used any roaming data. I typically use around 200 megs of roaming data

[Q] MMS in roaming

Hello
I searched the forum about the topic, but no real answer. The problem is that, the MMS is disabled during being in roaming and having data switched off. Is there a way to make MMS messages working while the Internet data is switched off ?
Unfortunately, MMS requires a data connection.
I'm surprised, because on stock 2.1 ROM of desire it worked OK (internet data in roaming was blocked while mms messaging were working). Same thing I remember from WinMobile. Does anybody else is in peace with that mmsing is just not working in roaming ? No one did anything ?
okay. there is maybe solution for this, lookslike issue.
I did the same, that in Settings > Wireless & .. > Mobile networks > Data roaming - Unchecked to avoid data in roaming. So No Data, therefore no MMS. okay, no acceptable for me.
try this: in roaming(!) just un-check Settings > Wireless & .. > Mobile network (connect to internet) or in Statusbar menu in roll menu tap Quick settings and un-check Mobile network and then in Mobile networks menu (setting menu) check back Data roaming. So the MMS send and receive could be possible.
I understand this logic, as internet connection is something else than use MMS APN to communicate through mobile network data.
Cheers, Ondrej
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Will check it in couple of days
