[Q] Sound quality - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been wondering if there is any work published that relates to fixing the crappy sound quality and volume on this device.
Music is obviously very weak and gets distorted very easily even when volume not that high. I tried looking around but failed to find any related work. And i dont mean stuff like "download a EQ and put a dmiley face preset" because obviously im looking for a way to hear decent quality and volume in FLAT sound.
Thanks in advance.

The serious discussion around here is here:

Supercurio knows his stuff. If he can't do it, I don't know who can.
I fear the short answer is "no".
Every time I listen to my S9 and then return to my phone, I'm really having to persuade myself that the SGS2 is even worth it for "casual" listening.

My sound is great

Re: Help
Bumpity bump...
Pls guys... dont tell me none of you had this issue.....
help me out here ... i really need it .....
Hey,
I got mine sorted.
I bought something very similar to THIS
My one is slightly different. Only has one button on, which isn't going to get used anyway!
The above one would do the same I'd imagine.
Cost me £11 from Best Buys
Works an absolute treat. And sounds much better than my old iPhone.
Just need to run another cable from the adapter to the phone, and away you go!
Hmmm... that is a good solution for this....
But then again i think there was an HTC phone review where i saw this option pop out when u connect anything into the jack... lets see...
As for that .... ya that is a good option...
But lets hope someone comes along for another solution...
Ill have to check if something similar to that Jack is sold here in my country in India...
Thanks for the heads up man... appreciate it
wanted to post this as a seperate thread..also posted it as an answer to another nrelated thread where the question came up..
these are stereo headsets for music and calls...the ear bud options might work for you guys while driving:
I own 3 bluetooth headsets (yes i own every tecky geeky corny cool gadget I can find...usually I just test them out and sell them for a profit on ebay ).
I bought these Samsung SBH600 on woot during a one day sale for 55 bucks (shipping included) and you cant find them anywhere now (sorry...if you wait anywhere between a couple of months to a year woot may have them again..its one sale a day there). They are 30% passive noise canceling and really good quality. Can be used both for music and calls:
http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=14521
These also have a wire for a 3.5 mm jack so you can use for music only if you ran out of juice.
This is the amazon listing in case it ever become available again:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CX03PA/sr=8-2-fkmr1/qid=1286355036/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1286355036&sr=8-2-fkmr1&seller=
For comparable ones you can find the previous model but i cant vouch for those:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SBH500-Bluetooth-Wireless-Headset/dp/B0016I6GUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile&qid=1294670770&sr=8-1
You will have to check reviews and I do not think those have any noise cancelling properties. I think they also lack the 3.5 mm jack.
i also have the moto rockr headset:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LXR0BW/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001EKQQ5S&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0D7YT72QD8CD9NMWYTKH
This one is more of a startreky kind of look like a backwords visor. They have earbuds and it hangs behind your head. Good quality and has volume control and answering calls etc. Does not have 3.5 mm jack so bluetooth is your only option or noise cancelling.
Finally I have the very first version of these sony bluetooth headsets which also have a little led display on them. They can connect to more than one device so you could have them connected to your ipod and phone together for example (I think the samsung has that too but I havent tested it out).
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Ericsson-Bluetooth-Stereo-Headset/dp/B003DQ1DCM/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
Other options I do not own and cannot vouch for:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-S305-Bluetooth-Stereo-Headset/dp/B002BH3I9U/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1294671987&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DRBT101-BLK-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/B001QXDSMW/ref=sr_1_8?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1294671987&sr=1-8
hope this helps...its usually the stero headsets which will play music and then answer calls...the ear muff style is good for planes etc..the earbud style for driving and stuff...

Do all the Jellybean ROM's support USB audio?

I'm seriously tired of the garbage DAC in my phone, so if I put one of the Jellybean ROMs on it, would the FIIO E7 work on my phone?

Nope. I tried a lot of them recently: Gubment Cheese, Eclipse, King Kang, The Collective, latest releases as November 10th-12th/2012
None support USB audio out. I Plugged my USB sound card to it, and used an app to test it. Couldn't make it pass.
So I used the Note, OTG cable into usb cable from Tascam External USB Sound card. Pretty basic, no drivers, just for testing.
With the app I could hear the GNote's microphone pickup (ambient noise), which was interesting. The usb power was working, and I could hear it from my headphones. Some ROMS are more staticity than others. However, playing a music was a no go, no sound was passed to the Tascam. So Mic is okay, Digital Audio, no. Not yet. So I guess the hardware is capable, it's just that piece of code missing. I heard it was just added to CM10, in the GSIII thread.

BTW, with my low-efficiency headphones, I have to turn the volume up too much. You can hear A LOT of hiss with the Note's internal DAC. In my "low end" Shure in ears, it's clear only in between songs, but it's there. A small, portable DAC, like the E7, would work great for me.

Mini Jack don't work

Hi all! I have one problem with my sk17i. After using 7 months, my mini jack stop working. I test a lot headphones but all time music come from speaker. I think it is rom but i flash orginal, custom and this don't work.. What i must do to repair it ?
Sorry for my bad english.
If the music is coming from loudspeaker... Even after plugging in headphone...
It means that the jack can't detect the headphone...
It must a loose connection inside the device or you by mistake plugged out head phones by force... Seems a hardware problem.,. Better visit service center.

Audio jack no longer working
Hey hey! I replaced the screen on my sk17i and now, similarly to this guy, the audio jack doesn't work - the phone does not detect any headset I whack in there. Did I miss something or loose something when I took it all apart maybe? I'm wondering exactly how the audio jack connects to the phone, in case I failed to reconnect it or perhaps.
Thank you

I used toggleheadset widget to workaround this, seems as though it's a software rather than hardware issue, but I'm ok with that and I have the functionality that I want.
Hope this is helpful for the next guy

HERE IS THE MIC NOT WORKING FIX!
The headphone port has three connectors: one for left ear, one for right ear, one for mic.
If you have a headset with microphones plugged in, it reroutes all three to that output. In this mode, however, if you turn speaker phone on, it will reroute to your speaker-phone function.
Now, if something happens inside that port, something falls in for example, the phone would think that you have a mic plugged in. The top two connectors remain untouched, so it doesn't think you have headphones plugged in, and that's why it doesn't reroute the sound. However, the bottom connection is shorted, so it thinks you have a mic plugged in, thus turning off the phone's mic. Now people can't hear you.
This explains why it happens to PEOPLE, and is software/os/hardware independent. People have habits. I listen to a lot of music, and this problem has been happening off and on for a while now. I've found that if I clean out the headphone port, the problem goes away.
Sorry..
Above method did not help. No Jack issue.
I need to unlock this so It will recognize the sim. It is not registering the SIM. It says unknown sim. But i can make phone calls through speaker phone and headset

Headphone jack malfunctioning?

Whenever I plug in my earbuds or my headphones, the jack is normally able to turn around, obviously. But for me this results in the earbuds or headphones to stop working. The sound/music/video cuts out. I have to spin the jack around until the sound works again. I know if the sound works again once I hear a little pop.
I used to think it was just my earbuds failing, but it happens on my much newer headphones as well, so I don't think they're failing.
Any ideas what's wrong? Is my jack failing? Currently running Candy Six. Don't know if it does the same on CM/etc.
This does not make much sense to me. Is it in only certain orientations that it cuts out, ie. from 12 to 2? Confident it is not popping out of position as you turn? Maybe the socket is failing...

Yup, let's say I plug in earbuds with an L-shaped jack. I can plug it in and it works, but if I spin the jack to some certain angle the audio stops working. It even does this with my Audio Technica headphones with a straight jack.
Can you spin the headphones in another device to see if it's not a problem with them?

I've only been able to test on the computers and laptops at school so far and sometimes I hear popping or staticy noises. The audio still works though, it doesn't cut out.
So I guess the jack on my phone really is failing. I'll try on some other phones later.
I've been testing on other devices and everything's fine. But on my HAM, I've been receiving very odd failures lately.
Sometimes if I spin the jack or the audio cuts out on its own, my phone actually freezes for maybe ~15 seconds. System UI crashes as well (wallpaper turns black, status and navigation bar disappear, phone takes me to lock screen), but no error messages show.
This leads me to think maybe software issue? Why else would my phone freeze, and System UI crash? I really have to try flashing a different ROM and see if it still happens.
Might also be worth noting I (along with a few others) had audio issues with the original JellyBean ROM, even though they eventually went away.
My sister-in-law gave us a selfie stick, and you'd connect it in the headphone port. In camera mode pushing a button activated something, I'm assuming shorting connections in there to take a picture. I didn't attempt to see what would happen outside of camera mode though. (I wonder where the stick went. Not very organized I'm afraid.)

Flashed new ROM, same issue still present. I guess it really is a hardware problem then.

I haven't once used the headphone jack for headphone use, in the almost two years that I've owned the phone. I'm not really one with enough experience...

Hi JZchen,
I had/have a similar problem with my Mate2. I believe there is something structurally wrong with my headset jack. If I use any headphone with a microphone or a square credit card reader, it would not work. I had more problems with roms than stock, stock has a "smart" headphone option. I tend to use apple ear pods and they did not work with CM12.1 or CM13 and I had to go with headphones without a microphone.
I returned my mate to stock and it got rid of my microphone problem, but then I started having issues with the stock OS and some of my most important apps. I sent my Mate2 in for service and I don't think they actually did anything to "fix" it.
One thing to try is some compressed air gently sprayed into the headset jack to remove any debris that might prevent the headphones from being fully inserted.
Good Luck!

I had GPS issues, but dropping the phone was part of the equation so I wasn't sure what might be a cause until I read more and more on the Mate2 portion of this forum. It seems like some of the problems start with app updates. It will be interesting to see if future updates help resolve some of what I think of as just program bugs/incompatibilities. It really "seemed" like my phone was broken, and I was already looking around for a new one, when I decided to try to change settings to see exactly what was broken. (Personally I am on a budget these days, although my wife is doing a lot better that she is willing to help me replace it.)
As of now I am happy with the GPS performance in just Device Only, so maybe a setting change might help debug the problem for you guys. For example maybe trying to mute on a phone call to see what happens. In fact I just looked at the "Sound" settings on mine. I noticed a "Headset DTS mode" is greyed out, probably because I don't have a headset connected. I'd try toggling this to see if it makes a difference, as a start. I'd dig further to other seemingly related settings to see if I could find the problem....

Settings -> Smart assistance -> More -> Smart headset control is another setting I would toggle and see.... So I'd try both DTS and this off, DTS on this off, this on and DTS off, then both on.....

You could also set the Sound Balance or switch to Mono mode to narrow down if it is only the left or right connection on stereo headset that is the issue....
