+1 But since the Tab has only been out a few months, support won't even ask for a receipt. At least they didn't when I sent mine in.

as i got as gift i dont have receipt. but i like to check option as i mentioned.
I not think that Samsung have this feature by default. You will have to registre your device uself. BUT as the device is not 12 month yet I doubt that Samsung will ask for a receipt.

Don't most devices by default have a 1 year warranty from the place you usually buy it from? The warranty get's issued as per the date of sale usually mark's the start of it. Otherwise units unsold would be like, expired warranty

As far as I know, no.
You can call motorola and ask them. They will be able to tell you.

unlikely, you bought it off ebay so it's likely used, even so you've used it already since you've had it. Only way I can see if motorola can tell you since the IMEI would have been registered to another motoblur account before.

And how I can check it? Only call to Motorola?
I always though it was odd that this phone didn't have a total call timer. Every previous cell phone I ever had had that...
I chated with motorola support yesterday. They can't help too. The only thing that thay can provide me is MSN number ohh and warranty period. These things you can find in their site by yourself.
They advise to ask all detailed information in the store where you bought the item. It's impossible for me.
So the only one way is trust to your seller ))))

Well I've been in two minds weather to get the S2 or S3, I initially wanted a second hand S2 to get used to all the rooting and flashing ROMs and incase I brick it etc.
Anyway, to save a life story.
I have a chance to buy a new S3 for £300, 1 week old unused. The thing it she said it is an "unwanted upgrade" and that it came with no warranty.
She is on contract, I know if it got IMEI blocked I will phone police or whatever, but do you think it can get blocked from am unwanted upgrade?
and shouldn't contract phones still come with manufacturer warranty? is there anyway I can get it

That it will be imei blocked, if in doubt call the network and ask.
Unless they are lying and it is stolen, call the network is the safest way.

Could I really call up Vodafone and discuss somebody elses contract?
I've also seen unlock codes on eBay for £6 which I would rather do then rooting it and unlocking (although I plan on rooting anyway)
So I assume they generate the unlock code from the IMEI and other info? Tons of people offer unlock service for a fee when there is actually a free program on the internet that generates one

No you can't talk about someone else's contract, what you can do is give them the imei number and ask if it is blacklisted.
Although reading your last reply i think what you mean is sim locked, and in that case it is very likely that it is sim locked.
There are plenty of places to get sim unlock codes to allow you to use it on other networks, in fact, the person on the contract may even be able to get it sim unlocked by asking Vodafone for the code.
If you stay on firmware pre-XXBLG1 you can use voodoo sim unlock to unlock it for free but in subsequent updates Samsung stopped that method from working.

UNWANTED UPGRADE: A phone that you get from your carrier, usually for free, every 24 months of your contract, but you do not need it as you still enjoy your old phone.

I was thinking the unwanted upgrade would come with some kind of insurance, if she told her contractor she lost the unwanted upgrade I was thinking that it could got blocked by them (which I'm quite positive they can still do that, although I don't see how she would benefit)
I think asking her to ring up and get it unlocked is a little too much to ask, could I ring up after I've bought the phone?

Well I have proof of purchase but she said the unwanted upgrade did not come with any warranty sheet in the phone box. Don't you usually get a book with warranty information?

In Australian, Vodafone has a free unlock website. It works only on high end phones and they can be unlocked the minute you get them. Unlocked plenty of Samsungs and iPhones through it.
Maybe Google Vodafone unlock to see if they have the same thing where you are.

Just spoke to one of their reps, they are going to get me a unlock code. It takes 5-7 days though which gives me enough time to check the features of the phone are working good.

I am going to contact Samsung tomorrow, the previous owner hasn't even used the phone or even acknowledged the fact it comes with manufacturer warranty so hopefully I can still register it

I bought my SG3 via buy and sell forum. It was brand new in the box.
It seemed a little suspicious to me that the seller dropped the price by 200$ explaining his motive by saying that he wanted a quick sale.
I fell for his trap. Bought the phone. First few days it was working fine and i was able to make calls and messages, then one morning it showed a "No service" message on the home screen and since then i wasn't able to use it as a phone. I started looking for solution to my problem, then i was advised by a friend to check the imei of my phone to see if it was reported as stolen. When i checked, it turned out that this phone was reported as lost. And im guessing that the scumbag who sold me the phone , reported it as lost to his insurance company, who reacted to this by blocking my phone. I have no way of contacting this seller anymore to sort out this issue as i am in different country, but i was wondering if it is possible to do something about the "No service" issue. Is there any way i could make my phone function as a proper phone again and not just a multimedia device ?

I guess you will have to put this down to a learning curve, or you could simply sell it overseas, chances are you can sell it to someone in another country for the same price, imei's aren't blocked globally,
Or you could do the right thing and contact the police and have it returned, if the person has reported it stolen and you can prove by any means that you bought it then maybe they can prosecute him / her for selling it to you and then reporting it stolen, i believe that is fraud.
Going down that route will mean that you miss out on all angles, besides getting the satisfaction of knowing that that person will be getting a very suspect phone call from the plod.

what carrier do you have? check your IMEI...is it a generic IMEI starting with 00? if so...just repair your EFS and it should work fine
What country are you in?
I know changing the imei number is possible in certain cases but in the UK it is a criminal offence if I'm not mistaken.

Report a fraud. With some luck you can have it extended to Interpol and thus have an international search warrant against him (it's not as uncommon as it sounds)
Should the seller be got hold of, you might (or rather should) be able to get your money back.
Selling stolen goods is illegal, additionally noone would buy it if you told them it was stolen.
I don't no how but there is a way to fix this....

The issue is NOT that the efs folder is corrupt but that the device has been reported stolen.
So no there is no fix.
The phone was bought from Ireland. I am located in Norway right now . Phone's imei starts from 353 which is an irish mobile phone calling code.
I contacted few friends in Ireland to see if they can do something about it for me. They went to the police but police said the couldn't do anything about it without actual proof of sale.
Imei isn't blocked globally, you should be able to use the phone in Norway.

The problem is. When i insert a sim card , it works for about 24 hours fine but then the next day it gives me NO SERVICE , i tried with 3 sim cards and same thing happened but then again i was using sim cards of the same network.
Afaik it's just random chance that your IMEI starts with the prefix code for the country it was bought in.
Does it work again for a short time when removing hhe battery for a few minutes or changing the Sim to one you already tried? If no, then it simply takes some time for hhe carrier to actually recognize you're on the bad-people list.
Countries often work closely together to block stolen goods so you're more or less out of luck if that's true.

In EU all the countries are working together and the database is general. How you bought the phone ? On internet ? If so, don't you have any receipt ? If you bought directly from that idiot, why don't you made a hand made proof with scanned ID and signed, so you could had something.
If you have nothing, try to check the databases who reported it as lost or stolen. A shop could help you. Try to check who reported the phone as stolen or lost and who added the phone on the blacklist. This way you can find the idiot or, better, the insurance company and report the fraud. Keeping the phone can attract you problems. Don't forget, Google is keeping all the IMEI when you add a phone, they can track you, Samsung Dive can find you...and some day you can have the police at your door. In Spain, for example, stealing something over 500 euros is considered criminal act and your chance to share a room with others for the next 3 years increases a lot.

Trust me, if you act first is always better than being the last. In this case everybody, including the police and mobile providers will know your intentions and that somebody phished you. Being silent and searching for ways "to hide" the phone only will give you problems, unless you want to use the phone as an ipod. Trust me, an police and providers can help you. Phishing is a crime too, so that idiot can be caught before doing the same thing to others.

I picked up this phone about a month and a half ago laying in front of a pub and I reported it to the police station who took my details and the phone details. the owner of the phone was still not found and they have made me the legal owner of the phone now. but there is one problem the imei is blocked and the police said that I should get samsung to change it. I have asked but they want me to ship it away to them and pay for the change. but unfortunatly Im a little broke. So I was wondering if it was possible that any of you GURU's could help me with this. I have read through your forums and I have noticed that XDA does not really like sharing this information. Due to stolen phones. But in my case is there anyone who is out there who could help as the phone was not stolen and is legally mine. you can private message me or send a link with video instructions. Its the Galaxy S3 32GB running on ICS(Ice cream Sandwich).

Changing the imei yourself is completly illegal in most countries and you will not get any help with it here, all you can do is what the police have told you to do.
We don't share information about it because of the legal implications of doing it yourself, Samsung doing it would be legal because they have recognized you as the legal owner of the device.

Im not sure if that is completely true in south africa. I know it is in UK and other countries. Hence why I asked if it was possible someone contacts me via PVM(private mail) instead. As I really would like to start using this phone.

This is a legitimate forum though, you will very rarely if ever get any information that could be illegal either publicly or via PM, we don't know the laws in every country so it's better to be safe than sorry.

You can go to the police to give you a legal document that said the phone is yours by law; with this document you can go to a samsung official service to unblock the phone, paying this service of course, so you will never have problems using this phone.
Personally i don´t believe your story....

I would go to a service center because of what you need to get done, if you go to the Samsung website it will have a page for you to find a service center near you.
Remember to take any documents the police gave you to prove you are now the legal owner of the phone or they could refuse.

It would appear I've been silly and bought a blocked phone on Gumtree.
I bought it almost a year ago though and it's working on 3's network all this time, but none of the other networks work apparently. I didn't know this and sold it on eBay, the recipient couldn't get it working and I've had the phone back and given him a refund. He says he had a CheckMEND done and it says it's blocked on some networks.
I'm reading what CheckMEND say about recycling them and I get the impression if no-one claims it after 28 days it's deemed to be mine and I would then get the £££
I just wonder if anyone else has experience of this and any advice on what I should do?

It doesn't work because it doesn't accept others sim card or it's blacklisted (by IMEI number) because it is flag as stollen ?
If it's a Sim lock protection, no problem. If it's your IMEI number, the phone is dead and your can put it in a bin or use it as an expansive mp3/mp4 player.
