I have a security application that I wrote to run on our sales staff tablets. We have several hundred sales people in the field and they are going to use tablets instead of laptops (once we get it done). Here's the problem. The Application cannot be deleted so we root the device and move the application to system/app and the manifest auto starts the program. Now, the problem is we just discovered that you can force stop the application and it does not restart when rebooting the tablet. It only restarts if the user selects it from the apps, until then it stays off (very bad for us). Unfortunately, we cannot have the application turned off, we always need the application to run especially after rebooting. We don't care the force stop stops the program, but it has to restart on boot.
Currently I'm testing on an ASUS TF101 but the same behavior is seen on other tablets.
I have deteremined that I can adb shell and run am startservice -a android.intent.action.MAIN .... which gets it going again, but I don't seem to be able to get this into any startup scripts. The .rc scripts seem to be on the ROM and don't stay modified after you reboot.
So, does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this? I would like to root the device, install our app, unroot it. I would also like any updates not to undo it if the MFG pushes an update. I really don't want to make custom boot images either nor install another app. I could write another app that checks app_1 and restarts it etc etc, but then again all you have to do is force stop them all. I would just really like to remove (disable) the force stop button on our application which runs only on devices we own.
Thanks,
TimmyDean
Did you find any solution for this one?
Thanks

Does anyone know how to stop apps and services from starting up automatically when you boot the phone?
I like to install lots of Apps to try them out, but a lot of these apps start processes with the phone and run in the background. I don't know if they're necessarily using many resources but I don't see why puzzles, games and other apps need to be starting with the phone and running all the time.
I know there's a paid app in the market, but I don't have a credit card and anyway there MUST be an easy way to stop these things from starting with boot, either a file to edit or some commands.
A task-killer isn't what I'm looking for here as I don't think that's a good idea with android, I think it slows the OS and causes instability, and anyway they just come back on next boot. I've searched for this but can't find an answer.
Anyone have any ideas?
I wonder the same.
Nobody is able to give an answer ?
+1 on that. It is quite annoying.

No, there is no "easy" way of doing it because of the way that Android handles these things. Essentially, the applications register a receiver which acts on the android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED broadcast action, rather than being explicitly called by the OS.
The app in the Market, autostarts (see http://elsdoerfer.name/=android-autostarts) presumably either amends the apps permission so that it no longer has the rights to receive this message (no idea if this is actually possible), or it is autokilling the task as it starts.
Of course, without a credit card, you are SOL as there do not appear to be any free alternatives.

Dave
Nice
The android next step is to start all app found in the market and after boot to shut down manually witch is not installed.
Hey everyone, I'm working on my first Android app and ran into an issue that I haven't been able to solve after hours of searching...
When testing my app in the emulator, it launches perfectly fine the first time. However, if I exit the app using the Back button (which sends it to the Stop state I believe), if I try to reopen the app, it instantly force closes.
The error comes up on the setContentView(R.layout.main); part of the code inside the onCreate. LogCat has a number of errors like "Error inflating" and stuff.
I've only done WP7 development, so Android is all new to me, but according to all the code demos, I'm doing everything right... I can't figure out why it keeps crashing like this! After it force closes, I can launch it like normal again...
I've attached the archive file of my project so you guys could look at the code. There must be something going wrong with it trying to restore from the savedInstanceState, but all the samples I've looked at don't do anything differently! I don't understand what could be going wrong!
Thanks!
Ahh apparently I was asking too much of Android and was getting out of memory errors. Funny thing is it works fine on android 2.2 but if I try it on 4.0 it always crashes and NEVER opens.
Time to rewrite stuff...

Be aware that, on Android, the second launch is often different from the first.
When you 'exit' after your first launch your activities are all destroyed (if you really exited) but the process remains in memory along with some resources and other objects.
This means that your second launch is not a fresh start like the first. For example, if you didn't clean up your activities properly when they closed after your first launch, that could cause a problem upon second launch.
You can see all of this in DDMS. Note that your process is still around after you exit. You can hit stop on the process to kill it (though Android will re-launch it in some circumstances).
Hello,
I have bought a no-brand phone and I noticed, that every now and then some application (which is full of ads) appear in my phone without any notice. I can uninstall them but they will appear again (sometimes same, sometimes new). I have tried to factory reset the phone, but the issue still continue.
Is there any way to find out which app is installing unwanted apps? For example android logs, finding apps with installing permissions, sniffing packets to find out which app downloaded a app?
I have root permission on the phone.
Thank you in advance
First off, if anyone is to respond to this question, please do not lecture on dangers or the "why" of forcing closing apps, or how they can be more a detriment on the system, etc. This doesn't answer the question and just makes everyone else who may be seeking an answer more pissed off when someone starts to question you on why do you want that feature, etc. The same goes true on trying to change the subject, or otherwise just failing to answer the question. If you don't know, then don't reply.
I have a [currently] un-rootable tablet which is a Verizon Asus ZT581KL running Android 6.0.1. There is a system update available. There is no [easy] way to ignore or close this update notification. If one says no to available system update (Android 7), it will magically re-appear and is hell bent on at least downloading the update and then trying to force you to pick a time to install it. By not installing the update, one has to suffer the notification that is always there and one has to be mindful to not accidentally hit yes to install the update. Factory reset (annoying) fixes this for about 24 hours.
[do not reply on how to get rid of the notification or other tips which do not answer the question, if you do, I will find you and I will kill you. (unless it's another workaround solution, in which case I will give you a big shiny nickel along with my gratitude)]
On this tablet, the OTA download and installation is run via this system service called FOTAService, and it's a sly little bastard. If you force stop it, it will re-initialize--only if you hit it like 4-5x will it "seem" to stay closed--but it will resume the download once the service is restarted/phone rebooted presumably--I wouldn't be surprised if it tried to start again on it's own if left the device to sit and simmer for a few hours.
However, there is a grimmer of hope: If I goto settings->app manager-> . . .->system apps->FOTAService->Storage and hit clear data, the notification seems to go away. Unknown at this time is if will resume or restart the download on it's own or next reboot. This is a service you cannot disable without root.
There are apps out there that will presumably disable autostartup apps/service even they say without root. I've tried All in One Toolbox, and it did not seem to disable the service--probably because I do not have root.
Obviously I do not want to update android because I will more than likely have better chances on older version versus newer version to be able to root it, if/when it becomes available.
My question: Are there any [good] apps that will allow me to either persistently auto-kill apps/services (the equivalent of manually going to app manager and hitting force close over and over again) via NO ROOT. A program that just makes sure a certain program doesn't load, and if it does will keep killing it
as it spawns a process.
AND/OR
A program that will allow me to do the equivalent of clearing app data/cache either whenever app data is present and/or at predetermined times ..i.e. on an automatic/polling basis.
(mindfart...maybe automateit app can do that..I'll have to check)
If I can have it so something is running keeping FOTAService from spawning or automatically nuking it's app data, that should work and I won't have to worry about it updating behind my back. Any help appreciated.
I might have found a working solution to build on.

I could write a script and run it at intervals...I'll report back

awesome...so many replies..thank you. So, I was able clear app data via this command:
pm clear 'app name' or more specifically issuing the command: pm clear com.asus.dm and it nuked the update for a good 24 hours. I tried creating a .sh script file, but I ran into permission errors. Issuing the command from adb works.
There are a bunch of app/cache cleaners available on the play store, but they all seem to do the same thing: They offer auto cache clearing and some offer interval app cache cleaning, but the ones I saw all seem just clean ALL app cache.
Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to SELECTIVELY set just the app/apps that I want to have their app cache cleared?--and not just ALL apps? If I found that, I could just set it to automatically run whenever, and be done with it. An app cache cleaner that when run, will just do the apps I have selected to be cleared. Does anybody know?
My phone was serviced "reprogrammed" and when it came back I keep getting ads. I tried resetting the phone but it still keeps getting adware silently installed. Is there any way to fix this?
You are not alone. Bought this phone for my mom since she likes a bigger screen to do social media stuff. The malware popped in after the last ota. The official wirelessupdate app included on the phone silently installs random apks that pushes full screen ads and impersonates clicks even if the the phone is not being used. This is common with generic android phones coming from CHINA
I haven't figured out a way to root the phone as most rooting methods will fail(because of the sucky spreadtrum SOC which makes it difficult to root the phone).SADLY, rooting is the only way to disable/uninstall the wirelessupdate app.
However, here's a workaround I found that works.
1) restrict your network to limit background data usage (Found in settings).
2) **uninstall the malware app: finding the app may be difficult as It normally disguises itself as a system app with names like radio, settings, wifi or some application name that doesn't even make sense. It uses a lot of data and is always active. You'll know its the fake app if it poses as a system app but you have the option to uninstall it(System apps cannot be uninstalled without root/Su access).
Buttt....
The wireless update will probably install another malware app after uninstalling the current one.
3)disable notification of the app so it doesnt send fake notifications to you that opens ad based webpages as it also fakes notification, posing as a fake notif from FB, whatsapp
4) force stop it and stop the services from settings so it doesn't load or push apps while you use your phone
Restarting the phone will make the app run again
5) Remove the app's permission. By default its granted access to location, settings, storage and sometimes camera or mic. The wireless app doesnt detect this and wont turn those permission back on
6) lastly, you can contact firefly support AND PRAY TO THE GOOD LORD they know know what they're doing. Because I did and they were completely clueless on the troubleshooting or on the issue itself and even blamed the problem on the user. Ridiculously stupid.
I haven't really tried ADB yet because i don't have the time and the phone lacks resources online to restore it in case I brick it. Frankly, this phone is not worth investing time fixing especially with the quality of support it has from Firefly and the price it asked for.
