i just recently bought the photon and im loving it, and i keep trying to find a good convincing review on why i should root my phone but cant seem to find anything, so i thought i ask why should i root this phone and what are the benefits of rooting it??? and is there a way to restore it to stock just in case anything happens???? sorry for the noob questions, im just starting out in android so its all new to me, ive been with BB for 7 years. thanks in advance.
I rooted mine for wireless tether for free. You can always unroot the device. I am wanting to see if I can put touch sense 3.0 on it. You can also remove any apps that come preinstalled on the device. It's really a personal question, no right answer.

Rooting will let you use various apps that require root, like titanium back up, root explorer and wifi tether. If you would want to go back to stock you would just flash the latest update.sbf and you would be stock and unrooted.
Unlocking you're boot loader is a different story. doing that would allow you to flash the custom recovery and flash a rom and custom kernel. There are threads in the Dev section if you are interested in rooting and unlocking.

Titanium backup (restoring apps from my EVO 3D), ad free android, cache cleaner, deleting bloat, dsp manager, set cpu are all reasons to root.

Because we WANT TO! Its that simple bro. Cmon, why would you ask this? Root gives us admin rights to our phone, most of us have control issues, so this way we don't have control issues with our phone! Lol Get some!

I rooted in order to get the Swype beta on there, much better then the one it comes with, need root to fully delete the older one.
It really is a preference thang... I decided not to root mine, cause it works so well outta the box. I've rooted (and bricked & fixed) every other device i've owned, though. Just can't find a concrete reason to root this bia. Besides, most ROMS out there don't work 100% (there's always something being worked on). Just my 2c...

I downloaded the free version of ROM manager expecting a lot of new neat things. After exploring things such as the free roms, i eventually paid for the app. When i look to download roms from the premium selection there are non to be downloaded. i see the same free roms as before. Im not sure whats going on but i wanted to get the better "paid" roms like cyanogen otherwise i wasted money purchasing the app.

Well, you might have wasted your money for two reasons..
1. There is no official build for Cyanogen on the atrix (meaning it is not supported officially by someone on the Cyanogen team (website)) but we do have a pre-beta build that is supported by quit-a-few developers from XDA. The Atrix Developers Team
2. ROM manager is just "easier" (somewhat) to install ROMS but you can get all the same ROMS listed here on XDA for free just by navigating to the website on your phone, download, then boot into CWM and flash.
I don't believe in buying an app if I can do it myself unless, it offers some very useful tools.
I believe the only thing that the paid version gets you - is the ability to initiate backups from the app itself and to install/update the superuser.apk. There may be one or two other things im forgetting - as far as ROMS - there are no "paid" ROMS.... at least none I know of.... including CyanogenMod
then i must say i feel like i want to pursue a refund from my carrier. i didnt get anything from buying the app, so i must have gotten ripped off.

I found a P500 (I think) this morning lying on the side of the road. Probably fell out of someone's pocket. The battery and back were lying next to it. At first I didn't think much of it and just walked past. Then I realized I'd rather return it before someone else finds it and keeps it. I know losing your phone + contacts really sucks.
So I have a P500 right here and I wanna return it. To do that, I will need to get into the phone and call a few contacts. Unfortunately, the phone requires a PIN. This is probably not a phone issue and more of a SIM issue, but is there a hack to get into the phone without entering the PIN? Or perhaps just find the Google account that is linked to it so I can e-mail the person?
Edit: friend just pointed out that I could just put my sim in the phone. It works and I have the e-mail address. Thanks!
If I ever loose my phone I hope you find it!

He was probably blowing smoke up your ass. T-Mobile doesn't customize ROMs on a per-person basis. And there is now way to otherwise remove apps without root.
Hah what a lie

I work at a Walmart "front-of-store" Wireless, I've rooted a Captivate, Droid X, G2, Vibrant, Sensation, Inspire, Infuse, Atrix, and probably others that I've forgetting, It's worth mentioning that most people I work with don't know what I've done with those phones or how to do it. I'm guessing that's the case with these best buy people.

Did I miss how to do this somewhere? How?
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G
You didnt miss anything... the ONLY way to remove Tmo bloat is by using the HTCDEV.com bootloader unlock and unlocking your bootloader. Then you must permaroot your phone. Only then will you have adequate permissions to allow you to remove the bloatware from your phone. There is NO OTHER WAY AROUND IT currently.
Thanks, that's what I thought.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G
I, being a t-mobile employee must tell you that the manager at best buy is bluffing. Just like users above have posted, you must root the device first prior to even having permission to remove the bloatware.

ok i have had my phone since the first week it came out and its completly stock i was wondering why would i root it what do i get besides free tethering? i had a htc evo and when i rooted it nothing changed so i was wondering whats the purpose. just to say its rooted? anyway i was thinking i should go ahead and do it. lol whats the best up to date way to do it?
which hboot do you get?
http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2010/05/07/5-reasons-root-android/
idk it was a long time ago. but i think ima go ahead and root it. whats the newest way out right now?
To choose my own prl, to control my roaming, to remove ciq and other logging, overclock and undervolt.
The best reasons to root haven't happened yet. (CM7, CM9, ICS). However, it is worth rooting just for ad blocking and tethering.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I like the idea of taking total control of my device. Rooting allows me to utilize everything possible that my phone is capable of. For some reason when these devices are taken out of the box they are limited for one reason or another by htc or sprint. Rooting alleviates that by allowing you to download and flash custom roms and kernels made by incredible developers that do it all for free. Their hard work is appreciated by all in the xda community. They aren't just themeing these phones but they are tweaking them to improve performance, battery life, and overall usability. So I recommend rooting for sure and take advantage of all this xda forum has to offer and flash a custom rom. I recommend trying more than just one. And if you find one that fits your needs, you can always donate to the dev to show your appreciation.
So you can become obsessed with flashing ROMs every day & kernel combination left & right. Tweaking & improving & crashing it & bootloops & learning in the process.
+ all the cool kids are doing it.
Yea there are so many things you can do to personalize your phone. Right now i am overclocked and running a dual core script and the phone blazes. Rooting is a must, it is the joy of android. Unlike the iturd your phone will look different and how you want it instead of looking like everyone elses
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Rooting doesn't change anything in the device. It just gives you, the user, "root" access, which is what Linux calls administrative access.
Its about the possibilities you have with that access. Personally I root so that I can find a ROM that gives me better battery life than stock.

All the devices I have rooted (hero, Evo 4G, Evo Shift 4G, and soon to be 3D, once TeamEvil releases their S-Off solution), I have always overclocked the phone. It just makes the phone run that much smoother.
Also, once stable ICS roms come out, I have a feeling the 3D is going to be a beast, with the OS natively supporting multiple cores. Plus, with a little overclocking....will be the cherry on top

I see ICS videos on 3d and threads. I think ICS might be fun. Htc evo4g lost. Replacement from insurance was 3d.
Question for Sprintuser - team note? You have a Note on Sprint or Tmobile?? Hmm tmobile is gsm so you probably have it on tmobile gsm unlocked? So want one.
Root != good
I don't know why to root my EVO, maybe I'm wrong but my last Android phone I rooted and haven't noticed any improvement. Accept for some apps become avaliable. I see no reason to root EVO since it doesn't need to be overclocked.

What a drag. I am really hoping to see an FXZ soon. Honestly it is the lack of FXZ that has me seriously considering the GN.
Personally I require a back out plan...if none exists honestly I don't want the phone. Mostly because the other thing I require is root. I know I can root the Razr as I already have....but I am seriously timid due to lack of FXZ.
This is why over Christmas I bought a Nexus, pretty much screw it up as bad as you want and theres always a way back. That and its been out for 1/2 the time and has 1000% more development on it already. I gave my wife my RAZR, her first smart phone.
