Hi all just taken delivery of my brand new samsung galaxy s2 and am working on rooting it,
So far ive flashed the insecure kernel and when it comes to rooting the phone using superoneclick it comes up with the failed message which im not understanding why? Any help would be great thanks

SuperOneClick is indeed tricky on SGS2. Try using SOC version 1.5.5 or so and also downgrading .NET framework from version 4 to the 3. If even doing this SOC get stuck in "waiting for device", try unplugging and plugging again the phone. Try ten times, in the last it will work I did it in the past, and by my own experience I can say that SOC+insecure kernel eventually works, but you need a lot of patience and persistence.
That said, the best way to get root is flashing a CF-Root kernel. In addition to root, you get ClockWorkMod (CWM) which is a must-have tool. Just flash the CF-Root Kernel and everything is done without hassle. This is what I recommend and what I use. However, if you prefer to use an original kernel (honestly, I don't see any advantages in using an original kernel instead of the CF-Root) you can try the first alternative.

Have a look at the xda bookmarks in my sig and get a recent stock firmware that also has a corresponding root firmware. Follow the instructions to flash them both and you should be fine.
It's actually very straightforward if you read and follow the instructions - it just seems daunting at first. Good luck mate.

It is simple, just completely uninstall the .NET framework 4 and install the .NET framework 3. (google for it and get it straight from Micro$oft website).
Regarding the CF-Root, chose the one that matches with your firmware (eg. my build number, baseband and kernel versions are all KH3, therefore CF-Root KH3) Go for your build number suffix and you should be fine. There is no much difference between the kernels anyway (according to Chainfire's post where the kernels are available for download). Anyway, after rooting, which kernel were you planning to flash? Get the CF-Root counterpart of the same number.
Read Chainfire's first post on his thread, it is plenty of information of the kind.

I am new to the android .and bought my first galaxy s2. I will follow the s2 one click root to root my phone. I need to know if I need the same kernal as my device? My original kernal is JPKG5. do I need jpkg5 insecure kernal and then a jpkg5 secure kernal to root my phone? Or can I change my kernal to some other kernal of my choice?
my galaxy s2 gets pretty hot if I play intense games like asphalt or star legends, it even gets hot if I use mobile internet like EDGE (i guess its 2g internet nott sure) and browse the internet. The battery life sucks. I keep wifi, gps off and it last like 7 hours if I use mobile internet. Heard a different kernal might help.
One last question, what is the purpose of titanium backup? Do I get to restore my phones original self back again easily? Like will it unroot itself and return to the original gingerbread rom if I decide to change to cynogenmod? If titanium backup does not do that, then how can I unroot my phone and then get back to my original gingerbread rom?

Welcome to Android I am not sure about the kernel. The purpose of TB is that you can backup all your apps and data and if you flash a new custom rom you can use TB to restore all the apps and data. Its a very powerful application. You can always flash the original stock rom downloaded from Intratechs thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278. Then you will have an unrooted phone. Beware of the custom counter!!

CF-Root is 1 step only, this means for a non experienced user like you (as it's your first android device) less chance to screw up something.

im a bit confused, all those stock kernals in that link u gave are kernels and rom? Like if I have cynogenmod rom installed in my fone and then flash my phone again using one of those stock kernels/roms, I would be flashing back from cynogenmod to gingerbread 2.3.3 (JPKG5)?
Also what is the custom counter?

Cf-root seems like it will limit me to only one kernel, is it a fact? Is it possible for a gs2 user to use any kernel he desires? because I would like to use a better kernel than jpkg5 but stick to the original gingerbread rom 2.3.3. Then mod it to stop loading the so called bloat somehow using an app. Plus I found cf-root to be a little confusing, can u help me understand this? Cf-root will use the kernel inside the phone and leave it intact plus give me root? Or will cf-root change my kernel permanently?

If you flash one of those ROMs you will flash from cyanogen to your original. The custom counter counts how many times you flash a custom rom / kernel - it can be a problem if you have to send your phone in for repair. Read more about it.

cf-root is an original kernel with root+cwm inserted. No it dosnt lock you to a single kernel, its just the most easy way to root your phone while keeping your stock rom. When you are rooted you then can flash any kernel or custom rom you want.
You only need to pickup the same (ex: kh3, ki4, kf1 etc..) for the root process, this to have full compatibility during root with the stock rom on your phone, but after successfull root you can flash any kernel/rom for the s2

my stock kernel is JPKG5, and i didnt find any JPKG5 in that link you gave earlier. there is one that says "JP_XSG_KG5" should i be using this to root my phone?

find a kernel that is in your region and then follow the procedure that is on Chainfire's thread....it has all the regions in his first post in his thread and explains everything you need to know buddy......

cf-root kernel first mate...
First of all, you have to flash a cf-root kernel with odin using a .tar file. Then you can flash the kernel you want, if it is compatible with your rom. Usually, this is said in kernel thread.. Hope this helps!!

You should read Chainfire's CF-Root thread and use CF-Root kernel for XWKJ2 in 7. post => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root

Flash using the cf-root that matches your stock/current kernel, make a cwm backup, then you can change to whatever Rom you fancy. Me personally i just rooted and removed all the Orange crap and tried a couple of Roms but in the end the phone is that good im happy with rooted stock so restored my backup

I give up -- I thought I know enough to safely root my phone but it's hard =D. New things keeps coming up..
I just wanted someone to pin point me that this is the cf-root you should be using for your phone details as it is the best for you and with that you can easily install other custom ROMs (I want sensation one) and gain root access ofcourse.
Nevermind, I will keep doing the homework until I crack it up!
ANY help is still appreciated because I have files ready..

Hi i read up on rooting my S2 on this website and youtube and i was confident that i could do it, they all made it sound and look easy.
I went ahead and flashed my Kernel (XWKF3) using ODIN 1.85 and it went through process said successful and rebooted as said but soon as the first black screen comes on saying "SAMSUNG GALAXY S2 GTI9100" it just stays on this screen and nothing else happens.
It is therefore Semi-Bricked, i have tried several kernels and firmware and then it totally bricks, thou lucky i bought a usb jig that puts it back into download mode.
My advice is to be 100% sure and do a lot of research before proceeding and if anyone got an idea what i can do to get my phone working again please let me know
If you chose to use Hellcat's Kernel, then you don't need CF-ROOT Kernel.

Just download the Kernel that matches your current Kernel version.
To find out what Kernel you are using, Settings -> About
Else you can just go to Dialer, then *#1234#
The PDA version is also your Kernel Version.
Run ODIN, select the hellcat kernel *.tar file under PDA, then start.
DO NOT REPARTITION

You say PDA version is your kernal version, it means KJ2 is my kernal version. I can't find the match for this kernal on hellcat's page. Though my Baseband version in 'about' shows XXKI4. Since it's matches the kernal on Hellcat's page, I thought this is the kernal version.
So now I have to find a kernal version for my PDA version? And what is the difference between cf-root and the hellcat's kernals?

my advice to you, being a 2 months old newbie myself, is to read for a few days around XDA. you can learn alot and make sure you don't mess things up.
and get yourself a JIG off ebay ASAP. It's like 2 bucks, and it's worth it.
I myself, flashed CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4 on my SII and than plugged JIG to get rid off the yellow triangle. It was easy. For now I'm running like that on stock to get familiar in android cos this new to me (former iPhone user). After a "test/learning" mode I'll probably flash Galnet MIUI.
my version of device is:
android version 2.3.3
baseband version I9100xxkg5
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100jpkh1-cl453266 [email protected]dell140 #2
build number gingerbread.jpkh1
and that's why I flashed the "KH1" version cos I'm still unsure the other "close/similar" versions I can flash on my device.
If there is an exact version of CF-Root for your version flash that one and follow CFs instructions on the first page of his thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399).

I have only ever used CF-Root for rooting so I can't comment on Hellcat etc but what I can say is that all the information required for CF-Root is in Chainfire's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
It specifically states how to find out which file to use at the bottom of the very 1st post.
I was totally new to all this rooting and flashing firmware business until I found the XDA forum and I can only speak from personal experience but I have found that as long as you read, read then read again and follow the instuctions to the absolute letter you shouldn't have any difficulties.

Ive rooted my phone via odin. Flashed cf root kernel kf1 to remove the yellow triangle. But as i was about to flash the rom using cwm recovery mode, its opening up to a "manual mode", hence i cant flash the roms. Any ideas what might cause this?

I am confused in choosing the kernal for my phone. You see my baseband version shows XXKI4 which matches a kernal back there, it confuses me alot. But my kernal version shows JPKJ2, for which I can't find a kernal. Whole lot of confusion in choosing a matching kernal.. =(
Will GT-I9100_XWKJ2_insecure work for my kernel version JPKJ2?

Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.
Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ? You can ask me to make one, but I can tell you right now, I very very rarely make CF-Root's for kernels on request, unless it is the very latest kernel that has been released by Samsung. In the latter case, be sure to let me know. If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match. You should treat "KG1" as a number, but instead of 1-9, we have 1-9, A-Z (where A would be 10, and Z would be 35). "KG2" is really close to "KG1", "KF1" is not close to "KG1" at all. I hope that makes sense.

I also don't want any Custom ROMs just Root.
I was thinking about doing my rooting with CF-Root
And my questions are:
1. Do I need to have USB Debugging enabled or not?
2. Do I need to have ADB installed in my computer or somewhere?
3. Do I have to do any wipes or something else before rooting?
4. Which file is best for me?
5. When I root, do I have to do something (like wipes) after?
...I may add questions later when I have them more.

I would NOT recommend trying with that program as its for a totally different phone, Sony. Use tried and tested methods used by tens of thousands of users, such as Chainfire, our other used for SGS2 only.

I would NOT recommend trying with that program as its for a totally different phone, Sony. Use tried and tested methods used by tens of thousands of users, such as Chainfire, our other used for SGS2 only.

No worries, just my advice is to use tried and tested way with thread support specific for the SGS2. ;-)
CF-Root kernel will also auto install CWM Recovery (custom recovery) allowing you to make image (nan Droid-backup) of your custom or stock firmware and also able to flash directly from Recovery via .zip placed on sdcard. Just use vol up + home + power. You can also use the CWM app to boot directly into download or recovery modes, or backup & flash directly via the app
Heaps of pluses.....
Edit: I'm not here to convince you,..... always your choice. Just advise to read all instructions and faq and follow exactly.

If I root with with oinkylicious's suggested program then I'm not able to install CWM nor other kernels like battery mods or overclocking mods?

Brilliant misinformation there. The zergRush method is recommended by Chainfire here (notice that's not a Sony, and is recommended because other methods increase the custom binary counter on that device without the possibility to reset with a jig) and by Intratech in the Quick Root Guide.

With Samsung, the Kernel and Recovery are built a one. So if you flash a custom kernel, more than likely you'll get a custom recovery too. Without this you cannot use Recovery to nan-backup or flash directly from sdcard etc. You can always flash or Odin to flash certain firmware. Most Devs make their work as a flashable .zip file designed for CWM. Edit: including ROMs, kernels, themes etc.
I cannot comment on the other method or its effectiveness or risks. It may work, buy I've explained my reasoning and opinion in the previous posts.
It's all up too you to make the decision and way up any risks involved. Hope this has helped. Cheers.

Does the USB JIG work for XWKI4 bootloader? Didn't this version have the new bootloader?

i was really hoping someone could answer some very basic questions for me as i am new.
1) does rooting involve flashing a 'rooted' firmware to ur phone using software like odin? or does it root the existing firmware.
2)Do i really need to change the kernal? what is the benefit?
PS can someone please just explain to me how to root this phone??
i've read around and it is just confusing me..

That could be the same question...
Easiest way to root the phone is to flash an unstable kernel then root the phone, you could also just flash the rooted kernel to your phone...
If you do I would suggest getting a usb jig (from ebay, about $5) as you can reset the flash counter and get rid if the annoying triangle with "!" in it from your boot screen...
You also need to go the Aus I9100T thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166701
This will give you some advice about the Oz model....
You will probably need to get a copy of your stock modem so you have good signal strength...
Now, you have some reading to do....

Different kernels offer different optimisations for example custom boot animations, improved battery life and different versions of cwm and much more. To be honest your best off trying a few, you'll soon get a feel for what is right for you. tl, dr: brand new SG S2. Want to get CF-Root v5 CWM5, CM9, Siyah kernel 3.
I've been reading a lot of threads here lately, but I'm still confused about some things.
I'm new to android, but not so new to most concepts mentioned as I'm a linux user.
So I have a brand new SG S2 and want to root it and install CM9 (ICS) in it.
But before that, ideally I'd like to backup my phone (rom + efs). But to do that I have to flash CF-root, which itself modifies the stock kernel. So I'll lose my stock kernel.
1) Any work around to this? In linux?
My understanding is that this will get me the yellow triangle. And on CF thread he explains how to get rid of it. But the problem is that I checked the stock kernel thread here and I don't see my firmware there.
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)

My firmware is PDA: I9100BUKG2 and PHONE: I9100BUKG1.
Do I only need to care about the KG1/KG2 reference? And which one is more important the PDA or PHONE?
So for example would XWKG1 do the trick?
There is also the issue of CF-Root upgrade. For my phone only CF-Root v4.1-CWM4 is available (I have PDA *KG2 and PHONE *KG1).
2) So after I flash CF-Root v4.1-CWM4, get root, backup my phone with CWM and k-tool, can I upgrade to CF-Root v5? Or am I stuck to v4?

Other kernels
Replacing CF-Root with other kernels and vice-versa sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't have a list.
When going from CF-Root to another kernel, root will usually stay, while CWM will be lost (unless the other kernel also includes it), but there should not be issues. The CWM Manager app may remain, but probably won't do anything useful.

1.) There are a few BUKG2 on samfirmware.com. Not sure which one your provider is though. Once you upgrade to ICS (CM9(, you can use the triangle away in the original development thread to remove the yellow triangle and reset counter (works only for ICS) so that is one option for you.
Regarding the kernel, go under settings, about phone and see what it says under kernel (KG1 or KG2).
2) Once you root and get CWM, you can just flash a different kernel with the updated CWM to get v5. You could also just install the siyah kernel from V4 as it comes with its own version of CWM.
3) You will be fine with flashing most kernels from CF-kernel. Most kernel for the i9100 in xda includes CWM or sometimes its own version of CWM.
I used zergrush exploit to root my gf her i9100 with 2.3.5. Used root explorer to grab efs directory.
Then i had root so i could use mobile odin. Now phone is on litening 4.0.3 ics rom probably still with gb bootloader.
No triangle yet
Gonna flash ics bootloader through odin and move to cm9 nightlies tomorrow.

What exactly does this mean?
Do I need to install the SDK? Or do I only need the adb executable file? Or is there any SG S2 specific file that I need to download?
